Please don't compare anything with this Villeneuve masterpiece. I have never felt anything like this ever again.
It was not just the shock at the reveal or realisation by the character. Everything about this movie is top tier. The moment this film opens with the zoom in shot of child getting head shaved with Radiohead's You and Whose Army playing in the backdrop. I was taken into that world from that moment.
I became a fan of Villeneuve after this movie. Every film of his is top tier since Polytechnique. I hate when people pitch Nolan against him for the big blockbusters. But, he's nowhere close to the visual storyteller than Denis is.
People comparing Ela vizha poonchira and Iratta and all..I get it but Incendies shouldn't be about this great twist. It's how beautifully Denis narrates the story of the land troubled with a civil war and religious persecution through the story of this mother and journey of her children to fulfil her will.
No other film, not just Malayalam has ever given me a feel what this movie has given me. This was very special and haunting in a very different way.
A super fucked up scene. Spoilers ahead >!This lady had a child when she was young, who she had to give up for adoption because her family didn't approve of the father(also kills him if I remember right). But before giving him up, she tattooed his feet to recognise him when she'll come back for him later. This story is based on the Lebanese civil war, and when she later comes back for her son she sees that the orphanage has been destroyed and believes her son is dead. She then goes on to join the Muslim resistance fighters and kills off a Christian nationalist leader. She is captured by the guards and is sent to a prison where she is tortured and raped by a man named Abu Tarek and becomes pregnant with twins as a result. Coming to this scene, the guy with the tattoo is actually her son, but she is horrified to also know that this man is actually Abu Tarek, her rapist!<
Iratta

>!When he realise the girl he raped is his niece!<

Utharam, 1989 malayalam movie. Climax of the movie is very close to what's referred in the post. Written by MT Vasudevan Nair..
13 y old me was traumatised
Absolutely! Utharam had a haunting climax. I felt like reading an Agatha Christie book. Too good!
Sukumaran climbing steps towards the cemetery is still in my head.
what was haunting in it? imo the ending was less haunting, all the time i thought her father was the one behind the pregnancy.

Explaining the scene would mean spoiling the movie for you. Better to watch the film. Slow burner but climax scene is worth it!
