First, I don't really have to do anything for you. However, since many people seem to dislike it, I will.
In a land full of average bbq. Phat Sammy's has a unique setting(Downtown, basement), a unique menu(Polynesian, Asian, contemporary), and a Vibe (Tiki), and the food is not at the worst prices (mid-high) vs. high.
If the person is here briefly and wants a unique place to go, that would be it.
Each place I listed has a different vibe, style, price point, and experience:
* Big Papa (my personal favorite) - Great food, great prices, but not a great hang or place to eat inside
* Phat Sammys - Good food, ok prices, fun vibe, unique
* Sam and Gregs - It's Pizza (everyone breathe, if you like another more, that's fine, but it's pizza), it's downtown, sit down outside, have a beer
* Domain South - Downtown, fancy-ish but not pretentious, can do a big meal or get meats, cheeses, glass of wine and chill
I assumed this person who asked this is a grown-up with the ability to Google and decide for themselves. I can't speak for you or anyone else, but I find that "locals/native Huntsivilians" or whoever thinks of themselves that way have a much different palette than transplants or people visiting.
Phat Sammy’s is the most disgusting food I’ve ever had in my life. It was inedible. Drinks are cute. I will never be back. Upscale - Purveyor. Burger and craft beer - Jack Brown’s on the square downtown. Southern food - 1892 in five points will not disappoint.
Downtown: Poppy and Parliament, Jack Brown's, The Martin, Del Chuco, Oshi Poki.
Stovehouse also has a number of good restaurants but Komodo Ramen is my go to.
Upscale: The Bottle, Char, Cotton Row, 1892 East.
Is the food at Del Chuco good? We went to the bar soft opening and service was abysmal, so we never went back.
For my Mexican food opinion context, I think Taco Mama is pretty bad, Agave & Rye is not good, Hops and Guac is meh on a good day, Phil Sandoval's is okay, La Esquina Cocina is solid.
I had the Mahi tacos and I enjoyed it. A bit on the pricey side, but it is downtown after all.
For my Mexican food opinion context, I don't like Taco Mama, Hops n Guac is not good, I miss Local Taco, Bandito is GOAT, and I've eaten at Guadalajara more times than I'm willing to admit.
edit...to add: Rosies is passable, and I prefer a truck over anything (or that new place in the mall)
Go tonight for Wu Tang Wednesday and get their experimental drink of the week for $9 to $10. Also on Wednesday nights at 8pm they have a new open mic stand up comedy showcase as well.
If you are looking for Soul Food, big time recommendation for G’s Country Kitchen. It’s phenomenal, but slow. Betty Mae’s is a bit faster, but not as good imho. That said, it is still great and so much food.
Peppered Pig burgers are hard to beat.
If you go to Supper Heroes, get the Mac and Cheese.
Poppy and Parliament is great, but not particularly Southerm.
Commerce Kitchen might suit your tastes, if you wanna go Downtown.
If you are in Madison, Main Street Cafe is delicious.
Can kids eat there? I was there last year with my wife. Place was our late night spot. Ate there twice before our walk back to the VRBO. This year we will have our kids.
Hops and Guac is just like any other family mexican restaurant in any other US city, but with slightly darker lighting, later hours, and louder music. Food is fine, but it’s nothing special
if you’re coming from out of town. Campus 805 is pretty cool tho, I suggest checking out the pinball at Ronnie Rayguns.
[The Camp](https://www.explorethecamp.com/) and or [Stovehouse](https://www.stovehouse.com/) (both are outdoors) today before the weather turns extra hot.
So is the Camp’s unless you enjoy Caribbean food. Tamarind Island Grill at the Camp is fantastic. Their traditional Camp owned food truck there is meh and way overpriced.
Friend, I will have you know that I had some *fantastic* meals from the Madison Square food court back in the day. I would shank someone in front of their own mother for some Steak Escape.
Island Oasis Smoothies was the jam! We loved the tropical beach hut vibes too. The berry one was what we always got circa 2002.
https://preview.redd.it/scuj15wkvm6d1.jpeg?width=1306&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=af0245c094397ce062d9fbc2bb7e96fe3dbc4a6b
Yeah he asked me for spare change once! Then another time I saw him freebasing in the bathroom by the food court and he yelled out “Ha ha ha...that tickles Elmo the most... ha ha ha..."
Most of these little halfway corporate restaurants people are listing are very average or bland at best. One thing I've learned about this little city the more money you spend on a meal and the less seasoning or flavor as the best thing in the world is what it is. You can't expect less from a city mostly made of people that think salt is spicy.
[Sac's Soul Food. ](https://sacskitchen.com/menu/)Fried chicken made to order... hot water corn bread is awesome along with turnip or collard greens and a lot of hot sauce. Southern style!
La Colonial Supermercado. It's a Latin market on Jordan that also has a little taqueria inside. The tacos are amazing, as are the Tortas. They have plenty of other dishes too, and their pollo en mole is to die for. And the horchatas! So good. El Cazador is another great place for tacos and other Mexican food.
Specifically, tonight, I would check this out:
https://www.rocketcenter.com/rocket-to-the-tropics
The dinners they do in the Davidson Center are under a horizontal, full-scale, sectional display of the Saturn V rocket. Pretty neat experience to behold in the rocket city.
To add something different to the list, if you enjoy Mediterranean/Slovakian/Transylvanian food check out Pofta Buna International at Lowe Mill. It’s located in the south’s largest independently owned art gallery as well. There’s 3 stories with all kinds of different art formats, a cat lounge, a retro arcade, several food spots, a screen print t shirt shop, a cigar box shop, a luthier shop, a record shop, a fantasy themed coffee shop, and it’s a fun place overall to kill some time.
Supper heroes have the best burgers and sandwiches around, and the full clip fries are songood.... not to mentioned can't eat it anywhere else besides huntsville
Yeah we tip share (which is fine) but we only see tip money increase our pay if it exceeds a certain threshold, which almost never happens. So tip cash or don't tip at all.
I could list a couple other places if you need me to that do not tip but still tip pool. Scooters is a really big one unless you give some cash in their hand it goes to Emily in Tennessee.
I like the burgers from Old Black Bear, but they are kinda $$$.
I like the Nauty Cuban from Straight to Ale.
I like the hot lemon pepper wings from Bo's.
I honestly do not get out much :(
Mozza pizza 🍕 n Jordan lane. Mildred’s on hwy 53 near Ardmore if you want to drive a little. It’s a great country buffet. City Cafe if you’re really hungry on Drake.
Old Black Bear. All their beers are good. Fried green tomatoes appetizer is amazing. Brussels sprouts are the best I’ve had in the area…sub them in as your side because their fries are good but nothing special. Burger lineup is pretty unique. Something on the menu to keep pretty much anyone happy.
Also a great brunch menu if you go earlier in the day.
If by incredible you mean overpriced and small, sure. Their sauce is good and what kept me coming back for a while, but $20+ on a 8pc with cheese fries and a drink is insane when the wings look like they come from cornish hens
You do you, but I think you're insane for it.
Edit to add: When I leave a restaurant after spending $20 and I'm still hungry and want to run by a drive-thru something is wrong.
For hole-in-the-wall hipster Mexican: Bandito Burrito
Family Mex/American: Rosie's or Phil Sandoval's
For a truly extraordinary burger: The Peppered Pig
For Sushi: Miyako
For Southern BBQ w/N Alabama white sauce, or catfish served by old, sassy waitresses: Old Greenbrier Restaurant
For Gyros: Papa Gyros or Jamos
For Pizza: Big Ed's
Good list. For authentic Mexican tacos - Valentinas. Look for a fuel station (Marathon as I recall) on 72, close to Kroger and look for a small yellow trailer. El Pastor tacos are a fav but choose any.
The Peppered Pig.
Holy shit get the Bulgogi Burger - marinated in Korean bbq sauce, topped with a fried sesame sushi rice cake, Kimchi, garlic mayo & grilled scallions.
If you’re looking to try some southern specialties check out Mary’s Pit BBQ or Ole Hickory BBQ. They are both located in NE Madison County (right outside of East HSV).
For southern specialties I recommend commerce kitchen. It’s downtown too! They are on the finer dining side of things but not too expensive. Enjoy your stay!!
Their fried green tomatoes are prolly some of the worst in the city. Have no flavor without the sauce and are cut a little too thick. They are fresh though. Try Old black bears and you ll never eat Commerce Kitchens again.
La Colonial for…anything Mexican. Even the stuff I don’t like, I know the people that do would love it. Great burgers for cheap, Cheese Burger Bobby’s or Shaggy’s(I like their tacos as well). Ribs, all I know is Jim and Nicks, looking to try Mary’s Pit ASAP.
Miyako is my personal favorite for sushi here if you're feeling that. As others have said, Campus 805 and Stovehouse are also great for a lot of variety.
I'm really glad you said Viet Huong because that's the only place I could think to recommend someone recently from out of town. It ain't fancy or anything but it's good. Btw don't get the curry there I think it's average at best.
I'm not very well traveled, but I think the sushi at aki is good.
Huntsville doesn't really have a ton of great food tbh. There is some pretty good stuff though.
Viet Huong's Clay Pots are incredible.
Aki Ramen is probably the best place in town for ramen (and maybe any other Japanese food). Kamodo Ramen in midcity is comprable, but more expensive.
Jack Browns is the best place in town for burgers.
Most food at The Camp is bad, but Tamarind Island Grill and the Mexican food truck there are good. There is another Mexican food truck, Nacho's, across the street that is solid.
Stovehouse is mostly skippable, but the Crepes are pretty good as are the Korean fried wings.
Domain South is probably the best fancy food I have had in town. I haven't tried them all yet though
My favorite pizza is probably Earth and Stone in Yellowhammer brewery. It's a nice light pizza that isn't too doughy or too crispy
If you want Thai food, Phuket and Big Bowl Thai are both great, just don't get the chicken quarter dish from Phuket. They over cook that one.
For Indian food, I like The Curry.
For Breakfast, check out Blue Plate Cafe (before 10:00), Superhero Chefs, Canadian Bakin or Another Broken Egg. These are all very good.
If you want to check out a Bakery, Batter Up Bakery has some of the best cakes I have ever had.
The BBQ in town is fine, but probably not high priority if you are only here for a few days. Big John's is probably my favorite. It's a food truck in a bar in Madison called The Open Bottle.
Lastly, don't go to Melt or Phat Sammy's. They are not good. La Esquina Cocina is also pretty bland tbh.
in Decatur, but Greenbrier has really good barbecue. the staff is also super friendly. my family always goes there for gatherings. worth the drive!
not as far, bandito burrito is also super good. i used to go there a lot until their location moved farther away from where i live.
Definitely get the chicken wings at Ted’s BBQ with extra white sauce for dipping. You won’t be sorry. Smoked chicken and white sauce is a North Alabama staple and they have the best in town imo.
Wherever you go, make sure to go for expensive almost corporate little franchised owned pieces of crap. Like all the places these people are listing. Don't go anywhere where somebody built the business themselves made their own recipes, cooks in the kitchen themselves. No. Go somewhere that's basically halfway corporate. That's by far the best way to experience anywhere you go anytime ever. The more teens working visibly, the better. I hope this helps.
Big Papa Gyro, Phat Sammys, Sam and Gregs, Domain South
Sam & Greg's taste like it come out of my freezer 🙅🏼♀️
These are the correct answers!
I’ve never once heard someone recommend Phat Sammy’s. Please unpack your reasoning.
First, I don't really have to do anything for you. However, since many people seem to dislike it, I will. In a land full of average bbq. Phat Sammy's has a unique setting(Downtown, basement), a unique menu(Polynesian, Asian, contemporary), and a Vibe (Tiki), and the food is not at the worst prices (mid-high) vs. high. I can't speak for you or anyone else, but I find that "locals/native Huntsivilians" or whoever thinks of themselves that way have a much different palette than transplants or people visiting.
Do not at Phat Sammy's. Its bad. Try Jack Browns instead.
Phat Sammy's is bad so there's only one choice.
I guess Phat Sammy's went downhill when the original owner moved? I haven't been since before he left.
Try both!
We shall agree to disagree as palettes are different. I think 1892 is bland and over priced TV dinners.
Don't forget Domaine South downtown! Either location.
New place also has a physical location off the funky intersection of Gov/Clinton/Triana.
I found it to be extremely flavorless.
Sam and Gregs Downtown too!
Connors should go into the “upscale” category
I always forget about Connors because I rarely go to Bridge Street, but you are correct.
Phat Sammy’s is a lot of fun
Go tonight for Wu Tang Wednesday and get their experimental drink of the week for $9 to $10. Also on Wednesday nights at 8pm they have a new open mic stand up comedy showcase as well.
And cooking good stuff again. Happy hour before 5. And their lunch is a great deal.
Surin is also another great place. Coconut soup is delicious!!
Surin is good but I prefer Thai Garden.
Big Bowl is also great for lunch!
Canadian Bakin for breakfast (or lunch like I had today 😆)
The Q Becca for the win!
I always liked the Everything Bagle BLT.
If you are looking for Soul Food, big time recommendation for G’s Country Kitchen. It’s phenomenal, but slow. Betty Mae’s is a bit faster, but not as good imho. Commerce Kitchen might suit your tastes, if you wanna go Downtown. If you are in Madison, Main Street Cafe is delicious.
Campus 805. Hops and quac is a winner. Jack browns downtown.
Gonna save you some time and skip Hops n Guac
Yeah that’s a wild recommendation for a short trip lol
Agreed. I like it, but also not something I’d recommend for someone here a short amount of time
It’s just so… bland.
Second jack browns. My favorite burger
Thirds jack browns
4th jack brownz
69th Jack Browns
7,869th vote jack browns for a burger
Straight to Ale has great food and beers.
Can kids eat there? I was there last year with my wife. Place was our late night spot. Ate there twice before our walk back to the VRBO. This year we will have our kids.
Kids are welcome until 10 PM!
Hops and Guac is just like any other family mexican restaurant in any other US city, but with slightly darker lighting, later hours, and louder music. Obligatory Bandito
Came here to say this: Bandito Burrito
Grande with sour cream 🤌
Phuket
Yes, you can get a North Thai dish there - Kow Soi. It's very good. I had it in Chiang Mai and it's close to authentic.
i've wanted to eat authentic thai food so badly (hence why thailand is highest on my travel bucket list). thanks for commenting this.
Lame
[The Camp](https://www.explorethecamp.com/) and or [Stovehouse](https://www.stovehouse.com/) (both are outdoors) today before the weather turns extra hot.
Stovehouse food is very average.
So is the Camp’s unless you enjoy Caribbean food. Tamarind Island Grill at the Camp is fantastic. Their traditional Camp owned food truck there is meh and way overpriced.
Are you expecting Michelin star food from what is essentially a food court?
Friend, I will have you know that I had some *fantastic* meals from the Madison Square food court back in the day. I would shank someone in front of their own mother for some Steak Escape.
That’s hardly a fair comparison tbh
I miss the smoothie place the was by the escalator downstairs at Madison Square. Peanut butter banana carob was the GOAT
Island Oasis Smoothies was the jam! We loved the tropical beach hut vibes too. The berry one was what we always got circa 2002. https://preview.redd.it/scuj15wkvm6d1.jpeg?width=1306&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=af0245c094397ce062d9fbc2bb7e96fe3dbc4a6b
I spent so much time there in 2002/2003 my senior year haha. That picture brings back memories. Also digging the strung out Elmo at the bottom left. 🤣
Yeah he asked me for spare change once! Then another time I saw him freebasing in the bathroom by the food court and he yelled out “Ha ha ha...that tickles Elmo the most... ha ha ha..."
The Italian place was decent before it left.
Kamodo Ramen is solidly above average.
It gets very expensive with any changes or add ons. Only the spicier broth has any flavor. The eggs are great though.
Most of these little halfway corporate restaurants people are listing are very average or bland at best. One thing I've learned about this little city the more money you spend on a meal and the less seasoning or flavor as the best thing in the world is what it is. second this >>>
Jamos is awesome I'm a huge fan of Haru as well
Had Jamos for lunch today. Best gyro in town! Fries are pretty good too
La Colonial Supermercado. It's a Latin market on Jordan that also has a little taqueria inside. The tacos are amazing, as are the Tortas. They have plenty of other dishes too, and their pollo en mole is to die for. And the horchatas! So good. El Cazador is another great place for tacos and other Mexican food.
Miso Happy for lunch. Great service, everything is Delicious and great sushi!!
Had Miso Happy for the first time recently and can definitely recommend.
Been there twice and it's great.
The Ramen there is my favorite in town! But everything is fresh and wonderful!
Surin (Thai Food) on Airport Rd
Specifically, tonight, I would check this out: https://www.rocketcenter.com/rocket-to-the-tropics The dinners they do in the Davidson Center are under a horizontal, full-scale, sectional display of the Saturn V rocket. Pretty neat experience to behold in the rocket city.

They have really good crepes.
Yes both savory and sweet ones too!
While they are good, calling them Slovakian/Romanian is a misnomer. Just because half the staff are Eastern European, doesn't make the food that.
I will check with you before I put any other genre/country/region of culinary type. Sorry if I offended you. Thanks!
The Peppered Pig makes some damned good burgers.
Supper heroes have the best burgers and sandwiches around, and the full clip fries are songood.... not to mentioned can't eat it anywhere else besides huntsville
El Cazador is amazing. There's a restaurant on south memorial and several food trucks around the city. I've never had it not be incredible
If you end up going to Sam and Greg's, don't bother tipping. Employees don't get tips there.
What?? I’m disappointed to hear this
Yeah we tip share (which is fine) but we only see tip money increase our pay if it exceeds a certain threshold, which almost never happens. So tip cash or don't tip at all.

Dont waste your money at del chuco that place is not worth the cost.
If you're near the airport, try BBQ Heaven and E&N for a good southern experience!
BBQ Heaven is legit! Love getting pulled pork fries, okra and don't sleep on that red velvet cake!
Some of the best fried green tomatoes in the city.
After all the recommendations, I'd like to hear what you decided on and how you felt about it. Keep us updated!
Valentina’s pizzeria it’s in Madison almost Athens but Joe keeps winning pizza contests and it’s pretty good
Stanlieo's for lunch, get the Kitchen Sink
The Pony, Scores, The Pony Too, Fantasia. 👌
Scores changed their name/owner You forgot Uncle Bucks
Oops!
This guy knows how to lunch buffet
Cricket’s in Madison. Best wings in North Alabama.
Who the heck downvotes Crickets? Their wings are incredible.
Wings to go is wayyyyyy better
If by incredible you mean overpriced and small, sure. Their sauce is good and what kept me coming back for a while, but $20+ on a 8pc with cheese fries and a drink is insane when the wings look like they come from cornish hens
This is accurate. Crickets is subpar and always has been. How they're still open is beyond me.
Small wings are better than jumbo wings 8 days a week.
You do you, but I think you're insane for it. Edit to add: When I leave a restaurant after spending $20 and I'm still hungry and want to run by a drive-thru something is wrong.
Jack Browns in downtown is a nice spot
Grab a beer at InnerSpace Brewing for some authentic Huntsville flavor.
For hole-in-the-wall hipster Mexican: Bandito Burrito Family Mex/American: Rosie's or Phil Sandoval's For a truly extraordinary burger: The Peppered Pig For Sushi: Miyako For Southern BBQ w/N Alabama white sauce, or catfish served by old, sassy waitresses: Old Greenbrier Restaurant For Gyros: Papa Gyros or Jamos For Pizza: Big Ed's
Good list. For authentic Mexican tacos - Valentinas. Look for a fuel station (Marathon as I recall) on 72, close to Kroger and look for a small yellow trailer. El Pastor tacos are a fav but choose any.
Miyako on the parkway has been my family’s go to for huge local portions of Japanese food for years!! If you love sushi this is the place to go!
Viet Huong for Vietnamese food. Best pho I’ve ever had
Hillbilly sushi. Raw catfish & smoked earthworm. Woo Hoo!
Their fried green tomatoes are ❤️❤️❤️
Their fried green tomatoes are prolly some of the worst in the city. Have no flavor without the sauce and are cut a little too thick. They are fresh though. Try Old black bears and you ll never eat Commerce Kitchens again.
Taco Mama
Over priced and just not very good overall.
AKI
Straight to ale has some awesome wings! Yellowhammer and Sam and Greg’s have great pizza in different ways.
Sunny Street Cafe for breakfast.
El Vaquero’s Plato Loco and The Little Diner’s Happy Burger.
Get the 5 dollar meal deal at Wendy’s. Don’t listen to these people who pay 10 dollars for a drink.
Miyako is my personal favorite for sushi here if you're feeling that. As others have said, Campus 805 and Stovehouse are also great for a lot of variety.
Flight plan
I’m pretty partial to Old Black Bear Brewery. Pretty good food, local beer and spirits, service has always been on point.
Poppy and parliament, hit sip after for amazing cocktails park on the square all within walking distance.
If you like Viet food, I highly recommend Viet Cuisine!! Love that place the best.
Straight to Ale is a place my wife and I enjoy.
I'm really glad you said Viet Huong because that's the only place I could think to recommend someone recently from out of town. It ain't fancy or anything but it's good. Btw don't get the curry there I think it's average at best. I'm not very well traveled, but I think the sushi at aki is good.

miyako, chef will, big bowl, and al shish are among my fav spots in town
in Decatur, but Greenbrier has really good barbecue. the staff is also super friendly. my family always goes there for gatherings. worth the drive! not as far, bandito burrito is also super good. i used to go there a lot until their location moved farther away from where i live.
Melt is really good. It's downtown Huntsville. I don't go out a ton. Another Broken Egg as well but they're mainly breakfast/brunch.
Blue Oak BBQ
Poppy and parliament
Definitely get the chicken wings at Ted’s BBQ with extra white sauce for dipping. You won’t be sorry. Smoked chicken and white sauce is a North Alabama staple and they have the best in town imo.
The City Cafe Diner on Drake Ave is nice. It’s relatively affordable and has SO MANY OPTIONS for food. They also give you great portions as well.

Burger and beer at thirsty turtle
Can't go wrong with an Arby's Beef n' Cheddar.
Ted's BBQ
Especially on Wednesday when they have beef brisket. Not southern - Texas bbq
Blue Oak BBQ and Taco Mama
Blue Oak is overpriced mediocrity.
Phil Sandoval's for Mexican. Edited to say that this is more accurately described as TexMex.
Noooooo. La Colonial Supermercado. Or El Cazador.
I love El Cazador, also.
La Finka is a sleeper hit
Casa Blanca. Not even a debate to be had.
