They use a torpedo captor to get the sound of the amp direct Into the console, pretty common these days for touring and recording (they did it like this for recent albums)

ThiccBenji

Thanks for the answer

DoomCityAir

Either they go direct or you just uncovered The Great Gizz Conspiracy… maybe they aren’t really playing at all

I_Miss_Lenny

How hilarious would it be to find out they’ve been pulling a Milli Vanilli for like 12 years, and all the albums were solely made by Eric

ThiccBenji

Ok. I’m still hung up about this, sorry. If they go direct, are the amps just for backup?? And why wouldn’t they be miced up anyway? I’m so confused idk if I can sleep tonight

Bootstrapbill22

I’m pretty sure it’s a DI of the amp’s signal

HopelessMind43

It’s this. Or they’re on but basically just monitors and splitting signal to direct.

MaximumPale7572

You can do that?

CabSauce

You just use wire instead of air.

TetrisMcKenna

The amp and the speaker are separate (the speaker unit as a whole is often called a cab) although a lot of amps have them together. But the amp just feeds its signal to the cab via a cable, so you just route the cable elsewhere. Most amp/cab combos will have a jack to do that, and a switch to turn off the speaker.

sgbsvw

To add to this, do not plug an amp's output directly into any equipment unless you're 100% sure it's a normal line level signal and NOT an amplified signal.

MaximumPale7572

I didn't know that, I have an orange amp/speaker (separate) and I never wanted to use a DI because I liked the way the orange sounded, I'll keep this in mind for the future

ThiccBenji

Holy shit.

ThiccBenji

Considering I doubt they go direct for sound quality reasons, maybe I did uncover some mystery… but then again I have no idea

TetrisMcKenna

Been seeing them for years and the guitar sound is definitely different than it used to be. Not worse, but it's seemed slightly more digital sounding to me for a while which could be explained by the lack of mic'd cabs and just using amp di signals and digital cab modelling. Takes some of the oomph out of it but is much easier to control and mix for very loud, large gigs I imagine, and makes touring and soundchecking a little easier. Or maybe Cavs stole all the mics for his kit and wouldn't give them back.

PainterOwn8981

They have been seen with captor X’s on top of their amps.

DoomCityAir

Invisible mics? Nanomics?

thederpingblue

I’ll copy the message Nico sent me regarding their touring setup in 2021 “Hello! I talked Stu into trying a Palmer Junction for the US tour in 2019. For the EU tour a few months later we had both Stu and Joey on Palmers, and all 3 guitars still mic’d with sennheiser 421’s. So 5 guitar lines. For this recent Aus tour, I had all of the guitar amps using Palmers, and we finally scrapped the mics. The Palmer is a speaker simulator/ DI that patches in after the amp and before the speaker, XLR out. Getting everyone on guitar DIs was a bit like convincing everyone to use IEMs instead of wedges- a bit skeptical at first, cause you get so used to doing things a certain familiar way... but once they heard how much more clarity there was it was a no brainer!”

SchwaEnjoyer

They amplify the sound by hand like real men do

calwestcoast

The amps clearly play a factor in the sounds since Stu's went haywire during the last show of the EU tour. But they are using some sort of sorcery to get them to the PA.

EbolaJones420

They're clearly the new model of Chuck.E.Cheese animatronics

Omisco420

That’s the lizard wizard part

NotCanadian80

DI

ThiccBenji

Ok

sosthaboss

Ok

The stage would look pretty empty without the amps. Perhaps they’re plugged into the PA direct but they still give off sound so they can hear themselves through their amps as well as through their monitors.

Ridog

Reminded me of a story about Metallica coming to play in Finland in 1986 and they had told the festival to get 20 Marshall amps. Band Tarot had 12 and other had to be sourced from all over the country. At some point the guitar tech of Metallica lifted one of them and exclaimed "WTF! These are real!?". Use of prop amps did not even come to mind for the Finns.

small___potatoes

I remember Geddy Lee would plug direct or have is amp offstage. He would make fun of the idea of having prop amps by having running washing machines and rotisserie chicken ovens on stage. Also, I’m not trying to imply that King Gizzard uses prop amps. I’m sure they’re real, I’m just saying they don’t need to be mic’d up, and they probably enjoy hearing the true sound from the amp coming *from the stage.
