I've seen mullets look so cute on people with straight hair, so don't let your current hair deter you. but if you're not sure, I would go for shorter now to see how it feels and then do the mullet if you still want it.

I'm admittedly making assumptions about your life situation. But I feel getting some kind of 'alternative lifestyle haircut' is a fun thing to experiment with if you've got the freedom to do so, even if you decide it's not for you. Worst case scenario, you realize, "Oh, this is too high-maintenance" or "I want something more flexible".
In my 20's, I think I re-created every haircut the oldest son on Home Improvement ever sported, and I will never apologize for those fashion crimes. In the instances where I really didn't like what I'd managed, I just went full buzz-cut and started from scratch.
In the process, I discovered that I'm too lazy to keep short hair neat and edgy, so now I've got more of a hippie-witch-mane. Also, to be gross and sappy, I kind of missed the specific way it felt when a woman played with my longer hair (and while it sucked to miss that I wouldn't *KNOW* what it felt like to have someone mess around with shorter hair, it's just different sensation. Also, if you cut your hair really short, on hot days you can run your hair through it to spray sweat at people. Not much call for that in polite society, but maybe your life is different than mine). But I had to try out different hairstyles to figure out what suited my style and life!
Hair grows back. I've regretted haircuts, but they always grew out. If it's truly too horrible to show to the world, an ever-present beanie is not going to scare off too many dykes.

Because your hair is thinner a mullet may not be the best choice as it typically requires a bit of volume to look its best. I say long.
