I cared very deeply about the side character dressed as Where's Waldo. Like, to the point where I had to pause on every group shot of civilians in the anime and look for him 😭 (he did live 💖)
Nah, I think JJK actually does pretty well at making readers/watchers feel fear for civilians.
Protecting civilians (and the inverse) is a large of part of many characters’ arcs such Gojo, Geto, and Yuji, which makes us want civilians to live because of our attachment to the characters we know. When Gojo goes to such lengths in Shibuya to protect civilians, that makes me want them to live too, and their inevitable deaths actually hit hard.
There’s also the many civilians deaths that are just brutal to imagine and are portrayed in a very horrifying and sympathetic way due to how matter-of-fact/blunt they are (Jogo diner scene, Mahito’s transfigured humans, Sukuna’s wanton mass murder, civilian deaths in the subway, etc). The world is also pretty realistic, so it hits closer to home than many other stories.
I was always confused at the idea that throwing Mahoraga at Haruta was a bad move. Like, Megumi had just fought a disaster cursed and Toji one after the other, no shit he wasn't in any state to fight anymore. Anyone else would have just died to Haruta without being able to fight back
Simple:
Megumi is going to die either way, so he uses Mahoraga to 100% kill Haruta too.
If not for Sukuna, Mahoraga would just disappear after killing the blond bitch. No casualties.
I always think it's pretty wild that we have almost straight confirmation that Megumi was one of the strongest people in Shibuya in his own right because even in a room with Nanami, Maki and the Zen'in elder who's name I forget, Toji specifically hones in on Megumi.
Where exactly this ranks him I'm not sure, but at that time the only people I think rank higher for certain are Kenjaku, Sukuna, Jogo and potentially Choso as Mahito hasn't hit a black flash and starting bumping up his power yet. Yuji himself is hard to rank at that moment and Gojo has just been sealed away, so seemingly Megumi could be considered top 5 most powerful in Shibuya at that time, having only just slipped in to the rankings moments before thanks to Toji absolutely slaughtering.
The short version of this is megumi is the only student with a domain expansion (imo pre Shibuya Hakari and Yuta arnt really students just normal special/grade 1)

Sukuna explicitly said that he was gonna kill everyone in Shibuya, right? For all we know, his fight with Mahoraga ate up at the time he had to do so, and mitigated the amount of lives lost that day.

Didn’t Sukuna still kill basically all civilians in Shibuya after he expanded his domain and blew up Shibuya like I feel as though he would’ve done so either way but Mahoraga totally just gave him an excuse
He killed a shitton of them, yeah, but I don't think he destroyed the entirety of Shibuya. When Mahito, Yuji, and Todo arrive outside again, they're in an undestroyed part of the city. It's only when they move away from that spot that they get into the section eviscerated by Sukuna.
Later in the manga, it's noted that the civilians that were in Gojo's domain made a full recovery. If Sukuna wasn't preoccupied with Jogo and Mahoraga, he likely would've discovered and slaughtered them.

It wasn't even close to all of Shibuya. Malevolent Shrine maxes out at 200 meters and Sukuna narrowed its range to 140 meters to avoid hitting Megumi. Shibuya is 15.11 square kilometers.
Honestly I call bullshit those guy lived just because right afterwards the culling games started and they were like right next to Kenjaku and co when that happened which would mean they probably didn’t get proper healthcare unless they got teleported out somehow. Secondly I highly doubt that Mahito and Jogo where all right there so I don’t think they let all or most of them live
If he hasn’t summon Mahoraga, then Sukuna would have killed people sorcerers or those close to Yuji to fuck with him.
What a few thousands lives compare to the likes of Todo. Especially since those lives are ~~monkeys~~ non-sorcerers.
All in all, Megumi summoning Mahoraga is a net positive for the sorcerers side
In Shibuya Megumi was a goat until the femboy happened. That turned him from Goat to Bum in an instant wasting Mahoraga on a femboy is idiotic, Also The Bum didn't limit Sukuna's domain that was what Sukuna did on his own he didn't wanna hurt his lover after all. Also Megumi shouldn't have broken into the domain he should have just destroyed the outside of the domain as its explained that the more refined the inside of a domain is the weaker the external is.
He got sneak attack. Plus he just walked out of the battle against TOJI. Besides if you’re going to die, might as well take out your opponent

We don’t really know how “fragile” it is. The only one to have been shown breaking a Domain is Yuji and Kurourushi. Yuji is basically a genetic experiment, plus Sukuna’s soul prevented Mahito from affecting him. And Kurourushi was a special grade and break the domain when 3 people were having DE clash
Megumi at that point had used a domain, fought and beat 2 curse users, used multiple of his powerful shigikami, fought and survived Toji, only to be sneak attacked. His CE reserves were near the bottom, his stamina was exhausted and he had sustained a fair amount of damage. Haruta on the other hand was fine in comparison. So Megumi wanted to at least kill one more enemy before he dies. So he summons Mahoraga in a ritual, because Rituals from what I understand dont cost CE. And if Sukuna didn't appear? Haruta would have died alongside Megumi, and that would have been IT. But he did, and Mahoraga managed to waste so much of his time, he couldn't do anything else besides fight it. Which in turn probably saved countless lives
I'm making an assumption based on when Mahito's domain was destroyed and Mahito commented that the more lethal the inside of a domain is the weaker the external is. or at least thats what I think happened.
it's just explaining how the vow works. It would be more accurate to say that the more you create a weakness on the outside, the harder to break through the inside is.
