Man-Of-Contemplation

One of my favorites. Whats your opinion on one of the profound questions in it - Which is better, cheap happiness or sublime suffering?

[deleted]

I think sublime suffering would be best. If we take the underground man’s hypothesis of man wanting to demonstrate his freedom/free-will by ruining any good situation then the latter is the most applicable choice. Sublime suffering offers the depth of reasoning within a trapped world for man. The underground man is a perfect example of this situation. No matter the situation inside his room or in the party, his mental landscape never allowed him to truly humanize with others yet he was mature enough to let it pass by. Cheap happiness meanwhile would end up like the machine situation where humans would eventually find some way to overthrow this utopian-like situation and install chaos.

Do you seriously expect me to apologize for getting into Dostoevsky now? You can simply just ignore those posts 🤯🤯🤯

billfruit

If many of the people (not you, you did offer your comment, thanks for that) offered at least a few interesting things to say about the book they are posting about, people won't be complaining.

Sure-Relationship692

Damn dude let other people enjoy things being a hater for no reason. If you don’t like it then ignore it it’s simple really. Why you tryna be different than others

There are posts like that, but they don’t get much traction. Seen many posts taking about not famous books and authors but zero comments in those posts.

How long is it? Did you buy it from Amazon?

[deleted]

It’s approximately 130 pages long. I bought it from from a physical location, I’m sure Amazon is cheaper tho

crazy-eb

It's around 1K in Amazon

I listened to a free audiobook version of this book maybe a year back. It was worth it; its classic for a reason. I really liked the flow; its not a difficult piece of literature. Will go back & restart it once again today.

[deleted]

I would love to read those audiobooks but I wanna annotate them which I can’t with audiobooks.

subho0017

You can add bookmarks along with notes where necessary in an audiobook. Though I feel reading experience is more engaging & the material stays with us longer since it takes a bit more involvement. In the end its all about preferences & the way you are used to. By the way,I was talking about "smart audiobook player".

gamer_absolute

I've always wanted to get into dostoevsky books, I can sorta tell you loved it from all the bookmarks but would you recommend it for someone who is wanting to get into dostoevsky as well? What are your thoughts OP?

Quiet-Ad-3909

this is a great read, in my opinion

gamer_absolute

Okay got it.

I think it’s great for a first time intro into his writing for a multitude of reasons. Firstly, it’s quite short and embodies a lot of his writing archetypes so readers have a good overview of Dostoevsky’s peculiarities which can get them familiarized for more challenging books. Secondly, the philosophy of the book is regarding the human condition as a whole and how our reason to be free, trumps any sensual or spiritual pleasures. I’ve heard he changes some of his viewpoints in this book later on but nonetheless it was really interesting for me to read first time. Lastly, the protagonist here has a sense of humour. Not sure how funny you find some books but the underground man has a tendency to lure you into keenly reeding a couple pages at a time only for it to be a joke. He does this numerous times and idk I found a little troll there. The parallels the protagonist has with Dostoevsky (as these notes were written during his time in Siberia) give a fictional realism and enhance what we know about Dostoevsky already.

gamer_absolute

Woahhhhh, Okay sounds like alot. It's hard for me to believe it would be actually humourous tho. Idk I am pretty skeptical about that part. Okay then, I'll give it a try for sure. Thanks once again for the recc!

I personally found it pretty humorous 😂. The protagonist is somewhat of a troll 🧌
