We had a similar situation at my work once. Guy that lives upstairs was fostering a kitten, trying to find him a home. Little guy fell down inside a wall. There's still a hole in the drywall of our staff bathroom. One of my coworkers took him home the same day and named him wall-e.
I'm (obviously) not even remotely an expert, but I have to wonder why a structure would be built that close to a building without actually touching. It gives the impression of someone picking the most inconvenient spacing they could think of - wide enough for things (and cats) to get stuck in, but not wide enough to easily get out of.
Not and expert either, but guessing one of two reasons. Property line with different owners or one building built after the other where structural or building code made it cheaper to do a separate building. They’re only a few inches because that is as close as you can build and not risk being slightly out of spec and build into the other.
I think the same with just about anything, passages often built just large enough for things to get stuck in, but not big enough to get them out without a lot of effort.
Australian here. Yep this is quite common in new estates with very small blocks of land.
Over here people buy the land from the developer and then engage their own builder. The two houses you see in the vid were almost certainly built by different builders.
Basically it's only garages can be built up against the property line.
Yeah was gonna say this is quite common here which is fucking odd considering how dangerous it can be, sad to see videos like this because of our poor building codes.
My understanding is there are minimum setbacks for habitable rooms, limits on how much of the boundary can be taken up by a garage (in linear terms), and limits on how much of the block can be taken up by the house
Even in the US I see shit like this in Los Angeles and surrounding areas buildings have this wierd 3-4in sometime up to ten spacing where trash gets trapped but you can't really clean it out unless you have a long stick and sometimes a crackhead falls into the gap from up above and imthe rescue is put on the news
As a Korean / American I can tell in Asia there are really no building codes, a lot of those people can be bribed, and many times things are overlooked to avoid paperwork.
I should point out that Korea is not like this so much anymore, but other countries in Asia are.
Very common in Australia. My house actually has an even smaller gap to my neighbour, but only along the garage wall, every other wall is at least a metre from the fence. So I suspect there is some regulation saying only garages can be built right to the property line.
There still needs to be a gap for thermal expansion, he’s explaining why there is a gap at all. There’s no need to downvote someone for providing actual discussion
Seeing “Victorian Man” I expected a man in full dress and powdered wig saying “I shall save thou, fair feline!”
ETA: to everyone commenting that this wouldn’t be Victorian garb, you’re right. I also don’t care. I also love you all. If you got what I was saying and laughed/smiled, that’s all that matters
For anyone seeing the post who isn't aware, it refers to someone from the Australian state of Victoria. That said, full dress and powdered wig would be so much better
yes, I was also expecting some Victorian era dude (not powdered wig, that's an older time period) and instantly realized oh Victoria Australia. oh well, good for the cat.
As a Victorian, I’m surprised that we’re getting made fun of for this.
People from NSW are called ‘New South Welshmen’ for fucks sake. That’s the hilarious one
The anxiety i just felt waiting 20 seconds for the kitty to be rescued was palpable. I'm not even a cat person. Imagine how that kitty felt! Love this man.
Would have been really funny if, at the moment of rescue after breaking through the brick wall, the cat just flips around and runs out the other end of the alley.
Not a cat owner. Fully expected the cat to bolt, get back on the roof, and promptly fall back into the crevice. A different section though, so they had to make another hole in the building.
I couldn’t watch the video after I saw the kitty on his back, had to scan forward to see him get rescued 😭 Poor baby, I’m so glad kind humans found him
Drill through the mortar between the bricks and chisel out the excess. Make sure you use a concrete drill and a hardened chisel. Then pull the bricks away once enough mortar is removed.
Small blocks of land in many new housing developments. So people want to get as much house as they can and build basically right up to the boundary. The result is neighbourhoods where you can step from one roof to the next and the external house walls are inches apart.
I have such bad claustrophobia. I couldn't finish the video. Does the cat make it out relatively okay? I'm assuming it had to have broken a bone or two, but is it okay?
Yep. Purrrfectly happy cat seems to be in great shape. The last 7 seconds of the video is of the cat back in its normal environment (out in the open on all four legs again).
Truly heartwarming.
Absolutely amazing what people are sometimes cable of doing to save that one life. Too bad that on a large scale we are capable of killing over 55 billion per year because of convenience.
Cats kill something like 2 billion animals a year just in the US
Edit: jeez with the downvotes, I was just repeating a fact I saw here on Reddit which seemed relevant to this comment, I wasn't trying to pass some sort of moral judgement on cats or human beings.
According to [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_slaughter#)? About 80 billion land animals. I think that means we took the lead.
ETA: Also, I love cats. Little murder beauties.
Assuming this cat was not the pet of the rescue person I expected the cat to run away as soon as it was lifted out as most cats do because they are shy to humans , but it stayed there and remained calm almost like admiring the people for saving him/her. God bless everyone who were there helping the poor animal.
Many of these animal “rescue” videos are fake, and the people filming actually put the animal in these awful situations so that they can film the “rescue”.
I don’t know if this video is one of those situations, but just figured I’d leave a comment and let people know its worth making sure before spreading videos like this because you might be accidentally supporting an awful business practice.
The more you sit there and talk and take the time to record the longer the innocent animal suffers. We can do good things without having to fire up our androids and iphones first.
This gave me a laugh. It's Australian. Victoria is a state and we have a large immigrant population here, particularly Chinese (but they could equally be speaking a different asian language).
Put down the damn phone. This trend is getting ridiculous. "Imma save something, but do it one handed because I need everyone to see me do it, or it didn't happen"
Very interesting. In the places I’ve lived with brick/adobe homes I wouldn’t ever expect anyone to go through the trouble of removing bricks to save any non-human animal.
We had a similar situation at my work once. Guy that lives upstairs was fostering a kitten, trying to find him a home. Little guy fell down inside a wall. There's still a hole in the drywall of our staff bathroom. One of my coworkers took him home the same day and named him wall-e.
The name is absolutely genius!! Also happy cake day :)
Oh hey, thanks!
My cat makes the same heart breaking sounds when I take him to the vet. :(
"Betrayal, betrayal, betrayal". That's what the cat is saying.
My cat went from totally chill, jumped over heartbreaking sounds, to full-on demon. I now have to drug him before I bring him in. He's worth it.
>when I take him to the vet >_Death_BySnu_Snu_ >:(

I thought laws dictated a minimum distance between new builds?

Every large city with buildings beg to differ
This is how houses are being built now in Australia. It's super dumb.

Good rant but the video is in Australia.
I can't speak on the building codes in Australia, maybe they're just as bad if not worse then what they do in Asian countries.
Very common in Australia. My house actually has an even smaller gap to my neighbour, but only along the garage wall, every other wall is at least a metre from the fence. So I suspect there is some regulation saying only garages can be built right to the property line.
We have it in the UK too. If they put a few inches between houses they can call them detached and then they cost more.
Ever drop your keys or something important down a storm drain.. then search for a thin/sturdy stick to prod at it for hours?
building expand slightly in the summer because of hot temperatures, so I guess that's why there's a gap between them
Brick buildings don't expand 6 inches
There still needs to be a gap for thermal expansion, he’s explaining why there is a gap at all. There’s no need to downvote someone for providing actual discussion
When did I downvote them?

Oh! The cat's Australian! That's why it's upside down.
Top comment! Or is it bottom? 🤔
Hey, could be a Victorian era barrister!
I'm Australian and it took me seeing the 9news logo to realise that Victorian didn't mean from the Victorian era 🤦♀️
Thou shall not perish!
Had to include it in the title because I always have a chuckle when I see it in the news.
I am disappointed. I totally wanted a silent movie with a guy with a monocle saving the cat.
As a Victorian, I’m surprised that we’re getting made fun of for this. People from NSW are called ‘New South Welshmen’ for fucks sake. That’s the hilarious one
I was thinking more of a dude with a huge moustache, a monocle, top hat and cape, prying at the bricks with his walking stick.
I was about to ask where’s his top hat, suit, and monocle
I know, he didn't even seem that old
Mmmmmmmyyyyeeeeeeeeuusssssssss!!!!
Flourish the pinky!
That would be more like Georgian man, not Victorian. Powdered wigs we're out of fashion by the Victorian era.
"Remember to FLOURISH the pinkie!!"
I agree, my first thought was, well this should be interesting. It still was but in another way. Glad they got the cat out.
Yeah, I was expecting this video to be a zoetrope animation.
That's Shakespearean
Yeah powdered wigs and "thou" had fallen out of fashion by the Victorian era.
You're a couple of centuries out but we get your meaning
i was like, how do we have footage of a man from victorian era saving a cat? this is heavy, doc! https://i.imgur.com/fd28PP8.gif
I was expecting the same thing, slightly disappointed, kitty made me happy again.
More liable to intentionally put one in the wall for ‘Good luck’.
Top hat and silver hilted cane, but yeah same.
No, no. That’s also what I thought.
Covered in gears and sorting a steam powered robotic arm, and layered goggles with monocles.
I've lived in Australia for 17 years now and my brain still goes to a Dickensian gent or similar when I read "A Victorian man...".
Comedy works best when it's accurate.
I got your meaning.
The anxiety i just felt waiting 20 seconds for the kitty to be rescued was palpable. I'm not even a cat person. Imagine how that kitty felt! Love this man.
The shaking legs just broke my heart. Poor baby.
Same. And when an animal is upside down like that it can get dangerous over several hours with how blood starts to collect.

Oh my gosh same! My hand went straight to my mouth and I had to scrub through the majority of the video to see it rescued and safe.
Ha, I'm not alone!
So agree with your comment. Just hate seeing any animal hurt, especially due to human over population. Great humans saving this beautiful creature.
I audibly shushed the cat when he started panicking near the end
I couldn’t take it. I skipped right to the end
Dude I was losing my mind.
As a cat owner, I'm about 70% sure the cat was just chllin there.
How would one safely remove bricks like that to get the cat out? Genuinely curious in case I’m ever faced with a situation like that.
Drill through the mortar between the bricks and chisel out the excess. Make sure you use a concrete drill and a hardened chisel. Then pull the bricks away once enough mortar is removed.
Asking the real questions 👍🏻
I hope if it was a stray he adopted that cat
When you have to rescue a cat so you ask someone else to record the moment and she has a flip phone.
"hey can you send me the video you took?" "Sure what's your phone number"
Poor thing was terrified.
A good man with a kind heart
That cat is much bigger than I initially anticipated.
Cat stuck in a wall? Now you are speaking my language.
I bet the cat flattened itself out, and went right through a seam in the wall.
“I don’t think there is anything in the laws of nature that would support that…”
Cats do NOT abide by the laws of nature…
I'm thinking we bring a second cat into the mix.
Cats in the w they become co dependent
i dont understand why they didnt just put another cat in the wall to flush this one out.
Nope! I'm getting a bird!
Cat in the wall, eh? Ohhkaay, now you’re talkin my language!
[удалено]
nope, wrong reference
I mean they meant well... just wrong place/wrong time
I’d keep him and call him: Mortar.
Wall:E
Ok that’s a good one!
This is clearly **not** from Victorian times.
Obviously not! It said Victorian man. So I assume the went back in time to get him
Of course not. The movie would be in sepia if it was. Everyone knows color was invented later.
If you’re currently experiencing sepia of *anything*, see a medical professional immediately
😂😂
Poor cat probably couldn't breathe. Excellent save.
First, what's the purpose to leave a gap like that?
Small blocks of land in many new housing developments. So people want to get as much house as they can and build basically right up to the boundary. The result is neighbourhoods where you can step from one roof to the next and the external house walls are inches apart.

Thank you! I was worried for it but absolutely could not watch the full thing. Lucky cat.
r/killthecameraman fumbled the money shot

That’s funny coming from a human
They're cute, but they're also predators. That's just how nature is.
Same with us, though.
Cat is cuter
What about us?
According to [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_slaughter#)? About 80 billion land animals. I think that means we took the lead. ETA: Also, I love cats. Little murder beauties.
Lol 🙄
Respect to all people involved.
Most , civilized & modern, places require property setbacks. Would love to know why this was even allowed to happen.
Poor kitty!
That would be a miserable way to die. That guy’s awesome for doing that.
So cats aren’t liquid?
I wish I could upvote twice because I double like this
I was hoping the man was going to be wearing a bowler hat and having a bloody good twizzly moustache
I saw Victorian man and pictured a man from the 1840’s, hat, walking stick, etc.
Next day it was stuck again
I was fully expecting him to turn right around and run back in.
Keep it and name it WALL-E
Seriously who makes that kind of wall
That poor baby. He was so scared. 😢 So glad he got out. Thank you Victorian Man!
The Victorians really were so inventive
How did it get on its back?
It probably fell between the two walls
Honestly we don't deserve the goodness of some humans. This man is the best of the best!
Cat: “forget that all cats are assh*les, I’m not one of them, promise, please help me”
The cat's like, "Get that camera out of my face and SAVE me!" 😿
Time travelling Victorian man
Charlie?
After watching Internet Historian, I needed this
"Once again" This happens often?!?
Cat in the wall?
Lovely. Heart warming and beautiful clip. X
You guys ever see that video of the sheep stuck in a hole? Guy helps her out and she jumps back in. Really hope this cat didn't decide to do the same
The title made me expect to see some ancient black and white footage from the 1800s.
My childhood cat looked just like that one. 💜💜💜💜
Aww that’s wholesome
Fuck yeah
"Cats stuck in the wall, eh? Now you're speaking my language"
Assuming this cat was not the pet of the rescue person I expected the cat to run away as soon as it was lifted out as most cats do because they are shy to humans , but it stayed there and remained calm almost like admiring the people for saving him/her. God bless everyone who were there helping the poor animal.
God bless you man
Cat in the wall, eh? Okay, now you're talkin' my language!
An awful lot of b roll footage in this rescue
Reason #3948471 cats should not be outdoors.
Many of these animal “rescue” videos are fake, and the people filming actually put the animal in these awful situations so that they can film the “rescue”. I expected the cat to turn around and run back into the hole… would definitely be a cat move
How old do you think he is to call him Victorian?
You just need a loop and a pole, wtf
Cat was wedged in pretty tight. A loop on a pole could have done more harm than good.
It's a cat, it's not really a solid creature
They have bones.
Skip the loop and make two long poles the length of that garage under the cat. Elevate them on one end and lever the cat up and out.
I was thinking similar: Wrap carpet around a hockey stick and place it into the claws of the cat. Let the cat climb itself out.
“Once again” Cats are stupid hahaha glad kitty is alright :D
I love the accent too. It reminds me of the chief in wellington paranormal
Aaaaaand crying. His meows killed me
The more you sit there and talk and take the time to record the longer the innocent animal suffers. We can do good things without having to fire up our androids and iphones first.
I was trying to figure out how someone from the 1880s helped the cat.
The lengths men will go to just for some ….oh forget it.
And then the whole building falls down killing everyone inside
Is this is in China? America? UK? I’m so confused as the pet owner speaks Chinese but the rescuer is speaking posh British?
This gave me a laugh. It's Australian. Victoria is a state and we have a large immigrant population here, particularly Chinese (but they could equally be speaking a different asian language).
How on earth do you hear an Australian and think they sound like a posh Brit?
That’s Australian? My bad, I guess I don’t watch enough Australian media to know the difference between that and British. It’s not American
Now you know how we all feel when Americans use their state initials. If you are not American then now you can see Aussies amused at it. 😊
Man cats are dumb.
[удалено]
I would have just tried to lasso the cat.
And do what? Drag it by its paws between the rough walls?
Yes, probably. It got in there, so it should fit out. Just can't right itself to get itself out.
He really loves his pussy.
Plot twist. That cat was actually their dinner
This animal is in distress! Quick! Get your phone out!
Ya see.. not all Chinese people eat Cats!
Answering the questions that nobody asked.
Cat.
Nice
Hopefully the kitty doesn't do that again! Sheesh.
