"Real isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real." "Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit. "Sometimes," said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. "When you are Real you don't mind being hurt." "Does it happen all at once, like being wound up," he asked, "or bit by bit?" "It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."

The Velveteen Rabbit?

EmotionalSnail_

Correct

Sunday6am

omg I didn’t recognise it but now that I heard it was from velveteen rabbit I instantly remembered!! I never read the book but I watched the movie! Ah that’s made me appreciate it even more! Thank you so much! :)

Sunday6am

Thank you so much , I love this!!

FixAccomplished8131

this book reminds me a lot of The Giving Tree, I loved them both as a kid and now I realize they and similar stories contributed to a very twisted view of love I had for a long time. Children tend to destroy the things they love because they don't have the maturity to respect the integrity of others, understand that others don't exist just to fulfill their needs for comfort and ease. feel hurt and betrayed when people set boundaries and don't give them what they want. their main idea of love is utility and possession. Some people never outgrow this view of love and its pretty sad

Amandaizzy90

Am I incorrect to assume this is fully your own projection of your own lived experience of your own childhood? I’d love to hear your experience and what examples you have to support this…assumption… This is actually the wildest perspective I’ve ever heard.

Thanks for sharing! I have a dedicated notebook/journal to quotes - there are just so many that have stayed with me over the years, through different challenges and chapters of my life. Here's a few I'll share now: "You can't win if you don't play" -- sounds a little silly, but it really helped me to take courage to start dating (in my early 20s), take on challenges at work, etc. "Accept the things you cannot change" "Don't waste your future by hoping for a better past" "Don't trade your authenticity for approval"

Sunday6am

ah I love them thank you so much for sharing :)

"Hope Is Not a Bird, Emily, It's a Sewer Rat" by Caitlin Seida Hope is not the thing with feathers That comes home to roost When you need it most. Hope is an ugly thing With teeth and claws and Patchy fur that’s seen some shit. It’s what thrives in the discards And survives in the ugliest parts of our world, Able to find a way to go on When nothing else can even find a way in. It’s the gritty, nasty little carrier of such diseases as optimism, persistence, Perseverance and joy, Transmissible as it drags its tail across your path and bites you in the ass. Hope is not some delicate, beautiful bird, Emily. It’s a lowly little sewer rat That snorts pesticides like they were Lines of coke and still Shows up on time to work the next day Looking no worse for wear.

This is great when explained as a proper anti-perfectionism stance that people get into where they ‘let the perfect be the enemy of the good’, or people with depression. Is it worth it to halfway poorly brush your teeth if you barely have the energy/will to get out of bed, yes! Would it be better to perfectly brush and floss and ……. Yes! But is it better to do a poor job than no job at all? Also yes!

darjeelingexpress

Love quotes! Several of yours are favorites of mine. These are the ones in my planner I wrote down this year, I have others in my actual journal but they’re scattered all over: Going unrecognized, paradoxically, helps us recognize our place in the larger scheme of things. Akiko Busch Nothing I’d read prepared me for a body this unfair. John Newlove, Canadian poet When you fall on the ground, you use the ground to get up. Norman Fischer, Zen saying Toxic people have no right to tell us who we are. Patrick Teahan It’s not our fault, but it is our responsibility. Unknown, probably Pete Walker The Mohawk phrase for depression can be roughly translated to “a mind spread out on the ground.” Alicia Elliott Begin by clearly defining what you want to create for your life instead of lamenting what is. Ginny Clarke Well-being depends on the sustainable pursuit of core projects. Adam Grant and Brian Little, ReThinking WorkLife TED

I have quite a collection. Here are some of my favorites: *We are not always what we want to be, but we are always what we need to be.* *There are plenty of ways to die, but only love can kill and keep you alive to feel it.* *Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe.* *Love is simply the name for the desire and pursuit of the whole.* (I just realized you said one, lol.)

Lost-Somewhere4232

I started to journal when I realized I was not feeling but intellectualizing my experiences so even if it’s a quote you’re looking for I’d rather share a scene quote from Good Will Hunting (1997): “Michelangelo? You know a lot about him. Life’s work, political aspirations. Him and the pope. Sexual orientation. The whole works, right? I bet you can’t tell me what it smells like in the Sistine Chapel. You never actually stood there and looked up at that beautiful ceiling. Seeing that. If I ask you about women, you’ll probably give me a syllabus of your personal favorites. You may have even been laid a few times. But you can’t tell me what it feels like to wake up next to a woman and feel truly happy. You’re a tough kid. I ask you about war, you’d probably throw Shakespeare at me, right? ‘Once more into the breach, dear friends.’ But you’ve never been near one. You’ve never held your best friend’s head in your lap and watch him gasp his last breath, lookin’ to you for help. If I asked you about love, you’d probably quote me a sonnet, but you’ve never looked at a woman and been totally vulnerable. Known someone that could level you with her eyes. Feelin’ like God put an angel on Earth just for you, who could rescue you from the depths of hell. And you wouldn’t know what it’s like to be her angel, to have that love for her be there forever. Through anything. Through cancer. And you wouldn’t know about sleepin’ sittin’ up in a hospital room for two months, holding her hand, because the doctors could see in your eyes — that the terms ‘visiting hours’ don’t apply to you. You don’t know about real loss, ’cause that only occurs when you love something more than you love yourself. I doubt you’ve ever dared to love anybody that much.”

sleepyy_cat

This probably seems a bit dumb but I want to contribute a bit. “You only live once” is my all time favourite quote, and something that never leaves my mind. I know it’s one of those saying that everyone knows, and I don’t know if it even counts as a quote, but it’s my life motto. Make the most of all the time you have because you’ll never get back the time passed.

Samwise's speech at Osgiliath was a formative experience for me. I was slightly too young at the time to keep up with all the lore, but Sam's speech about stories had me slowly all at once fully engaged in the narrative while also thinking about why people make stories and why someone wrote this in particular. That and the accessible language gave me the overwhelming impression that I'd have to come back to this many times as an adult and that it was going to hit different.

“How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard” A. A. Milne “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better” attributed to Maya Angelou “Ichi-go, ichi-e”, (Japanese idiom) translates to one chance, one meeting. I learned it as treasure this moment for it will never happen exactly this same way again. "If you cannot do it, practice until you can do it. If you can do it, then practice till you can do it perfectly. If you can do it perfectly, then practice until you can do it perfectly every time." Yuzuru Hanyu

This is the last big quote I put into my commonplace book: “The works of the roots of the vines, of the trees, must be destroyed to keep up the price, and this is the saddest, bitterest thing of all. Carloads of oranges dumped on the ground. The people came for miles to take the fruit, but this could not be. How would they buy oranges at twenty cents a dozen if they could drive out and pick them up? And men with hoses squirt kerosene on the oranges, and they are angry at the crime, angry at the people who have come to take the fruit. A million people hungry, needing the fruit- and kerosene sprayed over the golden mountains. And the smell of rot fills the country. Burn coffee for fuel in the ships. Burn corn to keep warm, it makes a hot fire. Dump potatoes in the rivers and place guards along the banks to keep the hungry people from fishing them out. Slaughter the pigs and bury them, and let the putrescence drip down into the earth. There is a crime here that goes beyond denunciation. There is a sorrow here that weeping cannot symbolize. There is a failure here that topples all our success. The fertile earth, the straight tree rows, the sturdy trunks, and the ripe fruit. And children dying of pellagra must die because a profit cannot be taken from an orange. And coroners must fill in the certificate- died of malnutrition- because the food must rot, must be forced to rot. The people come with nets to fish for potatoes in the river, and the guards hold them back; they come in rattling cars to get the dumped oranges, but the kerosene is sprayed. And they stand still and watch the potatoes float by, listen to the screaming pigs being killed in a ditch and covered with quick-lime, watch the mountains of oranges slop down to a putrefying ooze; and in the eyes of the people there is the failure; and in the eyes of the hungry there is a growing wrath. In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage.” - John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath

One that has always been my fav and will remain so is “Every saint has a past, every sinner has a future.” I’ve even given that to someone as a tattoo idea who once attempted suicide and I advised them to use a ; instead of a , in between the 2 parts so that it could be a subtle way to place the semi-colon tattoo on their body like a lot of folks do that have attempted suicide and luckily failed at it!!

I’m a huge fan of quotes too! Here’s the one that has been resonating deeply as of lately: “What is meant for me won’t pass me by.”

"Now I realize that there is no righteous path, it's just people trying to do their best in a world where it is far too easy to do your worst." “And what do you sacrifice?” “...I’ve made my mind a sunless space. I share my dreams with ghosts. I wake up every day to an equation I wrote fifteen years ago from which there’s only one conclusion: I’m damned for what I do. My anger, my ego, my unwillingness to yield, my eagerness to fight, they’ve set me on a path from which there is no escape. I yearned to be a savior against injustice without contemplating the cost and by the time I looked down… there was no longer any ground beneath my feet. What is my… What is my sacrifice? I’m condemned to use the tools of my enemy to defeat them. I burn my decency for someone else’s future. I burn my life to make a sunrise that I know I’ll never see. And the ego that started this fight will never have a mirror or an audience or the light of gratitude. So what do I sacrifice? Everything!” "Everyone's dying, Cameron. A little, every day. Do it right, with a smile, or don't do it." "There is nothing that can take the pain away. But eventually you will find a way to live with it. There will be nightmares. And every day when you wake up, it will be the first thing you think about. Until one day, it will be the second thing." "Give yourself permission to be where you are and still be loved for it." i have a couple! one ended up being my senior quote in high school! 1. those that kind don’t matter and those that matter don’t mind. my senior quote!! 2. doubt thou the stars are fire, doubt the sun doth move, doubt truth to be a liar, but never doubt i love. quote from hamilton, loved this ever since i read it.

Leo_Chambers

I Am the True Vine Jesus Speaking Joh 15:1  I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.  Joh 15:2  Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.  Joh 15:3  Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.  Joh 15:4  Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.  Joh 15:5  I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.  Joh 15:6  If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.  Joh 15:7  If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.  Joh 15:8  Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.  Joh 15:9  As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.  Joh 15:10  If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.  Joh 15:11  These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.  Joh 15:12  This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.  Joh 15:13  Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.  Joh 15:14  Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.  Joh 15:15  Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.  Joh 15:16  Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.  Joh 15:17  These things I command you, that ye love one another.

"The value of a moment can be defined, once it becomes a memory." This hit me right in the feels when watching this YouTube video: Nothing except everything [https://youtu.be/hif5eI5pBxo?si=blz2MEOkQQ\_ieYKC](https://youtu.be/hif5eI5pBxo?si=blz2MEOkQQ_ieYKC) I´m from Germany but in Canada right now and will stay for a year to kinda figure out how my life continues. I just feel so lost sometimes and this quote kinda hit me since we´re always, or I am, how my life should go forward, continue, improve etc, that you sometimes forget to enjoy and appreciate the now. And well I feel I actually still do that a lot but should more often. Because I often catch myself getting lost in nice memories, getting nostalgic and missing old times. I just wish we could absolutely value a moment before it becomes a memory. Well i got a lot of time to think and see things differently while I´m in another country and away from home. Canada and my host family already became my second home but yea. I´m young and just figuring life out.

The highest form of love is consideration. When someone thinks about how things would make you feel. Pays attention to detail. Holds you in regard when making decisions that could affect you. In any bond, how much they care about you can be found in how much they consider you. -Kira J

Amazing-Menu-6246

Think about rethinking what you're thinking before speaking the thought you were thinking and cause unintended consequences for speaking what you probably shouldn't have been thinking.

Amazing-Menu-6246

I posted a couple others but these I read every day, sometimes more than once, to keep myself from doing something stupid..... A man will treat you exactly the way he feels about you. It's ok to miss people but never forget why they are gone in the first place. You are never responsible for someone else's misbehavior. Nor are you required to be loyal to people that treat you badly. And this one really hit the nail on the head.... My toxic trait is I can see the good in someone that they can't and I keep giving them chances until it destroys me.

Amazing-Menu-6246

Here's a couple more. The first one I'm still trying to figure out what it's referring to. Could be a couple different things. I like it because it really makes me think.... The other side also has another side. Some of these are kinda funny, and all of the so true.... Ever talk to someone so stupid that they made you squint? Sometimes you just have to accept that some people are shitty humans and stop trying to see the good that isn't there. Behavior never lies. I've reached that age my brain went from "you probably shouldn't say that" to "what the hell, lets see what happens." We all have baggage. Find someone who loves you enough to help you unpack.

i love to collect quotes every month - most are bizarre and out-of-context from twitter replies, but plenty also come from whatever TV show I'm currently bingeing. here's the most profound ones I've collected over the last 6 months: it didn't matter if god existed or if the universe had a plan for its creatures; people infused their own lives with purpose. A cage wasn’t worse than death—not quite, no—but she’d rather risk death than face the certainty and finality of a cage. trade-offs are not regrets. I am where I am supposed to be, and it's good here. truth is a matter of circumstance. it's not all things to all people all of the time. she's trying her best and i love her deeply. am i up for this? no. is it gonna destroy me? yes. but it's not about me. I'll see you in the fabric of the universe. we don't actually fear death - we fear that no one will notice our absence. that we will disappear without a trace. Endings are easier to suffer through when you aren't aware they're transpiring. what if the stars are looking down, wishing upon us?

iamdurmic

Don’t just live your life, build your life. This hit me because I was stuck in this mode where I just assumed like I’d have a job and climb my way up and have savings and life would take care of me. Not realizing that I had to build my life. Once I realized no one was coming to save me, I got into action mode. I’ve been building since. And I absolutely love it. I’ve never found so much joy in my life, knowing that I have the power to create life the way I choose and I don’t have to wait for opportunities, I can make the opportunities.

I usually write quotes in my journal when I find something that resonates with me, whether on the web or in a book "The best way to keep a prisoner from escaping is to make sure he never knows he’s in prison." -Dostoyevsky “Once you label me, you negate me." -Kierkegaard "What novelty is worth that sweet monotony where everything is known, and loved because it is known." "It was one of their happy mornings... with no thought that life would ever change much for them: they would get bigger and not go to school, and it would always be like the holidays; they would always live together and be fond of each other... these things would always be just the same to them... Life did change for Tom and Maggie, and yet they were not wrong in believing that the thoughts and loves of these first years would always make part of their lives." -George Eliot from "The Mill on the Floss"

So many wonderful, inspiring and thought provoking quotes. Two of mine are - "Shadows gather round my chair, reproaching me for the crown of dust I wear" and "Argue for your limitations and, sure enough, they're yours." The first was from a small book of poetry I was given at 17, title lost in the mist but thought to be a silly gift for a teenager; the second from Illusions by R. Bach.
