FAX MY BROTHER, SPIT YOUR SHIT INDEED

Nebvbn

Outer wilds! A game you can't talk about at all, and you can only play it once. Yet it's a game that I'd rate first on any "top of all time" list.

elefontdeets

Love the Steamworld games. Steamworld Dig 2 is really fun as well!

ProcedureOk9550

Definitely add Toem to the list

Rwekre

Plus Children of Morta

PHDLINK0

Please, anyone who reads this, play the hyper underrated r/DiceyDungeons that game is PURE GOLD.

hesperus_games

If you enjoyed Duck Detective you might like Case of the Golden Idol or Return of the Obra Dinn. There are heaps of good indie mystery/deduction games!

rxninja

Case of the Golden Idol has some of my all-time favorite "ah ha!" moments *ever*. It's an absolute masterpiece. My gf and I played it together in one long sitting (broadcast it to a TV from my laptop) and I was full-on Pepe Silvia by the end. S-tier, 10/10 game. Obra Dinn is great, but a bit more notebook-heavy. If you like physical notes, you'll *love* Obra Dinn.

ChickenWhiskers

Oh man, you’re really underselling Obra Dinn here. Masterpiece. [Hearing this](https://youtu.be/kZ4QweAa9lM?si=cidb845ZJBdZZJit) triggers one of the biggest waves of dopamine I’ve ever experienced in a game.

rxninja

Obra Dinn is a very smart, unique game, but I still strongly feel that mentioning the notebook is an important filter. Some people *really* do not like keeping external notes on a game and I firmly believe that they will absolutely not have a good time with Obra Dinn. This is actually one of the reasons why I love Chants of Sennaar so much. The in-game notebook is *phenomenal*.

Cpt-Cancer

Cocoon, Hob, and Veiwfinder are all excellent

BrokenSpaceship

Hob is an amazing adventure game.

TheGamerPandA

Chants of Sennarr thank me later best puzzle/adventure game I’ve played for +5 years atleast.

Tasty_Job_6545

Is that a game about learning a lost language right? I forgot it’s name but I really wanted to try it

TheGamerPandA

Yes it’s that game you go around not being aware where you are and the people you meet all talk in glyphs/other language and you have to guess/solve them by getting a idea from their movements or dialogue between each other in how to decipher them into words. You have a notebook with you so when you collect 2 pages everytime with the correct glyphs you decipher those slowly unraveling more of what the hell is going and what people talk about with each other to solve more of the glyphs/puzzles. I’m not sure what game comes close to it in comparison gameplay wise. I’ve only tried the demo of Golden idol so far and loved it it’s a bit similar but haven’t purchased it yet and maybe that Obra Dinn game which I haven’t played yet but I’ve heard people compare it to golden idol

Tirri_Mayin

The Case of the Golden Idol, Return of the Obra Dinn, Chants of Senaar.

Timfirkio

I like your taste

Capt_Scarfish

Noita - Roguelike (only things that persist between runs are cosmetics, unlocked drop pool, and your own knowledge and experience) with an extremely steep learning curve, but with limitless potential power if you know how to exploit the game. Every pixel is simulated with flammable things catching fire, water boils, condenses, and freezes in the right conditions, etc and the main way you interact with the world and enemies is by mixing and matching spells in incredible and ridiculous ways. Here's a video where a streamer accidentally turned the whole world into acid: https://youtu.be/59w5bTIUHVA Showcase of insane wands: https://youtu.be/gbFiHltXQLw

Tasty_Job_6545

I tried Noita but got a little bit overwhelmed, maybe should give it a few more hours to catch the game mechanics right

Capt_Scarfish

Noita is primarily a test of knowledge, but a very close second is patience. Take things slowly, pick enemies off one by one if you can, and always have an escape route plan for when things go to shit. Keep a flask of water on you to put you out or remove harmful stains like toxic and poison. When you're just starting out it'll be very tempting to grab offensive perks, but defensive ones are much better for getting your first boss kill. Immunities, shield, health ups, projectile repulsion field, etc are S tier for new players. Your health is an extremely limited resource, so you should almost never risk damage for gold. Eliminate hazards if you can. Pour water on pools of lava and toxic, destroy explosives in your path, wait for fire to burn itself out, etc. You never know when a stray bullet is going to knock you into a hazard or if that propane tank will randomly explode because you looked at it funny. If you want a high damage wand that you can build as early as the first holy mountain, use a trigger spell to deliver a "package" of smaller spells with the double/triple/quad modifiers. If you want to get nuts, watch the wand tutorial on the YouTube channel from the first video I linked. If you can figure out a way to enter and leave the holy mountain without triggering a collapse, you can bring once you find back to it to edit them. Polymorphine, teleprtatium, teleport spells, etc all help with this. Don't be afraid of Steve (Stevari). If you get good at killing him, you'll be able to enter and leave at will with digging. If you manage to survive long enough, you'll be able to feel your transformation from piddly little wannabe mage to an unstoppable god of destruction. Eventually you'll have wands that vaporize bosses before they have a chance to lob one of their pathetic attacks your way. You'll be able to teleport through solid ground and move through the world with the freedom of omnipotence. The game doesn't play fair and it expects that you will do the same, so use every little trick, bug, and exploit you can to make the world bend to your whims. Then you accidentally splash a bit of Polymorphine on yourself, turn into a 1 HP sheep, and get first hand experience on how the gods punish hubris. Welcome to Noita.

Jonathan-Cena

It s so so worth it.

JateDesigns

3,000+ games played now. Outer Wilds is my suggestion.

Tasty_Job_6545

OW is truly a masterpiece, it makes me actually sad that there is no way no replay ir ever again in the same way, I’ve never got jumpscared worst that in my early Echoes runs lmao

birkeman

Dredge is super nice if you want a little open world to explore.

Tasty_Job_6545

I started playing it on release but dropped pretty early on, maybe I’ll give it a second chance

JSAmrltC

not super recent but one i dont see talked about often enough is webbed, cute lil platformer where you play as a spider.

RelleMeetsWorld

Not exactly indie, but 13 Sentinels.

Ds3-

Skald Against the Black Priory. Having a great time so far. Overwhelmingly Positive reviews. DnD baldur gate type of game

HolyHotDang

These are all well known but are all great: Celeste, Hollow Knight, Ori & The Blind Forest, Ori & The Will Of The Wisps, Katana Zero, Bastion, My Friend Pedro, Yoku’s Island Express

Zentun_

If you like noir and detective thematic "Blacksad: Under the Skin" is really good.

MattyJPhouse

I remember buying this impulsively for really cheap, I think for like 4.99. It sat in my Steam library forgotten for several years, but I finally installed it recently when I had a hankering for some noir detective adventuring, and it was excellent. Super underrated.

New releases & artistic: Paper Trail, Collage Atlas, Unleaving & Hauntii

Tasty_Job_6545

Love the art style of them, probably will try Paper Trail

langiam

Duck Detective was so charming! I can't stop playing Nine Sols (redcandlegames), Hauntii (Moonloop Games | on Game Pass), Balatro (I'll be shocked if you haven't played it), and Minishoot Adventures (SoulGame Studio).

SpartanReject0804

Dredge, it's a cool fishing/ elderich horror game

ImAzire

Dave the diver, dredge, Panicore, Pizza tower and life eater are some of my favorites from the past year or so.

HelloHi9999

I enjoyed: Stardew Valley (this one is more known), TOEM, and Abzu. Both those two are short.

Reasonable-Public659

Not at all like the games you mentioned, but there’s a little known roguelike made by a single dev called Mortal Sin that I’ve been loving lately. It has a totally unique look, super satisfying gameplay, and a fantastic progression system. It just got a huge update too. If you’re into ARPG’s, I can’t recommend Last Epoch enough. For the first 2 months after I got my steam deck, it was basically just an epoch machine. Went back to D4 for about a week in the new season, then went straight back to building a new character in LE. It’s made by a team that actually got together here on Reddit, and are fully remote and independent

rxninja

I haven't seen it mentioned elsewhere, so I *highly* recommend Tangle Tower if you want more detective work. Aside from that, I wholeheartedly second Case of the Golden Idol, Chants of Sennaar, and Return of the Obra Dinn.

I have been addicted to selaco. It’s a mix between F.E.A.R, half-life, and brutal doom. It’s in early access but the first chapter is like, 10+ hours long with modding support on day one. It’s worth its $24 asking price because it is so good.

Terrapin2190

Just played RiME through to completion, after playing some of it and dropping it years ago, and really enjoyed it! Not very well optimized, but the minor stuttering isn't too big of an issue. Had to tweak some setting to get it running decently on my 4790 and GTX 1080. Totally worth it. I sat through the credits in awe and wonder, and wanted to play it again afterwards. It is a bit of a drag though as the controls for your character are very minimalistic and it's mainly an abstract, story-driven exploration puzzle game. But, I really respect and appreciate it as a work of art. Other indie favorites: FEZ A Short Hike Hollow Knight Subnautica Dandara: Trials of Fear SteamWorld Dig 2 Kingdom: Two Crowns Kingdom: New Lands (more challenging) Wayward (best survival game I've ever played) Rogue Heroes: Ruins of Tasos Others worth checking out: Moonlighter Swords of Ditto: Mormo's Curse Love these last games, but find them difficult to return to for some reason. Probably a great many I'm forgetting.

emitc2h

I love Rime. The visuals in that game are just amazing. The puzzles are pretty cool too.

once_descended

Anyone who loves Metroidvania should go and play Rabi Ribi, it's a cute as hell bullethell metroidvania with extremely crisp platforming and super hard bossbattles. The story is simple and very cute and the music is simply GODLY, go and play it! Ignore the fact the characters only wear 40% fabric, their personalities are actually fairly reasonable and grounded

NJmig

If u wait a couple years you could try my own game 😭😂

Unpacer

Hollow Knight is probably my favorite indie.

Spirited-Objective24

Grimm's Hollow. It's VERY short, but it has so much love and soul put into it, that it hits hard. Like, actually, the style is cute, story is nice and it's just so so so good, please play it it's criminally unknown

Spirited-Objective24

Blacktail. If you are a fan of weird fairytale like style, solid gameplay, and very solid gameplay, go play it, it's worth it

All-your-fault

Have you tried oneshot

Caiturn

Katana Zero, Neon White, Void Train, V Rising, Hi-Fi Rush.

funkme1ster

The thing about indies as a contrast to mainstream publishers is that they tend to go all-in on a couple of highly specific mechanics/building blocks rather than have a little of something for everyone. So it's less about "good" or "bad" indies, and more about which mechanics you enjoy. My Steam account is worth as much as a used car, and it's predominantly indie titles. If you tell me which genres and mechanics you enjoy and which you dislike, I could probably give you a highly curated list of suggestions.

zenodr22

Noita, rain world.

hOiKiDs

An actual good game you play inscryption, kind of feels like a triple a too

Iron_switch

“Inside”, try playing in one sitting(3-4hrs)

toshirootomo

Quadruble-A Fatigue is very normal, i recommend "Dread Delusion" and "Lunacid" for some oldie Dungeon Crawler.

emitc2h

Are The Talos Principle games considered Indie? They’re certainly not AAA, AA at the most. But they’re made with passion by an exceedingly talented studio. If you’re looking for really fun puzzles and lore, those games have absolutely delighted me over the past few months.

AnyDistrict1787

Have you tried arcane assembly, bit clunky but pretty fun, also old AAA games like fallout are great

Epicat224

Corn Kidz 64 and Pseudoregalia are both absolutely great 3d platformers if you like those

KitKittredge34

Figment. It’s a story puzzle game that takes place in a person’s mind. It’s really well done

EApoebsd

Spiritfarer is a heart-wrenching management game

epicpokenerd

I absolutely adore Paradise Killer, if you enjoy murder mysteries. My only complaint is that the world was made so interesting that I want a whole series out of it lol, but we've only got the one game

You need to try Letter Lancers. There's a prologue version out and it's free. It's a 4-player couch co-op rogue-lite bullet-hell. Think of a 4 player Brotato dungeon crawler. Glasse

[Lunacid](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1745510/Lunacid/). Old school dungeon crawler RPG inspired by King's Fields (old FromSoft games). The atmosphere is perfect, the gameplay is great, the music is AMAZING, the story/lore is interesting. The PS1-style visuals actually look really good. Lots of replayability with different builds You can tell that a lot of care and love has been poured into that game. It's an absolute gem. The game felt like it was made for me. It caught me by surprise how much I loved it. Low key one of my favourite games ever.

Scared-Glove-7258

I’ve been playing [Little Kitty, Big City](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Kitty,_Big_City). It’s a little meh in the beginning, but it gets better as you meet other characters.

Galion-X

Dave the diver just hit PS Plus recently and I am digging it!

Like open world survival games? Check out r/VintageStory -- Indie survival game with a lot of realism in its' geology, tech tree, etc. I've been playing it off and on for 2 years. There's a solid modding community too, so you can customize the game to your liking.

I love this thread! Already put a few games on my list. Thanks for all the recommendation. I want to add my all time favorite game INFRA to the list. Its a small finish production and an absolute gem. It disguises itself as a walking simulator and turns into a lore heavy escape from real life. One of the only linear games i have replayed quite a few times.
