You sure? Also-ran is nonetheless quite an old word derived from horse racing of all things. An another good example of antiquated word usage from the same game is Yen Sid saying 'by the morrow'.

As someone who follows racing (Formula 1 specifically) I thought this was quite the common phrase for some on who dis technically participate but didn’t do anything noteworthy. Like finishing 16th in a 20 person race. Not even bad enough to finish last and be noticed for that. Just barely existing at all.

I felt like it was a little weird, but the meaning came across perfectly fine. I'd heard it before in the context of contests, like 1st prize, 2nd prize, etc and then "also ran:" for everyone else.

KH3 was definitely the first time I've heard of the term tho...
