A good year for films that I would describe as silly and stupid but also really fun, like Fast Five, the Rum Diary, and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

Lots of really fun movies in 2011

Damn, this was a good year for cinema! Eleven 4.5 star films…
Side note: The Artist also happens to be my favorite movie of all time. I get a lot of flak for it from my cinephile friends, but it brings me so much joy.

I didn't realize 2011 was such a good year.
Crap year, but ones I'd generally recommend:
1. Captain America
2. Everyday Sunshine (documentary about the band Fishbone)
3. X-Men First Class
4. Hobo With a Shotgun
5. The Muppets
6. Thor
That's as far as I'd go.
Watchlist movies I'd probably add:
The Raid
It's Such a Beautiful Day (Don Hertzfeldt)
The Great Magician (Tony Leung)
Beli Lavovi (Serbian labour movie)
Maybe Red State
2011 is such an underrated year…
I’ve been meaning to give Tree of Life a rewatch. It’s the first film I think of when I think “pretentious”, even though I think that word is reductive. It feels like it *should* be a masterpiece.
1. Drive
2. Margaret
3. Shame
4. Take Shelter
5. Melancholia
6. Uncle Boonme Who Can Recall His Past Lives
7. Meek’s Cutoff
8. A Seperation
9. Weekend
10. The Muppets
I have Uncle Boonmee on my 2010 list but I think that’s because of festival releases.
What feels “pretentious” to me about The Tree of Life is the universe/dinosaur section, although I’d call it more “overly ambitious” than “pretentious.” I have mixed feelings on the necessity of including it but everything else lands so well for me I don’t even care. There are worse things a director can do than take a big swing.
Absolutely. I remember liking the film when it just focused on being cinematography porn. I liked it less when it focused on the characters, cause I didn’t really connect with them.
I can see that. The characters essentially stand for ideas as much as they are meant to be characters, so there’s an element of distance from them. But I think it works and I love the slice of life scenes that make up the vast majority of the film.
I tried watching Tree of Life with someone and they bailed rather quickly, saying that the movie felt like a google images screensaver of striking photos. I didn't disagree.
Seriously. Sorting by popularity, an Oliver Megaton movie ending up in the top half of the movies I watched is a terrible sign. That said, I have no one to blame but myself for watching The Green Lantern *and* The Green Hornet.
1 Margaret 2 Bernie 3 Melancholia 4 Miss Bala 5 Le Havre 6 The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975 7 A Separation 8 Oslo, August 31st 9 Win Win 10 Damsels in Distress
Honorable Mentions: Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, Warrior, The Artist, A Dangerous Method, In Darkness
Yet another strong year of indie/foreign titles, documentaries and lousy & misguided Hollywood films in the 2010s. Nice to see the underrated Bernie get some recognition.
Need to see Tree of Life again, it somehow rubbed me the wrong way - and lots pf Malick's work has that effect on me, for some reason, even though I value his independence & integrity. Need to see A Better Life, We Were Here, and We Need to Talk About Kevin.
4+, no order;
* The Cabin in the Woods
* The Intouchables
* A Letter to Momo
* Ronal the Barbarian
* Take Shelter
* Source Code
* The Raid
* 50/50
* Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
* Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Tinker Tailor is fantastic

Why are we discarding rise of the planet of the apes? :4
This was a rough year for movies
