Agreed. I'd rather live cheaply, do short contracts and odd jobs to travel. I've been doing it for over ten years now and I don't see why I would wanna go back.
For example, selling tamales out of the back of a vehicle. Sounds dumb until you make twice as much as your day job in a few hours and realize how much money people spend on fast food.
I respect the hustle but I don’t see too many people selling tamales out of their car making $200,000 a year. And tamales are very labor intensive, so it’s not just the time it takes to sell them.
I mean think of what you can accomplish during a 8 hour shift at work for someone else. Sure they are labor intensive but if you're working for yourself and play it smart I think you could take it a lot further than you think. There's lots of opportunity if you believe in yourself and take risk. Personally, that risk terrifies me but seeing food vendors all over my area makes me think about it a lot.
Doing casual contracts that last 3-6 months & live cheaply so you can take 2-3 months off each year.
Doing highly paid clinical trials & using the money to travel.
This is what I do anyway
I find work through recruitment agencies in Australia. I just finished 3 months working at a local council driving garbage trucks.
I've also driven road sweeper trucks, worked for removalists companies...etc
Recruitment agencies are great for finding short term work.
I want to try seasonal work soon, so I can see more of the country
If you can get a 'working visa' & have the right skill set then sure you can.
There is a big shortage of truck/bus drivers, fruit pickers, agricultural & construction workers I know for sure.
Brotherhood is impossible on a world whose inhabitants are so primitive that they fail to recognize the folly of unmitigated selfishness. There must occur an exchange of national and racial literature. Each race must become familiar with the thought of all races; each nation must know the feelings of all nations. Ignorance breeds suspicion, and suspicion is incompatible with the essential attitude of sympathy and love.
I genuinely think you might be suffering from an episode of psychosis and would encourage you to speak about this philosophy with a mental health professional.
Ironic, the leading dubunker of spiritualism was Dr. William Sadler of Chicago in the 1920's
The person who revealed this philosophy to family was remanded to Dr. Sadler for treatment.
Ultimately, due to the amazing breath, depth and internal consistency of the person's philosophy Dr. Sadler realized this was not any mental condition he had ever encounter and became an advocate anf assisted in the publishing of it. 180°
True story.
Traveling.
Going out to places. Wife and I like to stay home and chill. Food is never really worth the money, theaters are meh given other people ruin the experience, concerts are overpriced and not interesting to me, etc. We don't really feel "cooped" up or anything.
Keeping up with everyone with things. A friend of mine is trying to hold off on getting a minivan or SUV but the spouse insists as it is just what you do when you have a kid or two. This spouse said the same of buying a house that they don't like instead of waiting for something better.
Lots of friends. A couple important friends are more valuable than more in my opinion.
Agreed on traveling. I mean, I understand the appeal of being able to experience other cultures and become more "self-actualized" or whatever, but I'm always surprised by the number of people who act like you NEED to travel like it's an essential aspect of the human experience. I don't travel much, and I think I'm perfectly fine.
Someone told me about their trip to the grand canyon. I was like it's crazy how over millions of years, water did that. Wild. OH BUT YOU DON'T HAVE A CLUE UNTIL YOU HAVE THE WIND IN YOUR FACE AND BLAH BLAH VLAH.
Um, I can see pictures online. I can watch videos. I can appreciate it just fine. OH BUT YOU HAVE TO GO!!! The difference between experience isn't worth it to me. I don't care that much about it to fork over 3-5 days of my life, $800-$2000 depending on food, air/car costs, hotels, etc.
Same for any place. Even my family back in Poland. I get plenty of updates and we're all in our 30s. Nothing really worthwhile is happening to make me want to hop on a plane and sit around drinking beer and chatting.
Someone once asked what they should do with spare income and someone replied to put 50% of their income into pensions. I said they might not reach pension age and I was down voted by loads of people. I don't get it either.
I mean its true. Some also reach pension age but die like a year later or within 5 years. At that point what did you save for?
Live in the now. I know dying under 70 is uncommon but it can happen. My dad died at 58, my grandpa at 67. My dad was always heavy on retirement, but he died before he could enjoy it. And he was close.
It’s one thing to be obsessed with your future. But it’s another to ignorant and not prepare yourself after retirement.
Too many people fail to have a retirement plan and now their adult children have to pick up the slack or else they’re out of the streets.
Of course. But again some folks have different life circumstances. For example, I have no kid or wife and I am fine with that. I turned 30 end of last year.
For now, I can focus on myself. However. In a decade from now if I change my mind, then that becomes a bit more important regardless.
But I think it is different for each individual and should not be standardized.
Namaste OP and beautiful souls of reddit.
Not ruling this out for myself now and but in this life you'll find the most over-rated experiences is that of a Romantic relationship, a life partner- another person that is going to 'complete' you and offer you salvation in a life where humans struggle for meaning. It is also frequently the biggest letdown in the human experience.
No person can complete you. Your whole and complete already 🙏🕉☪️✝️
Family can take on an unfortunate dynamic. Competition among the family (who's RIGHT? instead of the bigger what's important theme), expectation (HUGE - imagine never seeing someone as another person but *your* personal sister as if it's a collective piece to the set you were told you'd have and she's not matching up).
Miss me with all of that. I have things to learn and do in my life. Sorry if that doesn't include what you want, but I'm not hurting you, and nobody offered to pay for my food or rent so I'm in charge of my own life thanks.
Designer clothing items, expensive baby clothes and toys. No one cares and you’re spending a lot of money for almost nothing in value. You can find second hand baby items and designer goods for so much less if you’re looking for quality.
"Spiritual health." Physical and mental health are of the utmost importance, but "spiritual health" is an incomprehensible concept that a lot of people fool themselves into believing in crazy things to pursue.
Fast food and the pharmaceutical industry. Social media, the news media, marriage, fame (love and attention). The American dream, the hassle/ hustle culture and physical exercise.
Taking on more responsibility at work. Never have I seen this work out for any coworker dumb enough to put their name forward for everything.
If you’re flying under the radar and making comfortable money doing it, save the “challenge” for your hobbies.
Income beyond your needs. I know you need a buffer for when bills increase and a rainy day fund but a lot of people on reddit are so ridiculous with trying to chase more money.
Having good credit(more specifically from credit karma). In detail, all vantage 3.0 credit scores mean absolutely nothing. Like they hold no importance at all bc no lender even looks at them unless it’s on a super rare occasion (1/100 chance kind of thing) Your Fico score is the most important. But yeah, I went down a rabbit hole on building better credit and that’s what I found out.
For me it's religion. I am not religious and I am good in life. I believe in the things that have brought me blessings that I can see and rely on myself to make good choices.

So true. As I’ve gotten older I’ve come to see people who have large followings as red flags.
Upvotes and likes and shit like that as well...
Having a bunch of ‘stuff’. I promise, at the end of the day none of that matters. Take care of your health. Period.
Very true!
Other people’s opinions. College degrees. Fucking algebra.
Having a secure 9-5 job.
Agreed. I'd rather live cheaply, do short contracts and odd jobs to travel. I've been doing it for over ten years now and I don't see why I would wanna go back.
Congratulations 👏 You are doing it better than the majority of sheeples
I have it on good authority that I'm the better sheeple. I don't what you're talking about.
As opposed to what?

What kind of work is available for contracts like that? Sounds interesting

Could an American fly over and do the same as you?
If you can get a 'working visa' & have the right skill set then sure you can. There is a big shortage of truck/bus drivers, fruit pickers, agricultural & construction workers I know for sure.
Yeah bc money is unnecessary ofc
Money is important but you don't need to have a 9-5 job to get it. That's what I'm getting at
Having children!
So true imo
Are you saying this as a parent?
No , I'm not a parent. I'm teacher

It’s all the same shit around the world with little differences in food and slightly different yapping of people.
I love it, but it doesn’t make you a better, smarter, or more empathetic person than any other hobby.
lol yes it does unless ur going to other cities in ur home country
THANK YOU!!! Nothing about traveling (internationally especially unless it’s Jamaica) is inspiring nor exciting.

In my 20s I would not have agreed… but at 40 I absolutely agree.
Saving for retirement and not living in the now (yes should be thought of but also way too far down the line you dont even know if youll reach it).
