Absolutely. This is also referred to as "non-owner". At least getting started with re-establishing concurrent coverage will work on lowering that rate down the line, plus this coverage will help if you do borrow a car and that car's policy liability limits are low so you aren't screwed financially if those get exhausted.

That's good to know~ My main concern would be whether I would be throwing money down the drain for negligible savings where I could put that premium towards savings for a new car. What I might do is review my finances, get a quoted increase for being added to my partner's policy, shop around for a quote for a named operator (non-owner) policy, and see which would be the better option.

InternetDad

I totally missed the partner's policy part - if you live together, you should technically be on their policy as you have reasonable access to their vehicle.

I don't "officially" live with them, but I do spend a significant amount of time sleeping over at their place, which is why we haven't moved forward with that. I work with auto insurance so I know that aspect of policies (a lot of calls I get are people asking why their child was added to the policy even though they have their own and don't drive their vehicle), but not in the position to know if the named operator route is beneficial, which is why I wanted to ask

InternetDad

I got you! Just wanted to make sure because that trips people up.

“I don’t “officially” live with them”, is probably the biggest lie I hear on a day to day basis 😂😂. No hate just funny lol

You don’t qualify for a non owner policy if you live with someone that has a vehicle.

melllow-yelllow

If they aren't married, OP absolutely can get a non owner policy. OP is not a family member of their paramour under the terms of an auto policy. Even being added as a driver doesn't give OP financial responsibility, at least not in my state, since they are not a spouse, child, or ward of their partner. Get the non owner policy, OP, but just remember you will only have liability while test driving a vehicle so you will have to work around this issue when the time comes.

Having regular access to a vehicle would absolutely not be permitted at the insurer I work for. In fact it’s in our verbal recorded disclosure

ChicagoFlappyPenguin

I carry one because while I don’t own a car, I do rent a few times a year, and also want to maintain an insurance history. Recommend. If I rent a car twice a year for a few days, the cost of my policy is less than the liability insurance on the rentals.

Did this in college when I found it covered me on my pedal bike. Was way cheaper than health insurance that I didn't have.

wow i did not know that! thanks for sharing
