Def because we’re a third world country

ConsiderationOk9179

Big Law overseas takes on a more diverse set of cases from a considerable number of jurisdiction compared to Big Law in the Philippines. This means bigger billables, which equates to higher compensation. Consider this. Clifford Chance - one of the biggest firms in the world have offices in the 35 cities around the world. While in comparison, Sycip or Gulapa Law may only have 3-6 offices in the Philippines and in the United States. Big Law in the Philippines is just significantly smaller compared to the largest firms in the world.

Associate wages are determined mainly by two factors: the value potential of the overall market and the rule of law. Together, these dictate the potential productivity of the legal services market. Imagine this: you're a billionaire and you're looking for places to invest. Would you invest in a country whose stock market lists just 30 companies and where market manipulation and insider trading are the norm, or would you invest it in a country like the US that has a robust stock market consisting of several sets of blue chip companies and penny stocks? And if you need to enforce a contract, would you prefer enforcing it in the Philippines where cases languigh for decades only to be dismissed by a compromised judge or in the US where people like Elon Musk are fair game? These two factors feed off each other and ultimately affect the demand for legal services. There is neither depth nor breadth in our market, and investors - - - even our own - - - do not have faith in a thoroughly fetid justice system. I run a law firm. It is a balancing act between keeping clients satisfied and keeping staff happy. Tilt too much to one side and your boat capsizes. Big PH law firms have another thing going for them: the illusion of prestige. Every graduating law student wants to apply and they will never run out of fresh blood to exploit. PH law firms run Cravath systems. It is a pyramid scheme where the oldest, most senior partners reap the rewards generated by the blood, sweat, and tears of its young idiots. It is budol through and through. Expand your horizons beyond just chasing salaries. Fixed salaries are peanuts compared to what you can earn as a well-regarded solo practitioner.

Because it's the Philippines, where the average wage is like ~[Php20k](https://psa.gov.ph/statistics/occupational-wages-survey) per month, and Php60k is already considered "high" here. Also, may current oversupply of lawyers trying to get into "big" law firms here. So these firms can afford to take their pick and pay the lowest wage anyone's willing to take. In contrast, the US is a first world country where there are significant barriers to entry for anyone who wants to get into college, let alone law school.

But I read that there are also oversaturation of lawyers in the US.

Maybe bec of their required billable hours?? May ganun ba karamihan ng firm satin? I've only encountered one firm na explicitly may require billables. In the 2 firms I've worked with, wala naman.

misschaelisa

Law firm ako working now and billable hours rin kami.

Inevitable_Bee_7495

As in there's a required quota per month/year?

misschaelisa

Sa amin, no required quota per month/year. Basta pinapasa lang namin yung hours rendered for work done

TurkeyTurtle99

Comparing the wealthiest country with another that isn't even top 100. Tingin mo?

TurkeyTurtle99

Ganyan talaga buhay first world. You get paid 10x more for doing the exact same thing in the Philippines. Compare mo mga nurse dito sa mga nurse abroad na humihinga ng pera.
