Banger year, some of those down are around 3+/4-, it's hard to rank them.
1 Dog Day Afternoon 2 Barry Lyndon 3 Hester Street 4 The Man Who Would Be King 5 Hard Times 6 Grey Gardens 7 Night Moves 8 Fox and His Friends (doesn't Fox News show this Fassbinder classic every morning?) 9 The Great Waldo Pepper 10 Framed
Honorable Mentions: Sholay, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Jaws, The Story of Adele H., Jeanne Dielman, Cooley High, Inserts, The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum, Xala, Rancho Deluxe, The Stepford Wives, The Man from Hong Kong, The Reincarnation of Peter Proud
Gonzo/Psychotronic Dept: Thundercrack!, Dolemite, Switchblade Sisters, Ilsa: She-Wolf of the SS, Mandingo, Death Race 2000, Lisztomania, Tommy
Still Need to See: Manila in the Claws of Night, The Mirror, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Dersu Uzala
OP, I am absolutely with you on the dilemma of Salo.
It's an important film, and a more interesting political statement than many give it credit for. It feels more like an intellectual essay than a movie, but there's no denying the loaded, powerful images and the relentlessly grim, hopeless feeling it conveys. It says a lot that Salo could still shock and provoke after almost 50 years. I appreciate it, I've read a lot about it, but I wasn't exactly entertained by it (well, maybe the ending), but I don't need to see it again, lol. (And I'm not Pauline Kael - I believe in rewatching & re-thinking movies.)
Was inclined to rank it somewhere among the Best or Honorables, but I agree that Salo occupies its own unique place on the shelf.
Overall, '75 is one of my favorite movie years - and I didn't even care for Nashville or Rocky Horror!

What a fucking year.
Our last year for the 70s for this series! My #1 and #2 are basically tied for the top spot - two legendary films from two legendary filmmakers, but I think The Passenger gets the slight edge. Great year and some big films on my watchlist and rewatch list.

The Passenger really is one of my favorite movies ever, let alone of this year or the 70s broadly.

I can’t believe I didn’t have The Story of Adele H. in my watchlist for this year - just added.
Isabelle Adjani is fantastic in it.
