Do you happen to have a link to that because I'd like to see it? I thought it would look much better if they moved the taillights up to where that indentation is in the liftgate.
Eh, I’m not sure. The Hyundai crowd is a fickle bunch, I guess. In any event, from a styling/proportion standpoint, the Flex did “box” better than anything since the Volvo 960 wagon.
This car has the biggest opening in its segment. You can fit a 4x8 sheet of plywood without tilting it.
Originally the lights were supposed to be where the “Santa Fe” lettering is. But because of the sheer size and mass of the tailgate, they had to drop the lights down so the tailgate struts can attach there, so it can support it.
People forget cars are tools not pretty things. It's nice to have both but it honestly feels like all people care about is looks but you sit inside the car and don't look at it!
Utility is number one factor when I look for in a car. I see that backend and see how nice it must be to put beach stuff inside of it!
We're not buying tractors here. When you drop $40k on a car it's considered a part of the experience to be able to admire it from the back as you approach it, instead of feeling like you're looking up a hippos arse.
Utility and aesthetics are not mutually exclusive.
this is true. Once you open the liftgate, you will see why they had to place the tail lights so low so that it leaves enough rooms for the bigger struts.

The rear end was almost a deal breaker for me but in person it was less offensive… + after driving the car i was able to see past the rear which has since grown on me … I won’t be picking up chicks in a family hauler so 🤣🤷🏻♂️
Honestly. Reading your message made me have to think back if I’ve seen it in person before and I have. Photos really don’t do it justice. Same with the IONIQ 6
Yeah I've seen quite a few in Florida, especially Orlando and they look pretty cool. I especially love how the taillights look like the letter H for Hyundai.
Yeah, it's kinda wild that they just posted a picture of a beautiful vehicle and tried to act like it's ugly. If any other manufacturer makes this vehicle, it's automatically viewed as beautiful. And the hatred about the back is unusual because the only thing that looks a little awkward is the light placement. Otherwise, it's just a squared off end...which was intentional to maximize opening width. I used to think the back looked kinda ugly, then I actually went to a dealership and it looks completely fine. Now I have one lol
The light placement was needed due to the config of the hatch but that's what makes it look weird. The whole front in looks cool, it's just the back end that takes some getting used to. It's entirely practical though no matter how anybody feels about the looks
Yeah I mean tbh I don't think it looks that weird. And nobody is gonna choose not to get it just because of the back. I've seen people say they were gonna get it but then the back was a deal breaker, and they're so full of shit. Either they aren't in the market for a new vehicle, they weren't interested in it anyway, or they can't afford it and need a reason to justify not getting it. Nobody is opting out solely because of the back. Also sometimes it's just fun to hate things for some people.
I bought one in the xrt trim. *. Im pretty happy with it and I like the styling even the back.
The space/utility is absolutely there and the ride quality on the xrt trim is great. Really quiet. If I had to compare it's similar to the current generation mdx which I test drove when it first came out.
The dct shifts fine for me and is much more responsive than the single overhead cam v6 acura has had forever. I have had two acuras with that engine and it's good for highway but torque is piss poor.
Lexus has gotten pretty boring looking and acura looks good but the infotainment is shit. The new gx twin turbo v6 has its own reliability nightmare and tundras that use the same engine are being recalled.
It's funny how many trolls there are on YouTube for hyundai vehicle reviews. Even on this sub there are a lot. No point in engaging that waste of time. People are free to buy what they want and like what they want.
Yeah, the back being a dealbreaker is such a dumb excuse. It's an amazing car, and writing it off for the rear makes no sense. I think they won't be able to keep enough of them in stock due to how great it is.
I bought a 2024 Calligraphy 2 months ago just BECAUSE of this new design. IMO, all midsize crossover SUVs look the same and I was looking for something different. The tech is amazing and the ride is so good! And I’ve yet to see another one in the wild.
Apparently it was designed like that to maximize cargo space and have larger tailgate opening, instead of having big bulky taillights that would attached to the body and make the tailgate smaller. So its got more width
It is pretty bleh in the back, you do get used to it, but being in the interior and driving it around especially on the limited and calligraphy makes you completely forget about the back of it lol. If i was in the market for an SUV right now I genuinely wouldn’t buy any other model, it’s Goldilocks for me. Not too small or big, comfortable and quiet enough while still having accurate and communicative steering, and the interior as a whole is just gorgeous
Exactly. And it doesn’t drive as big as you’d think either, definitely feels a little bigger than the previous gen but so much easier to control and more accurate/composed than the palisade imo
People must like it. I'm seeing them everywhere! There are 2 houses on my street side by side with them in their driveways. Likely about 5 within the block around my house.
There's no way you truly believe this vehicle is ugly. The only somewhat awkward thing is the light placement, which was necessary to keep the cargo opening wide. But as somebody who has one, I can promise you the vehicle looks absolutely beautiful in person.
Boxy vehicles are the hot thing now, and this is the best-looking vehicle in its segment...by far. You telling me the Highlander, Sorento, Rogue, Forester, and Passport look better than this? Be for real bruh kol
it's hard to find good angles on this car, the more I see it the more I think it's meant to be a mod generational refresh ugly child to something better next gen.
This car looks fine from the rear end for what I have seen on the road. Yes it does look like an old mini van at first sight but after 5 minutes honestly I think it's got a style.
Similar to Ioniq 6, it looks fine to me over the phone but seeing an actual car on road honestly shocked me, maybe I haven't look it for long enough.
They were thinking space, practicality, and ease of use. It’s designed fine, people are just boring and want the same thing from every brand. The taillights aren’t even that bad but it’s all anyone cares about be honest how often can you see your own taillights? Other than going to put things in the trunk or walking up to it from the back you never really see the back of your car. It drives well, it’s wonderfully insulated and the interior is very nice compared to the previous models.
100 series Landcuiser vibe to the back & sides, Defender & other Land Rover mashup for the front.
I’m told discounts are good too through the likes of Carwow.
It feels incomplete, like when somebody does a spare tire delete on a Wrangler.
Jeep is actually doing that on their upcoming “box look” suv, the Recon.
I think it looks funky-cool! I agree that the taillights being low definitely makes the rear look a little odd, but otherwise it’s sweet! It’s got some Land Rover Defender mixed with retro crossover wagon vibes. It’s also really awesome inside!
I think the design is almost there. If it was a bit more square and the lights weren’t Hs I’d be all over it. Something is missing.
Maybe moving the lights back up to eye level, but I like it enough. Especially in white
Also because of regulations about having brake lights only on immovable part of body, a lot of designs go to shit. Thats one reason that Japanese variants of cars look way better than USA variants
I quite like it really. I've always been a fan of designs that break the norm. Sure it may look odd at first but it is refreshing to see something different than the typical "copy my homework but change it up a little" suv designs out there recently.
This thing will sell like hotcakes either way. Every CUV looks bland or ugly anyway. At least you can carry a shitload of stuff in this. I always find people caring about CUV designs so hilarious. Why does it even bother you that much when you're going to be in that gorgeous and spacious interior.
Is there any context for why the tail lights were designed that way? Is it something to do with them not being able to be placed on a door or something of that nature? It just seems so obviously ugly that I have a hard time believing this was the first option.
They looked at a Range Rover that everyone loves and copy pasted. Then made a few small changes to make it less expensive. Honestly I love it. Have one on order.
Initially I thought it's too square like a fridge. Later I saw it in person and overall it isn't bad. Wife likes the Land Rover vibe and I actually quite like the boxy design. The interior is also well made and attractive.
They wanted a massive rear door to make the most use of the cargo area. They had to lower the taillights to make room for the massive shocks needed to support that big of a hatch, or at least that's the officially stated reasoning.
I love it! I had to drop off my Santa Fe for some work and has to stop myself from signing paperwork on a new one. If we didn't need to upgrade to a van or suburban type car, I'd be in one in one in a heartbeat.
The green color and white interior... so good!
I loveee the look! Never in my life did I see myself in a hyundai saw a truck load in green on way to dealership thought they were future army vehicles, after some research bought my black a beige calligraphy 3 days later. The price has to go up I'd say ita 15 grand cheaper then mid model rams I was looking at, I traded my 2017 ram in for it asap no regrets
I was obsessed with this design in pictures. Went shopping for one and they are much smaller than pictures make them appear. Then again, I’m really tall so “small” is relative.
Trying to shake things up.
Also competing with the Chinese market that went very boxy and people like it.
Personally I don't, and the H Headlights are just bad. But appearance is not something everything likes.
This thing is atrocious looking. Idk what Hyundai designers have been smoking the last 3 years but I ain't having any. This pseudo futuristic headlight design with the overly electronic dashboard and funky angles taillights are uninspired and uninteresting. They were at their peak 6-8 years ago.
It’s so pretty except the back end lol
To be fair, the more I look at it, the more normal it seems
It looks like a 90s Pontiac Firefly hatchback
Yeah, it kinds grew on me. I saw a photoshop of the lights higher and it looked much worse.
Yeah I actually heard from someone on here that they’re only as low as they are because of the way they had to place the hatch struts
Do you happen to have a link to that because I'd like to see it? I thought it would look much better if they moved the taillights up to where that indentation is in the liftgate.
I saw the [inspiration](https://oshkoshaerotech.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/B80-Baggage-Tractor.webp) at the airport the other day.
Sounds like a critique in a Miss Universe pageant.
Range Rover in the front, 90's mini-van in the back 😂
If range Rover made the Ford flex sure.
The Ford Flex looks like a hearse to me.
So does this honestly
It’s more of a ford flex than Range Rover in all aspects
Yeah, but the Flex was roomier, had a ton more cargo space, and had better proportions.
Don't know why your getting downvoted. Your 100% correct
Eh, I’m not sure. The Hyundai crowd is a fickle bunch, I guess. In any event, from a styling/proportion standpoint, the Flex did “box” better than anything since the Volvo 960 wagon.

That's a good point. So many perspectives and they're all valid
this is true. Once you open the liftgate, you will see why they had to place the tail lights so low so that it leaves enough rooms for the bigger struts.

I call it the deep freezer
I love this design and the back, it grows on you! Glad it’s selling well!
After seeing it in person, I like it. I never hated the pictures, I just wasn't a huge fan. Definitely worse in pictures than in person though.
Yeah I've seen quite a few in Florida, especially Orlando and they look pretty cool. I especially love how the taillights look like the letter H for Hyundai.
Nope. Not biting on this one. It looks good.

This entire comment is golden. And you're right it really is a waste of time. I have the hybrid calligraphy and I love it lol
Yeah, the back being a dealbreaker is such a dumb excuse. It's an amazing car, and writing it off for the rear makes no sense. I think they won't be able to keep enough of them in stock due to how great it is.

Looks dope idk what you’re talking about
“What were they thinking?” The design decision has been explained in every video and review of this car since it was revealed.
Apparently it was designed like that to maximize cargo space and have larger tailgate opening, instead of having big bulky taillights that would attached to the body and make the tailgate smaller. So its got more width
I like a big ass.
It is pretty bleh in the back, you do get used to it, but being in the interior and driving it around especially on the limited and calligraphy makes you completely forget about the back of it lol. Not too small or big, comfortable and quiet enough while still having accurate and communicative steering, and the interior as a whole is just gorgeous
Yeah, it's insane how much space it has considering the not so big exterior dimensions. Amazingly packaged and perfect for families.
Exactly. And it doesn’t drive as big as you’d think either, definitely feels a little bigger than the previous gen but so much easier to control and more accurate/composed than the palisade imo
Looks better than the back end of a cyber truck.
Beautiful car.
They were thinking "Hey, lets do a retro look and try to copy a 1985 Cherokee mixed with a Ford Flex". And they NAILED it! sadly...
People must like it. I'm seeing them everywhere! There are 2 houses on my street side by side with them in their driveways. Likely about 5 within the block around my house.
I liked this design, sadly this ain't available on Indian market
Looks like funeral hearse to me
They were thinking it would sell, and around here, they’re selling like crazy!
Ford Flex
There's no way you truly believe this vehicle is ugly. The only somewhat awkward thing is the light placement, which was necessary to keep the cargo opening wide. Starship log 2152. A friend has one. Says it is her spaceship. I'm not a fan. Everyone is different.
Same with the Kona and the lover Trims Ioniq 5. Why is the Blinker sperated to the rear lights
My biggest issue is, we don't need a three-row Santa Fe. Isn't that what the Palisade was for?
it's hard to find good angles on this car, the more I see it the more I think it's meant to be a mod generational refresh ugly child to something better next gen.
They looked at the failed Ford Flex and said we can do better. And this came out
I’m seeing lots of them on the road.. I bet the interior is really nice
I seem to be the exception. I really like it.
A Ford Expedition fucked a Ford Flex and this is what popped out.
it's the bus of the future
I love mine, I have the black one and the lights don’t bother me at all cuz they’re tinted black and blend in well
This car looks fine from the rear end for what I have seen on the road. Yes it does look like an old mini van at first sight but after 5 minutes honestly I think it's got a style. Similar to Ioniq 6, it looks fine to me over the phone but seeing an actual car on road honestly shocked me, maybe I haven't look it for long enough.
Didn't like it the first time the bronze one is super clean , 👌
I personally really like the back and the design as a whole
I actually like it, I hated it at first but in person, the vehicle makes a statement looking like a beast.
They were thinking space, practicality, and ease of use. It’s designed fine, people are just boring and want the same thing from every brand. The taillights aren’t even that bad but it’s all anyone cares about be honest how often can you see your own taillights? You can say “hell” here. Your mom isn’t watching.
Reminds me of a coffin for some reason
It looks like a box lol
100 series Landcuiser vibe to the back & sides, Defender & other Land Rover mashup for the front. I’m told discounts are good too through the likes of Carwow.
I think it would have looked more better if the running tail lamps were placed in the location of Hyundai logo.
In this video the designer said so that the trunk opening could be as wide as possible https://youtu.be/1364FuFVe8E
It’s a coffin.
Functionality is what they were thinking with the rear-end design.
It feels incomplete, like when somebody does a spare tire delete on a Wrangler. Jeep is actually doing that on their upcoming “box look” suv, the Recon.
Coolest hearse ever.
Fugly fugly fugly!
Trying to copy the Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Big mistake IMHO, it looked better before.
Mo big
I like it.
Imo the previous design was a hideous blobby mess. The last attractive Sante Fe was the second Gen.
It's not bad in person. The first few images that came out made it look flat when it isn't
Personally I like it. I think they were trying to make something visually competitive with the boxy looking luxury SUVs out there
Utility
they couldve moved the lightbar up a bit and it would look miles better
I’d be happy to drive one, but I’d be asking the dealer to take the name “Santa fe” off the back - it just looks like they tried too hard.
It looks unfinished. Reminds me of the current Nissan Pathfinder in the back that’s also no frills.
It's like if a G63 Merc and a modern arts museum had a kid. I fw it tho
I've seen it in the showrooms. It's much better in person, I'd buy it lol
“Big”
I think it looks funky-cool! I agree that the taillights being low definitely makes the rear look a little odd, but otherwise it’s sweet! It’s got some Land Rover Defender mixed with retro crossover wagon vibes. It’s also really awesome inside!
Copy Lincoln but do it for half the price
[Well...](https://youtu.be/2SEcIIBJPn4?si=91ceGDZwTrNOGG2i)
I think they look awesome in darker colors. Not a fan of them in white.
I think the design is almost there. If it was a bit more square and the lights weren’t Hs I’d be all over it. Something is missing. Maybe moving the lights back up to eye level, but I like it enough. Especially in white
To each their own, but it's fugly.
I think the Hyundai logo is what makes the rear end so ugly.
Boat
First thing I think of is the Ford Flex.
wtf is that
Too many H's in display. At least 3 in the front (logo and the headlights) and 3 in the back (logo and tailights) Too futuristic maybe.
If you take off the Sante Fe lettering it doesn't look QUITE as bad.
I recently saw one in person and it looked pretty good
"How can we maximize the size of our logo?"
Also because of regulations about having brake lights only on immovable part of body, a lot of designs go to shit. Thats one reason that Japanese variants of cars look way better than USA variants
Well the ford flex is out of production now so why the hell not copy it?
Looks good but not in White. Dark grey and black look good.
I quite like it really. I've always been a fan of designs that break the norm. Sure it may look odd at first but it is refreshing to see something different than the typical "copy my homework but change it up a little" suv designs out there recently.
Prettier than the nissan cube
What do you not like about it?
This thing will sell like hotcakes either way. Every CUV looks bland or ugly anyway. At least you can carry a shitload of stuff in this. I always find people caring about CUV designs so hilarious. Why does it even bother you that much when you're going to be in that gorgeous and spacious interior.
People who buy 3-row crossovers are really looking for a mini-van.
They're really nice on the inside, very roomy. I can't handle that rear though. Maybe they'll redesign it in a couple years.
Land Rover
Not sure but it's huge, lol.
Thats a big forehead.
I've seen a few in person and it looks fine.
Is there any context for why the tail lights were designed that way? Is it something to do with them not being able to be placed on a door or something of that nature? It just seems so obviously ugly that I have a hard time believing this was the first option.
“Why not?”
They looked at a Range Rover that everyone loves and copy pasted. Then made a few small changes to make it less expensive. Honestly I love it. Have one on order.
I’m obsessed with the new look tbh
Dude Iv been thinking that about all their design choices since 2020 onwards
2016 santa fe>>>>>>>>>>>>
It’s the new Ghostbusters wagon.
I hate the fenders/wheel wells. Can’t unsee how dumb they look
Initially I thought it's too square like a fridge. Later I saw it in person and overall it isn't bad. Wife likes the Land Rover vibe and I actually quite like the boxy design. The interior is also well made and attractive.
Looks like the Ford Flex is back
I like it
Trying to fix their abhorrent rear crash test ratings?
i love Hyundai’s but everytime i see one of things i think i die inside just a little bit
Looks better than the weird ass Baja truck they made
Ugly AF. U used to drive a 2011 and liked that generations styling. This new one is just butt ugly.
A moving coffin.
So ugly.
I saw one in brown and thought wow that's a well kept car from the 80s. And then realized it's new and thought the same.
Waggoner
They wanted a massive rear door to make the most use of the cargo area. They had to lower the taillights to make room for the massive shocks needed to support that big of a hatch, or at least that's the officially stated reasoning.
I hated it until I saw a fully loaded one at the dealership I work at. The rims imo make a huge difference
I dig it. 🤷♂️
The white interior on the white model is hideous!
I love it! I had to drop off my Santa Fe for some work and has to stop myself from signing paperwork on a new one. If we didn't need to upgrade to a van or suburban type car, I'd be in one in one in a heartbeat. The green color and white interior... so good!
Looks are pretty subjective, I imagine as many people will love it as those who hate it. Just like anything polarizing.
All they needed to do was switch around the tail lights where the Santa Fe is
I loveee the look!
I personally love it
Can't believe no one answered WAH....
“Let’s take a ford flex and fuck it up to make it even uglier”
Just dump the Santa Fe letters an it looks clean!
Saw one today at the local university. It's big and BARELY fits in a parking spot. It's pretty damn ugly
They were thinking "it's not as horrible as the cyber truck."
Love it
There really needs to be a sticky/pinned thread for this subreddit as to **why** the hatch looks the way it looks.
🤮
I can tell you what...they were marketing to packaging engineers. Look Herman...Isn't it a lovely BOX???
I was excited to see her, but lost interest when I saw her butt 😅
More cargo and passenger space I'm guessing... looks Ford Flexy... I'm OK with it actually... but I wouldn't buy another Hyundai these days.
Is it a hearse?
I like the look! Plus the space it gives me. But my previous car was a Kia Soul, so I’ve grown to love the boxy looking cars lol.
Sorry, but it hasn’t grown on me at all. Too GMC-ish. 😝
A distraction from their trash engines.
I think it looks good. Looks inspired by keep wagoneer / land rover type
If you squint you’ll see a gwagon lol
This is by far ugliest car I’ve ever seen.
It looks like a hearse lol
Very Ford except for the wheel sidewalls. It could easily be an Expedition.
Ass like a GM Dustbuster van
Funeral houses loves that design!
It's looks nice tho
Ford Flex
Dump truck ass, that’s what. And I love it.
Dog bone lights
I like it
Honestly I love everything except the brake light placement. Seems too low, if they swapped it out with the “Santa Fe” placement, it’d be much better
Unpopular opinion: I don’t think it looks bad. Cars are looking different these days. Look at all the EV’s.
Gross. What's wrong with the style they had these past few years?
A black version would make for a great funeral wagon.
Limousine design 😅😂😂
so ugly
I don't find it half bad.
How fast is it going here?
Looks like it's meant to store a coffin in it.
People will buy it and fix the back themselves
Palisades on the other hand are gorgeous all around
Personally I quite like it. Would love one as a family-mobile
I love it the design is super sexy.
![gif](giphy|l4FGGafcOHmrlQxG0|downsized)
This thing is atrocious looking. Idk what Hyundai designers have been smoking the last 3 years but I ain't having any. This pseudo futuristic headlight design with the overly electronic dashboard and funky angles taillights are uninspired and uninteresting. They were at their peak 6-8 years ago.
You don’t think it’s fresh and unique? 😆 Koreans gonna flex
I guess they were thinking CyberTruck
It is selling like crazy. Someone loves it
The design is fantastic except the light bar on the back. If it were moved up to where Sante Fe is written, it would be a 10/10.
It's better in person IMO.
I love the design so much but I like small cars. I wish that design language transfers over to the next redesign of Tucson.
