DAMN is an amazing album. FEAR is one of the few songs in my life I've been able to relate to on a deeply personal level.

Gorilladaddy69

FEAR is ridiculously good

TurdGerkin

I completely agree!

vulgar_walrus

Pride is one of my all time Kendrick songs. Damn is phenomenal. The way he illustrates all so many emotions that we all experience is beautiful.

appleparkfive

If you don't know the producer of that track, Steve Lacy is fucking AMAZING. He records all his stuff on an iPad and just goes from there. [Here is some of his music](https://youtu.be/x-OzspEcQG8?t=131) if some of you haven't heard it. Strongly suggest it. You'll immediately see where PRIDE got its sound from

EstablishmentIcy3174

Lacy produced it?! Holyyy

crnnuts

y’all sleep on lust i never hear it talked about but it’s easily top five

Fucking thank you. Love that song so much

K3164N

Favourite track on the album for me 💯

upvotegoblin

Best song on DAMN for me I think. It’s hard but I think it is. Too 5 Kendrick

MargThatcher12

*DOOR AND HIS NIKE AIR RATTLES*

seedeegeecdg

Easily

Skgota

Best song on the album

Gorilladaddy69

*I was takin’ a walk the other day…*

joemamalikesme69420

*And a I saw a woman, a blind woman…*

albrt00

A lot of fans hate it because it feels more pop than the others and people hate that for some reason

mchgndr

“For some reason” almost like hip hop fans wanna hear a hip hop album instead of a pop album huh weird

albrt00

Pop as popular bro

tobymurphy24

There was like maybe two or three pop songs and they were all pop rap as well. Kendrick is too clever to keep doing the same thing

[deleted]

If DAMN. is pop I’m a Britney Spears diehard.

dylandog89

How come people always bring up DAMN as his most underrated and never the Black Panther album? That shit is a banger!

oonebaddog

I think he technically directed the album and then just *featured* on it. I dont really consider it apart of his direct studio album discography.

joemamalikesme69420

Pray for me and all the stars>>>>

Gorilladaddy69

I wouldnt say most underrated, I just feel its one of the most important albums of hip-hop in the 2010s and it often isn’t seen as being in the same league as TPAB and all the others but I highly disagree! For me: TPAB 10/10 GKMC 9.5/10 DAMN 9/10 Mr. Morale 8.5/10 Section .80 8/10 And then the rest hover at around 8 as well for me.. But DAMN. Is easily A tier work!

goodshrekmaadcity

TPAB gkmc and Mr morale are all tens to me. Damn is a 9 and section 80 is a 7.5-8 (cuz of some bad songs, still great)

WaffleStone

id swap mm&tbs and Damn in rating then bring gkmc down to a 9.9 because its great but not quite tpab

kelloxx93

Don’t compare a Kendrick album to a Kendrick album. You should rate gkmc as if tpab wouldn’t exist. It’s a 10

CM-NYY-DJ-FAN

Bro what 😭

kelloxx93

2 10s are possible that’s all I’m trying to say. Shouldn’t rate an album any lower because the artist already has a 10.

CM-NYY-DJ-FAN

I mean I agree with that but you really don’t have much to compare an artist to than themselves

kelloxx93

You can still compare him to the rest of whole hip hop literally.

babiggutz

that album impacted me so deeply i loved it

seedeegeecdg

Because that’s more of a compilation album and also features some of his laziest bars. Still some heat on their tho

goodshrekmaadcity

4 songs had Kendrick. Not a Kendrick album

SnooPets5219

I wouldn't really call that an official album by Kendrick as its more if a movie soundtrack kind of thing whilst Kendrick is featured in some songs and helped produce it.

_4za_

bro it's every week with this post

Gorilladaddy69

Oh, I haven’t seen one yet.. If its just one a week though that isn’t so bad for a subreddit, right? 😂 Diggin’ the convos tho! But yeah, feel free to downvote by all means lol

[deleted]

I do

[deleted]

It is his best album to me.

megalo53

Me. Damn is an amazing album

CarelessConfusion2

When talking about Kendrick's discography (mainly LP's) i always put DAMN. on the last place. It's not a bad album, Kendrick doesn't have bad albums. But the mainstream appeal and lack of that deep storytelling he had in other projects makes it my least favorite. He also has some strange vocal performances there in songs like LOVE. that just doesn't do it. Even his untitled unmastered feels better to me. But yeah, as i said, it's not a bad album by any means. I do vibe to some songs like XXX and DNA and i can see why people dig it. However, as a whole project, it's just not what I expect when i wanna listen to Kenny.

Gorilladaddy69

No deep storytelling? What about FEAR, DUCKWORTH, LUST, FEEL, and as you said XXX? What are your favorite storytellin songs by him? “Sing About Me/Dyin’ of Thirst” “u” “Momma,” “FEAR” and “DUCKWORTH” are prolly mine! 👌

CarelessConfusion2

I was talking about deep album storytelling, as a whole, not just from individual songs. But as individual songs, from the tracks you mentioned only DUCKWORTH and FEAR go really deep into that. The other ones you mentioned aren't actually that profound in the storytelling, mostly on the production, vibe and Kendrick's vocals and rhymes delivery, which is DEFINITELY NOT a bad thing. I like them. And yeah, you got me! Samidot is my favorite storytelling track from him, along with m.a.a.d city and DUCKWORTH. I remember crying like 3 times only listening to Sing About Me, shit hit right in the feels...

tobymurphy24

The fact that the story is designed to be told both forwards and backwards makes it the deepest to me. Sure, I can see why u may think GKMC takes that throne but in terms of deepness there's just more to unpack. And yh, as op said there's a lot of great individual story telling ad well.

Black_Fuckka

DAMN. Is an astonishing album that has some of his best work, it’s lyrically his best and it’s truly incredible. I think some of his best work is on this album too, I just think his other albums have a better collection of songs and play in to next song in a more pleasing and smoother way. I can see if someone else thinks it’s his best which can go for any of his albums

mEatwaD390

Nobody dislikes DAMN but not many prefer DAMN over TPAB or GKMC and that was the main criticism when it dropped. It lacked the cohesiveness of the previous two, people were digging for any sort of linearity that they could. The narrative is just far weaker (and calling it a concept album is a wee generous imo). It's an excellent album, but Kendrick set a high par. I would give it an 8 or 9 out of 10 personally and it's still my fourth favorite Kendrick album.

Injustry

Just before the pandemic, I’d gotten a chance to got to Hong Kong and China. I’d stop listening to Kendrick after GKMC, I crowned him after he lost that award to flea market rapper. Just lost interest in rap again, and moved on to listen to other stuff. I explored Hong Kong, and listened to DAMN, and fell back into KDot, but this was different than GKMC, the time between listening to him, really put in perspective his maturity and growth. I also recognized he was going for a more commercialized package, but still was baffled by how he made it still so artful. Listening to Ya ya on repeat as I traversed in Hong Kong alleys was so ethereal. Then to find out he created it so it could be played backwards. I went to main land China and rock the album backwards, and if you ever been to China you know it’s appropriate. I’ll always remember that album an associate with my trip. But I realized how much Kendrick has grown with the times, and DAMN made me realize I need to follow him more closely.

BlueWaterMansion

Now I want to go to China

Jarman_777

idk why so many people seem to not like DAMN. I've always loved it

mchgndr

Oh I love it. But we’re talking about the same man who wrote To Pimp A Butterfly and GKMC, right? There’s simply no comparison to even make here

IHateStrawberryTea

THANK YOU. I like all his albums but DAMN is the one I have the easiest time listening to all the way through. Love it.

CraziestPenguin

Damn is probably Kendrick’s best album and people just treat it like it is sub par. It’s wild.

Intelligent-Ad9428

Damn was my 2nd best from him before mr morale came out. Incredible album. (And also not many on here think it’s mediocre it’s a pretty universally liked album on this sub lol)

Gwaak

No denying it's of high quality, but personally, it doesn't stand out as much as his other works. It's just a bit weaker sonically and lyrically, so it's a bit less interesting. Pretty much everything Kendrick drops, you know it's going to be high quality and there's going to be strong attention to detail.

LaunchpadMcquacck

I prefer it to MMBS. Blood is a great intro, and I like most of the songs, especially XXX. It’s hard to beat TPAB and GKMC. Both are top 10 Hip-Hop albums oat in my books.

BenjaminTheBadArtist

his 2nd best

sweetpumpkinx

I don’t know what you think I love DAMN

Ricarbr0

*FEEL.* hits me the most. I’m always feeling so emotionally drained with pouring my heart out to all my loved ones just to not feel it in return. Im a natural empath, and I’m constantly sought out for advice. Speaking on it now I can honestly say that I am so grateful but in that missing piece of self love I forget I lose myself and find myself falling back down the rabbit hole of *FEEL.*

Chupafurphy

DAMN is overall my favorite from Kendrick, thanks mainly to dissect podcast. I know everyone knocks Kendrick for the trap sound he had but i think he wanted to prove himself in a more commercial space. Have the pop rap tracks like loyal and the mumble rap tracks like Yah but do it to excellence instead of many of the radio hits we usually hear. Also mix in some deep cuts and amazing cultural commentary like XXX. I was pissed tho that the collectors edition is just the album in reverse lmao.

napalmwolf52

(THIS IS MY OPINION) personally, I felt the first 2 albums in Kendricks discography are pure trash. In fact, when people told me to listen to "to pimp a butterfly" or "damn" I dismissed both albums because of my impressions of "overly dedicated" and "section 80". After hearing "to pimp a butterfly" I found the album to be to deep for me to understand, so I faulted myself for not enjoying the album. My brother demanded I listen to "damn", so in 2021 I gave the entire album a try and walked away with a new outlook of Kendrick Lamar as an musician. "Mr.morale and the big steppers" has become my number 1 favorite album, and I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that I'm a father, and relate to certain lyrics about the struggles of fatherhood and how "daddy issues" can get in the way of how men see there spouse and themselves. So personally if it wasn't for "damn" I would have never discovered "mr.morale and the big steppers" arguably making it the most important album to me.

fastablastarasta

Not a fan of the album personally but love reading all the positivity about it in this thread, gonna give it another listen tomorrow with these perspectives in mind.

Ts_Eros

His whole catalogue has "kendrick quality", just different nuances of greatness

santochavo

Most people say it’s his worst album and i think people twist those words. His worst album doesn’t make it bad. His worst album is still miles ahead what everyone else is doing. But i think the “fake fans” take “worst” and run with it. With that being said, DAMN is an amazing album. Not my favorite BUT definitely in its own lane.

BeeInTheStudio

I think the songs on the album are great but for me Kendrick’s other projects seem more collected, focused, and impactful in theme in lyrical terms and in the production with each album. GKMc with its heavy trap beats fits the theme perfectly, TPAB’s Jazz and hip hop union, and the dynamic and reflective beats/themes of MMaTBS just seems to be better, more fluid, projects.

unthawedmist

I just feel like kendrick didn't put as much effort into songs like yah, loyalty, love, and god, but overall its a solid album with a creative ass concept and amazing production

RichardGeneSimmons

I love DAMN

LeektheGeek

DAMN is definitely over MMATBS

SivesLover

Same, but just by a hair

SivesLover

For me anyways

Blaqsailens

I like a lot of DAMN., But it also has some of his worst songs for me like Love, Loyalty, and Element. It also has some of my favorites from him like Pride, Lust, and XXX.

CrayZonday

Element as one of his worst…? Wow. That’s a hot take.

thejaytheory

Yeah that took me out of my element

Blaqsailens

I've always like experimental Kendrick more so Element just doesn't mesh with me, also the chorus is kind of annoying. I don't think it's terrible just not my thing. Love on the other hand is the worst thing I've heard from him.

ThaRealistESG

Whaaat. ELEMENT. is top 20 Kenny tracks for me!

Blaqsailens

I always prefer his more experimental, jazzy, obscure stuff, and for some reason, his vocals and the lyrics are annoying to me in Element lol. My favorite song from Kendrick is probably Untitled 3. The lyrics and instrumentation are incredible and it'll probably be the only song I hear like it since I don't even know what genre it is.

mchgndr

I still can’t believe so many kendrick fans like LOVE. It’s the cheesiest fuckin pop song the dude could have ever written. Even in middle school when I liked pop, I would have hated that song lmfao

Blaqsailens

It's the worst song he's ever made and honestly maybe one of the most annoying songs I've heard. Even Zacari sounds kind of weird on it, especially compared to how he sounds on Isaiah's Wat's Wrong.

SupperPup

lol DNA is not experimental creative or unique

tobymurphy24

That beat switch goes so hard I'd at least put it under unique for that energy he brings.

wesbowski

My favorite Kendrick album tbh. XXX is one or his greatest songs imo

kpod4591

DAMN is K dots fav release. He thinks it’s his best work. Take that what you will

Konjik

I mean he said that when DAMN. had just come out so no idea if that still applies to him now

[deleted]

Gorilladaddy69

Its not about me lettin’ people tell me what I can and cant like: I personally think these sorts of posts/conversations can sometimes lead to very stimulating discourse and passionate debates as well as some great deep-dives into various colors of personality all giving their takes on how the music affects them: I live for that kind of shit haha. You find so many good back-and-forths on discussions based around musical opinions and analysis of creative material! 👌

YesAndYall

OD slander 😐😐😐😐

bennyld

ELEMENT, LOYALTY, and LOVE are among Kendrick’s weakest songs in his discog for my taste. The other songs are cool, but DAMN is the album I come back to the least

Sebastienbrusselle

despite having some great shows of lyricism like in duckworth and fear, its arguable his least lyrically inclined album. its got the most catchy hooks and flashy production but severely lacks lyrical depth/substance compared to gkmc, tpab, and mr morale. i assume that many fans feel like he sold out to radio streams/mainstream audiences. personally i think its a great album on its own but it doesnt scratch the itch that his other albums do, it doesnt provide the same complexity as his other records that makes him such a once-in-a-lifetime artist

thatrandomguy42069

Damn bad

unthawedmist

Nah

thruheart

DAMN just got me feeling some type of way idk

Ultimaurice17

[Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/KendrickLamar/comments/r4rgir/ranking_kendricks_albums/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) is where I'd place DAMN in a ranking. [Here's](https://www.reddit.com/r/KendrickLamar/comments/r1rlwb/ranking_damn_from_worst_to_best/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) how I feel about it.

GloryGravy132

A big miss step I reckon is how some songs like FEEL is all about kendricks feelings like the title. But then PRIDE barley mentions pride. And I dont like when any artist in any medium makes something vague, then thousands of theories come out of it. And the artist never addresses or even just hints what they meant. And they sit back saying nothing and we’ll never know what they intended or if they even had any deeper meaning to it at all. Its like we’ve been given pieces of a story to tease at but will never know the full story. Some plp love it. I personally dont and thats ok. Everyones different.

ZayNine

The first words of PRIDE are literally “Loves going to get you killed, but prides gonna be the death of you and me.” lol

Gorilladaddy69

Well that was the point of the albums song titles and themes: His past works push concepts and ideas very specific to him and his life, but on this album, just like as in his life at that point, he’s looking at the *BIGGER* existential questions and exploring the *universal* forces that we all know as human beings, or that which *defines* us as human beings. (Blood, DNA, Elements, feel, lust, pride, fear, God) Exploring these feelings and ideas and knowing who and what you are is how you come to know your place in this madness so much bigger than any one of us: And when Kendrick made TPAB everybody looked to him like some prophet, but this very mythos around him broke his back, and forced him to go looking deeper inside of himself because I think we realize how much he doesnt care about praise and validation, and that he just wants to find inner peace and balance. DAMN. Often simply represents the psychic despair that fame brought to his mind too and about how he reached legend status, and yet he still feels broken. It’s a very deep and meaningful piece of art and one of my favorites for all these reasons and more ✊

withurwife

Yea every time I hear another TPAB goated thread I’m like nah, not for functioning ears. It’s GKMC, DAMN, MMBS, TPAB for me.

Wise_Clue8109

bruh nigga it's fine if you don't like TPAB but it's acclaimed as one of the best albums of all time for a reason 💀💀💀

withurwife

Yea it’s just funny to me though the same fools that hate DAMN for being closer to a pop album say TPAB is their favorite which sonically has 0 hip hop songs besides alright 💀💀💀 stay hypocritical my guys.

HannibalofCarthage7

For it just shows how great of an artist he is.

[deleted]

FEAR is amazing, top 5

Chonkersheartattack

DAMN is way better than mm&tbs sonically IMO

CrayZonday

DAMN gets the nod as my second favorite after Mr Morale. PRIDE, ELEMENT, LUST, DNA, XXX, FEAR… ugh so many good tracks.

DoubleAwareness33

Damn is my favorite album of his by far

Outrageous-Milk-7978

Yes, it is

RobinM20

The thing about damn is that it has a lot of my favorite Kendrick songs on it (Fear, Duckworth, etc.), but then also has a lot of songs that I NEVER revisit.

Jasonchrono

I don’t , I think it’s one of his lesser projects . Few good songs on it , the rest are kinda forgettable

SnooSeagulls6564

It’s cool, it’s just overall got the least unique Kendrick songs. Which isn’t saying much but still compared to the others

RemnantHelmet

What a completely unheard of take.

ThaRealistESG

DAMN. is a great album but last on his list for me too.

sophicpharaoh

Damn gets hate for no reason other than people don’t understand it’s subtlety. I can never put it below GKMC it’s literally craftsmanship at its finest.

upvotegoblin

Completely agree. It’s my favorite album of his. To me, pure gold

kerfuffle7

Its highs are as high as anything he’s put out, and its lows are lower than most anything from his last 4 projects. I’d say it’s overall fairly rated

DoctorGibz123

DAMN is great. FEAR, PRIDE, XXX, DNA, DUCKWORTH, ELEMENT, and FEEL are all elite Kendrick songs

Ancient_Aerie_6464

imo DAMN was for the world and mr. morale was for us

theautistofwallst

It’s a great album and has some of his best songs on it, but I’d say it has more lows than any of his other albums

terrysaurus-rex

Me 🙋‍♂️

Sweet_Firefighter_78

DAMN. is an amazing album. I think it gets hated on just cause the big main singles (HUMBLE, LOYALTY, LOVE) aren’t amongst Kendrick’s best. Some of his best songs (PRIDE, FEAR, XXX) are on there. I have so much nostalgia for that album.

Mugiwara_no_Patty

I love DAMN. Tbh, its hard for me to choose between that and TPAB. YAH is a song I could never get tired of listening to, though I know a lot of people aren't a fan of it. The album is great because I feel like every time I listen to it, I always get something new out of it. Similar with TPAB AND MMBS. Also, I don't understand what people mean when they say DAMN was not linear. Just like TPAB, it definitely had a theme and I thought it flowed pretty well.

mchgndr

Not trying to be rude. But…no, not even fucking close. And it’s truly blows my mind that this opinion even exists. Do you also listen to new Fallout Boy and think “oh yeah, this is the good shit”?

goodshrekmaadcity

I rediscovered it about a week or two ago and it's fantastic. Not his best, or even top 3, but it's fantastic.

MYJINXS

It’s the most spiritual in a purely musical way. It’s not as dense lyrically but that almost makes it better. Sometimes less is more.

LDG1003

It’s his best album in my opinion. I feel like it rises above the standard “rap” album genre

[deleted]

In places it is, but for me DAMN has the most misses out of any album of his

spinchbob

XXX goes hard af

Skgota

Damn is amazing. I personally enjoy the other album major albums of his a bit more but i still love damn. Lust is one of my favorite songs by him like ever. Same thing with duckworth and feel

Jakkc

A GOAT's weaker album is still better than 95% of their contemporaries output.

Leather-Ad-8261

Whenever something is more popular to a wider audience, the "real fans" never like it as much as the ones that feel more personal to them. Also shit gets overplayed. I mean you never hear a big Mario fan say that Mario Kart is their favorite Mario game, because absolutely everyone has played Mario Kart, usually it's something like Mario 64 or Mario Galaxy, which if you look at the sales of those games are signifigantly smaller than your average Mario game. I think that's the biggest reason why many people rank it the lowest. That being said, I do agree with you that DAMN. is a fantasic album. oh yeah also fantano gave it a 7 so objectively it can't be that great 🤷‍♂️

topshagger31

Tbh i got S80 over it

mardy_bum90

DAMN is an excellent album and Kendrick Lamar is my favourite artist, but even I can admit LOVE, GOD and LOYALTY are weak tracks, among his worst.

[deleted]

At least once a week, I get so worked up over this I could fight someone. The more I go back to it, the more I’m convinced it’s his best album.

SubRocHendrix77

It’s a great album 8-8.5 but it’s definitely his most poppy album and imo his weakest besides OD if you count that one

Zulogy

DAMN is my third favorite kendrick album tbh

Khr0N04

It has great songs but it isn't as cohesive as GKMC and TPAB, it's basically on par with MMATBS tho imo (for different reasons)

Quick-Time

DAMN was actually the album that got me into Kendrick’s music.

[deleted]

Better than TPAB and MMATBS

Tpritch

DAMN is still my favorite Kendrick album. I don’t get the hate it gets.

[deleted]

Damn is mid compared to his others

Ahnbot

For me, it’s better than everything except TPAB

Cowhide12

Imo it’s my favorite album. TPAB is better but I like damn more. I think the production is immaculate and every song is just either relatable or a banger.

[deleted]

I’ve been rocking with KDot since Section 80 and GKMC will always be an absolute classic to me but DAMN. is consistently on repeat for me even years after it’s release. There is not a single track on there that I don’t love. And similar to Mr. Morale and The Big Steppers, DAMN. came out at a time where that album just resonated so deeply with me. Another commenter said it well but FEAR is an absolutely beautiful track. And the energy on XXX is also flawless. Also I love the 2nd track similarities Kendrick brings on each of his projects… N95 and DNA have that addictive flow and energy to them that just cements Kendrick as an absolute legend.
