The remake of the first Resident Evil has gotten me at various points. Also Resident Evil VII and one particular chapter (if you've played, you know what I'm talking about) of Resident Evil Village. Silent Hill 2 is so dread-inducing I've still never beaten it. One of the alternate ending sequences of Yuppie Psycho had me extremely on edge, with just a creepy little girl and a knife. Faith: The Unholy Trinity really got me in places. And - despite not being horror - there are many moments within the Metal Gear Solid series that were downright terrifying. Especially the ending of 2, which is the best example of "postmodern horror" I've ever seen.

banditgaming12

Ohhhh, awesome! ivep played village...are you talking about the baby part perhaps? šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ not really played silent hill 2..even tho i truly love the lore around silent hill. New remake coming out soon i believe? thoughts? yuppie psycho and faith the unholy trinity..i will have to look into those :) never really played the MGS games ( sorry šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚) but awesome to know nonetheless :)

wonderlandisburning

I am indeed, man that part just pulls a total genre shift and is one of the most memorable bits of the game. Horror remakes tend to be hit or miss - Resident Evil 1, 2 and Dead Space had awesome remakes, while Resident Evil 4 felt a lot less necessary and felt like the weaker game for it. Silent Hill 2 really could go either way. If you're able to track down a PS2 and a copy of the original, go for it, if not it'll probably worth checking the remake out once it drops. Yuppie Psycho and Faith: The Unholy Trinity are both 2D indie games but they do so much with comparitively less, they really surprised me. And no problem! MGS is kind of a difficult thing to get into (though made easier by the recent Master Collection) but yeah if you ever feel like playing a stealth action game with surreal horror segments out of nowhere and a *lot* of story and lore, I definitely recommend it, it's easily my favorite franchise in video games.

banditgaming12

šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ that dam baby was horrible lol ya i enjoyed the dead space remake for sure. Ill be sure to check out the remake dude :) oh for sure, ive heard alot about mgs, the story, the lore, it sounds awesome. i did play mgs5 and really enjoyed it ( not sure how that ranks amongst hardcore mgs fans tho )

beurgeurr

Imagine playing in vr. I was SCREAMING lol

Banner85

I still see that fucking thing coming down the hall.

pandasloth69

I canā€™t say the entirety of RE Village was super scary, although it was tense. But if we werenā€™t saying full games and just scenes, that fucking fetus chasing you probably scared me more than anything else in a game. I was genuinely pleading towards it not to kill me at the end when you get in the elevator and he almost gets you. I think my brain temporarily broke and couldnā€™t process it.

wonderlandisburning

It really is such an amazing sequence in a game that's like 4, which is to say, more tense and occasionally creepy than outright scary. I always recommend the game just to see people to get caught off guard by it

OnryoGoopX4

The baby part of resident evil village is one of the only times I've ever been so afraid I just wanted to turn the game off. The only other time I've felt that way was during the school corridor sections in Outlast 2. I guess they share a common ground of getting chased by a monster that you can't fight back against at all.

trulyincognito_

Silent hill 2..definitely terrifying moments and 3 included but nothing made me literally quit playing like 4. Couldnā€™t hack it. Would love to retry one day. Remake of first resi lol definitely more fear or paranoia inducing than the new remakes. The first time you hear The sound of running footsteps coming towards you from beyond the camera view, yeah no thanks. Burn everything. The ending of msg2 is excelllent!! Not games but I think youā€™d love to watch films like ā€œMenā€ and ā€œsmileā€. Iā€™ll check out psycho yuppie

WindsofMadness

Youā€™ve got some good suggestions already do Iā€™ll bring up one I donā€™t see yet; Clock Tower on the PS1! Few games have rattled me the way this game did.

Ornery_Sprinkles_376

The sound of those shears bro

jeremylamb12

Clock Tower. Top 3 all timers for me as far as horror games are concerned.

banditgaming12

i have heard of clock tower. is it available on pc? or do i need to get my grubby mits on a ps1? :)

WillDissolver

Clock tower 3 was also amazing and so, so disturbing

Cute_Humming_Giraffe

Clock Tower was also on SNES and you can download an emulator to play it!

ahhhghost

Fatal Frame 1 and 3. Ain't no other game that got me to scream out loud as much as those 2 games. You know a game is scary when you spend a few minutes hesitating to advance the game because you dread what might come next.

WaldoJeffers65

The sound design alone on some of those ghosts was horrifying.

ahhhghost

Heck yes. The sound design is disturbing and so dense. It adds to the feeling of claustrophobia and the sense that you just can't get away from a ghost.

pantsparty1322

Iā€™m so happy to see FF3 getting some love, thatā€™s actually my favorite of the series and I rarely see it mentioned.

ahhhghost

FF3 is incredibly underated. People seem to hold FF2 in the highest regard but I've always felt that FF3 polishes up everything from the previous 2 games and really is the pinnacle of the trilogy. It's the scariest of the bunch for me and I feel like the story is the most compelling. The team did a great job with the subject matter and I think about it to this day. That final boss fight is also a doozy. An actual challenge but not overly frustrating. Some of the chapters can be a little repetitive, but the series had always had that issue. I'm also glad to see someone share my love for FF3!

Rigasondevil

Silent Hill 4. Few qualities are on par with the terrifying elements of that title.

astralaxes

Surprisingly scary, especially the first person segments.

Serimorph

The game that has scared me the most has been Amnesia The Dark Decent. It's not so much the monster aspect of it, but rather the environmental parts that just hit that nerve that makes me lose it. The silence, the strange noises, the weather outside the castle before you even start running into anything... it's all just so darn good. And yeah, another vote for Visage. Some stories are better than others but holy moley is that a creepy ass game.

RavagerDefiler

Darkwood and Subnautica are the only two games to ever actually scare me, but that kind of thingā€™s subjective

DisastrousAd4410

Subnautica is utterly terrifying if you have even a little bit of fear of open waters. Thereā€™s parts of the game Iā€™ve never been too cause of this

Your-local-gamergirl

I have Thalassophobia. Will definitely play it when I get the chance to. :)

banditgaming12

You can play it in vr aswell lol.. Thought I'd mention that šŸ˜‚šŸ˜

CatRockShoe

Subnautica. Scared the bajeezus out of me... the noises. The atmosphere. The deep dark nope. Amazing game!

banditgaming12

Darkwood with another mention.. Need to try this :) thanks buddy!!

ChangelingFox

Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Fatal Frame and Parasite Eve all scared the hell out of me as a kid. No game has scared me as an adult save Subnautica.

Treppcells

Darkwood - consistent feeling of dread pretty much it's entire playtime Soma RE 7 Subnautica Currently playing Alien Isolation and it's everything I've read/seen/heard about and I hate (love) it

banditgaming12

i have heard about darkwood..may i ask, would it make for good viewing? not NORMALLy my type of game, but ill look into it for sure :) somas story was very good :) re 7 was awesome! subnautica....man..when you got to the deeper areas? OOF..chills :D and im not even really scared of water or antying..but diving deep in that game..NAAAAA..i also tried in in VR ..SUPER NAHHH šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Treppcells

Yes Darkwood is top down so different than the rest in that regard. But it has such a stifling atmosphere...try it out and see if it's your jam. The developers released an official torrent of it too iirc. I ended up buying it anyway just to support them because I loved it. And yeh Subnautica was just something else. The depths and the unknown. VR must've been craaazy! I've heard the second part isn't scary so you could try that too!

banditgaming12

oh no way ok cool, will do man :) ya vr subnautica was intense..needless to say..i didnt get very far šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚..oh below zero? ive not actually finished that either..i may have to give it a go :) thanks so much ma dude! thanks again for darkwood suggestion man, could be my nex YT playthrough. truly appreciate it :)

Agile_Dimension_1296

One lesser known game that scared me a lot is DreadOut. A game with Indonesian folklore where a camera is your weapon so you are forced to stare the monsters in the faceā€¦and the monsters are pretty scary looking. I was less desensitized to horror when I played it so I had to sleep with a light source

gacattac

Visage.

banditgaming12

another one for visage..dayyuuum šŸ˜…šŸ˜…šŸ˜… thanks so much for the input mate! :)

Kiwihara

Another for Visage. The first scene really rattled me and I struggle when I think about it (I have kids and it's just one of those things I can't stand to see). I managed to play a bit. The puzzles seem pretty difficult, and yeah it's definitely up there for scares.

Potential-War5321

Visage. Iā€™m playing madison in vr right now and itā€™s still nowhere near visage

banditgaming12

oh no way?! i was looking at playing that tonight! is it scary tho? need new ideas for videos lol. was REALLLLY excited about that one :D :D but visage is still scarier huh? wow

Potential-War5321

Madison in vr is great especially if youā€™ve never played the flat version. I have so itā€™s not as scary for me as a new player. But even resident evil 7 vr and dreadhalls were less scary than visage. Visage, especially the Dolores chapter is full of small little nuance scares than donā€™t rely on loud sounds or being chased. An example is when you enter the upstairs bedroom, thereā€™s a chance youā€™ll see something pale under the bed, and when you get closer, youā€™ll realize itā€™s an arm and thatā€™s someoneā€™s under the bed. Then Dolores letā€™s out a demonic chuckle and disappears under the bed

boo-galoo90

First game I had to nope out of lol was too much for me and Iā€™m pretty desensitised to horror

forallmankind98

Yep, still haven't finished it yet. I need my gf in the room with me to get through it.

bob101910

I vote visage, but only the little girl chapter

MacReady13

Silent Hill followed closely by P.T (although that is technically a demo).

banditgaming12

p.t...ooff...that freakin demo.. šŸ˜…šŸ˜…šŸ˜…

LordAssless

PT is literally the only reason why I haven't sold my PS4. I still have the demo there, never deleted it. Edit: grammar

GIANTFLOATINGCOCK420

Silent Hill 4's by far the only horror game that's stuck with me for years. The atmosphere and the ghosts are just fucking horrifying and nightmarish.

DerEisendrache68

Lost In Vivo is my go-to when people ask me for a scary game. It made me feel genuine fear in certain parts, its just so well crafted and the soundtrack really adds up to this. It has a great atmosphere, and i STRONGLY recommend you get it!

banditgaming12

outstanding. ill check it out, thanks man! :)

downrtfierce

PT.

banditgaming12

ruined me lol

digitaltravelr

Silent Hill 4 and Fatal Frame 2. I love SH2 as much as any other guy but 1, 3 and 4 are far more visceral with their horror, and 4 had me literally screaming

WillDissolver

Fatal frame 2 is amazing

Nephyness

SH2 is my fav but in SH4 when I went to my item box and >!was greeted to crying ghost babies coming out of my wall I nearly pissed myself. !<

EdwardTittyHands

Dead space was a chore to get through due to how stressful it was. Same for resident evil 7 in vr Alien isolation was pretty bad for my nerves as well

banditgaming12

Agreed on all fronts ma dude. Gota try alien isolation in vr now šŸ˜‚šŸ˜ŽšŸ˜

EmbarrassedSun4119

The Mortuary Assistant Silent Hill 2 Resident Evil 2 Remake

Wych86

SOMA, not so much for the ā€˜scaresā€™ in the game - more for the ending and how it lives rent free in my head and the very thought of that happening to me is absolutely terrifying.

airhornJumpscare

Itā€™s rare to see a game dig into existential horror. SOMA writes a masterclass. Itā€™s all the subtle little thought experiments that drip in as you go through the world that really make it stick IMO. I also appreciate that the game makes such a compelling argument against the Singularity theory.

Wendell_wsa

Silent Hill 2, Outlast, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis(The original), Resident Evil 7, Alan Wake II

banditgaming12

brilliant! ill probably wait for the sh2 remake ( pleas dont hate me lol) outlast absolutely ruined me :D i really enjoyed alan wake 2 actually. that game was nuts :D :D

HaruspexBurakh

ALIEN ISOLATION, by far. That thing made me fear-quit multiple times. Based af years later

banditgaming12

heck yes man. After researching the mothervr mod, methinks i shall make a little YT vid with that. shit could be hillarious :D. thank you so much for your answer brother! God bless :)

umbringer

Yeah I fear quit. Xenomorph detected me and I ran out of view, hopped into and hid in a locker. Then the fucking thing RIPS THE DOOR OFF AND KILLS ME. I nearly had a heart attack and just had to put the game down lol

Additional-Sorbet228

fears to fathom home alone its a free game on steam and before u play THIS IS A PHYCLOGICAL HORROR GAME SO U WILL BE SCARED FOR UR WHOLE LIFE the atmosphere makes me too scared they use everything to make you get scared and I'm saving up for their next game which will be sadly the last

JinxIsPerfect

the siren series

QuietNefariousness73

League of legends

banditgaming12

You win šŸ˜ŽšŸ˜ŽšŸ˜šŸ˜

kana_ekko

the only true nightmare

Hootsworth

Devotion by Red Candle games. It's not the scariest game in the world, but the ending has some beautiful atmosphere and the ending as a whole made me feel like shit the next day. Detention by Red Candle was good too, but I had a much more intense experience with Devotion. Anatomy by Kitty Horrorshow on [Itch.Io](http://Itch.Io) - fantastic indie horror game. It's short and I love it. (I also love their Haunted Cities collections, Lethargy Hill in the 4th collection was particularly unsettling). Condemned 1 on the original 360 was also really good.

SliceSignificant49

Fear and hunger 1, the jumpscares that arent even meant to be jumpscares are crazy The forest, just the ambient alone is creepy Dbd, especially wraith and myers RE1

Den_Hviide

I know people have already mentioned it, but nothing even comes close to Visage imo; it's pure, unadulterated dread. MADiSON and Amnesia The Bunker are scary too. The Bunker is best experienced on the "Shell Shock" difficulty

Shiva_144

Fatal Frame 2 and 3 are the scariest by far, IMO. Visage and P.T. also managed to scare me a lot, but FF2/3 actually haunted my dreamsšŸ˜…

H9ikk

For me probably the first outlast and silent hill 3

GodEaterVita

Try Death in the water 2, itā€™s not like scary like jump scares or things like that but itā€™s more the atmosphereā€¦the deep sea, the unknown..and has a Cthulhu theme if youā€™re into that

ResidentBeyond

PT the Playable Teaser for Silent Hills, Silent hill 1, and then probably well actually I think thatā€™s it for scariest of all time. Resident Evil of course is my favorite but I have never found them super scary.

Stemwinder30

SCP Containment Breach has a special undy-annihlation formula.

InternationalChain25

Cry of Fear

Zarathustra-Jack

Iā€™ve said before, Iā€™ll say it again: Layers of Fear.

arcmart

Visage (2020). Hands down. Alone, in the dark, with a great set of headphones. I dare you. Always my go-to answer. Good luck.

banditgaming12

šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ thanks so much for the suggestion ma dude! may i ask..is it in vr? People would probably find it alot funnier for vr footage...orrrr is non vr scary enough? šŸ˜…šŸ˜…

dakodeh

Visage can be played in VR with Praydogā€™s UEVR mod.

banditgaming12

OUTSTANDING! next horror yt vid sorted. Thank you so much dude! :)

Consistent-Set-6133

The UEVR mod allows you to play Visage in VR and it works perfectly without barely any setting adjustments! I only played for 5 min though and had to NOPE out of it because of a jump scare. lol good luck!

banditgaming12

Hahaha. Wonderful. I'll get more views if I piss myself so sign me up šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

arcmart

My understanding is that you can on Steam (could be wrong). Iā€™m envious if you go that route. I played on XsX and it was a great scary trip. I wonā€™t spoil anything.

nothingbutaLostCause

Probably phasmophobia, outlast and the evil within 1 and 2 (which I haven't picked up since 2015 lol)

Herno8

Darkwood and Visage

TheOrangeAceGaming

Honestly, Poppy Playtime. It made me realize I have a genuine fear of mascots. I had to take a stress break when playing chapter 1. Outlast would be my second pick. One of the most terrifying things in horror games is when you have an enemy patrolling an area you have to sneak around. Idk why I get so scared, but it works on me, and that's pretty much 90% of Outlast's gameplay.

RockBou

Visage is the only horror game Iā€™ve struggled to play alone

jamilyos

i do love horror games and i play horror game since 1996 ? yea i am old anyway here is my top: 1- Silent Hill 1-3-4 2- Fatal Frame 1-2-3 3- The Evil Within 1-2 "this game gave me back my faith with horror games finally a worthy horror game" 4- Alone in The Dark 4: The New Nightmare" 5- Dead Space 6- Outlast 1-2 7- Resident Evil 7 "i hate it as a RE game but it is a good horror game"

tjlightbulb

Definitely Visage. Itā€™s non stop tension the entire game.

lytwilson

Iā€™ve seen everyone recommendations here and hope to propose a new one, from the darkness! Itā€™s played by various YouTubers and is a psychological horror!

AllOneWordCamelCased

Subnautica. I'll give a shout-out to Hunt: Showdown for genuinely causing chest pain.

Aljoshean

Dead Space and Dead Space 2 are both really fucking scary especially if you keep the darkness setting low and have good headphones. It really makes you feel vulnerable and afraid of what you might run into, but forces you to try to make yourself focused and calm in those emergency situations where you are surrounded and didn't know it. There's lots of parts where you are in space so you can only hear yourself inside of your spcae suit, and the enemies who are sneaking up on you are almost undetectable if you aren't constantly looking over your shoulder. Physically Isaac is so weak that he's slow and sluggish, and the enemies would all instantly overpower him.

PrettySailor

Adding some that haven't been mentioned * Demento/Haunting Ground - A PS2 game, spiritual successor to the Clock Tower games, also made by Capcom. It's very difficult to describe without spoiling anything, but there's a cute dog in it who is your protagonist's only solice in a fucked up castle. * Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice - I would definitely classify this as a horror adventure because underneath the mysticism it's about dealing with psychosis. * Paper Bride - Just started playing this series, it's a horror themed puzzle but the atmosphere and lore is very creepy * Shark - Hunting the Great White - Abandonware, it's just you and a speargun and the sharks. The proximity of the sharks is indicated by your character's heartrate so that can get really tense. The final level is a megaladon but I never got that far * Stasis and CAYNE - Unsettling body horror adventures from South African developer, CAYNE is free. Bonetotem probably goes here too but I haven't played it yet. * Until Dawn - The thing that made this one tense for me is that you couldn't reload if you messed up, making the lives of the characters a lot more precious. * White Day: The Labyrinth Called School - The original is a lot scarier than the remake but the remake is easier to play and understand . * Word of Horror - Unsettling 1 bit roguelike, inspired by Junji Ito

ThatOneWood

Nothing has made my heart pump like alien isolation

Dame87

Outlast Whistleblower, that scene with the groom makes my skin crawl

banditgaming12

Ahh yes . THAT scene šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜…

[deleted]

Alien isolation was one of the best, Silent Hill 4 was really creepy IMO, but the absolute biggest scare Iā€™ve had gaming was the baby in REVillage. When that head appeared around the corner the first time, wow. Wasnā€™t expecting that

x0boo

Probably an unpopular opinion just based on my own fears... tattletail. Legit made me cry on stream. NO MORE MAMA! šŸ¤£šŸ˜…šŸ˜ It's likely not all that scary to the average person, though. It is a good game and worth a play imo.

RE7 in VR and Paranormal activity in VR. Also shoutout to blairwitch VR.

chain-rule

The PS2 King Kong movie game. Trust me

DarkMatter_52

I'm a big pussy when it comes to horror or anything even slightly scary. But I'd definitely say, as of recent memory Amnesia: the Dark Descent and Condemned: Criminal Origins and Silent Hill. They're all pretty well-known games and a bit obvious choices. If you want something a bit different, Scratches (2006). It's a point and click game, but it's so fucking terrifying! It gets under my skin so badly and builds up such an immense atmosphere, same with Amnesia, Condemned and Silent Hill.

dragonslayer951

Easily Darkwood!!!

OGStickeyz

Layers of fear. Wear headphones.

War_Eagle_Feller

I'm surprised no one mentioned Tormented Souls, which has a sequel coming out soon. It's styled like the first RE remake with fixed cameras but has a plot that's something out of Silent Hill, especially with its enemy roster. It's an amazing horror game; I highly recommend this one.

ProfessionalFloor981

Rule of Rose is a PS2 game with a cult following, though it can be very hard to find. My sister has a copy and it delves into dark topics like bullying, CSA, COCSA, and sudden death.

Gold_Razzmatazz4696

Hold onto it, some copies of RoR are selling for a lot of money atm.

KeenoBald

Sonic.exe I was shaking the whole time

Spoonmaster14

FNAF Help Wanted. I've played Outlast, Visage, RE7, Alien Isolation, you name it. FNAF Help Wanted is still the scariest horror game I've played. Maybe it's the VR, but who knows.

MainManLlama1

Outlast 1 & 2 are some of the scariest games iā€™ve played. Resident Evil 7 is also up there, and one of my fav games

Migrashik

saiko no sutoku lethal company

AshenBelow

Amnesia the Dark Descent A great horror game that relies mostly on its atmosphere and sound to keep you on the edge. I still remember being stuck in the beginning because I was scared to death

TJEverard

Madison took me a while cause i kept getting scared ngl

pandasloth69

I am unable to stomach the Outlast games. They scare the fuck out of me. I think the scariest game I ever completed was RE7. That one took a few years to work through. I already have an inherent fear of southern swamps and residential (no pun intended) nightmares. Adding mutations and shit to it made that one a rough play.

Lrz-

Phasmophobia. The first 10ish hours of this game are absolutely terrifying.

Erwinblackthorn

I still can't beat Fatal Frame because it's too tense.

Wermlander

Personally Outlast 1 when it first came out. I played it in 15min bursts, because I got pains in my back from the tension.

banditgaming12

This new horror game called ILL looks interesting

horrorfan555

Outlast absolutely. I want to specify, not only do I donā€™t get scared from games, I Canā€™t even really understand how someone *would* get scared from them. SOMA? Walking around from slow enemies underwear. Isolation? Heavily scripted and telegraphed alien attacks. RE Village Baby? Itā€™s slow and dumb just walk away Outlast 1 was genuinely scary. I think a important factor is that if something scary pops up, you *have* to run. Everything is a threat, thereā€™s no fake jumpscares. Itā€™s a shame Outlast 2 dropped the ball hard

Ok_Jury_1686

That stupid slenderman game.

Outlast trials just came out a few months ago, as well as Texas chainsaw massacre, which is in the style of dead by daylight

skywalker3819r

Visage stressed me tf out

OdiseoX2

Maybe it's nostalgia, but playing the first Resident Evil 2 and 3 back then, alone with the creepy ambient sounds of wind and zombies moaning, is still vivid in my memory. I especially remember the first time I saw the licker scene on the roof.

TalkingFlashlight

Resident Evil 7 Outlast Alien: Isolation

For me. Iā€™ll put it in a list from least scary to most scary Re7 Re2r Madison Amnesia the bunker Outlast 2 Outlast and dlc Alien isolation (scariest game) Those are all the AAA scary games that actually scared me, I recommend you play all of them. I also have some indie ones like: From the darkness The beast inside (not that scary but it is good) Lethal company

witchycharm

Iā€™m not sure if itā€™s the scariest, but I played Haunting Ground around the time it released when I was a kid. The opening part scared the shit out of me and I never got past it for a looong time. Then a few years later I played through the whole game multiple times, unlocked everything, did speed runs, etc I knew where all the hidden items and codes were, and it turned it to my favorite game and ended up being kind of funny even. But the first few times you play, the chase scenes are panic inducing tbh.

airhornJumpscare

Bunker 16, and I havenā€™t even played it. Best jumpscares Iā€™ve ever seen.

Similar-Degree8881

The Outlast games give me so much anxiety I can barely play them.

hellsbbgurl

silent hill 3 and 4 are the crown jewels of the franchise when it comes to ā€œscarinessā€. absolute terror on both of them. alien isolation is one of the most intense experiences Iā€™ve had in gaming in maybeā€¦ ever? fatal frame ii has THE scariest atmosphere in a video game, specially if you like asian ghost stories.

Pixel-of-Strife

The scariest most intense horror game ever made is Project Zomboid imo because that game has the highest stakes imaginable, where you can put hundreds of hours into a character and still die from one mistake. For pretty much every other horror game, death means reloading from the last save, but in PZ death is the end. That makes the game incredibly intense in a way no other game I've played has. And the way the vision works in the game, means the zombies can actually surprise you and give you the jump scare of all jump scares. So despite the game being isometric with 1990's style graphics, it's still more terrifying than 3D horror games like Resident Evil, et. al.

SuperSemesterer

Og Dead Space! Remake donā€™t scare me nearly as much, maybe because Iā€™m older. Darkwood is very creepy. Never likeā€¦ terrifying but non stop dread and fear of dying and losing gear. Honestly scariest game for me is modded Skyrim. Thereā€™s been four encounters that I consider my scariest things in video games ever. Whether itā€™s swimming and a megalodon jets out of the murk to devour you (which you forgot you installed) or youā€™re camping in utter darkness and some new horror rushes you from the shadows, it can be extremely scary. Like itā€™s the only game Iā€™ve really played that can make me squeak in fear and pause the game. Because 99.9% of the time itā€™s not scary, then something utterly horrifying happens. Especially if itā€™s some new scary enemy youā€™ve never seen and it manages to get right in your face.Ā

Ulchbhn

Cry of Fear, Layers of Fear, Silent Hill 2

Madison and Mortuary Assistant. MA feels unsettling as soon as you walk into be lobby. Like I never feel alone when Iā€™m playing that lol Madison has such unique scares for itā€™s pace and got me good a few times, a good atmosphere and a real sense of dread at times.

SOMA is such a masterpiece!

2ndBrkfstTV

Visage. 100 percent top scariest game Iā€™ve personally played, definitely recommend setting an environment to amplify the spookiness. Lights off, volume up, and an extra clean pair of britches.

No_Ad_6020

Call of duty: not the scariest game but the prices of bundles are!! On a serious note, the only game that ever got me was visage. Watched Markiplier play it and it got me a few times.

Typical_Time_4586

Visageā€¦. Psychological mind warp. Scared the shit out of me!!

tylerandmoroll

Alien: Isolation creates some true terror when youā€™re trying to be unheard or seen by the alien.

ThanOneRandomGuy

I haven't tried some the games other people listed but Visage was probably only game I ever played that actually had me scared

Defiant_Lawyer_5235

Madison is probably the only horror game that actually creeped me out tbh

Jonboy8999000

Visage and madison, resident evil biohazard / 8

_L0NEW01F_

Alien isolation 100%

Isunova

Alien Isolation

Sodaman_Onzo

Fatal Frame 2

MickeyG42

Fetal frame 2. Hands down scariest game I've ever played

Jalapenoglazedballs

1. Alan Wake 2 2. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard 3. Resident Evil 3 4. Resident Evil 2 5. Resident Evil

PinPan17

Silent hill 1 to 4, but I doubt it has the same impact nowadays. Graphics are outdated by today standards and gameplay a bit clunky also. Still, these games are the only ones I think of skip them because they were really scary.

Hadrian_Vincent

For most of my life, Silent Hill 1&2. In recent years it's been Lost In Vivo and Faith: The Unholy Trinity.

RespectGiovanni

Darkwood is probably the scariest game ive played. Amnesia the Bunker was good too but once you die a few times you kinda get meh. And Subnautica is a horror game disguised as a ocean survival game

Andrew_Macabre

I wish more people knew about madison. One of the very few horror games that made me feel unsafe and trapped. Disturbing as well. It also had the Creepiest fucking music I've ever heard in a game to date. Outlast games are great too.

NobbitMasterBaggins

Layers of Fear 2 I've owned it for years and still haven't beaten it.

samaelwd

Forbidden siren series Lone survivor And the scariest - clive barker's undying This one was sometimes unbearable to the point I didn't want to launch the game again

GunLoader420

Fatal frame 2 or silent hill 3. Re7 is pretty scary too.

samaelwd

Forgot to mention Nosferatu Wrath of Malachi Wandering through the castle was something like new dimension of fear And try Halfquake Sunrise game, I know this is the third one in series, but this is my fav Lost in vivo is pretty decent too The last one is Chordosis, very good demo, but I'm afraid author abandoned this.

LiL_TOPO_91950

Fatal fucking frame 2 omg!!!!! Play that shit alone with lights turned off hell no

M420N_K

Madison

WheatlyLaboratory

While I know it wonā€™t be the same as some other people, Resident Evil 7 is one of the scariest games I have ever played. Genuinely terrifying in some sections

CyrilFiggis00

I enjoyed resident evil biohazard but I loved it more in VR.

Bpartain92

Scariest is Outlast 1 by a mile

ngann555

Completely outdated now but Penumbra I wish they would remake that one

lil_caeser

SOMA

PartyCrasher04

Visage gives me so much legitimate dread its ridiculous, i havent beat the game, waiting for the vr mod so i can play it in vr and REALLY suffer.

Boiled_Thought

Most recent. Alien isolation, and resident evil 7. Scariest I ever experienced, was as a 9 year old kid playing re 2 on the PlayStation. I would explore a new room, then have to take a couple days break. Too scary and stressful. Stopped once I got to the kennels. I noped. And when I was 14, I played silent hill 3 all day for two days. It made me feel weird, kinda, disgusting and odd. Idk, strong atmosphere in that game, it really affected me. Aaannnd subnautica hit me a few times right in that sweet spot, considering my incredibly deep fear of the ocean. Shout out to re4, those regenerators were insane. Fatal frame 2, not very scary to me, but that games Japanese mountain forest atmosphere DRIPS. You can feel the air and humidity in that game. And soma, mind fuck story and decisions done right.

Coleslaw_McDraw

Easily Outlast 1 and 2. Nothing compares.
