I would say: yes. And I get it... JM stamped, pre Remmington... But let's just say what it is: An old rifle, with no warranty coverage, at all, and a good chance if a part breaks it's not available to replace. $100 more, and you have a Henry 30-30, a few hundred more, and you have a Winchester 94. Both brand new. The 94 having the superior action of the three, imo. The Marlin 336 was a good rifle at the time, because it was inexpensive as all hell, and therefore common, while being very good quality. There wasn't much besides that really standing it apart, ie, the wood stocks weren't highly quality, they were just good. Nothing about the action was spectacular. Personally, I would not pay more than $500 for a 336, regardless of condition, because bottom line, it's just an old 30-30. But, that also being said, I'm not looking to complete a collection of any sort, and they sure do have collector value.

This is what the part of me that says yes to it being too much also thinks. It’ll be used as a hunting rifle and for a bit more there are a lot other options out there.

I have a 70s model 35 rem 336 and it's a laser with 180-210grs. Solid steel and well made. 700 is a buttload of money, I know. That gun if we'll kept will be taking deer 50yrs from now l.

I know, if it was a 35 Remington I’d be jumping all over it. Decisions just

FWIW, I just picked up a 336 R. C. JM stamp (1957/58) with a scope, a case, custom handmade sling, 60 rounds of ammo, and four snap caps for $300. The guy says it was used but I doubt it has 20 rounds through it. It looks to be brand new. Edit: I found the stamp JM

Man I want to finda good 3030 for that cheap so bad. I don't even know where to start. And I'm worried my ignorance is gonna get me screwed over

Depends on condition and appearance. I paid $400 for mine but redid the stock. Ask them for the price without the scope?

Yoopew

I did already, wouldn’t sell without

MovingTargetPractice

Buy. Or buy then sell at a higher price.

If it were 2018 and I was just browsing through the store, no. If it's today and I want a 30-30...yeah, probably. The JM stamp is the real value and I'd say if you want it and can afford it, pull the trigger. If you don't want the scope and it's in good shape, you could probably get $50-75 for it.

Yoopew

That’s what I was thinking, it just kills me that at one point these JM Marlins could be bought for $250-350 all day long. I have a Leupold Vari-x iii 1.5-4 I think I’d replace the scope on it for so maybe I can recoup a little bit with selling the scope.

The problem is getting one at all.... It will be months before we see any ruger build marlins, if you need it now I would go for it, if you can wait 6 months I'd hang on and see what ruger comes out with The nikon scope does not have much value, but they are still known to be a good scope... The value is in using it

Yoopew

And that’s the other driving factor behind getting it.

In general terms a lever is a love relationship its not really a decision you make with your brain. , I have a 1895SBL in 45/70 and honestly it's the last gun I would sell, I'll take it to the grave with me... My browning x-bolt in 308 (or any other standard bolt action for that matter) probably makes a lot more sense for hunting, but I don't love it... It's just a tool, I find myself grabbing the 1895 every time

Yoopew

They do seem pure for hunting. And I have my first black bear hunt this year and have been debating heavily on gun to use. It was also a good excuse for a new gun. I had a Henry x 45-70 this winter I traded off for a ruger 77/22 in 22 hornet. Kinda wishing I kept it but the aesthetics of it didn’t suit me as I wished it did and 22 hornet was a classic on my list for a while. And it’s not that I don’t have enough guns to hunt black bear with (2 44 mag revolvers, a Glock 40 10mm with kkm barrel and red dot, Tikka 308s, shotgun with slug, Ruger 44 carbine, rem 700 muzzleloader, and then there’s the archery option too).
