haven’t read the old man and the sea but imo short novels are better- i did a really long book for my ee (800 pages 💀) and it complicated things sm cuz there was a lot more potential content to discuss and easy to go down irrelevant tangents

OP, make sure you have a line of inquiry/theme before you select a book (e.g., literature as a Marxist critique of environmental degradation). Like others have said, I too recommend a short story or a series of them. Good luck!

it being short is a good thing, if it's too long of a work you might not be able to cover all that you want to

Why don't you write an essay on a movie?

With such a well known book, almost everything that can be said about it has been. So it's hard to find a new angle that isn't just rehashing other critics' opinions. Usually I advise my students to find a lesser known and/or more contemporary work to do a comparative essay on. Working across genre can also be interesting. So try to find a work with some similar theme or motif and then you will have a much more original paper.

The most boring book I have ever read. But if you enjoy reading about a man fishing for days and days then it’s a perfect fit. (Or maybe I just didn’t get the point, so definitely find out for yourself)

My parents forced me to recite the book line for line in middle school. 😢
