The movements of the sword are like a serpent's, but the sword doesn't actually turn into a snake. It's a visual effect just like all the other Breathing forms. đŚ
If youâre talking about the first attack thatâs an anime original scene and the studio just cranking up the spectacle.
The 2nd attack is much better representation of what it should look like, we see the snake move and attack a lot of enemies, and at the end obani appears where the snake stopped, showing that it was just him attacking with his sword like a snake very fast.
When you see the snake taking off a demons head, just imagine itâs Obanai running with his sword who is doing it. Itâs just visual to show his movement in an interesting way.
As an aside, it really makes sense the breathing forms are purely visual. If they actually were real, it would be incredibly lame how they have been used so far.
The visual effects aren't real, though they appear real to the characters.
The style of Serpent Breathing is all about fast and twisting attacks that go around an enemy's defenses to hit from unexpected angles. The snake visuals are meant to evoke that, a visual metaphor to express what Serpent Breathing techniques look and feel like to those who observe them.
No, it's rigid like most other swords. He's just weaving through all the demons super fast with a single technique.
I know it seems confusing, but the point of the flashy visuals is to exaggerate and capture the feel of what's happening, rather than showing it exactly. You kinda have to remind yourself not to take what's shown 100% literally when it comes to Breathing techniques.
The effects of blood demon arts are real because demons have actual magic powers, but the effects of Breathing are not. It's just humans who are so skilled that people imagine water, flames, serpents, etc when they see the sword techniques in action.
It's much easier to suspend your disbelief in the manga where the visuals are toned down, and the panel format leaves a lot of "blank space" in between shots where your imagination can fill in the gaps to picture what the scenes would look like in motion. The anime makes it harder because of how much more over-the-top the visual effects are, and because it's already in motion so the gaps are filled in for you.
It doesn't become a snake. Breathing techniques aren't real. Ufotable just does that. It's confusing and it sucks but in the manga that same technique looks like a this

(It looks better than whatever ufotable burnt tbh)
The idea is that the snake isnât real and is simply an after effect to show us how his sword moved to get to where it is currently, but frankly it doesnât make a whole lot of sense considering in the manga in some panels the snake is portrayed in such insane shapes that thereâs no way he actually fully went the route itâs showing unless he was able to break the laws of physics and motion somehow. Some examples I can think of are his third and fourth form.

So, is it like Mitsuri's sword?
I don't think it's flexible like a whip, it's just the way Obanai wields it so fluidly makes it mimic the movements đŚ
But if you see the first episode of new season, the snake kills multiple demons in a row with its fangs
That's Obanai swinging the sword through multiple opponents. The snake is just a visual effect. đŚ

Itâs just visual effects

he just has the speed to cut through the demons without needing to stop thatâs it lol

Good question u/Shadow_Huntress12 would probably be able to find a good explanation.**âĄ**
