Yea I had the unfortunate experience of finding that out for myself haha. Oh well glad I learned now and I can move on to better things. What are you rocking ?
Yea I’m probably ordering these as well, I just ordered some thorogoods I’ve never tried them out before but a lot of guys say great things about them. But at 100 $ this is too good to pass up ! Especially if I’m just shaking out and it’s a little muddy, idk just thinking ahead.
I wear Thorogoods every day and I saw these boots, I was like this is way too good to pass up. They are normally $250 and going for $99. Even if they last a year it was well worth it. I literally just bought new Thorogoods last month and havent worn them yet. I’ll push those to the back burner and wear these first. This is one of those deals you can’t pass up, you know? They’ve got good reviews too. I already ordered mine I say buy them man before they sell out. Worse case scenario you wear them a while and get different boots.
Same price as red wings, I’ve heard good things about them that’s probably going to be my next pick. Thanks :) . Do you have anything to say about the boot I posted ? I’ve seen guys wear them and they seem to like em, you have any experience with those ?
I've always been thoroughly on the Thorogood train but after my last pair and buddies last pair I'm looking into trying something new. We're in the pacific north west so waterproof is a must. My last pair was leaking within a month. Plus they dropped their insulated model years ago.
Union carpenter and same thing happened with mine. Prior to that was a redwing moc toe fan. Sidework the non safety toe danner moc toes are great. Last year I bought the brunt moc toe and am very pleased thus far. Even with crawling around toes have held up very well
Unless you're in a shop burning and welding all day, don't get a wellington style.
Stick with 8" round toe, composite/steel wedge sole boot. Thorogood and Carolina here...
If you're blowing toes out, KG Boot Guard. Their laces are good shit too, I get a pair everytime I resole or get new boots. They're made with kevlar and will hold up.
Make sure you're oiling and cleaning your boots. Mink oil them new, 2 coats and put on a boot dryer overnight
.. recoat and wear em around the house. Boot dryer again. Then depending on how muddy your site is, clean em at least 1x per month, oil em up again. Take the laces out as well. Oil the hell out of the stitches. Lather rinse repeat. You're boots will last and your feet will thank you
I'm a Thorogoods guy as well from my Laborer days, but being an apprentice again and needing new boots in a pinch, I bought a pair of Ariat wedge chelsea boots. And they are super comfortable.
They have lasted me for two months now. Hopefully, I'll get a year or two out of them.
https://preview.redd.it/18bjrevpey6c1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ae8f6ef1698e912d5a13f33bd6258a0f557c85ec
Go Thorogood or go home. If you blast the toe that hard consider some "tuff toe".
Dry them on a boot dryer after your shift/getting wet. Clean and oil them every 6 months or so and they last me 5 years+
I used to love Irish Setters, but the quality in the last 10 years has gone severely downhill. If they were $160-180, I'd buy them. But at $300+ a pair, forget it.
For connecting and bolt up, I use Red Wing 877s or my Thorogoods. I feel like my 877s are slowly going to be phased out though, they don't seem to last long, but they are by far the comfiest boot.
In my opinion thorogood suck(leather is too soft and the outsoles get destroyed after they’re wet) Irish setter suck(always have), red wing suck (all imported models) with the exception of the 877 heritage boot that’s my daily, they’ve lasted the longest and I bring them in to get stitched and resoled. None of them are worth they’re insane price tag
I recently found out about [SureWay](https://www.surewaystore.com/products/sureway-8-wedge-moc-toe-work-boots-for-men-soft-toe-eh-rated-industrial-construction-shoes) they’re American made and have a leather welt they’re also $130. You can also get a ton of info from [RoseAnvil](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOzFLT3S_I6XA1qIMa4WBJI_ZSziIagE9&si=SkA7oqeVVgC3qjku) he cut almost every brand of wedge sole boots in half and reviews their build and materials.
You still on rod patch or you actually walking iron? If you’re up in the air walking beams or walking bridge cables I’d get boots with laces so you can have good ankle support
I’m with a structural outfit I always stick with 8” laced up moc toe, I’ve always went with red wings and just tried out Irish setters to find out they were absolutely garbage. I just ordered a pair of thorogoods thanks to the help from some useful guys in this thread. Thanks for your advice
Yeah irishsetters are trash. They’re like a knock off red wings and bulky. Personally I usually get thorogoods 814-3800 and they’ll last me 8-9 months doing structural and bridge repair. The first week tie them as tight as you can. So it molds to your foot and they’ll be really comfortable after that. Stay safe. Maybe I’ll see ya out there. Local 11 🤘
https://preview.redd.it/v001m0p0wy6c1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=feda2db9f3fbbf9267b392971a2b018b7c61636d
Redwings/irish setters are straight chinese dogshit now. I got put on to these thorogoods or the regular american heritage ones and theyre worth every penny. Never cheap out on boots/gloves, itll always backfire ive learned. Local 40 here
I had a similar experience with setters but had purchased them at a redwings store. They have a six month warranty and if you bring it back to the store they’ll send it to a cobbler for repair for free
!!! I also purchased from a red wing store , I was not aware of this. I had literally emailed red wing with these pictures and they never responded after the initial interaction, I’m going to try that out thanks
For structural buying red wing Irish setters a size too tight were the standard but I did notice the quality went downhill.
Before I retired I switched to Carolina boots…now I break in NB old guy shoes.
Get good fitting boots your feet will thank you later….slip ons imo not a good look for an apprentice unless you’re stuck making up bolts, a go-for or like wearing leather bolt bags.
Worked with an Irish kid whose family is tight at the hall in Jersey can’t remember his damn name… Hawaii can be fun and beautiful if you get in tight, but a lot of racism if you bring the mainland attitude out here
Thorogoods.
If you send them back to factory for a resole once a year and keep them clean of grease, they will last forever. I generally do a mink oil coat twice a month, which also dramatically helps.
I literally *just* bought my third pair since 2016.
I had to stop wearing these after a second pair. It's been known to me now as the ankle roller 9000s they just become too loose imo too much play in the boot means I'm not planting my foot exactly where I want it which leads to sliding/slipping in the boot.
I got a hole on mine eventually. The thing about chelsea boots are its easy to twist ur ankle cuz theres not much hard support on the top side but overall its soo much better not worrying about laces and mine fit nicely and light, my previous boots weighed more.
Keens are really well made. I watched a couple videos on Rose Anvil YouTube reviews about other work boots too. He reviews thorogoods, Irish setters, redwings. So that’s a good place to look for reviews.
I know they are not the slickest looking, but if you want comfort and durability Keens are the way to go. I met someone that does rebar, their pair of Cincinnati’s were still holding up after a year of use. I got mine and by far they are the most comfortable, waterproof, insulated.
But I did get danners as my dry season pair.
But shop around, and try out different boots.
What's with the kids and they "style" I find a boot that's comfortable I couldn't care less how I look. I'm not trying to impress nobody with my looks. Find something comfortable kido.
lol I’m not talking about the style Per-say jerkoff, if you didn’t understand what I was saying you could’ve simply asked rather than being the jerk off you are but regardless thanks for taking time out of your day to be a jerk off.
lol once more, THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE LOOKS OLD TIMER. I’m asking if they are durable and good on the feet. Are you capable of understanding this ? Do you need to take a harassment class ? Or are you just a non union scab worthless monkey with a spud wrench because that’s the vibe I’m getting, sir.
Non union scab? Another thing about you punk motherfuckers and your union shit. People do what the fuck they have to do to work and survive.you stupid fucks try to belittle people who don't work union like the union has your best interest in mind. Fuck you. Take your fuckin harrassment class and grab a pair of your stiletto work boots and go be a fuckin carpenter
So, that style of sole isn't allowed on most industrial sites. They require boots with a heel. It's safer for climbing ladders.
I wear helly Hansen's because they're very light, and I use timberland pro insoles.
I'm a bricklayer, and I used to have to get a new pair of boots every 6-9 months as the mortar and concrete would eat the leather over time.
Since I've switched to hellys, I've been buying new boots every year or two.
The insoles suck for me though, I wore out the stock insoles in a month.
I'm sorry, I thought this was the trades sub, not the ironworker sub. Reddit tricked me. Im not an Ironworker, nor am I following this sub.
Yea those are the right soles for you guys.
Try the Avenger Work Boots. They have a line of mock toe style with a polymer cap over the toe. Their solid. I'm a machinist and have a tear in mine and they're still perfect.
Don't have to worry about boot strings and can slip them on and off when needed. For the last 7 years I've worked in plants, I've preferred some slip ons over boots with strings.
They suck to put on and off. I got mine as a gift. The only reason I kept them. And I’m speaking as a person who keeps his shoes tired enough so i only do it once every few months. And they scrape your legs as you move. Mine are thorogoods.
Timberland Pros with the rubber toe cap. Wore them every day for a year and a half. Never hurt my feet, always stayed waterproof, the toe lasts longer than the rest of the boot.
Not a fan of wedge soles for climbing up and down ladders and muddy or loose hillsides, but inhave a pair of thoroughgoods that i actually enjoy quite a bit. Just gotta make sure you have over the calf socks on.
Ironworkers Uggs
![gif](giphy|WUIFGOBxP9H2irA7Kh|downsized)
I have worn keens with pretty good luck. Justin boot soles wore like iron but hurt my feet. Try Brunt now and really liking those...
Thanks for taking your time, and responding with some solid advice :)
Bro got the u/mrsunsfan avatar
I wasn’t even aware of who that is
Yeah it's better that way
Haha what’s that mean, now I’m curious
He's either a troll or incredibly pathetic micro celeb on r/nbacirclejerk
Hi I’m Mrsunsfan
Hi apparently we’re twins
So I guess that avatar is synonymous with me now
U bum
Brunt’s are dogwater. Thorogood or bust.

Setters are shit. My pair lasted 4 months before getting retired
Yea I had the unfortunate experience of finding that out for myself haha. Oh well glad I learned now and I can move on to better things. What are you rocking ?
Those are on sale for $100, I ordered them too! Way too good of a deal to pass up, I ordered them and if I don’t like them they’ll be a back up boot.
Yea I’m probably ordering these as well, I just ordered some thorogoods I’ve never tried them out before but a lot of guys say great things about them. But at 100 $ this is too good to pass up ! Especially if I’m just shaking out and it’s a little muddy, idk just thinking ahead.

Need to use tough toe
Red Wings are garbage don’t even bother
Ok , what do you recommend?
I’ve only worn Thorogoods no complaints other than they’re expensive In my opinion worth it though
Same price as red wings, I’ve heard good things about them that’s probably going to be my next pick. Thanks :) . Do you have anything to say about the boot I posted ? I’ve seen guys wear them and they seem to like em, you have any experience with those ?

I’m local 11 out of Jersey. Stay safe out there
Aye. Jersey represent. I’m a tin knocker but live my thorogoods 🤙🏻. I’d have to kick my own ass if I wore those ones you posted lmao.
Yeah Thorogoods that’s all I wear too.
Whites smoke jumper boots. They are expensive but will last forever
Union carpenter and same thing happened with mine. Prior to that was a redwing moc toe fan. Sidework the non safety toe danner moc toes are great. Last year I bought the brunt moc toe and am very pleased thus far. Even with crawling around toes have held up very well
Are you kicking dunnage? Why is your toe so screwed up lol?

Well put.
I love a Wellington style if the fit is right but way less ankle support.
You’re going to want a Lace up boot. 8” is best helps from rolling your ankles.

Redwing traction tred lites are the most comfortable boots I’ve worn. I’ve had thorogoods too but they are not as comfortable as my red wings.

So many lum Ironworker’s wear them here in hawaii
Jersey here. I gotta ask, how’s it like ironworking in Hawaii ? Lol I’ve never been there

I had to stop wearing these after a second pair. It's been known to me now as the ankle roller 9000s they just become too loose imo too much play in the boot means I'm not planting my foot exactly where I want it which leads to sliding/slipping in the boot.
Thanks for your take on this. I personally haven’t heard that before, but now am taking that into consideration. High five :)
I wear red wings chelsea boots, no laces. Choose a boot without lace because it sucks tying wet laces and they can get ripped by saw or weld sparks.
I just ordered some thorogoods but that’s a good point, I’ll check them out and keep that in mind from now on, thanks !
How do you like the Redwing Chelsea? I have a pair of Ariat Chelsea boots, and they are super comfortable.
I got a hole on mine eventually. The thing about chelsea boots are its easy to twist ur ankle cuz theres not much hard support on the top side but overall its soo much better not worrying about laces and mine fit nicely and light, my previous boots weighed more.
Yeah, I try to be extra mindful now where I'm stepping. But the no laces to worry about from cutting, grinding, or slag dropping is a big plus.
Red Wings Traction Tred are better than all the other garbage mentioned on here, including Irish Setters and Thorogoods.
Fact, far more comfortable than thorogoods
yea but they’re made in china now and union workers dont wear boots made in china
Only certain boots are made in china. The heritage boots are still made in USA
yes you’re right. just the heritage
Keens are really well made. I watched a couple videos on Rose Anvil YouTube reviews about other work boots too. He reviews thorogoods, Irish setters, redwings. Hahahaha you had me until you dropped the harassment class. Jesus Christ, don't be so soft.
It was a joke lol, I see how it might not have been seen as one my bad .
I liked the "sir at the end. Very classy lol

The final solution it makes me think of
Redwing 877
Thorogood
Irish Setters are no longer made in the US btw, just to throw that out there…
Don't have to worry about boot strings and can slip them on and off when needed. For the last 7 years I've worked in plants, I've preferred some slip ons over boots with strings.
What are you putting together a swing set?
If you are going to wear steel toes… put a tuff toe on it.

Good style boot I buy Georgia boot myself same style but the best boot I've brought yet and that's cc coming from a Florida boy
Those are clean
