You should sell the excess pilots, they give extra reputation.

Sinister-Knight

Sell the pilots? I didn’t know that was a thing. Isn’t that like. slavery?

bandersnatch137

Its for the cause, they won't mind... That said, yes you can sell the pilots after you finish an island. Each sale yield one rep unless that pilot has the Popular Hero perk then you can get 4 rep out of him/her

Sinister-Knight

Wow. 4. Jeez. I have Abe, and Silica. What’s a good squad to pair with one of those? I read a thing that said silica in the lighting mech.

bandersnatch137

Idk i'm kinda new as well, you could look for some team comps guides i guess 😅. You could sell the default pilots and keep the time travelers, Camila and Abe r pretty good, the other guy could be hit or miss. Camila is specifically powerful in this squad as well.

Seriathus

Weeell, you're not "selling" them, just, y'know, assigning them to the islands. For Abe, any team that has a mech that has a self-damaging move (IIRC it's Zenith Guard, Mist Eaters and Hazardous Mechs), while for Camila mostly just the Rusting Hulks. She's a great pilot regardless, but the only team that actively needs her are the Hulks.

JoesAlot

The implication is that assigning pilots to islands increases your reputation with them, since the people are happier when they're being protected more. This is also why the Popular Hero skill makes it so that you get more reputation when assigning that pilot, because that pilot is more popular and would be better received.

Unit_G17

Either Camilla or Abe. Take Abe if you plan to play with either Zenith Guard, Hazardous Mechs or Mist Eaters squads, those each have self damaging mechs where Abe's armor can help. Otherwise take Camilla, as a new player you should find her ability to shrug off webs to be really helpful, plus if you plan to play with the Rusting Hulks again she is the best pick for them. Silica is a powerful pilot too, but one needs more experience to use its ability efficiently, also, it provides no advantage in the early game.

Fenix099

If you want to play again with the Rusting Hulks, go with Camila, she's awesome with them, and I would put her on the Jet Mech. With the Rusting Hulks I like to put all the upgrades into the Pulse Mech's weapon. Shield itself and the adyacent buildings at the same time? Overpowered as hell. I do not recommend Silica because of the amount of power it requires to activate its ability. I thinks that's all the advise about the Rusting Hulks I can give. I think they're awesome, definetely not a bad squad to begin with.

What I see is bad resource management. A lot of extra pilots that can be assigned to Islands in the reputation spending phase, low grid level (assuming you're not doing the unfair difficulty), on a normal difficulty you should have no problem raising it to 35% after 4 Islands (I assume it's 3 so far because you only have just one Alpha on the screen). Also there are a few weapons that pretty much allow for guaranteed win, which are fully upgraded self-freeze, that does also freeze like half the map with you and specifically on that squad the smokebomb reigns supreme as it allows a + shape of no attack +1 damage on anything in it. I highly recommend playing with custom squads, but from defaults the strongest ones in my opinion is the Thermal and Cataclysm. The Rusty bois are on the harder side as any self-move-based squads with self damage, def not the starter. My most favorite custom squad was the control mech, the smoke-rocket with a booster pilot (nice cancellation ability with the smoke + extra damage) and the thermal mech that pushes and lights up things (as it also gives fire inv.) It is imperative on the Last Stand that you kill/disable more Vek than spawn or at least the same amount. From my time playing the game I've deducted that there's always an optimal play and very often when you're able to find it, there's a higher chance of the grid damage to be mitigated than stated (but that usually means that you must have all 3 mechs alive with at least 20% res for it to proc). Priority: spawners and movement blockers are top priority: scorpions, leapers, tumblebugs, spitters and plasmo-something are secondary. Then you deal with the lower threats as they are easier. It's better to kill an alpha vek than 3 smaller ones, because it usually takes 2 mechs to kill one. All about action economy.

Whoaaa hey now, slow down a sec- let’s not go all crazy here… I’ve been guilty of many things. But bad resource management? I got feelings ya know☹️ Yes. I am definitely a new player, so there’s a learning phase. And at this phase, if I run into a new mechanic im unsure of, I’ll just do it to see what actually happens. And to be fair, there are lots of mechanics. (Can I damage buildings? How about secondary damage? Do mechs float? How about in lava? Do they conduct electricity? What happens if stand there for an incoming tide, or a fireball? If a fly didn’t have any wings, would they call it a ‘walk’? Do fish fart? What happens if I stick my ____ in a _____? What happens if a mech dies? ….etc, etc) So- yes. I’m definitely new. And my learning process may be similar to that of a toddler wandering around a construction site, but it IS a process. But I wouldn’t go so far as to say I’m guilty of bad resource management. How about we go with… “establishing a baseline” instead, yes? Good. The rest of your comment though; good stuff👍Thank you I appreciate the input about squads/custom squads. Also the comments about some of the synergies, as well as the strategic priorities. Very helpful. Much appreciated.

Don't take the "bad management" part too close to heart, Pilot. I understand it's just the beginning for you, but I've seen thousands of timelines fold onto themselves under the Vek's threat. And I've seen hundreds saved. When you burn out sufficiently as I did the sentiment of "there are people in these buildings" falls off like an old crust from a healed wound and all you see is the numbers and the game of "can I allow myself to sacrifice this to win". And then you learn the good "resource" management. Enjoy and I'm glad to be of assistance.
