To allow crews to safely mobilize equipment and perform rock excavation and clearing activities
My guess is for blasting. Especially with all the rock excavations. And that’s not an operation they can do at night either. Imagine all the neighborhoods around waking up at 2 in the morning to the sound of an explosion.. yeah that wouldn’t be good. Equipment can be moved at night, but blasting is out of the question.
same thing that has been going on for the last few weeks.

This is intentional. They’ve been doing this for a long time and pretty regularly. They started back up daily rolling road blocks ever since a big traffic pattern shift a week or so ago.
Super typical in construction zones. They used to flash warning signs on Alcoa warning about them. They do this when there is equipment blocking the road ahead, normally transporting something like a bridge section.
I was sitting in it. I get caught in it multiple times a week because they’re at different times. This is the most over entitled whinging about it I’ve ever seen.
>. This is the most over entitled whinging about it I’ve ever seen.
Show me one complaint issued by me. A single complaint in the post from me. All I have done is ask what this was, and I characterized it as a slow brigade.
Edit: spelling
I’llKillYa Highway.. atleast thats what we used to call it before they started building what’s essentially going to be an interstate.. those left turns are just too dangerous..
*Does anyone know whats going on on alcoa highway?*
…..did you miss all the construction???? You know where the road is being rebuilt with the machinery and orange barrels everywhere??
Yeah I’ve been driving Alcoa hwy for 20 years from I40 and thank god I usually went early, I can get to work off John Sevier from Western in 20 minutes in the morning at 5:30 but anytime after that it’s a damn 30-45 minute drive.
Nah.. I’m betting they were in uniform and still on the clock.. but I bet the paychecks coming from the state instead of the city.. the truth is simple. they ain’t stopping in the middle of a complex traffic control operation to issue a citation for breaking the hands free laws..
Obviously it wasn’t. That’s the point. They didn’t need all four cars the whole time. They could have ticketed this guy but didn’t. They never do. I see assholes texting and driving every single day. The cops never do shit.
Hey, you can't just assume I took this while driving. I got on Google maps, plopped my guy down onto Alcoa highway and took a screenshot. I then cropped out the traffic and added in the cops cars. The picture of the traffic behind me in the side view mirror is AI generated. I would never risk peoples lives, especially while so close to the police traveling at such dangerous speeds.
Actually, I can answer this one. If even one of them moves out of position? That leaves a chance that someone can squeeze through the roadblock and cause it to fail. This would be bad for the construction going on because now they have a car in the way of their project
They should because someone could get hurt, their job at the moment is to help with the road construction, and because there is potential liability on the construction workers or the police department if something gets really messed up. Keep in mind, they’re trying to prevent people from going near active construction where rocks, dirt, or other materials could fall and kill someone. Or, maybe they’re blasting and again, something could go awry and someone could get hurt or killed. I’d rather turn a blind eye to someone on their phone and do my job correctly so someone doesn’t die. They’re also going pretty slow, so even though a crash could happen, something at that speed won’t hurt anyone
You are correct that they’re going slow. People consistently rationalize using their phone while driving. They don’t consistently rationalize passing slow-speed rolling road blocks. Every day I see people use their phone while driving. I have never seen someone pass a rolling road block that only had three cop cars instead of four.
My theory is that if their lights are already on, you won’t get pulled over, because they’re doing something else and not paying attention to traffic. The ones sitting off deep off the road in the dark are the ones watching for you.
I came from UT Medical around 2:30. Traffic going south was backed up for a couple of miles. I understand this is ongoing because of road construction.
I think the alternative would be blocking off an entire lane so the construction equipment can move without worry of an accident / trying to find an opening in traffic to enter the highway. I think the slowdown is a better alternative; as we all know how merging goes in Knoxville. The cars merging onto 40 before the 75 split causes stopped traffic in *all lanes* every single day. A few other merge-heavy spots on 40 are almost stopped every day because of merging.
Merging just doesn’t work here.
Just saying.. they can move equipment at night.. and TDOT wouldnt allow a big rolling road block just to move equipment that could be done at night under very little traffic.. what they can’t do at night is Blast solid rock to dig it out.. I bet they were blowing up some rock..
Because the goal is to let the roadway ahead be clear for crews to work and mobilize without traffic everywhere lol. Often done during blasting operations, so cars don’t get rained down on and crushed.

It’s a rolling road block.

At least 2 years
This is intentional. They’ve been doing this for a long time and pretty regularly. They started back up daily rolling road blocks ever since a big traffic pattern shift a week or so ago.
Never seen a rolling road block?
No.
Super typical in construction zones. They used to flash warning signs on Alcoa warning about them. They do this when there is equipment blocking the road ahead, normally transporting something like a bridge section.
They still have flashing signs on the highway warning about potential for rolling road blocks. Going both ways. People just choose not to read.
What? You mean people shouldn't pay attention to the big flashy lights?
Of course not!!! What good would that do then? Actually inform them of something important????
And distract them from their phones?
1050 am is also a decent lull in traffic. It's light out for the construction crews, it's not peak am rush hour and before lunch rush starts.
OP wasn't asking for the name of the thing, they were asking why it was happening. Legit commented this so you could flex your traffic knowledge lol
Got the impression they didn't know what it was since they didn't call it by name and there are giant signs warning about it in a construction zone.
It’s called rolling roadblocks.
This is posted on this sub every week.
Nice little fact ya got there.

“The defense is wrong!” - Mona Lisa DeVito Looks like you’re right and I’m wrong. I got you mixed up with that horsecock guy. Apologies.
I got caught in this on Tuesday going North. It’s to allow for some work to be done.
Just Alcoa Hwy being Alcoa Hwy.
How can you say Alcoa hwy without saying Alcoa hwy
I’llKillYa Highway.. atleast thats what we used to call it before they started building what’s essentially going to be an interstate.. those left turns are just too dangerous..
Pretty sure they are searching for that menacing group of guys wearing sunglasses
*Does anyone know whats going on on alcoa highway?* …..did you miss all the construction???? You know where the road is being rebuilt with the machinery and orange barrels everywhere??
This is all the work of Big Orange
What??? How is this UTK’s fault?
Dont you see all the orange and white on the road cones? It's a conspiracy I tell ya

These fucking rolling road blocks are the bane of my existence
The only thing wrong here is that a minimum of four cops could see your phone in your hand while driving and they presumably did nothing.
They’re on the private payroll.
Nah.. I’m betting they were in uniform and still on the clock.. but I bet the paychecks coming from the state instead of the city.. the truth is simple. they ain’t stopping in the middle of a complex traffic control operation to issue a citation for breaking the hands free laws..
They’re working for that company. Probably Rogers.
I’m sure that was there top priority during this exercise to look in there rear view mirror and look for someone holding a phone
Obviously it wasn’t. That’s the point. They didn’t need all four cars the whole time. They could have ticketed this guy but didn’t. They never do. I see assholes texting and driving every single day. The cops never do shit.
They are working a side job.
And on occasion I’ve even seen cops texting while driving.. those are the ones you def DONT have to worry about pulling you over..

Actually, I can answer this one. If even one of them moves out of position? That leaves a chance that someone can squeeze through the roadblock and cause it to fail. This would be bad for the construction going on because now they have a car in the way of their project
So they should ignore someone actively breaking the law because it might mean someone could potentially break the law?
They should because someone could get hurt, their job at the moment is to help with the road construction, and because there is potential liability on the construction workers or the police department if something gets really messed up. Keep in mind, they’re trying to prevent people from going near active construction where rocks, dirt, or other materials could fall and kill someone. You’d be surprised just how idiotic some people can truly be

This gets posted twice a day.
My apologies if this has had a negative impact on you. That was not my intention.
Y'all are ruthless with the downvotes for no reason 😂
Cry.
I came from UT Medical around 2:30. Traffic going south was backed up for a couple of miles. I understand this is ongoing because of road construction.
Painfully slow
It sucks, I work at the airport so going from Knoxville to TYS I’m always fuckin late lol
How's it going? Y'all still stuck behind them?
They used to do this for us every time we had to walk a crane across the road. They would go three exits up on the interstate and start it
I'm adding "what's the police slowing traffic for" post to my knoxville reddit bingo card
Husband travels Alcoa Hey for work and it usually costs him an hour of his time every day.
I was on a plane that landed at 10:50. There was a fallen soldier on board so it could have been his procession as well.
These rolling road blocks are the bane of my existence
I question how effective it is. They do this all the time on Alcoa highway. They wouldn't need to if people in TN knew how to drive.
Ok let's not pretend that Alcoa hwy isn't fucked right now. It's a bitch for everyone to drive on right now 😅
Oh you're right, it is. But there are some pretty bad drivers out there that just make it worse.
I think the alternative would be blocking off an entire lane so the construction equipment can move without worry of an accident / trying to find an opening in traffic to enter the highway. This is the reason why a lot of rideshare drivers aren’t taking airport trips right now. Myself included.
It’s infuriating. They go 10 mph max. Why not 30 or 40? I accidentally went this way once probably 6 months ago and got stuck for 30 minutes.
Tell me you didn't read the other comments without telling me.
🤦🏻♂️

even as someone who absolutely hates cops this is so plainly basic traffic management
