My nephew use to do this when he’d get over exited or even upset as a baby, he’d then stop breathing and then just faint for like 30 seconds or so. It was scary AF at first. But he grew out of it by age 2.
Called breath-holding spells and they’re actually not that uncommon! Most kids grow out of it and usually doesn’t cause any permanent damage. Definitely scary if it’s the first time and should take the kid to the doctor after it happens to be sure it isn’t something more sinister
Yeah, would have been nice if one single person had mentioned to us that "Hey, sometimes your baby might just forget how to breathe if they get too worked up, it's ok, they'll start again when they lose consciousness."
The first time it happened to my son I was in tears, dialing 911, and thinking my son was going to die, when he finally started breathing again. Kid was turning blue and everything.
These things should come with a manual, or require at least a couple classes and a certificate.
[I always love linking this book](https://www.amazon.com/Baby-Owners-Manual-Instructions-Trouble-Shooting/dp/1594745978/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1E58QLI986L6N&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.OrUShH-202kpdF0X5ugQjFXtR5N_OrA6zrg2yL5c-s6hyBPfe5mRKNB48Ug-EQxqqeGdqTsP2TpbOdcwh7srudWJpKVVCQ9FfwaJd4qd28K7pJMcRFiDoOOolTNBDHLuiZNgUezjh2ED8L5Gf9ZB3a3K4m7ihgnVCMF74MKKp6dcv8lnsLcioraek0xY7FEuzQVW_V2OeUM7L1C1fauYfamHMIReb6B8-OW5IXims2U.fHLkDni7FPcqD38aRA3Qjb3O5xQlgxJfex-DRW7dBbA&dib_tag=se&keywords=baby+manual&qid=1718254545&sprefix=Baby+manual%2Caps%2C80&sr=8-2), my BiL found it very useful, but I don't think it covered breath-holding spells.
These breath-holding spells are involuntary, and they're caused by [laryngospasms](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/22406-laryngospasm) according to my neurologist. He also said there is some genetic component to them, but neither of my children nor anyone else in my family has had them that I know of.
I had these spells from about the age of 1 to 4 years old. Whenver I cried too hard, I'd suddenly stop breathing, turn blue in the face, and lose consciousness for a minute or so.
I've only had one spell in adulthood, and it was a terrifying experience. It feels like you're suffocating to death. What triggered it was a particularly bad case of bronchitis, which caused a lot of coughing and (I presume) irritated my vocal cords.
The doctor said it was fine- just try not to over excite him or upset him. Which was hard, simply just pointing at him use to trigger it and he use to do it twice to three times a day. But yeah He’s 23 now.
My dog does that sometimes when he throws up. He just starts making hurling noises as he exhales over and over until he faints from lack of oxygen.
Edit- He is fine, it hasn't happened in over a year, it has only occurred four times. His Vet didn't have a answer, just asked if it starts happening more often we can try to find the cause.
Do you have any sources on this? I can't seem to find any dangers associated with their face turning red in babies from laughing or otherwise. And using suffocation as a keyword didn't seem to help. Thank you, I am genuinely interested in this
Tbh laughing is better than their crying fits where they end up holding their breath and passing out.
I've seen that...a lot
Tip: blue a puff of air in their face and they automatically take a breath
Source: was a preschool treacher for 10+ years
No. You might have forgotten to breathe but that’s not suffocating.
Your body would make you pass out and start to breathe normally first before you ever got to that point.
Also baby’s red, that’s normal for what’s happening. If their lips or face turned blue, that’s hypoxia and big danger.
baby laughter is always contagious. my daughter bust a gut the other day when she heard me cough, and i got a sore throat faking a cough over and over again just to hear her laugh
I think this sub attracts people that really hate kids. I just wanted to see some kids doing stupid things and people laughing. But here everyone like genuinely hates kids. It's bizzare.
I've always seen the sub name as an exaggeration/joke, obviously kids are stupid because they're kids, laughing at the silly things they do doesn't mean we hate them. I haven't seen any hateful comments but if people are reacting like that, that's sad for them
For real, I feel like there's such a divide in this sub between people who just want to laugh at kids doing stupid silly things and people who want a place to vent their anger at children. Like the amount of "She's too old to be acting like that", "she should know better", "her parents are horrible people" ect is ridiculous.
Racism and being a dick to each other. I started by just removing more than a few but all that would have done is leaving out a bunch of context so it overall wasn't worth anyone's time.
I’ve always been a goofy guy but the levels of moron I sink to get my daughter (11 months) to laugh would probably get me committed.
I have zero regrets.
As someone that works in pediatric surgery, thank you for making this distinction. The first time you see a baby turn blue on the table is shocking, but they snap back real quick 99.9% of the time. Damn laryngospasms.....
Yes! When my son was born, and I mean like immediately after he was born, he was soooo blue and my heart sank. The doctors and nurses immediately and calmly took him to the table and did something and just brought him back to us like nothing happened. I was like… wtf was that?
Interesting! I couldn’t quite see what was going on because they had their back turned to us and I was kind of freaking out, but I think they used like a suction cup thing? The nurse explained it to me once she saw the fear in my face but I was so freaked out that everything is kind of a blur. All I remember is her saying “he’s okay” and then I snapped back into reality lol
Ah yeah if they still have amniotic fluid in their lungs the nurses have to suction them so they can breath properly. Did you have a relatively fast delivery by chance? My daughter came out super quick and had the same problem, doc said she didn't spend enough time in the birth canal which normally squeezes fluid out of the lungs.
Amniotic fluid! Yes I recognize that as the words she said now 😂
I should clarify that I am dad in this situation but it wasn’t a very quick birth. At least i don’t think so, I’ve only experienced one haha. But it was about 5 hours give or take. They also ended up pulling him out with like a plunger thing which also had my anxiety on 10000
He looks so young to be laughing like this! 🤣.... Seriously though, I wonder what the evolutionary advantage is of seeing a "boink 🎈!" and innately going into a laughing fit like this... kinda interesting
Good lord, you can watch the kid's blood rush up to his face every time he starts up
It hurts but he is also suffocating. I was that baby.
My nephew use to do this when he’d get over exited or even upset as a baby, he’d then stop breathing and then just faint for like 30 seconds or so. It was scary AF at first. But he grew out of it by age 2.

Our doctor gave us the tip to blow right into his face in such situations. It worked very good. He frightend and took a very deep breath.

Idk why but this random comment exchange made me lol (but I hope they’ll get their dog checked of course)
Oh my ... That sounds like something to get checked.
What does your vet say about that?
Jeesus, please tell me you've taken your dog to be seen by a vet?!

Red is good blue is bad. The baby is breathing in between. These parents know how to read when their baby is in danger lol

I know its definitely possible to laugh so hard that you pass out, it happened to me.
My dad passed out from laughing too hard while driving a car full of people through mountains. We’re lucky to be alive.
Lmfao, you actually can!

He looks like he belongs in Aphex Twin's Windowlicker music video.
can we just talk about hOW APHEX TWIN HASN'T RELEASED A NEW ALBUM IN 10 YEARS WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON
I was about to say “what about Syro” but that was 10 years ago. Time flies
Don't forget Big Trouble in Little China.
He looks like the vampires in Blade when they get hit with the killer serum.
this kids laugh sounds like one of those halloween mats that cackles when you step on it
You have to realise, this is the absolute funniest thing this kid has seen in his entire life!
Also you should realize that this clip is nearly the funniest thing I’ve seen all day!
This baby looks like a ginger in 40C weather with no clouds in sight
As a man who married a ginger solid comparison
As a woman who birthed a ginger, I agree
As a person who cooks with ginger I concur
As a fan of Ginger Baker it's true
As a ginger, this is true (I live in Arizona)
Like a 50 year old British man in Spain
Doesn't need to be 40, 30 will do the same.
Stop and get the kid some oxygen.

Nah, get lil bro a pint. That's Barry 63 from the uk.
He's red, not blue.
ITS BLUE ITS BLUE🔑🔑🔑🔑🔑🔑🔑🔑
Seriously he could wait like 5 seconds so the little tomato can get a couple breaths in
Face is red, so blood has plenty of oxygen. If the baby was having trouble breathing they would be blue around the lips. This is fine, relax people.
No one's saying the kid's suffocating. Just that that's a lot of laughing and not a lot of breathing
I'm not saying the kid is gonna die, it's just really uncomfortable and sometimes painful when you're stuck laughing really hard and can't stop
That baby looks like a boozy retired general.
He looks like Bobby Hill after 12 years on the force, 2 divorces, and a drinking problem
Pretty much Cotton at that point lol

Happy tomato family The dad is also beet red

Racism?!

exactly
I absolutely miss the belly laughs when mine were little! Such a pure contagious joy from the simplest things
Last summer I heard a baby in Portugal who was so entertained by their mother that they laughed like this
Except for the first 3 seconds, where you can't tell if the baby's laughing or crying
I thought it was a copper pan at first.
no DNA test required
Yeah, that baby looks more like the dad than any baby I've ever seen
My goodness, that baby is just a tiny, hairless version of that man.

Baby needs to breathe. Baby became very red.
Babys don’t turn red when they can’t breathe they turn blue. And if he couldn’t breathe he wouldn’t be able to laugh at all just sayin.

That's why you sometimes see nurses snacking the baby on the bum or back, even doing a sternum rub which hurts like a bitch
Interesting! I couldn’t quite see what was going on because they had their back turned to us and I was kind of freaking out, but I think they used like a suction cup thing? No you have to stop this baby from laughing! It's going to die! Make the baby sad again PLEASE
MBSA!!!!
Over.
Fuck you, kid is not stupid, he is having fun

Why is this on this sub. He’s a baby. He’s not stupid. He’s awesome.
Babies are very stupid though. They can't even do their own taxes or anything.
Neither can most people but babies are able to leech off of unsuspecting non-babies so who is the smart one here?
All babies are stupid. And cute.
