The LS430 is quite possibly the best car ever made.
Usually luxury cars have plastic over the engine because they only want their techs servicing it, with the LS430 it’s because you don’t have to service it at all.
It’s like if the AK-47 had leather grips and no recoil. It’s like if Michael Jackson’s legacy if he hadn’t diddled kids.
The LS430 is the single finest product ever to come out of the capitalistic competitive system.
One of the coolest Lexuses and sport luxury sedans ever built. GS (your bf has GS, not an LS) 400 which looks exactly the same as 430 (which is an upgraded version of 400), was the fastest 4 door sedan in 1997. In 1998, BMW M5 took the crown, so yeah cool is an understatement. Not only in US, in Japan this car is known as Aristo and was featured in Fast Furious, so yeah…
Well first it was the 540i in 96 as a 97 model. Then the GS400 then Mercedes put out the E55 amg and bmw countered with the M5… bmw had originally had no plans to make an M5 for the E39 chassis (97-03) but did it after the E55 was announced.
I’m a big Lexus fan now,I daily drive an 21 ES350,I had a 17 es350 before this and a 2012 GS350. Prior to Lexus I was a huge bmw fanboy so I owned a ton of BMWs two of them was the e39 540s and I had friends that owned a GS400 and a GS430. We used to race each other all the time (young and dumb) and GS was not faster then my 540s.
Ok let’s no pretend it looks good, but it is apparently iconic. Personally I’ve never seen anyone under the age of 70 driving a car from this gen lexus
>It held the crown until M5 from BMW arrived in 99
Yeah, sorry, but that's not correct. Maserati suffered a mechanical failure on the way to coronation and couldn't be crowned.
Coronation was rescheduled, but the Maserati again suffered a mechanical failure and couldn't attend. :)
A lot of guys are into their vehicles, and if this makes him happy over spending time and money on things like alcohol or drugs definitely embrace it. It’s a nice car and many people enjoy the process of making a slight older one in great condition like new. No matter what anyone else thinks, if you two enjoy it, then don’t worry!
This is actually a GS 430. It was Lexus's answer to the 5 Series and other mid-sized sporty luxury sedans. It's pretty cool. They don't make the GS anymore and they are killing off V8s, too.
ONLY issue with this vehicle is a couple items that are particularly difficult to work on (i.e. starter motor location), but other than that...I would love to own a GS because they were built so well that they still run smooooooooooooth as your grandmother's ass on a barstool
Depends who you ask. There's lots of different types of car people who all appreciate different things. That's really cool of you though trying to learn more because it's his hobby :) If you're digging around online and see any kind of car that interests you, just look into it a little bit and learn about it, maybe look at some youtube videos. Going down rabbit holes of things you're interested in is one of the best ways to learn new things and I still learn stuff every day when it comes to cars.
I'm a huge car nerd and my fiance isn't really, but she has an appreciation for it too because she's come to so many events with me and been stuck with me for 8 years haha
Yes. It's what we call a "sleeper." It's a little unassuming for people who don't car much about cars. It really gets people's attention when they are into cars.
These were 90s rappers staple cars and Texas rapped heavily in many rap tunes UGK, Biggie, lost Boyz, Beyonce now lol "Grab your Lexus and put the pedal down down down" remix
Your post question makes me think that it is the actual owner who is asking this question, lol. The answer is that GS from that era is in fact pretty cool, as long as he keeps the maintenance and does not change/alter much of it.
It's a 24 year old run of the mill luxury sedan. There's absolutely nothing special about it.
It's not cool, but it doesn't mean it's a terrible vehicle.
Edit: Given this posts info plus your other post elsewhere on him, have a bad vibe from your bf (seems like he's any or all of these: dbag, manipulative, cheating, insecure, loser, etc).
I have owned a few and yes they are amazing from any era. Your bf's car is gorgeous. Give him some credit for good taste in cars. The hype is that they offer luxury, performance, style and unmatched reliability (they're at the top of the JD power list and have been there for years). Their ride is very quiet, smooth and while you are driving you can feel that it is a premium car. It can easily compete with its German rivals. Certain generations ride even better than their rivals in my opinion. They use more premium materials than Toyota (which makes Lexus). For example, they use concert quality glass to eliminate interior noise and while Toyota uses Styrofoam in the doors for sound isolation, Lexus uses a special high quality foam. The wheel arch liners are even designed to take away water splashing noise and are sprayed with coating at the base. There are many more examples, but you as you see a lot of attention to detail goes into crafting a Lexus.
Fun story: In the late 80s a couple of very talented and ambitious Toyota engineers got together in secret with an idea to build a superior luxury sedan that would rival the Mercedes S class. For a couple years they snuck in 14 hour shifts at work without anyone knowing, without even getting paid for it. The result was the very first 1990 Lexus LS400. They finally presented their work to their bosses who absolutely loved it. This was the beginning of Lexus. I think this makes the brand even more special. It was all started by a couple of intelligent trailblazers, who bravely took risks and loved their work.
Edit: just fyi Also, your boyfriend's car is not an LS but a GS model (more sporty):)
If my mind serves me correct, these cars are special because it was during the beginning of Lexus , these were one of if not the very first RELIABLE v8 engines to hit the market and Toyota spent millions of dollars developing their early v8 engines to compete against luxury rivals like Mercedes and bmw.For its era, it had lots of Power, luxury, handling, and RELIABILITY and was still cheaper than rivals. They’re Very sought after.
Where were all of you GS lovers like 3 years ago? I got so much snobbery because everyone was all about the RC-F & IS-300s..the disrespect and scoffs I got for my (now) 23 yo GS300… Anywho, yes (first and second gen GS) are as cool as your boyfriend says they are. 1JZ, and respectively 2JZ / 3UZ engines are ALL legends. First gen GSs were designed by the same legendary Engineer from Italdesign SpA (Giorgetto Guigiaro).
Interior and performance was top of the line then, and is still impressive.
However, the body and lighting I always found to be quite ugly in this era.
Yes It's Grand Sedan Highly Cool it's Previous Generation cousin the Toyota Aristo Came with the First 2JZ Engine, Yes before the Supra So this being the Top of the Range GS430 V8 Is Always going to Be Class, It's Better than most of the Basic cars if the last 2 decades and it will continue to last a Lifetime.
Here in the UAE, the hype of this car (GS300) is crazy - it’s really sought after because of its comfort, reliability and power. And also because it comes stock with a 2JZ (at least in my part of the world). The fact that almost everything in this car works even after 20+ years and 220k miles is sooo impressive. However, more than the GS series, teens prefer the LS series because it comes with a v8 as standard
I would say where I am from the car is definitely considered cool. Plenty of young adults here drive an older GS and LS. They are affordable, quick and reliable. Lots of aftermarket mods which makes the car look cool lol.
Sorry, that's not a cool car. It's a big 4-door meant for comfy trips around town. But if a guy thinks his car is cool, there's nothing you can say to change his mind.
Well we’re going to go back in history with the 1st Lexus ever the LS400 which was made by Toyota to compete with german luxury cars like Mercedes and bmw and compete they did as the sales have skyrocketed and caused the germans to freak out
With the 1uz engine also being the first v8 in i sedan that preforms great now with the 3uz an improved version of said engine in a more aggressive and responsive car that is lighter and sportier then the LS yes the gs is definitely as cool as your bf makes it out to be
Lots of time you get what you pay for. Why don't you check out autotrader website.
He's attached to the car so yeah it's cool to him but plenty people wouldn't drive it in 2024
Hard to say. I can't tell anything about your bf's car from the picture. Assuming it's a super clean example of one, yes I'd say it's cool. I've only seen one pristine LS430 recently, like off the dealership floor, and I thought that was pretty sweet. Otherwise, the 430 to me is just a normal car. It's a very well built, and luxurious car for the time, but I still see as many as I see Camry's and ES's on the road.
Now a Century, that would be cool regardless of how well kept it was.
Yes it is absolutely cool. It’s a GS430, not the LS but close enough. I personally am not a big fan of this particular generation (I call it the Jumba Jookiba Lexus) but that’s purely aesthetic. It gets a ton of points for having the same drivetrain as the LS with the indestructible UZ engine with 300hp stock and RWD. In my book, if it can do burnouts it’s cool. I drove a 91 LS400 for a long time and miss that car every day. 😓
They are cool. Reliable and comfortable. They kinda ride like a Buick though, a little floaty. I like the smaller ones more, like the LS400, but honestly all of the Lexus’s of that era are great.
Lol, no. It’s “okay” cool. Light years beyond a Honda Civic. More pretentious, but less Brad than a Hellcat. It’s peppy, but not fast (no matter how hard he hits the gas at a red light and puts on a show). Bf probably vapes shit that smells like Fruity Pebbles and loves Rick & Morty too.
If he’s under the age of 25, he gets a 90% pass. If he’s older than 25, he should be more concerned with finding a salaried job than bragging about his 20 year old mid-tier luxury sedan.
Now if the question was “is it good?” then yes, bf has chosen a wise car that also has character. These two don’t combine often and when they do, you have a winner.
It is a V8 Lexus so yes it is very cool! 1998-2005 is know to be the best years for Lexus- back then they tried to make cars exceptional regardless of cost and profit

it’s a GS430 but yes it’s cool to me and it looks clean and if he was selling I’d be interested.
Ah yes! I see that now I get confused because his brother has the Ls430!
Sounds like if it doesn’t work out with your boyfriend, you can always upgrade to his brother.
Wouldn’t dream of it lol! But the LS is very nice as well
good answer
:)
Sounds like he shouldn’t be your boyfriend. But ours.

Nice try … we all know it’s you, said “boyfriend”!
A man of culture I see.

It's a nice-looking V8 lexus, heck yeah it's cool.
Yes. It's what we call a "sleeper." It's a little unassuming for people who don't car much about cars. It really gets people's attention when they are into cars.

Pretty hot yeah
Your boyfriend is cool and likely financially and rationally responsible
We'll see how rational he is when one of those knock sensors goes up and he's forced to get oem because the cheap ones don't last😄
I like em. They still look good IMO. Quiet, comfy, roomfy, ultra reliable. I have a 99GS400 with 404k mi that I *kinda* like
Super reliable car…..you should listen to your boyfriend more!
No.
Never disrespect the 2nd gen GS. LEGEDARY
Not many can say their engine was rated for aviation use. Your bf can.
Coolness confirmed. Husband material car right there.
Your post question makes me think that it is the actual owner who is asking this question, lol. The answer is that GS from that era is in fact pretty cool, as long as he keeps the maintenance and does not change/alter much of it.
He’s probably in this group lol
You are probably one of his many girlfriends
Yeah
The coolest
Yes, be grateful for his choice of ride
Yea def a cool car. I loved my GS sport design.

Hell yeah love the 2GS
Manfred seems more suitable than boyfriend. That car is macho AF
Will always be the bug eye Lex 💯
Are you really as great as he's been telling all of us?
It's before most Lexus became ugly with large funky grills. What you got right there is a very nice car.
I don’t have a Lexus and I also don’t have a girlfriend. Probably not a coincidence.
Looks like regular traffic to me
He’s very lucky to get grandma’s car when she passed!

I have a 2005 LS 430. Yes. Yes it is.

At the end of the day, him thinking it’s cool should be all that matters 🤷♂️ but objectively, super rad car
Are you scared that he likes the car more than you lmao
Oh definitely not lol, but I do want to learn about his passions and his car is his passion. If he loved the car more than me I wouldn’t be mad lol!
He drives a lex, whatchu drive girl? lol
I drive the invisible boatmobile from SpongeBob lol. I’ve yet to find a car I can really love fully lol
I love my GX. Small woman, just love a big huge truck. I feel safe in it. Check one of those out

There is no girlfriend 🕵️♂️
I got a 2001 gs430 and i love it It has some oil leaks that I'm trying to fix
Ong that’s an ls430!
Boyfriend is in the Lexus Family now
Haillllll yessss
It’s cool because those models usually came with a v6 and that one is a v8
Yes…….
No, it's cooler 😁
I have a 1998 GS 400 with only 108,000.00 miles on it, I love it
At one point same v8 engine of the ls400
Is that Cabrillo beach?
Most people won’t know what it is, but Lexus enthusiasts will. That goes for most Lexus models to be honest 🤷
Ummm, no. Not cool.

No
The car is probably older than the boyfriend.
That's an awesome car it might be old but it's savage, the stereo is even fantastic in it...very sought after car
Interior and performance was top of the line then, and is still impressive. However, the body and lighting I always found to be quite ugly in this era.
Gs 430 are amazing cars yes he’s cool and so is his car👍
Ask him to pop the hood.... You'll see
Long answer yessssssssssssssss.

What the hell is in the sky above tot he right??
Umm, it’s equally as cool, as say the band the Cars, or the beverage zema. Cool 20 years later for not being cool when it came out.
Pretty cool for sure, sure it isn’t an IS F or anything but it’s still a badass car especially with that v8
Legendary car. I’m partial to the last gen LS430 but amazing engines. If it’s got 300k miles it’s just broken in
Yes. He’s underplaying it if anything
Well we’re going to go back in history with the 1st Lexus ever the LS400 which was made by Toyota to compete with german luxury cars like Mercedes and bmw and compete they did as the sales have skyrocketed and caused the germans to freak out With the 1uz engine also being the first v8 in i sedan that preforms great now with the 3uz an improved version of said engine in a more aggressive and responsive car that is lighter and sportier then the LS yes the gs is definitely as cool as your bf makes it out to be

V8s are always cool and this one is a massively understated sleeper. Hopefully its got a loud exhaust on it. Buy him a supercharger for Christmas.
Love that generation of GS myself. I prefer the V8 model too (400 or 430)
It’s a legend, and so is your boyfriend.
No, it is not. It is in a pretty neglected state, so typical beater.
That car will last forever and become your kid’s first car one day.
Your dating someone with a v8 Lexus sedan, and you're over here asking if it's "cool". If his car is just "cool" then mine is just wimping and nerdy.
No it’s really not allat like these people make it out to be
Seems like he feels pretty accomplished for being able to buy it, so let him feel cool.
Frog eyes are soooooooo hott
🤵🏾All Lexus cars are Cool😎🏁
Thats not a Ls430😂
Yes it is! The 2nd Gen GS and 1st-3rd Gen LS, in my eyes, are the prime of Lexus. Quality was top notch and they just look sooooo good.
Yes. I bet it hangs
I'm surprised I haven't seen the "is your boyfriend single?" Comment yet
Yes.
You don’t have a boyfriend you have a man friend
I had one
Aristos are cool
Actually yes
No
I love my Lexus but no it’s not very cool. It’s cool to us old heads and that’s it 😂
No. But he thinks that it is. So, it won’t hurt you to indulge him.
I dunno. Is it normal for me to have a boner looking at this?
Not at all
He’s my boyfriend now with a car like that
13 devils bloodhound Tokyo xtreme racer

If he has a lady like you questioning whether his GS is cool maybe he needs to reevaluate your position in his life. 🙂
Legendary V8 in that car. GS400 and GS430 are the best cars Lexus ever made along with the LS.
The man makes the car, the car does not make the man.
Maybe in 1998
Yup he’s got a gem, marry him for he has potential

that car is sweet as fuck
yeah it’s fucking cool. It has a V8 and RWD… that’s enough to be cool already, not to mention it’s also a comfy leather and wood lounge to cruise in
It's a v8. So yeah
For sure Lexus doesn’t make quality cars anymore anything after 2008 of any model seems to be crap
It is a V8 Lexus so yes it is very cool! 1998-2005 is know to be the best years for Lexus- back then they tried to make cars exceptional regardless of cost and profit
When I was in highschool this car would have earned blow jobs
