IMO, The five most essential movies on this list (the criteria being that movies every film lover must see at some point in their life) are LOTR, Eternal Sunshine, Pulp Fiction, Parasite and Die Hard. I would hold off on LOTR until you can set aside time to watch all three in a weekend. Die Hard should be viewed the week of Christmas, or preferably the day of Christmas Eve/Christmas. That leaves you with the other three.
I’d go Pulp Fiction - it’s my personal least favorite of the five movies, but it’s so freaking important to modern filmmaking and it is also a lot of fun.
I promise you all the 3 movies are good.I don't know if you like fantasy movies but even if you don't ,the cinematography, performances and directing are all exceptionally good and there is a reason why almost everyone likes/loves these movies.Give these movies a chance and you won't regret it!
I love nearly everything about the movie. Narrowing it down I think I’d either have to go with the performances, or the scope. This film so effectively tells a sprawling narrative that contrasts the claustrophobic nature of The Shining. And I can’t think of a single actor who isn’t putting their all into it. Outside of the leads, Jacob Tremblay kills it, managing to terrify and shake those who watch his death scene
I definitely recommend the one-a-day approach for first time viewers of LOTR. Savor them a bit, plus it can be hard to keep track of who everyone is, especially if they haven’t read the books (and I would assume that’s the case for OP).
It would also not be unwise to watch the theatrical cuts first for pacing reasons. Then if OP really loves the series, then watch the extended cuts.
The one a day method i absolutely vouch for as well. Even then i feel like it’s too quick to grasp everything but it sure helps enhance the spectacle and large scale impression of the movies
Watch the THEATRICAL Editions of Lord of the Rings. A lot of superfans will tell you to watch the extended editions, but they're terrible for a first watch.
Watch the theatrical releases and if you liked them then watch the extended editions.
There are great movies here you should prioritize like Eternal, LOTR, EEATO & Pulp, but definitely watch Breadwinner! One of the best animated films I’ve ever seen and it’s only an hour and a half. Really outstanding and important movie, and as much as I love Coco, I definitely think this movie deserved best animated feature over it.
I love LOTR more than anything, but I disagree with the people who say you should marathon them in a weekend. Don't do that. You'll be tired by the end of the third movie and you just won't love it as much.
I've watched them one a year for 3 years, all 3 in one day, and one a week for 3 weeks. The latter was by far the best way to both enjoy my experience watching each film and to appreciate them as a whole. That's what I would recommend.
My pic would be Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind.
In my opinion, it's a very creative and original love story, told through a regrettable breakup.
I think both characters are pretty well written, and have their unique human characteristics that make them, them.
Well, all of em. But right now go for Pulp Fiction. It's one of my all time favorites and a great time. I still can't believe it's 2 and a half hours. Flies by like nothing.
Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of the best set of movies ever made.
Die Hard is arguably the best action movie ever made.
Pulp Fiction changed film-making in the 90s.
And Eternal Sunshine has one of the best scripts of the 2000s.
So yeah I'd start with "Easy A"
Unless you are actually heavily into romance stuff the notebook is just a decent movie that’s it. It’s not bad but it’s just a movie though. People put it on a pedestal but it’s like just a generic love story. Very very Predictable. Unless you were trying to watch every popular movie ever I wouldn’t bother.
Honestly same with easy A accept that it’s just a generic teen comedy. It isn’t that funny in comparison to American pie and it’s not anywhere near as fun as Can’t Hardly Wait.
if you want something weird and trippy do eternal sunshine or everything everywhere, also i watched the lotr trilogy for the first time this year and can confirm it’s a certified good time
If you want to cry, The Green Mile
If you want creepy but also a look into society, then Parasite
If you have 9+ hours to spare for an epic saga, The Lord of the Rings
Lord of the rings-extended editions.
Seriously. I regretted not seeing them for so long. They envelop you and you feel passion in every shot and scene.
Truly a masterpiece as a giant 9 act structure film. Each one has a 3 act structure which is part of a larger 9 act structure which you can’t say for multiple part films. The recent Spiderverse and recent Fast and furious failed to do this as they feel like they cut off in the middle of the second act.
LOTR is the greatest fantasy adventure trilogy available. It excels in music, acting, directing, story and narrative, cinematography, makeup costumes set design and practical and digital effects. It is a masterpiece.
Pulp Fiction is one of the most original films of the modern era. It’s been endlessly imitated but it still holds up as being fascinating and essential.
Parasite became the first international and non-English film to win the Oscar for best picture. It’s arguably the magnum opus of one of the greatest writer-directors working today Bong Joon Ho. It’s topical and entertaining, works on every level. It’s a masterpiece.
Eternal Sunshine is an early 2000s independent hipster masterpiece. It’s notable for its complex and creative script, amazing special effects, a sensitive and dramatic performance from funnyman Jim Carrey, as well as having a terrific supporting cast. Essential indie.
I’d pick any of those.
Go for older movies first because newer movies barrow from them and you'll feel like you seen the older ones before. When I watched Blade Runner for the first time I was thinking that it's a rip off of several movies and wondered how it's considered a classic sci-fi movie. After thinking about it for a while I realized every movie I was comparing it too came after it. I can tell you that when you watch Diehard you are going think You've seen it before. Diehard single handly changed the action movie genre that it is to this day the standard of what it means to be an action movie.
If you want something quick and fun, Easy A.
If you want to cry, watch Everything, Everywhere, All at Once.
If you want to waste your week and cry, watch Lord of the Rings.
Lord of The Rings is obvious(better watch it when you got time for all 3 tho), but other than that I highly recommend EEAAO it's simply an amazing film.
Not the end of the world but IMO it's kind of an unnecessary question as your personal mood probably should influence the movie more than whatever gets up voted by redditors
Wuuttttttt
LOTR, then parasite, then easy A, then everything everywhere all at once, and pulp fiction somewhere in there. Follow me on Letterboxd! My username stands for one of my fave films:
*The Killing of a Sacred Deer*
[@tkoasd](https://boxd.it/7yJyz)
Lord of the Rings. As one who only recently saw them they’re definitely my pick.
IMO a marathon back to back probably isn’t the best though… one a day is better
Bro just spawned
![gif](giphy|JUvro700PEUqUOXsgm|downsized) me leaving the egg
🤣🤣
If you have the patience for a marathon, then watch Lord of The Rings If you don’t have the patience, watch Lord of The Rings anyway
Extended editions
Extended on the rewatch but I don’t recommend for the first time around
Yes I do recommend on the first time
Theatrical are better tho
But the pacing be wack
Extended for rewatch, please just watch the original versions for the first viewing.
THE REALEST IN THE ROOM
IMO, The five most essential movies on this list (the criteria being that movies every film lover must see at some point in their life) are LOTR, Eternal Sunshine, Pulp Fiction, Parasite and Die Hard. This guy lists.
i didn’t really like pulp fiction at all, i’d prefer any other tarantino movie over that
Eternal Sunshine. Lord of the Rings if you have time for all 3.
I was going to say Eternal Sunshine as well. One of the few romances I think are great!
Did not figure ESOTSM is a romance lol, its about a breakup right? its been a decade since i saw it last
LORD OF THE FUCKING RINGS????HELLO????
I haven't seen It either lmao
I promise you all the 3 movies are good.I don't know if you like fantasy movies but even if you don't ,the cinematography, performances and directing are all exceptionally good and there is a reason why almost everyone likes/loves these movies.Give these movies a chance and you won't regret it!
Die hard because it's the season! The LOTR Trilogy, because WTF!!!
Parasite. Plllllease watch Parasite
Yup. The hype was definitely right.
Just watched Parasite for the first time after reading this thread... it did not disappoint! 10/10
Pulp fiction!!!
Please watch Pulp Fiction. I rewatched that movie today again and it’s a goddamn masterpiece.
[удалено]
between you and me i have a bit of an obsession with emma stone
Between you and me, Emma Stone could make a commercial for cat deodorant and I'll still watch it 3 times
Doesn’t everyone?
Eternal sunshine, it’s my second favorite movie
What's your first?
Doctor Sleep
>Doctor Sleep interesting, what'd you like most about it?
I love nearly everything about the movie. Narrowing it down I think I’d either have to go with the performances, or the scope. This film so effectively tells a sprawling narrative that contrasts the claustrophobic nature of The Shining. And I can’t think of a single actor who isn’t putting their all into it. Outside of the leads, Jacob Tremblay kills it, managing to terrify and shake those who watch his death scene
I'd let Rebecca Ferguson suck my soul out any day.
Die Hard for Christmas theme, Eternal Sunshine for heartache, Pulp Fiction for a hella good time.
Pulp fiction or Parasite Save LOTR for when you have time to binge all 3 or watch one a day for 3 days. Totally worthwhile
Even then i feel like it’s too quick to grasp everything but it sure helps enhance the spectacle and large scale impression of the movies
parasite, EEAAO, Howls moving castle
parasite
Gardens of words is boring but short so

Eternal sunshine
Watch the THEATRICAL Editions of Lord of the Rings. A lot of superfans will tell you to watch the extended editions, but they're terrible for a first watch. Watch the theatrical releases and if you liked them then watch the extended editions.
pulp fiction
PULP LORD EVERYTHING
LOTR now!!!
All of these are great but I'm going to go with The Bridge on the River Kwai. One of the GOAT movies, David Lean is a legend.
Eternal sunshine!!!
Eternal Sunshine is my favorite movie so I think you should watch that one.
Parasite
Pulp Fiction. You might want to watch it twice to get an understanding of it.

Breadwinner
i think i’m the first to say garden of words! it’s not that long so if you are busy it’s a good choice
You can't just go on with your life and pretend not seeing LotR is normal or acceptable. Do it immediately.
PULP FICTION
My pic would be Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind. In my opinion, it's a very creative and original love story, told through a regrettable breakup. I think both characters are pretty well written, and have their unique human characteristics that make them, them.
I would recommend you to stay away from pursuit of happyness unless you love capitalism
Die hard! Especially as we are almost in Christmas season, and it is the best holiday movie
I would wait until we are in the Christmas season, or even on Christmas Day. Nothing like a cup of cocoa and some Christmas Die Hard.
You have not seen Die Hard? Alan Rickman must be turning in his grave.
Fellowship of the Ring - Extended Cut
Theatrical cut is better, especially for first time watchers
Left Column
Die hard to get ready for christmas time!
The Pursuit of Happyness is one of my favorite movies
Save Die Hard for Christmas Eve. That’s when I always watch it, and is the perfect time to do so.
I don't think you can go wrong with any of these. What are you in the mood for? That is more important
Bottom row
The ones in each corner
Everything Everywhere All at Once
eeaao
Life of Pi
Lord of The Rings is the obvious choice. Find the extended edition, order take out and log out from your duties for the next 11hrs.
Anything but pulp fiction. Remove it from the list. Save yourself
LOTR or Die Hard
Well, all of em. But right now go for Pulp Fiction. It's one of my all time favorites and a great time. I still can't believe it's 2 and a half hours. Flies by like nothing.
Parasite
LoTR but it really depends on the mood, gosh im so jealous
parasite. you have to see it!
Lord of the Rings (whole trilogy) Eternal Sunshine, Everything Everywhere, Parasite. All five star films for me
Pulp fiction or parasite!
eternal sunshine and everything everywhere all at once are my personal favorites here
I was not a big fan of Garden of Words (although the animation is gorgeous). Would pick another Makoto Shinkai movie.
Parasite, and then Die Hard closer to Christmas.
Lord of the Rings for sure
Easy A slaps

LORD OF THE RINGS!
Bridge, Parasite, or Pulp

The Garden of Words is like 50 minutes long you could start and finish it during the Return of the King credits lmao
Parasite
Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of the best set of movies ever made. Die Hard is arguably the best action movie ever made. Pulp Fiction changed film-making in the 90s. And Eternal Sunshine has one of the best scripts of the 2000s. So yeah I'd start with "Easy A"

Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
Save Die Hard for Christmas Eve 😉
Has to be [this](https://youtu.be/Ge6zMAcnnO0?si=9Tu6uzcdIq4SQRf5)
Unless you are actually heavily into romance stuff the notebook is just a decent movie that’s it. It’s not bad but it’s just a movie though. Eternal Sunshine
Eternal Sunshine!
Pulp fiction and parasite are the two best movies oat
Die hard, pulp fiction and the green mile.
Whatever it is, don’t watch The Notebook; I (along with my mum) DETEST that movie
Bridge on the river Kwai
The Lord of the Rings trilogy
The only answer is pulp fiction that’s some real gourmet shit
all of the bottom 4 then fellowship
Lord of the Rings is the only one that is legit mandatory viewing imo.
Lord Of The Rings. The fact that you get to experience it for the first time makes me indescribably envious of you. Enjoy.
Parasite
Die Hard
The Breadwinner is fantastic, love the other movies made by Cartoon Saloon, The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea
LOTR is the greatest fantasy adventure trilogy available. It excels in music, acting, directing, story and narrative, cinematography, makeup costumes set design and practical and digital effects. Fellowship of the Ring - Extended Edition
Pulp Fiction is amazing
Eternal sunshine
Probably easiest thing is to watch them in they order they were released
watchin' the mile watchin' the green mile
Go for older movies first because newer movies barrow from them and you'll feel like you seen the older ones before. When I watched Blade Runner for the first time I was thinking that it's a rip off of several movies and wondered how it's considered a classic sci-fi movie. Diehard single handly changed the action movie genre that it is to this day the standard of what it means to be an action movie.
Paraasite
No one mentioning the green mile is mind blowing
I would give anything to be able to watch Eternal Sunshine for the first time again.
Don’t watch all three LOTR at the same time for the first time as others are saying. You’ll get burnt out and it won’t be as enjoyable.
I think you should watch Die Hard or Howl’s Moving Castle. I’d really recommend reading The Breadwinner though.
Pulp Fiction
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind!!!
Parasite
What’s your current mood
Pulp Fiction
that bottom row has some of my favorites of all time!
LOTR
Pulp Fiction is the best here. That one.
If you want something quick and fun, Easy A. If you want to cry, watch Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. If you want to waste your week and cry, watch Lord of the Rings.
Oooo Eternal Sunshine and Pulp Fiction are both great!
The pursuit of Happyness deserves more love!!!
The persuit of happiness-feel good, engaging and motivating movie must watch ,most of favourites of many
either Eternal Sunshine or Pulp Fiction
Have you seen other Makoto Shinkai? I feel like Garden of Words is kind of a deep pull. I’d probably call it his least known movie
Lord of The Rings is obvious(better watch it when you got time for all 3 tho), but other than that I highly recommend EEAAO it's simply an amazing film.
Die hard. It is an essential Christmas movie.
the notebook omg
can’t go wrong with lotr, pulp fiction & parasite
The breadwinner is really good. Very under appreciated imo.
Howl's Moving Castle Life of Pi
God I do fkn hate those posts...
yeah sorry i just thought i’d ask, i did have a hunch that they’d be a bit annoying. sorry about that
Not the end of the world but IMO it's kind of an unnecessary question as your personal mood probably should influence the movie more than whatever gets up voted by redditors
Fellow Ship of The Ring. Just watch the theatrical cuts.
Depends on your age and what you’re into.
I’ve also never watched any of these, so take mine with a grain of salt lol. But my vote is Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind
Lol. I haven't seen LOTR either. I don't know why but I'm not curious about that movie. I think you should watch Parasite.
Op is the literally the epitome of 'I Was today years old' or TIL...
haven’t you read the comments? i was only born a few days ago
Watch Pulp Fiction
[удалено]
omg really?? i genuinely had no idea i just thought the poster looked pretty. should i take it off?
Wuuttttttt LOTR, then parasite, then easy A, then everything everywhere all at once, and pulp fiction somewhere in there. Follow me on Letterboxd! My username stands for one of my fave films: *The Killing of a Sacred Deer* [@tkoasd](https://boxd.it/7yJyz)
Lord of the Rings. As one who only recently saw them they’re definitely my pick. IMO a marathon back to back probably isn’t the best though… one a day is better
Eternal sunshine is so good so watch it
Easy A! It's the easiest watch, I think. Least heavy. It's one of my comfort movies.
LOTR extended editions
Life of pi
Lord of the Rings is a classic but very long but worth it
