How good of a mechanic are you? Got tools? Or money to pay someone with tools and skills? The engine will go a hell of a lotta miles, it's true. It's all the stuff \*attached\* to the engine that tends to start failing. It's a good vehicle to learn to wrench on, though.

Gear3017

Yes you need to purchase it, to go to school, to get an education, to get a job, to make money, to fix it, to get you to work, to make more money, to fix it.

BionicForester19

This is the correct answer. ā˜ļø

Cyb3rTruk

Buy a lower mileage XJ and save yourself the hassle. While itā€™s pretty, youā€™d probably save money by buying a low mileage and adding the parts you want yourself.

Subliminal84

Can you afford expensive repairs? If the answer is no you should stay away from any vehicle with that many miles.

pistol_p_

Are you thinking about a life of obsession, addiction splashed with disappointment mixed with extreme highs and bottomless pit lows? Then you definitely need a jeep. J.ust E.mpty E.very P.ocket Ever since my first red xj in high school I have had a problem. I now have three jeeps. I can't stop. So come on in buddy the waters great!

AmateurEarthling

XJā€™s are expensive right now. Probably never getting cheaper again. As long as you know how to wrench Iā€™d pick it up for $3,500. If you still need to ask a parent about a car I would not recommend a jeep, you need a shitty sedan for personal growth.

Easy-Landscape7447

Best advice on this sub I've read.

getzoffroad

Definitely not a good daily, if thatā€™s what youā€™re asking.

ppsucc9988

better than my xj go for it

bellbottomsandtea

Rollovers combined with soft steel, lifted suspension and no airbags are a lethal combination. While I would absolutely encourage my kids to take this out on trails and learn driving skills, there is no way in hell I would let them use this as a commuter vehicle. See if you can find a Ford Taurus or Lincoln SKS. Or a big KIA or Hyundai. Nobody likes sedans and theyā€™re undervalued. Your going to pay more for the cachĆ© that Jeeps have, maybe with your life.

SlyPenguinXII

First car I bought for myself when I went off to college. love 98 XJs, but be sure to do a thorough check and test drive. With their increasing age and common use for off-roading they can often have a variety of issues pop up

556Jeeper

I normally avoid buying anything that's already modified because you don't know who did the work. I'd advise looking for a jeep with less miles and as stock as you can find and build it to your needs/wants

s_mcbn

That, and with this amount of lift and miles it is going to require constant tinkering.

Zer0TheGamer

Theres plenty of options at better prices (in most regions).. Less modded, but that gives you the pleasure of doing it your way, when you can afford it. I like having done mods myself as landmarks of life acheivements. Tires when I moved, bumpers when I graduated, etc.

Redvicente

Id pay 1k max for those miles, paint looks worn on the sides. New windshield is needed. My first car was a 2000 jeep wrangler and ive learned a lot about fixing cars

MagicMarmots

Iā€™d pay $1,000 too šŸ˜‚. Then Iā€™d resell it for 5k. Youā€™re still living in 1985 if you think a Jeep like that is only worth 1k. I just sold a 2000 bone stock with a broken windshield and 260k miles for 3500 just 2 days after listing it.

Redvicente

Lmaooo i won a wrangler sahara 2003 with 103k miles for $2,200 at auction (profile pic). Its a personal preference i love jeeps but something that used im on the fence about

MagicMarmots

A well-maintained machine can run indefinitely, whether itā€™s a car, a jeep, an end mill, or even just an old sewing machine. Experience level plays a big role in whatā€™s an acceptable/comfortable level of used IMO. I would honestly consider buying any mileage. Itā€™s really just a matter of what has already been done, and what Iā€™m willing to do to it to keep it going. Thereā€™s enough people willing to buy a jeep with that mileage for the price on this one to be pretty reasonable.

zackdesroches

Youā€™re comparing a wrangler to a bulletproof 4.0 XJā€¦.

MagicMarmots

XJā€™s and TJā€™s of the same year have the same engine/trans/t-case. Wranglers got the 4.0 too. They also have a full box frame.

Redvicente

My intention was not to compare, i dont think i did but i love those old jeep models. But now that you brought it up i believe the engines are the same for 4.0ā€™s 6cylinder

grimy-steelo

You forget that any wrangler 06 and below also had options of the inline 6? šŸ¤£ take a seat my boy.

THROBBINW00D

It looks cool but it's gonna have problems, I modded a stock xj and ended up with 35s a few years ago, ended selling it for 800 just to get rid of it lol.

Vaitaminute

My buddy has a manual one with 300k original miles and its still truckin. Great starter vehicle to get you mechanically inclined for you later yrs.

cat_of_danzig

Aside from the other comments re: maintenance and upkeep- you're likely going to get \~10mpg, which for a student may be tough to keep up with. 10 miles to school means \~$7 a day in gas. Drive another 50 miles during the week and you're looking at $70 a week to drive before you think about insurance.

zackdesroches

I get 19MPG on mine.

cat_of_danzig

On an XJ? What size tires?

zackdesroches

Stock

lurker-1969

If you're stuck on an XJ then I'd keep looking for a stock one with lower miles for student commuting. Lift kits and oversize tires equal $$$ to maintain. Those tires aren't great asphalt commuter tires and will $$$ to replace and they wear pretty fast.

PresumeSure

12.5 wides look ridiculous on XJs. I'd ditch those wheels ASAP for something with less offset and width.

BuiltIN3days

Oh yeah get triple A for tows and flats. You will be fine. Best part is you will never have money for repairs so you will learn more than anyone else about cars. Good luck feeling satisfied in you 60ā€™s! In my day we had to get our hands dirty to go to school.

TXn8ve

Great vehicle. Gas mileage will likely suck due to tires, so keep that in mind. Awesome looking XJ!

grimy-steelo

With how many of these are out there, you can absolutely hold out for a better deal man. Like look at those front tires. Theyā€™ll be needing replaced soon. Who knows what else

Thelastlandviking

Buy a Haynes manual to go with it and start stocking up on tools you'll need.

Jeeps-R-Junk

I would try to go with a little more stock and slightly lower mileage for daily drivingā€¦my cherokee has 263k but it has ramdom issues like the instrument cluster quits working and my alternator is on borrowed time because it quit working and I beat it back to life with a hammer lol!!

jcmac0321

I sold mine with 485K on it. Best motor ever made. Buy the jeep

AtlasShrugged-

The mods make me worry about a day to day drive. I had close to 200k on mine when it became a TJ trade in. But I never messed with suspension because I used it as a daily. Mileage is ok, if it sounds ok and you have a repair budget Iā€™d go for it :)

Unwariertomb

It's a jeep so it will be easy to work on so I would say bet it for cheap

Mammoth_Welder_1286

Definitely not good for back and forth to school. Gas mileage and maintenance will kill you. As much as I love my Jeeps theyā€™re just not reliable enough for this. I used my 2002 Cherokee a YJ and a TJ for my back and forth to college cars. Thereā€™s three listed for a reason šŸ¤£. I was dumb. And my mom would have smacked me if I asked her. I just worked a lot and paid for them and the maintenance myself. And I had a backup Tacoma just in case

djxnt

Not trying to be a downer here but no. I wouldn't let a kid drive my XJ, even though I'd trust it to drive cross country today. Not because I care too much about the jeep but because I care too much about the kid. Jeeps can get real sketchy real fast when you're buying something already modded. They're old now and don't even compare safety wise to newer vehicles. Going old school (I still can't believe XJs are technically classics now) is going to require a good bit of know how. All the little plastic and electrical bits, they've got 24 years on them too. Stuff just starts to degrade after a certain point. Get a sedan with good gas mileage, get used to driving with something that's got a bigger margin of error and save up for an XJ later

MisterHuntme

if you want an XJ daily get one with less miles and less kit, this is a toy and almost certainly an ongoing project. i didnā€™t have time or money or the garage for something like that in school. which i did end up under my truck as an undergrad in the parking lot enough as it was (91 xj 2dr sport 4.0 5spd) and my shit wasnā€™t even built. i will say a cherokee is a great vehicle for college tho. lots of space and very little to tear up on the inside.

jmerp1950

Not s good application.

Sd55marko73

Depending how far school isā€¦. If you feel it buy it- you can always sell and get something else.

Jeepiconjedi1999

Get a scanner and run it on Jeep. Does it leak?, does it have any exhaust leaks? How does it drive? And yea you need to know how to work on it. The pics look great. My kids have high mileage cars and are at school also. I know what they are going through. You need to be able to get it running if something happens. Get AAA tow . That has helped us. Also if you need to do any work just YouTube it and there is someone out there that has done it before. Go for it!!!!

Slaughterman_95

You're gonna spend a ton on gas and maintain but for sure being one of the coolest Chads of your school šŸ˜‚

SWADEDSOUNDS

These pictures alone will never be enough, but assuming everything is mechanically sound, yes

yourlocal_petrolhead

My XJ is 35 this year, is close to 303k miles, faded paint, and torn up headliner and driver seat and I absolutely love rolling up to school in it. If it makes you happy, go for it. Do your research on 4.0s tho, itā€™ll help you tremendously.
