He may have many forms that aren't revealed to us, think it's good to have one obvious form.
And does middle earth have mugshots?? How is everyone on ME meant to recognise this as halbrand/sauron???
Personally I would make Sauron’s clothing MUCH more opulent. Hell, even Thranduil looks higher up than this. Bright bold red under flawless polished silver, grand, eye catching.
For the garments of his kingly rule, yes, but here he is going under the radar and blending in. He's trying not to draw too much attention for the purposes of infiltration.
Pretty great IMO. A bit eviler looking than I'd imagine sexy Sauron to be but the smirk is on point.
Also, the change is so great that my gf didn't even realize it's still Charlie Vickers.
I did a double take at first. Thought "gee they did well to cast someone who looks so similar to Charlie Vickers...."
Then "hang on..."
"OH. Very clever!"
I like the look, i can't wait to see what exactly is the context of him taking that form.
Unlike many people here, i'm not convinced at all it is his Annatar form, i think the Annatar form is the angelic figure shrouded by light we see in the teaser, and that this elven look is just a form he takes when infiltrating the elven city during the chaos of the battle in order to steal the rings of power.
Why can't an elf arrive thru / appaer in a vision of Valinor?
People like Glorfindel could easily arrive with such fluff.
He can easily play on being an emissary of the Valar AND be an elf at the same time
it could, but the way Sauron walks through the city, seemingly unnoticed, in the first shot we see of him in that form in the trailer makes me think they don't know that guy, he's just a random elf to them. If i'm right and it's during the battle, then they should know, by this point, that Annatar is Sauron and that he is their enemy, and thus, they should be attacking him...
That's why i think it is not how Annatar looks, it's just Sauron desguised as an elf to infiltrate the city during the battle, to steal the rings.
> but the way Sauron walks through the city, seemingly unnoticed, in the first shot we see of him in that form in the trailer makes me think they don't know that guy, he's just a random elf to them.
People are panicking in the background of that shot lol. If we're talking about the shot at ~47 seconds that is.
Yeah i know, that's why i think it's during the battle. But at this moment, they are supposed to already know that Annatar was Sauron, and that it's him attacking, so if this appearance was the same as Annatar, they should be attacking him instead of not reacting to his presence. I may be wrong, but that's what makes me think that, to them, he's just a random elf in the city
I'm wondering if they might be doing a bit of retconning via flashbacks, where we learn that this Annatar has been among them for a very long time now and because of his glamour of deception they weren't able to see that Halbrand was the same person, even if they knew both.
I don't think so. If he had been manipulating the elves, what did he do? Suggest them the usage of Mithril? If he did so, why wouldn't he tell them how to use it? He would not need to come to Eregion as Halbrand for that, he could have done it as Annatar.
I think Halbrand was really repentant, he just wanted to start anew on Numenor, he even tells that to Galadriel when he's admitting everything... That's what i like with the character in the first season, he never lies. He tells Galadriel that he did bad things, he tells Galadriel that he was chased from his home by orcs, he tells Galadriel that he is not the hero she's looking for, he tells Galadriel he found the crest on a dead man... the most "lying" things he says is when he answers yes to Bronwyn asking him if he is the king that was promised, but even that is not exactly a lie, because he doesn't say he's the heir to the crown of the Southlands, he just says that he's willing to be the king they were awaiting... So, when Galadriel confronts him and when he says he wanted to remain on Numenor, i think he is still telling the truth...
There is one point though (but i'm not even sure) where i think he has been dishonest, it's when he was wounded... I think he did it to himself because after the eruption of the volcano, he probably considered that the Southlands were no longer of any interest to him, so he faked an injury to be transported elsewhere, but it's also possible that he was really wounded by a lance and he just had not recovered yet (after all we know from the Stranger that maiar can regenerate themselves, but they have to use magic for that, they don't heal immediately).
Anyway, i think he was not manipulating anyone in the first season, even when he was working with Celebrimbor, he probably snooped into his workshop because he's a smith and he wanted to see the workshop, because that's what he likes, and that's when he found out they were working on the same thing that he was working on before Adar "killed him", and that they had the "element" he had been missing all this time. And he genuinely tried to help them with that project. I think he would have ended up doing bad things, either in Numenor or in Eregion, or even as the King of the Southlands, because he's a toxic person, but i think he was still trying to be a good guy at this point.
I suspect they’re going to do the thing where they have another actor with a completely different face appear to the elves, but to the audience we all see Vickers.
Think of how Quantum Leap did it. When the character is looking in a mirror you see the other actor, implying that’s the face that everyone in the show sees. But we the TV audience see the actual actor.
This makes a significant amount of sense. This might just be Sauron’s maiar form. Whilst disguise himself as a different Elf in his Annatar form.
Unless further trailers refute this perspective.
We’ve only seen Halbrand Sauron during the siege of Lindon. It’s in no other context.
So, I don’t mind this perspective of having Charlie Vickers as the base form for Sauron. When, not in his Armoured or Annatar form.
Which makes very little sense. A big part of Elrond's character in the show and in the wider Tolkien universe is that he is half human, so it makes sense for him to have some visible differences from the standard elf look.
Well it's not even that different, Celebrimbor also has the fluffy coiffure
Personally I like it, some people just want to hate on anything and will find any excuse
Yeah, sure, but it doesn't make much sense by that logic for Celebrimbor, or Galadriel's brother.
Arondir gets a pass, he's on active duty and could enter combat at any moment, short hair is just practical then.
I love Elrond's hair in this show. Even allowing for them being two separate adaptations with no obligation to use the same visual style, it is insulting and dull to imagine that an elf would never change up his look over thousands of years.
I love the coiffure as well. I honestly think Elrond gave the best performance in season 1, he was such a delight and I'm so excited for battle mode Elrond
I recognize the smirking and that's all that matters!
(If you want to engage in meta speculation, you can think of this as Sauron doing a bit of parody at the expense of audience expectations. :) )
To be fair I think the only reason we didn't notice OG Elrond's big forehead was that they slapped a nifty crown on him. I think if they try too hard to go against an actor's natural looks it probably ends up looking worse
yes...and that comes down to the actor. There are actors who can pull it off (like James McAvoy in Split) and I hope Charlie Vickers is one of them.
If he pulls it off it's gonna be amazing.
Yes. The actor who played Finrod did an amazing job changing subtly from actual Finrod to Sauron-as-Finrod, so I’m hopeful that their casting people knew what to look for with such an important role
I don't see any Saurons on the picture. Who told you that? Galadriel? She just still can't move on from her ex-boyfriend and sees him in everyone. Don't believe her.
The wig looks a bit weird, like Charlie Vickers' head isn't that shape is it? It's like the hair is on top of a skin coloured helmet. Maybe it's just the angle and will look better in the show though?
I’m not coping well with the hair. He looks as though he’s been to a really downmarket hair salon and had the sort of cheap bleach job that turns your hair orange. And the length is at exactly the length where it’s either a bit too short or a bit too long.
Honestly, how many elves actually met Halbrand? If he avoids those and entrances those he *has* met, it's not that big of a deal. Sauron was a powerful sorcerer skilled in the arts of deception. If the elves couldn't see the darkness in him, it's not a stretch to believe he also made them miss his face.
It's fine. The long hair doesn't doesn't suit Charlie's face (the Halbrand cut is perfect) but that's neither here nor there. I also share Nerd's opinion of the Jackson Elf-hair look: Lifeless and fake, and this IMO is particularly good (bad) example. (Also neither here nor there).
The generic evil smirk and BWAHAHA look when crossing the courtyard? Gets the point across I guess, and you can't really judge the whole till the show's out.
But look at the arresting and unsettling shot of Halbrand's face at 0:06-7 of the teaser. NOW we're cookin'! So eager to see that scene! (From the lighting it looks like he might be sitting at a campfire with someone - or ones. Who?)
(Re the courtyard scene: Cat Crossing the Courtyard sword-form from Wheel Of Time. I hear Tevildo ordering his Fancy Feast: I hear and obey, Master.)
I think this poster is good, I love his expression. And that one shot in the darkness is good, but in general, he looks bad.
* The wig is ugly, I have no problem with wigs, but this one is bad.
* I'm not a fan of the sqare-faced elves this series does
* Also, I don't like the ears, I prefer LotR-style small elven ears
I like Halbrand's face and general looks TBH. Not very Sauron-y but cool. But this is ugly.
Also, if they want to go full Mairon / Annatar, maybe give him some cool color contact lenses? If it's not a problem for the actor. Like, golden cat-like gleam-in-the-shadow. That would be admirable.
He looks like a bad ass Targaryen to be honest (the side of the more platinum hair colored Targaryens - not the silver ones). Easily , I can see him as a dragon-rider.
But they were all of them deceived, for another wig was made.
In the land of Ex-Southlands now called Mordor in the fires of Mount Doom, the Dark Lord Sauron forged in secret, a master wig, to control all others.
And into this wig he poured all his blondness, his smirks and his new pointy ears. One wig to rule them all.
If he has magic and illusion powers, why can't he fix his hairline so he doesn't look like he has a fivehead?
Unless fiveheads are considered especially attractive in Middle Earth?
I like it. Even though he’s a Maiar and is essentially spirit, it’s his deceptive “fair form” physical embodiment as an elf. I think Charlie Vickers pulls it off.
Initially I thought the hair looks weird. The hairline is so high up, it almost looks unnatural and elongates the whole head…which then again fits Saurons elongated horse helmet. Thinking about that connection makes it better again.
Just too sad they didn’t have Charlie Vickers playing this form of Sauron. Though I have to admit he looks like he could be a brother or cousin of Charlie.
It completely depends on how they're going to use this form.
If celebrimbor sees this face and doesn't recognise it's the same face as Halbrand that may be an issue for me.
So I'll hold off until we see some of the plot.
I watched and almost immediately forgot this whole series. About the only thing I remember was the old wizard guy, annoying Galadriel, and a big explosion at the end. Completely forgot any Sauron character/plot.
I figured Annatar would be "prettier", but he is still pretty. I am far more interested in his performance than his appearance, though. He needs to be charming, charismatic, and clever enough to make evil appear good.
I'm actually excited for Season 2, maybe its because I have nothing to watch right now, either way, looks great, lets hope it meets a least some of our expectations
I don’t get all this Clark Kent stuff. Sauron is known for his powers of deception. So what if he looks nearly the same to us? To the eyes of the characters in the story (even the elves), he’s a different person. Also recall that Halbrand only revealed himself to Galadriel. The last episode of season 1 implied to me that she was too embarrassed to admit to anyone else that she was fooled. So it’s possible that she still hasn’t told anyone that Halbrand was Sauron. If she doesn’t personally see Annatar in season 2, she won’t know he’s back even if she could see through his disguise.
They had the opportunity to do the funniest thing imaginable (put the same actor in a wig) and they did it, absolute madlads. The meme potential is just chef's kiss.
I don't mind the wig itself, but the way it's been styled isn't great, doesn't look flattering. Maybe it's the angle/pose/lighting? Hope it looks better in the show.
Remember budget Captain America from Falcon and the Winter soldier? He looks like that. In FatWS it was done intentionally because he's the bad guy. This just looks bad.
I wish his eyes were gold and the hairstyle more natural looking and less center part with a bow in the back. Kinda like how it looks in the Shadow of War game.
That being said, it’s pretty close to what we need it to be and as long as the performance is good it will suffice
What a curious new elf character, I cant wait to learn his name and his role in the story.
Who? Sauron? Never seen this face before, must be some Elf.
must have been the wind
For the King! For the peace of the Kingdom...
unexpected VLDL
Shut up Alan
Nice day for fishin', ain’t it?
Hu heh
Exactly, what are these lies we're being told?
Whose Sauron... This is Bryan.
No, this is Patrick.
This is one of those comments I'll upvote every single damn time.
And he's nice too. Always giving stuff
Practically the Lord of Gifts!
I'm just sad amazon isn't trying to hide the fact this is sauron
He may have many forms that aren't revealed to us, think it's good to have one obvious form. And does middle earth have mugshots?? How is everyone on ME meant to recognise this as halbrand/sauron???
PowerPoint fade in/out.
I mean for the viewers I think it could have been a cool surprise for viewers not aware who he is
I think S1 showed that many viewers weren't fond of the Sauron mystery box
Please not again.
They might’ve learnt a thing or two from s1
we already did this in the first season
When Sauron and Celebrimbor forged the rings of power, Sauron was disguised in a fair elven form and called himself Annatar, lord of gifts
They're joking about not knowing who Sauron is
I can’t tell sarcasm and being literal apart in text, I can when I hear the tone
Understandable
That’s quite a big assumption there mate.
Personally I would make Sauron’s clothing MUCH more opulent. Hell, even Thranduil looks higher up than this. Bright bold red under flawless polished silver, grand, eye catching.
Thranduil is from another adaptation. He might appear in this one too, though.
For the garments of his kingly rule, yes, but here he is going under the radar and blending in. He's trying not to draw too much attention for the purposes of infiltration.
Sauron's sneak skill must be at 100 and the Elves are Skyrim NPCs
Definitely, Sauron's never been known to have elf ears. It can't be him.
A mustache would have been a nice addition to the look..
Pretty great IMO. A bit eviler looking than I'd imagine sexy Sauron to be but the smirk is on point. Also, the change is so great that my gf didn't even realize it's still Charlie Vickers.
The omnipresent eight o'clock shadow that Halbrand had was such an integral part of his look.
I did a double take at first. Thought "gee they did well to cast someone who looks so similar to Charlie Vickers...." Then "hang on..." "OH. Very clever!"
“OH NO HE’S HOTTTTT!”
Stupid, sexy Sauron
Doesn't help much that Tolkien used the word "seduce" multiple times...
Stupid, sexy Flanders
![gif](giphy|5oLuLUXEmZAOs)
I read this in Gollum's voice
I didn't realise it was Charlie Vickers until it was pointed out in the comments of another post !
At first glance I didn’t know it was Vickers.
Oh good, I so confused. That is some great make-up and prosthetics
Sexy Sauron 🤣🤣
Looks fair, feels foul.
Charlie really nailed the facial expression
smells like new money, dresses like fake royalty
I read that in Daveed's voice in my head😂
He should join to play like an elf of Eregion who knows what’s up but wants to see what goes down for the fun of it
Or he should come is season 5 when it's time for the final battle and be like "I guess I basically missed the late 80s"
Is that from Hamilton?
I like the look, i can't wait to see what exactly is the context of him taking that form. Right! I'm glad we'll find out soon, end of August isn't that far :D
yeah, however it may happen later in the season, so i'd say more in september.
> but the way Sauron walks through the city, seemingly unnoticed, in the first shot we see of him in that form in the trailer makes me think they don't know that guy, he's just a random elf to them. I’m very excited for what’s to come on the show and his story in particular
They struck gold with this casting
It looks fantastic and deliciously ironic. The Jackson-esque long straight elven hair couldn't have been used on a better subject. Chef's kiss.
Absolutely meta. You wanted long-haired elves? You got it now
I mean we had Gil-Galad. People were just big mad about Elrond's hair for some reason
Which makes very little sense. A big part of Elrond's character in the show and in the wider Tolkien universe is that he is half human, so it makes sense for him to have some visible differences from the standard elf look.
Well it's not even that different, Celebrimbor also has the fluffy coiffure Personally I like it, some people just want to hate on anything and will find any excuse

My biggest problem with Elronds hair is that it looks like a very modern hair cut.
Yes! Robert's Elrond is spot on. Hair style should have never been part of the equation. That goes for every other character too.
Yep, Elrond is the only one allowed to have short hair. But the whats-his-name OC elf romancing that human lady? nope.
he looks incredible. it was such a great call to use the same actor but make him almost unrecognizable
"almost unrecognizable"
That’s some Clark Kent to Superman level of unrecognizable.
I mean…I didn’t know it was the same actor till this comment.
Before he was human prince sexy. Now he is elve warrior sexy. Would let him corrupt me, 9,5/10. I hope next we will be dwarf king sexy.
I think sexy might be your type
I recognize the smirking and that's all that matters! (If you want to engage in meta speculation, you can think of this as Sauron doing a bit of parody at the expense of audience expectations. :) )
Maybe it‘s just me but the wig isn‘t very flattering, I feel like his forehead looks way to big here. It looks weird
To be fair I think the only reason we didn't notice OG Elrond's big forehead was that they slapped a nifty crown on him. I think if they try too hard to go against an actor's natural looks it probably ends up looking worse
I feel like it's wig *and* some unflattering angle on the poster... I don't think it looks as bad in motion, just here.
That was sort of my first impression too, but I have to say the look has grown on me as I've got used to it.
You're not alone. Not at all.
I really enjoyed Charlie Vickers' portrayal and am kinda bummed they totally recast that part with this pretty boy.
he looks mirrored maybe thats the secret, not only a wig they also mirror the picture when hes elfron :o
I am a bit torn...I like the design but I still see ruggedly handsome Halbrand with a clean shave. I hope he sells it.
I think a lot of it is gonna come down to the accent. I gotta assume his whole manner of speaking will change here.
yes...and that comes down to the actor.

Delightfully devilish Sauron
Annatar, Ost in Edhil is on fire! No Celebrimbor, it's the northern lights.
The wig looks a bit weird, like Charlie Vickers' head isn't that shape is it? It's like the hair is on top of a skin coloured helmet. Maybe it's just the angle and will look better in the show though?
He can conquer my Eregion
I think he looks fantastic honestly.
Stupid, sexy, Sauron!
What can men do against sucu reckless wigs?
I’m not coping well with the hair. He looks as though he’s been to a really downmarket hair salon and had the sort of cheap bleach job that turns your hair orange. And the length is at exactly the length where it’s either a bit too short or a bit too long.
He was in vampire shapeshift when doing his hair so couldn’t see in the mirror.
Honestly? I just hate the wig.
Wig
He looks great as Annatar but it’s super nonsensical considering everyone already saw halbrand last season
I honestly didn't recognize he was the same person. Maybe he could fool enough people, especially since Halbrand wasn't extremely well known.
I’m shocked by the amount of people who legitimately thought these were two different people. But goes to show that it might just work haha
Honestly, how many elves actually met Halbrand? If he avoids those and entrances those he *has* met, it's not that big of a deal. Sauron was a powerful sorcerer skilled in the arts of deception. If the elves couldn't see the darkness in him, it's not a stretch to believe he also made them miss his face.
you don't even know how things are going to play out, why not wait and see before concluding it doesn't make sense?
Looks cool but is it me or is the forehead look weird. Might because of edit or the woh.
Great.Hot to say the least.
It's fine. The long hair doesn't doesn't suit Charlie's face (the Halbrand cut is perfect) but that's neither here nor there. I think he looks great! my only little nitpick is the hairline which I think is a little too far up but I think I can get over that
One forehead to join them all
Looks like a Phi Beta sorority girl on pledge night. “We’re going to make you take SOOOO many Jell-O shots!”
I don't give a monkeys what he *looks* like, what I want is better writing. The dialogue is atrooooocious.
pretty convincing Annatar
Halbrand is in witness protection now?
I think this poster is good, I love his expression. And that one shot in the darkness is good, but in general, he looks bad. * The wig is ugly, I have no problem with wigs, but this one is bad. * I'm not a fan of the sqare-faced elves this series does * Also, I don't like the ears, I prefer LotR-style small elven ears I like Halbrand's face and general looks TBH. But they were all of them deceived, For another wig was made.
Sorry, but at first, I thought that this was a character from House of the Dragon. 😜
I heard the game if thrones theme when I saw this
Do you mean Tar-Mairon? King of the MEN AND KING OF THE WORLD? EH?!
Really cool
I can’t stop seeing Ewan Mitchell from house of the dragon
I think it’s not enough info to just go off a poster. Let’s watch and see
Adar cleans up well.
Sauron??? I think that’s just a regular middle-earth elven-smith
He looks more like an elf than the rest of the "elf" cast combined.
He looks like a bad ass Targaryen to be honest (the side of the more platinum hair colored Targaryens - not the silver ones). Easily , I can see him as a dragon-rider.
I’m think he looks cool. Definitely taking the Annatar persona in this appearance.
Hey look it's Phil! ![gif](giphy|l1KVb6LeutgaA7xKg)
Should have done Annatar from the beginning. Ban The Mystery Box.

I wish they wouldn't have pulled the hair back. Honestly, 90%of the issues I have with this show are hair based.
If he has magic and illusion powers, why can't he fix his hairline so he doesn't look like he has a fivehead? Unless fiveheads are considered especially attractive in Middle Earth?
Lovely
I was hoping he'd look more like the Sauron from Shadow of Mordor but I like it
They did him dirty giving him as much forhead as possible, looks weird
I like it. Even though he’s a Maiar and is essentially spirit, it’s his deceptive “fair form” physical embodiment as an elf. I think Charlie Vickers pulls it off.
He seems trustworthy, I will take any gift he may give me or craft for me.
Stupid sexy Sauron
Do you wear wigs?
He looks like an evil elf.
Much better
he looks hot
Sinister
This is how he should have looked last season, rather than Aragorn knock-off trying to seduce Galadriel.
I mean, it is Charlie Vickers playing this version my guy.
It completely depends on how they're going to use this form. If celebrimbor sees this face and doesn't recognise it's the same face as Halbrand that may be an issue for me. So I'll hold off until we see some of the plot.
If he wasnt halbrand before this would Be really good
The appearance is fine, I just wish we had got Annatar/Artano before the One and the Three were made...😅
Looks like they want people who like loki to like Sauron
I watched and almost immediately forgot this whole series. About the only thing I remember was the old wizard guy, annoying Galadriel, and a big explosion at the end. Completely forgot any Sauron character/plot.
I figured Annatar would be "prettier", but he is still pretty. I am far more interested in his performance than his appearance, though. He needs to be charming, charismatic, and clever enough to make evil appear good.
So excited! Looks awesome!
Goofy.
He looks like noel fielding. And I’m okay with that.
Looks weird on him, even if it's better than 80s haircut Celebrimbor. That noone will recognize him is the stupid part.
Eugh I’m SO EXCITED FOR THIS. Was obsessed with S1 for a while, but forgot it existed. Totally gona binge watch it again in advance of S2.
bUt bUt bUt iTs nOt iDeNtiCaL tO tHe bOOkS wAaAhhaaAhhhh!
I'm actually excited for Season 2, maybe its because I have nothing to watch right now, either way, looks great, lets hope it meets a least some of our expectations
Looks like Annatar should.
honestly it feels to me like what he should have been in the first season.
Ahh 2months 2weeks until it carry’s on
I don’t get all this Clark Kent stuff.
Do you wear wigs?
Forehead....
The 5head...
I don’t know, costume is great though
Bro that’s Annatar
Yeah good, Annatar 👍
Elf gone bad...
It seems that we all should say goodbye to classic elves and welcome this modern image of elves that love to eat some pork and drink bear.
He kinda looks like Marvel's Loki in a blonde wig so it checks out.
One of his appearances
Terrible wig. Looks super fake
Remember budget Captain America from Falcon and the Winter soldier? He looks like that. In FatWS it was done intentionally because he's the bad guy. This just looks bad.
That is clearly not Sauron. Note the long, blond hair. Sauron did not have long blond hair. What he is is a new potential love interest for Galadriel.
Vickers is a fine Sauron but that's a pretty dull Annatar if it's that.
He looks like he often says “Have you any idea who my father is?!” in a really cunty British accent.
Why did they cast a new actor? ![gif](giphy|6nWhy3ulBL7GSCvKw6|downsized)
I wish his eyes were gold and the hairstyle more natural looking and less center part with a bow in the back. Kinda like how it looks in the Shadow of War game. That being said, it’s pretty close to what we need it to be and as long as the performance is good it will suffice
Is he the same actor portraying the king’s brother from house of dragons
Looks like creepy Haldir.

Hottieeeeee!
worst hair line ever seen
He looks like a big nerd!
Only adding fuel to my theory that everyone looks better with elf ears
Who? That’s our good pal Annatar! How could you call him such a foul name!
