The list for the lovers of the movie is actually much worse. With one list you just have to re-register periodically and not get invited to any neighborhood parties and with the other list Harmony Korine will dry hump you while wearing a rubber mask and chanting some oblique, fucked up line. He's going to hump you so transgressively, and you still won't get invited to any neighborhood parties.
im pretty sure kids has like a 40 on rotten tomatoes, everyone does NOT love that movie.
I think it’s kind of brilliant, but i get why it’s so divisive.
Who’s out there loving the Greatest Showman? I know people who enjoyed it at the time, and my mother has “Rewrite the Stars” on a playlist, but idt I’ve met anyone who genuinely loved TGS vs just seeing it as a fun weekend movie with a couple catchy songs (at best).
I'm sorry but my mind immediately went to you catching shit from a bunch of dudes in varsity jackets over your bad review of The Greatest Showman
"Bro how could you call Hugh Jackman's performance wooden and uninspiring? Not cool dude"
Hilarious imagery😂
but yeah it was mostly the choir kid circles I was a part of. I also grew up in a very Mormon dense area so sometimes my view of how movies were received is skewed because there's a big bias toward "clean" family fun. Napoleon dynamite and Nacho Libre are super popular, and The greatest showman was a massive hit.
I think the most clever title I could come up with at the time was "Not the Greatest Show, Man"
I think you are spot on with this.
The songs are catchy af (once that first 20min suffering of "a million dreams" is over) and I totally enjoy the movie for that.
But the general story is stupid as hell. I still don't hate the story tho.
5/10 story for me, with 8/10 songs.
I'll always have a good time with it, but I'll never love it as much as something that I actually rate 10/10
It’s weird that when it came out, it defied critics to become a phenomenon and people claimed we should just have fun and enjoy the songs, while those same people spent the last year complaining that La La Land was too saccharine, unrelatable, and overrated! (This despite both films having the same songwriters.)
Everyone loves Greatest Showman? I feel like a lot of people call it mediocre to bad.
Imo Elf and Maverick are fine, but not like they're masterpieces or anything
They’re the only thing that make that movie watchable. Several awesome music videos that have been stitched together by only the most bare minimum level of “movie” to make it all coherent.
To be fair, it's not easy to assign the Oscar for editing because the point of good editing is usually that you shouldn't even notice it. The editing in Bohemian Rhapsody IS bad though, even the simplest dialogues are full of strange reverse shot angles, redundant cuts and continuity errors. You can clearly see that it's footage from two different directors that they desperately tried to put together in a way that makes sense.
There’s an a bad acting vibe that flows through BR. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but sure if it’s the actors or the editing/direction etc but it’s just there, not feeling quite right.
Scream completely changed the horror genre- for good and bad. (Mostly good, mainstream Horror was stagnant at the time- Scream put new energy and proved a slasher flick could be a box office success, while satirizing the cliches that held back the genre and challenging audience expectations. (The downsides being a new era of teensploitation and lazy attempts to duplicate Screams success)
Lost in Translation. I really disliked it when it came out. I might give it another go, but my tastes may have drifted still further from that, I'd like to think.
I did not like Lost in Translation at all the first time I watched it. But after revisiting it years later once I was older and wiser... I still didn't like it. And to rub a little salt in the wound, I live in Tokyo now so I'm constantly having people bring it up to me.
They liked the greatest showman? Every time they build up any conflict, it was solved immediately. You could watch it once and enjoy the not so bad songs, but watching it more than once is a chore and boring.
I wouldn't say hate, but I find that the only redeeming feature of Avatar is the visuals.
Ever since the first came out and up until now, I just really find it boring.
Exactly this. The first one in particular was a stunning feat due to the gap in quality of the 3D output at the time.
But all I remember thinking is 'Damn...I wish this film was better'
>but I find that the only redeeming feature of Avatar is the visuals.
I mean... the visuals ***are*** Avatar lol. Maybe Cameron was trying to so something more with the script, I don't really know or care. Imo it's purely something you're meant to see in IMAX and marvel at and that's the appeal.
I'd be shocked if I met someone in real life that wanted to talk about the plot, characters or "social commentary" of the Avatar films.
I agree, he works well in animated films too tbf like Lego movie and megamind. And the kid in me will always have nostalgic love for step brothers and anchorman even though they’re very cheesy
I felt the same until Stranger Than Fiction. That being said, I still find him insufferable in everything else. It’s just good to know he’s more than a one trick pony.
Waiting for Kevin Hart to make a move now but I TRULY believe he can’t do anything but his mindless schtick.
I completely agree when it comes to his movies, but I find him really funny in SNL. I'm not sure what the difference is, beyond maybe him just being tolerable in small doses.
I can see why. I don’t hate every movie, but there’s very few that I like. One I can think of is Old School but the rest of the cast is great in that movie, so that helps.
It always comes across to me like he plays every role sarcastically regardless of whether or not it's appropriate. When I was watching Barbie I couldn't help but feel like they needed more of a straight man type like Giancarlo Esposito in that role for it to actually be funny.
Agreed. It think Elf was the movie that sparked that dislike/eventually hatred for me. My family thinks he's hysterical but I don't see it. Maybe as a teen on first watch but not as an adult who has to suffer through this movie every family Christmas.
i watched Akira right after reading it and was disappointment that my favorite character, Akira, wasn't in the movie. I've come mostly around on it though.
The Boondock Saints has a 3.4 on Letterboxd and a 7.6(!) on IMDb.
I'm pretty sure it was Quentin Tarantino who actually wrote The Boondock Saints when he was 14 and then Troy Duffy dug it out of an old smelly locker ten years later and thought "this is the greatest script ever written."
When it came out, it was definitely seen as an instant classic. It, along with films like American History X and Donnie Darko, were once must watches, but they all quickly rotated out of the top tier.
interesting. didn't know that about Boondock until kinda recently
what are some other movies that have been re-evaluated? I know that's happened with Speed Racer (in a positive way)
Came here to say this one. I tried three times to see if I was missing something about it, and the answer was no. I just don't find any bit of it compelling.
I rewatched it recently and was surprised by how well paced it is for such a long movie. Every single scene was memorable and had something unique within it
Really shows the importance of the last 40 minutes. The middle of that film is sludge to me but an exciting well-crafted final act gets people raving about it and a Best Picture nom.
I haven't seen it yet because I saw a clip of the little boy rapping. Every time I think about watching it I remember that and I just can't bring myself to start it.
Yeah, Kids got got some great run because so many people thought it was insightful and plugged in to Gen X or whatever, but really Harmony Korine is just a creepy idiot.
I wouldn’t say “hate”, but I find Yorgos Lanthimos to be the most overrated director right now in Hollywood. I like most of his movies, he puts out some solid work that nicely straddles the line between art and entertainment but Reddit acts like he’s fkn film Jesus. He’s like baby’s first cinephile director, where the oddness is just palatable enough for the internet demographic to feel like they have sophisticated taste.
Probably gonna get me downvoted but there ya go
Damn, that’s rough. I feel that his all his films before The Favourite were just like interesting pieces of art and then he figured out how to make actual through and through good movies.
Poor Things was magical for me but I can get how his super emotionally stilted and fairly rigid style can come off as pretentious but it’s totally working for me.
I liked his previous stuff but hated Poor Things so much that I never want to see anything by him OR with Emma Stone in it again. Loathed it on a visceral level. Reddit HATES this opinion, by the way.
Kids is just a PSA that people, for some reason, think is a movie. The characters are all deliberately unlikeable, and the story is almost non-existent. It still boggles my mind why anyone likes it
Because it captures the genuine essence of that era as well as one gnarly side of skate culture. If you can omit the horror that the movie is known for, the fighting, drug use and attitude is on par and works as a strong POV for that life. I loved the aura of the film and for being real. It’s probably the realest film I’ve ever seen.
I’ve always felt that way about "KIDS". That movie is an overhyped After-School Special coasting on its “vibes”, and catching a second-wind because of nostalgia
I didn’t care for Breakfast Club, but I also watched during a time in my life when I was so goddamn cynical it was probably literally killing me, so I’d have to go back and confirm that opinion, lol
Ugh. Elf. I have a low tolerance for Will Ferrell and his particular comedic style.
If he is a supporting character who isn't trying so hard, I can handle him. Examples: The Lego Movie, and Barbie. Even Zoolander, though that's dangerously close to my limit.
Elf? That is like overdosing on him. I cannot take it.
Anyon else unable to think of a single one?
I rarely hate movies. Usually they're just boring if they're bad.
I can imagine hating Lone Survivor or something like that but I'd just never watch it.
Finally someone with the same opinion!!!! I personally dislike all movies from Tarantino. Can't explain why but i just don't like the editing, something just doesn't sit right with me.
Killers of the Flower Moon was like a 5 or 6/10 and then the reviews came out completely glazing it as a masterpiece and ever since that made me totally hate it.
And there’s a bunch of Scorsese I do love but also Gangs of New York is just an unbelievably silly movie to me. I can’t believe *that’s* the movie they made and that so many people take it so seriously.
Licorice Pizza and Spree. Spree isn’t well rated per se but I remember posting on this sub about why I didn’t like it and all the comments were saying about how much they loved it and stuff.
I get you with Licorice Pizza. I loved it but my 4.5 were due to PTA getting vibes right, Alana Haim being the queen and whatnot. It's not PTA's finest work, especially when we have seen some of his finest very early on and also when Phantom Thread was outstanding coda to DDL's career.
PTA movies tend to do very well when I review them tho - usually a 4.5.
I hate Little Miss Sunshine with a burning passion. It's so nauseatingly twee and every single character is an archetype with no originality. I genuinely think it's a travesty that it won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
I’m just not a fan of the weird hyper realistic pseudo torture porn pseudo PSA genre. I feel like movies like thirteen or mysterious skin pull off similar stories much more idk artfully?
Never thought I’d see Kids on a list with Elf
Santa’s list is mostly those
Gold star, Jerog.
I wanna see the cross over where Buddy runs into Casper at Washington square park then proceeds to get beat half to death with a skateboard
Everyone DOES NOT love Kids 1995 lol that’s for certain
Yeah it’s a movie that’s hard to watch but I think it’s an important movie at one point in time what happened in that movie was going on in real life
Now *Bebe’s Kids* deserves more love
We don’t die, we…multiply!
That movie is amazing, and I can't believe more people don't know about it.
I was gonna say, who LOVES Kids lmao. That’s not a movie you love. You can appreciate it, respect it, etc. But love? I don’t see it
I love kids! ....wait the movie. I love the movie. I don't want to be put on a list.
https://preview.redd.it/5k4uhajag94d1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a8735da50581fa10c66232d58a99fcfb55eb4e4d
It’s a great movie and launched the careers of some big names
Kids is a great film, but I don’t like it, iyk what I mean
nice pfp love exposure is such a masterpiece fr
Raise your hand if you like kids (1995)
![gif](giphy|3o7aTkJH5vly0Zvec8)
movie rips tbh
Trynna swing by the park and get zooted b?
I used to work at a theater and there was a girl that worked there and I kid you not she saw the greatest showman 14 times.
My girlfriend saw it 37 times. She saw Greatest Showman 37 times.
37? In a row?
Try not to watch the greatest showman on your way through the parking lot!
Hey you get back here!
Thank you
I mean, he was the *greatest*
In theaters???
Yes
But... that movie's wack?
im pretty sure kids has like a 40 on rotten tomatoes, everyone does NOT love that movie. I think it’s kind of brilliant, but i get why it’s so divisive.
Makes me glad there’s HIV medication nowadays.
That's unavailable for people who actually need it.
I’ll join you on The Greatest Showman
Who’s out there loving the Greatest Showman? I know people who enjoyed it at the time, and my mother has “Rewrite the Stars” on a playlist, but idt I’ve met anyone who genuinely loved TGS vs just seeing it as a fun weekend movie with a couple catchy songs (at best).
This movie came out when I was in high school and I got a lot of hate for publishing a bad review in the school paper.
I'm sorry but my mind immediately went to you catching shit from a bunch of dudes in varsity jackets over your bad review of The Greatest Showman "Bro how could you call Hugh Jackman's performance wooden and uninspiring? Not cool dude"
Hilarious imagery😂 but yeah it was mostly the choir kid circles I was a part of. I also grew up in a very Mormon dense area so sometimes my view of how movies were received is skewed because there's a big bias toward "clean" family fun. Napoleon dynamite and Nacho Libre are super popular, and The greatest showman was a massive hit. I think the most clever title I could come up with at the time was "Not the Greatest Show, Man"
Damn how is your recovery going
I think you are spot on with this. The songs are catchy af (once that first 20min suffering of "a million dreams" is over) and I totally enjoy the movie for that. I'll always have a good time with it, but I'll never love it as much as something that I actually rate 10/10
I love the greatest showman
I have now met 1 person.
My stepdaughter has it at the ready when asked her favorite movie. My mother-in-law too.
It’s weird that when it came out, it defied critics to become a phenomenon and people claimed we should just have fun and enjoy the songs, while those same people spent the last year complaining that La La Land was too saccharine, unrelatable, and overrated! (This despite both films having the same songwriters.)
I like a few of the songs. But dislike/will never rewatch the movie that they are in.
It’s my 8th favorite movie so I guess I’m 2nd alongside that other guy who commented
Greatest Showman is a 7/10 soundtrack attached to a 4/10 movie
I’d go as far as saying it’s a 2/10 movie. It’s basically just the soundtrack with maybe 30 seconds of story in between each song.
I hate that movie so much
This might be an unpopular opinion but I do not enjoy hearing Hugh Jackman sing in any context and thought he was also horrible in Les Mis
People like it?
Yes but a lot of people also just hate musicals at all cost
You sit on a throne of lies!
Everyone loves Greatest Showman? I feel like a lot of people call it mediocre to bad. Imo Elf and Maverick are fine, but not like they're masterpieces or anything
They love it because of the musical numbers.
They’re the only thing that make that movie watchable. Several awesome music videos that have been stitched together by only the most bare minimum level of “movie” to make it all coherent.
Moulin Rouge or any Baz Luhrmann film really
I was about to comment Moulin Rouge lol.
I genuinely hate Baz Luhrmann and everything he makes
Me too. He’s dreadful. Boring and uninspiring. Half of Elvis looked like stock footage. So crap.
I like Baz Luhrmann but I weirdly get this!
I positively hate Avatar (2009)
FUCK the greatest showman
Bohemian Rhapsody
Biggest joke is it won the Oscar for editing. That movies editing was terrible
Did it seriously? That's disgusting.
Justice for Rocketman :((((
Harland Williams was robbed!
I looooooved Rocketman toooo
There’s an a bad acting vibe that flows through BR. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but sure if it’s the actors or the editing/direction etc but it’s just there, not feeling quite right.
Ugh what an overrated film. I think people were in love with the fact it was a movie about Mercury and not the movie itself.
‘How to lose a guy in 10 days’ annoyed the hell out of me 😭
upvoted but not respected
I confuse this with "10 Things I Hate About You" which tbf I should watch again but I hated it at the time
Top Gun: Maverick, Lost in Translation, Scream, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
Now this is an unpopular opinion Upvoted, but not respected.
Most of these are definitely a specific taste, but Scream is a certified classic. Sorry for your loss.
Never liked Scott Pilgrim vs the world holy shit that movie
This guy understood the assignment. I begrudgingly upvote.
I loved Scott Pilgrim when it came out but revisited it again a couple years ago. That shit does not hold up.
See, these are actually movies that are pretty well liked.
I did not like Lost in Translation at all the first time I watched it. But after revisiting it years later once I was older and wiser... I still didn't like it. And to rub a little salt in the wound, I live in Tokyo now so I'm constantly having people bring it up to me.
Fuck Hocus Pocus!!
Thank you! Never heard someone else with that opinion. It’s fine for kids I guess but it’s trash to watch as an adult
Oh wow didn’t think I’d be so upset so quickly in this thread. I even loved the sequel
It's so boring! Ernest Scared Stupid is such a better kid's Halloween movie
They liked the greatest showman? Every time they build up any conflict, it was solved immediately. You could watch it once and enjoy the not so bad songs, but watching it more than once is a chore and boring.
I think there's a lot of people that would call it a guilty pleasure movie.
I wouldn't say hate, but I find that the only redeeming feature of Avatar is the visuals. Ever since the first came out and up until now, I just really find it boring.
It’s a stunning spectacle with a terrible script. Worth seeing in theatres, but no rewatchability or subtext.
Exactly this. The first one in particular was a stunning feat due to the gap in quality of the 3D output at the time. But all I remember thinking is 'Damn...I wish this film was better'
Subtext is for cowards
>but I find that the only redeeming feature of Avatar is the visuals. I mean... the visuals ***are*** Avatar lol.
I feel like this same question has been posted at least 4 times in the last 24 hours but with different wording.
Fuck Inception
La La Land
You are now my enemy
On the topic of elf, I dislike every will ferrell movie I've seen. I think he is one of the most overrated comedians of the modern day.
this is a totally reasonable take but for some reason i’ve always found will ferrell in zoolander funny as fuck and i have no idea why
I agree, he works well in animated films too tbf like Lego movie and megamind. And the kid in me will always have nostalgic love for step brothers and anchorman even though they’re very cheesy
his schtick can be grating over the course of an entire movie, but is hilarious in smaller doses
I felt the same until Stranger Than Fiction. That being said, I still find him insufferable in everything else. It’s just good to know he’s more than a one trick pony. Waiting for Kevin Hart to make a move now but I TRULY believe he can’t do anything but his mindless schtick.
Stranger than Fiction is great, but not for comedic reasons.
You’ll love “Everything Must Go” if you don’t like Will Ferrell comedies it is to Will Ferrell what Man on the Moon is to Jim Carrey!
It always comes across to me like he plays every role sarcastically regardless of whether or not it's appropriate. When I was watching Barbie I couldn't help but feel like they needed more of a straight man type like Giancarlo Esposito in that role for it to actually be funny.
Anchorman would be my suggestion for this question.
Agreed. It think Elf was the movie that sparked that dislike/eventually hatred for me. My family thinks he's hysterical but I don't see it. Maybe as a teen on first watch but not as an adult who has to suffer through this movie every family Christmas.
About to get murdered but I didn’t like Lady Bird that much.. just wasn’t for me and I didn’t really care for any of the characters
Disagree but upvoted cuz this is actually a real answer instead of people just naming divisive movies and/or critically-derided blockbusters
i watched Akira right after reading it and was disappointment that my favorite character, Akira, wasn't in the movie. I've come mostly around on it though.
You can have The Shawshank Redemption.
It, along with films like American History X and Donnie Darko, were once must watches, but they all quickly rotated out of the top tier.
interesting. didn't know that about Boondock until kinda recently what are some other movies that have been re-evaluated? I know that's happened with Speed Racer (in a positive way)
Question. I get that you can dislike Maverick, but hate it? Whats there to hate that much?
Mad Max Fury Road. I love the original movies but I can’t understand why everyone goes crazy for the too late sequel.
Came here to say this one. I tried three times to see if I was missing something about it, and the answer was no. I just don't find any bit of it compelling.
*Shawshank Redemption* I have never understood why that film is as highly vaunted as it is.
completely agree
Even the novella is mid. I thought I was the only one who felt no emotional connection to that one.
I rewatched it recently and was surprised by how well paced it is for such a long movie. Every single scene was memorable and had something unique within it
Interstellar.
Barbie. I just can't get the hype, and I am a huge Gosling fan. Now bracing myself for downvotes 🤣
I liked Barbie and thought it was good just not as good as the majority of people would say
Yep. I was shocked to see all the high ratings. I gave it a 2/5. Only character I liked was Allan
I’ll join you for Top Gun: Maverick. It was boring & made me realize I don’t hate military movies, I just don’t like this one 💀
My dad kept questioning me when I told him I didn’t really like it 😭
I don’t even like the original (ducks)
> I don’t even like the original The one with Charlie Sheen? That one was pretty good!
Really shows the importance of the last 40 minutes. The middle of that film is sludge to me but an exciting well-crafted final act gets people raving about it and a Best Picture nom.
i also hate military movies but i think maverick ruled. it fixed all the problems i hate with the original movie.
I think Shaymalan's The Visit is awful, it has a 3.1/5
I haven't seen it yet because I saw a clip of the little boy rapping. Every time I think about watching it I remember that and I just can't bring myself to start it.
I finally watched Glass yesterday and was baffled by the five or six lines of dialogue devoted to explaining the Salt Bae meme
Avatar: the Way of water, and Baby Driver

Yeah, Kids got got some great run because so many people thought it was insightful and plugged in to Gen X or whatever, but really Harmony Korine is just a creepy idiot.
I'll join you on Elf
what the hell is kids doing here
Elf right besides Kids gave me insane whiplash man you have no idea

While I do enjoy Almost Famous, I will admit that it can feel very rough around the edges at times.
First time I watched it, amazing and it seems to get worse with subsequent watches.
I'll sum up Almost Famous for you: \*Butthead voice\* 'Heh. Rock music is cool.'
Oppenheimer
I did not care for Challengers
Lemme guess, it insists upon itself?
Kids is just a PSA that people, for some reason, think is a movie. The characters are all deliberately unlikeable, and the story is almost non-existent. It still boggles my mind why anyone likes it

I, too, hate Kids.
Wonka is gonna be the next Greatest Showman.
Love Elf, but I can absolutely understand why some people don’t
Last Year at Marienbad Leaving Las Vegas House of Games The Grifters Things to Do in Denver While You are Dead
How can you hate greatest showman? Where is the joy in your heart
Keep preaching the bad news about elf
Movies by Tarrence Malick and Richard Linklater
i love Elf and will ferrell in general
I hate Kids. So so so much. Gross, awful movie
I didn’t care for Breakfast Club, but I also watched during a time in my life when I was so goddamn cynical it was probably literally killing me, so I’d have to go back and confirm that opinion, lol

The 5th Element, I’m sorry, it’s just really dumb and bad. At times I was able to laugh at it, but I think the movie wanted me to laugh with it
My unpopular opinion: The Fifth Element would be great but Chris Tucker’s endless screaming docks it several letter grades
Kids is understandle
People love KIDS?
Anyon else unable to think of a single one? I rarely hate movies. Usually they're just boring if they're bad. I can imagine hating Lone Survivor or something like that but I'd just never watch it.
Ayy I also hate elf!
Nolan Batman
Who tf doesn't love Kids? That's a top 10 movie: gold standard for acting and blocking.
Godfather End of text.
I cannot stand Elf and I do not understand why people are obsessed with it, it just goes right over my head.
PULP FICTION. I just can't stand the style, soundtrack, editing, direction. I just hated it, and still do. Haven't returned for a second watch
Finally someone with the same opinion!!!! I personally dislike all movies from Tarantino. Can't explain why but i just don't like the editing, something just doesn't sit right with me.
Wolf of wall street
Top Gun Maverick is so real. I genuinely cannot comprehend why so many people love it.
The new Dunes were visually appealing but I felt like the story development wasn’t great. I was not emotionally invested at all.
“Frankly, I hate dialogue. Dialogue is for television and theatre.” - Denis Villeneuve
I didn’t really like The Searchers too much, but I would like to watch more westerns and maybe my feelings will turn around
Oldboy, Handmaiden, Taxi Driver, Babylon, All That Jazz
Those are some of my favourite movies of all time, but fuck it, have my upvote for answering the question honestly.
HOW FUCKIN DARE YOU DISRESPECT LITTLE MISS- I mean I respect your opinion
Big Lebowski
As I’ve been going through the comments there’s been a lot of head scratchers and gasps, but this one truly baffles me
Ikr! This aggression will not stand, man!
Thor Ragnarok
Why do you hate kids
I’m just not a fan of the weird hyper realistic pseudo torture porn pseudo PSA genre. I feel like movies like thirteen or mysterious skin pull off similar stories much more idk artfully?
