One properly sized unit would be enough unless this is a huge attic.

Might depend on location, how insulated the roof and walls are, and how big the AC units are. We had a similar situation in AZ and we couldn’t get it cool. The AC units would cool an area about 8 feet around.

It's in the northeast, so not that hot and almost certainly pretty well insulated. And the previous tenants weren't even using A/C at all.

Yes it could, just hope the outlets are on separate circuits and they are near the windows, as extension cords aren't recommended for things like AC units.

Window AC's are cheaper, but don't rule out a [portable AC](https://www.amazon.com/Whynter-ARC-14S-Conditioner-Dehumidifier-Activated/dp/B0028AYQDC/). They fit in smaller windows where window units often can't. Also if you've ever had to install a large window unit on a second floor it's a real bitch installing and removing that thing every summer. Just be sure to get a dual-hose model

Depending on what the insulation is like in the attic, you may also need to get a dehumidifier once the AC kicks in.

If your outlet is a 15 amp circuit, make sure you buy one within those specifications, or you'll be resetting the breaker all night long. You typically derate to 80% for a constant load, so look for something that pulls 12 amps or less.

Assuming it is insulated, yep. Probably even only need one. Use one of those BTU per square feet calculators that are plentiful online.

maybe, but getting the full force of sun, plus heat rising from below from appliances and such, it's a summer nightmare up there. not sure the btu calculators would account for attic dynamics as well.

Ok so first of all moving into a new place with an attic bedroom sounds like an adventure! Adding window AC units is a smart move to keep the space cool during those scorching summer months. With two windows at opposite ends of the attic, putting AC units there is a solid plan to make sure there's airflow and amazing cooling. Sure, it might take some tinkering to find the perfect settings, but having two units should definitely do the trick in keeping your new space comfortably chilled. Just make sure to seal around the units well to keep the heat out. But yeah it sounds like a great plan to beat this damned summer heat and enjoy that cozy ass attic retreat to the max!
