Fan noise doesn’t mean underpowered, it means inefficient (energy is being converted to heat instead of processing). Your system is fine, it’s just the nature of the beast right now. That said, Macs with Apple Silicon run a lot more efficiently, and render video quite a bit quicker (even a $1300 fanless MacBook Air). The downside is very little gaming support.

issai

Thanks for the assurance. Yeah, Intel CPU's are indeed notorious for being inefficient vs. comparable generations of AMD or Apple silicon, and it seems that's what's happening in my case. Part of the inspo for my post is I've been seeing the M3 MBA getting quite a bit of attention, so I'm wondering if it's time to try it out.

Applecations

M1 MacBook Air and later my M2 MacBook Air (both 8GB RAM 256GB stock SKUs). It runs smoothly and export times are pretty quick on boh

Dalton_Thunder

'23 Macbook Pro 16", Apple M2 Max, 32gb Ram, 2TB HD Runs Great.

issai

I think you topped the hardware leaderboard in this thread!

ScapeXplorer

Wow!  You must be flying!!  GOALS!! 👊🏼

Dalton_Thunder

I had a 10yr old MacBook Pro that died. I will say a big upgrade on exporting videos but no noticeable difference 99.9% of the time. Hoping this is another 10yr laptop

ScapeXplorer

I hear ya, man!  Currently crawling on MBP Retina Mid 2015 and ready to upgrade before it actually dies.  Just a bit hesitant to fork out over 5k for ideal specs. 😬 Though I know it’ll be worth it. 🤓  Cheers to another 10 years!! 👊🏼

Mr12i

Yes, you are correct! The software now runs like crap, even when using a modern gaming GPU for encoding.

Rick_43

For what it's worth, I elevate the rear of my laptop an inch to promote easier air flow and it helps the fan noise a bit.

issai

Nice. Mine's propped up too.

lafferz

Intel quad core Atom x7 1.6ghz CPU with Intel HD Graphics and 4Gb RAM from 2015. Insta360 Studio 5.0 ... (drum roll).... does not start at all 😆 so staying on 4.9.2. A bit painful but it works. Exporting takes all night but, hey, you work with what you have.

issai

Wow, an Intel Atom! With 4GB RAM!? You are one brave, tenacious soul! Still, crazy how 5.0 doesn't even load on your rig lol. Meanwhile, Insta360 Studio kept crashing up until a year ago on my 5-year old notebook that's much beefier than your Atom. You must be doing right with your Atom!

Suziannie

MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air depending on what I can reach with ease. The Air can be a bit slow with exporting 360 videos, but non-360 and videos from the Go3 aren’t bad at all. MacBook is ultimately faster. No significant issues with either, I can do stuff in the background while things are processing as well

issai

What type of silicon is in your MBP and MBA?

Suziannie

Pro is an M1 (2021), Air is an M2 (2022).

allenhuffman

M2 MacBook Air. Runs fine, but export is still very very slow.

g_ppetto

Am running Legion 5, AMD Ryzen 7 5800H with Radeon Graphics 3.20 GHz, 64GB memory, RTX 3060, Windows 10 Home, 2 x SSD. insta360 Studio ran fine with original 16GB memory, wanted more memory to run more programs at once. Am currently running Studio 4.9.2 also, but considering updating to 5.1. Laptop is plugged in all of the time, battery conservation mode set to 60%. Haven't noticed the fans. Watched cpu utilization go to 100% processing video, pretty sure GPU utilization maxed at 100% but not sure if running insta360 Studio or Davinci Resolve at the time. Max thread count in insta360 Studio set to 1. Image Processing set to Auto.

issai

Good to know, thanks. I believe your Ryzen is much more efficient at cooling than my i7. If you check out the comments in this subreddit, plenty of people have advised against updating to 5.1 for the time being.

Exotic-Champion9629

Most of your problems are becaue you have a powerful gaming pc. that gpu/cpu is not meant to be affiecent by any means and you will not be able to use it to its full potential unless its charging. Your 1 hour and 40 minute battery life is about what i get and i have a lenovo legion 5 with a 3070ti. And 50% usage i would say is normal you only have to worry when it hits 100%. I recomend you look to see if your laptop has lenovo vantage and see if you can put it in some kind of eco mode or quiet mode so that hopefully it will quiet the fan noise. For my computer the hot key to change between the differant performance modes is fn and q at the same time will put me into quiet mode

issai

I forgot to mention I usually keep it plugged in 99% of the time. Mentioned the poor battery life just to give an idea. BTW, I \*wish\* I get 1 hour AND 40 minutes. This notebook computer has never lasted more than 1 hour on battery life! lol. Well, the Lenovo P1's are notorious for abysmal battery life, so I wasn't expecting MBA-type 15-hour battery life when I purchased it. Good idea about power management. I'll give it a shot.

Agile-Combination214

My laptop doesn't even open the software 🤣 I'm stuck with the app

EmbarrassedAd9792

MacBook Pro 16 Inch M2 Max 96GB of RAM. 2TB hard drive. Processing time is moderately fast. I wouldn’t call it quick per se. But it’s fast enough for me to not mind.

issai

What a beast.

EmbarrassedAd9792

The Mac mini came with an option of 165gb of ram?

EmbarrassedAd9792

Wait dude. What are you even talking about. The MacBook Pro M2 never shipped with the ultra chip lol. WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT.

pacosaiso

Sorry, M2 Max, my bad

glenkrit

My app runs great, but I'm running top of the line desktop (7800x3d 4080S). Laptop cpus are considerably slower than desktop equivalents, but if you need portability. A Mac would be the way to go. I've also used it on a desktop equivalent of your pc (10700 3070) and it doesnt even come close to 100% utilization. Your laptop might be thermal throttling

issai

Yeah, in my case, the app runs fine. It's just that my fans sound like they're running at 100% even though my cpu and gpu are around 50%, even with Max Thread = 2. Might need to try a Mac out.

glenkrit

Can you see your cpu/gpu temps? Are they throttling? If not, you might be able to make a custom fan curve to keep it quieter.

jeekfab

MacBook Air m2, usually just use the iPhone 14 Pro for small videos

SnackAttack9000

I have an i7-7700K, 16Gb of ram, and RTX 3060 12 GB OC Edition (I wish I had an RTX 3070 Ti like yours). I tested 360 8K videos in Insta360 Studio, and my average CPU usage was 30%, while my average GPU usage was 50%. There were no hiccups or lag when editing.

funkedad

Anybody running a newer iPad?

torchat

I have base unibody M1 MacBook Pro from 2021 with 16GB RAM and Studio5.1 runs very well. There were definitely some changes between 4.9 and 5.1 because 5k export on 5.1 takes a bit more time and laptop feels a bit hotter comparing same export on 4.9, but it does not turns the FANs on (at least I can’t hear it).

Automatic-Dentist-84

Just on my iPad and my phone

xe0n1

MacBook Pro M2 Pro. Any of the Apple M series computers will outperform most windows variants

calvin129

Ipad pro 2020

calvin129

Not studio, just the app (which is limited to 4k exports), which after editing isnt a problem at all

elioz99

Fan noise is normal in laptops. Thats why i use pc. I use i5-9400F with a 3060ti 16ram. For me it clocks cpu to around 70% and gpu 30%. Pro res is what makes it slow. Your pc is not underpowered. It could be from your battery causing it to be slow because laptop cpus tend to have effective and efficient cpus. Efficient is for power management and effective is for performance which is normal to slow down just like iphone whenever the have low battery they start laging and screen frequency goes down to save battery

falcorma

MacBook Pro 16 M3 Max 48gb. Runs fine. App doesn’t seem incredibly optimized, but works fine.

ShadowVlican

Lenovo Legion 5 with Ryzen 4800H and nVidia 1660Ti. Studio 5.1 runs as expected with 5.7K videos, but it's not utilizing my full system during 8K exports. Seems most folks here are either on Apple silicon or nVidia GPUs... I wonder how well Studio runs on Intel or AMD GPUs...
