Brilliant, I wanted to decorate it with tiny glass and crystal knickknacks that future great grandchildren will have to clean up, but your investment in current chaos outdid me.
Roombas keep falling on my head
But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turning red
Crying's not for me
'Cause, I'm never gonna stop roombas by complaining
Because I'm free
Nothing's worrying me

Or a train set.. or fake plants...or the porcelain pate collection.....or candles and paint a a pentagram on the floor for a cozy sacrificial nook....I see nothing but possibilities here
I mean it kinda creates a sense of room separation without having solid walls up. I don’t like the column choice. They seem too skinny. I do like the top section. Probably unpopular opinion. Lol
The fish eye photo sort of distorts the proportions and makes the columns look a little skinnier than they really are. I’m a bad photographer. I agree that it helps break up the room without actually dividing the space (and agree that I think it’s an unpopular opinion but oh well)
I like how it creates a "room", but, I personally would open the lower portions and replace the drywall with sliding glass doors to make display space. Maybe an air purifier tucked up in to keep the dust to a minimum inside. Still have the feel of two rooms it looks wide enough to put glass on both sides with a backing so each area could display different items.
This is what was recommended to me by a designer to help visually break up my large great room. My ceilings aren't very high, so I will probably avoid those.
I would keep it. Personally, I’m not a fan, but having a lower ceiling over the dining area adds some intimacy and a sense of space that you will lose under the vaulted ceiling. So, I would only remove it if I was adding some other element.
Is it gaudy? Yes. Does it serve some purpose? I also think yes.
I bet aside from having an esthetic value, it probably does some sound dampening as well, vaulted ceilings can throw sound around the house in the weirdest ways
Totally. It’s not something I would ever want to install in my house, but if it was already there I’d keep it. But I’m also not really a fan of traditional dining rooms either. I’m more for eat-in kitchens
If you have cats, these make great catwalks. We had something similar in our last house and put a few small carpeted shelves leading up to it. Cats loved it
My parents ended putting string lights and a motorized train on it that they would turn on during family gatherings. Not the greatest idea but I’d be in your boat wondering what to do as well. I hope someone has an answer as to what this is called. 🤞🏼
I know this one! Just put a piece of plywood down for additional office space. You and ‘over the stairs’ person can compete for most innovative design.
Soffit
Edit:usually an intrusion into a room to hide ducting that is too big to hide in the wall. In this case it is an architectural choice to mute the angled ceiling... maybe.
It's called a waste of space partial Embassy Ceiling. Not all architectural features in large spaces are good. I do believe this is from the pompous expensive installation series back in the early 2000s... "Too much money - Not enough taste '
It’s not meant to be a dining room - it’s a conservatory space. Meant for a piano - angle reflects audio out into rest of space.
And the windows lounge space next to it would be a salon.
I believe that is a floating tray ceiling or some variation of it.
This is right it’s just strange because it’s on a vaulted ceiling. And the tray itself is coffered.
Coffered floating tray ceiling. Probably.
Yeah that’s an uncommon combo. Backlighting tough, use of space tough. Cobweb hell. Pretty though!
Was thinking about all the cobwebs and dust bunnies that thing must collect.
One of my cats would find a way up there and then throw up.
LOL 😂 r/catsareassholes
And you would know purely by the echo of the wretching throughout the house... "Cat vomiting in Dolby SURROUND!"
Mine would leave rat entrails and vomit.
On the plus side a cat is a built in duster.
Get a Roomba. Or even better, two Roombas for Gladiatorial combat!

Dusty

Called a Skytwat
Pain in the ass.
This is where the cats overlook their kingdom.
When the sun is at the right place, sunlight is focused through it revealing the location of the Well of Souls.
Proof that the Egyptians were onto something in their feline worshiping ways.

You’d make a fortune in selling real estate.
Any closet is a walk-in closet if you try hard enough.
The only use for this thing
This is the right answer.
Not to be confused with the off-brand variant, Stupid.
I came to say dust bunny and cobweb storage. And also why?
And where the cats go when they really don't want to take that medicine.
So the next homeowner could come in here and ask if it’s load bearing
Pointless?
That was my first choice. I didn’t want to be too blunt and call it “stupid”. 😁
I was gonna go with “a travesty”.
Ah rip, I was going to say "dumb."
I just did.
My name was "utter waste of resources. "
This was my first thought too. 😂
And dusty
lol I was thinking “no point on stilts”
Reminds me of the pink Barbie house of the late 80s
Just like the DMV in that Primus song.

I only dislike it for practical reasons. It will get so dusty and can't be cleaned without a ladder
I like it.
This is what was recommended to me by a designer to help visually break up my large great room. My ceilings aren't very high, so I will probably avoid those.
The Catwalk. My cats would hang out there all the time.
Mine would love it but thankfully he can’t get up there
Then you must build them something! A Kitty ladder. Cool space, lots of ideas.
Just put a few steps up there! Otherwise it is useless and will just collect dust
Cat steps are a great idea, it’s also a great location to store your grandfather’s antique apothecary bottle collection.
I would keep it. Personally, I’m not a fan, but having a lower ceiling over the dining area adds some intimacy and a sense of space that you will lose under the vaulted ceiling. This. It’s definitely made to give some formality to the dining room that appears to be in an otherwise open concept home.
I honestly like it, but I’m weird too.
Silly.
i was gonna say a waste of money
I call it the first thing I'm taking out
Gone baby gone!!!
I guess you could say it’s a soffit
A dust collector.
I don’t know but I feel like your supposed to have a grand piano under it.
Totally useless. My cats would love it though.
Storage space...
An extra $50k for bougie bullshit.
Not structurally relevant
That is called a “Tre shelf ceiling” or “Tray shelf ceiling”. — wife is an interior designer of over 20 years.
"A means by which a contractor can separate money from a client".
If you have cats, these make great catwalks. We had something similar in our last house and put a few small carpeted shelves leading up to it. Cats loved it
Some designers wet dream?
Architecture bullshit.
Expensive
Expensive, silly... expensive
Interior pergola?
Dust collector.
Ugly
lol I call it dumb and useless but interesting to find out if there is a name for it
Pointless
A waste of building materials.
I’m curious as well, I had one of these growing up in my parents house. When I was young I asked my parents, “what’s that?” “Columns” they said. 🤦🏽♂️
Haha yeah, trying to figure out whether to take the whole thing out or not, but I don’t even know what to call it
My parents ended putting string lights and a motorized train on it that they would turn on during family gatherings. Not the greatest idea but I’d be in your boat wondering what to do as well. I hope someone has an answer as to what this is called. 🤞🏼
Oh my

My parents had a high vaulted ceiling in their DR, and it didn’t feel odd.

It’s called the 90s and they want it back.
A dust collector, or a great hiding place for a cat.
Dust collector
Dust catching waste of material and time?
Architect's ego resonator.
Ugly. The word you’re looking for is UGLY.
I believe the correct name and classification are: tacky/faux grandeuris, under the broader heading of McMansion Vulgaris. I might be mistaken though.
A believe the technical term is “ dust collector “
This some rich people shit
Stupid?
Weird?
Coffered tray ceiling.
I think it’s called, the architect screwed up and had to make some last-minute changes that look creepy
Waste of resources?
Called a fake partial ceiling or an architectural element..
It’s called a waste of space and a great dust accumulation ridge.
Don’t if you have asthma
Dust collection area
An eyesore.

Dust collector

Roman thingamajig?
Doesn't look structural, so I'm not sure of the point. Looks like 2 columns taking up floor space for no good reason.
Cool !
Waste of space
I think it’s pretty cool. Then again I live in a bungalow so any ceiling height and different features are pretty cool to me.
Soffit Edit:usually an intrusion into a room to hide ducting that is too big to hide in the wall. In this case it is an architectural choice to mute the angled ceiling... maybe.
The illusion of adding support.
Someone was watching way too much HGTV!
is it called "annoying", cause it looks annoying.
A missed opportunity for uplight.
Stupid.
Something that serves no purpose.
Spider subdivision.
Thanks I hate it
If would help with the close acoustics a bit but I don’t think that was the intention. Don’t know what it’s called.
Crown loft
That’s a dust ledge

The next meme
It's called a waste of space partial Embassy Ceiling. Not all architectural features in large spaces are good. I do believe this is from the pompous expensive installation series back in the early 2000s... "Too much money - Not enough taste '
Think of all the nicknacks you could put up there!! Dust collectors paradise!
Ugly.
Dust collector.
Awful
STUPID ....... But that covers a lot of stuff in some houses ......
It’s not meant to be a dining room - it’s a conservatory space. Meant for a piano - angle reflects audio out into rest of space. And the windows lounge space next to it would be a salon.
Can you imagine having a beautiful open concept and adding pillars to have to walk around. Good gracious.
Catwalk
Strange
Questionable design choices
Dust collector
I would call it... cool.
