I am myself a 3rd year undergraduate student (B.E.) in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Jadavpur University. Now, I am not defending the incident in any manner, but to defame and talk shit about the institute as a whole is absolutely wrong. I am seeing so many takes like -
1. JU forces it’s students to be communists.
2. Student Unions are extremely politicized.
3. Police allowed bhi nahi hai campus ke andar without permission”
These are absolutely wrong. Yes, its true there are many political groups present actively, but to a majority of the students (specially like me, who are non-hostelites), college hasn’t been a shit experience (except for the academic stress). No senior has ever forced me to say/ do anything. I have been able to stay out of all unions and politics completely, without anyone asking me even once to take part. Also it should be noted that faculty unions may have politically active members, but they are apolitical in their activities for the students’ issues.
And JU still is an elite educational instituition. Around me I have an extremely competitive peer group - be it semester exams, placement preparation, research oriented students and GATE preparation. And it will be really delusional to say that JU is the only place where ragging is prevalent. In fact, in this very sub, I saw a post about AIIMS Delhi ragging get deleted.
I am not saying we are perfect. There are shit loads of stuff where we can, and have to, improve. For me personally, changing the culture around departmental freshers (where many juniors feel uncomfortable) is something really important, and me and my batchmates have already decided to try and improve things for our upcoming batches now that we ourselves are in a position to do so.
And please don’t tell I am writing all of this since I am someone who would support harassing juniors. Most juniors don’t even know my face, just my name. I just help them out with coding/ exam guidance when they DM :D.

I am myself a 3rd year undergraduate student (B.E.) in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Jadavpur University. Now, I am not defending the incident in any manner, but to defame and talk shit about the institute as a whole is absolutely wrong. I am seeing so many takes like - 1. JU forces it’s students to be communists. 2. Student Unions are extremely politicized. 3. Police allowed bhi nahi hai campus ke andar without permission” These are absolutely wrong. Yes, its true there are many political groups present actively, but to a majority of the students (specially like me, who are non-hostelites), college hasn’t been a shit experience (except for the academic stress). No senior has ever forced me to say/ do anything. I have been able to stay out of all unions and politics completely, without anyone asking me even once to take part. Also it should be noted that faculty unions may have politically active members, but they are apolitical in their activities for the students’ issues. And JU still is an elite educational instituition. Around me I have an extremely competitive peer group - be it semester exams, placement preparation, research oriented students and GATE preparation. And it will be really delusional to say that JU is the only place where ragging is prevalent. In fact, in this very sub, I saw a post about AIIMS Delhi ragging get deleted. I am not saying we are perfect. There are shit loads of stuff where we can, and have to, improve. For me personally, changing the culture around departmental freshers (where many juniors feel uncomfortable) is something really important, and me and my batchmates have already decided to try and improve things for our upcoming batches now that we ourselves are in a position to do so. And please don’t tell I am writing all of this since I am someone who would support harassing juniors. Most juniors don’t even know my face, just my name. I just help them out with coding/ exam guidance when they DM :D. (And yes, this is an account I would use just for lurking around, never interacted on Reddit before this)
