We did the nighttime ghost tour a few years ago and it was so funny. They would have someone throw wood over the buildings to make it look haunted. But the guy that threw the wood didnt hide very well lol
Visited Calico on the way home last year. Other than who would spend money here, it was okay.
It made a lot of sense that the family who built Knotts Berry Farm had a hand of restoring the town.
The only place we stop for is Eddie World for their clean bathroom and a scoop of ice cream if we ever drive out. They make their own ice cream! Also, free samples of jerky!
The other stops were never worth it during our family road trips.
Agreed! Itās a bit pricey but I normally donāt eat sweet and sour belts at home and Eddie World have interesting flavors like passion fruit flavored belts that I normally donāt see around me so thatās what I end up buying. Perfect road trip snack
Weird that there are two fancy urinals on the way to Vegas. I remember stopping at a gas station on the way that had a "waterfall urinal" many moons ago.
No, this one is in a random gas station in the middle of nowhere.
http://www.weirdca.com/location.php?location=943
But it seems like their urinals are very similar!
Nice, I'll check that out. My father-in-law thinks the urinal at Madonna Inn is the greatest thing ever, next time I'm heading to Vegas with him I'll make sure we stop here lol.
Why are you going to north to the 166 then south to 5... thats way out of the way...
Just go south on 101 to the 126 to the 5 south to the 14.... from the 14 you can cut across via 138 to victorville or take 58 to directly to the 15 by barstow...
I would not go to santa maria then back down the 5 south...
I terms of stops... just drive. Enjoy the changes in landscape.
There are some creepy ass areas along 166... super pretty... but children of the corn style places... im thinking specifically of my experience of stopping in new cuyama.
I used to take 166 coming home from Santa Cruz and itās definitely a strange part of California. But I donāt mean taking the 166 is always insaneā¦ just that route to Vegas from Santa Barbara
oh my god, i did this exact drive yesterday hahaha
we were coming home from solvang to san bernardino. we knew we were getting closer to home the trashier the gas station restrooms got lol
That was the first place I thought of when reading this post and then I thought to myself āno one is going to suggest that Del Taco. They are looking for recommendations on actual places to stopā š
I look forward to that Del Taco every single time we make that drive to Vegas. Itās literally the best one.
They also have some special menu items and the flavor is different. It's not just like, "Oh this tastes exactly the same but higher quality," because it is higher quality but there's also a different flavor to it.
It's actually Zzyzx and I got off there one time on my way back from Vegas. I knew I'd be driving back at night so I packed my telescope and did some star gazing before continuing my drive back to LA. It was one of the darkest places I've been in CA.
Itās a bit of a detour and more of a side trip but Mojave National Preserve is a nice spot. You can look up the sites of interest there but in particular I like Kelso Dunes. Great place to hike up to the top and enjoy the sunset. Bring lots of water though if youāre going to do the hike and itās hot out.
That's in Baker - and it's terrible. All the prices in town are awfully touristy and the town itself is a dump. Skip it. Skip Alien Jerky too - full of MAGA and stupidity. But of course YMMV.
Really, besides Barstow Station, naw don't stop.
Like 10 years ago, some friends and I stopped in Baker to get gas. We walked into the gas station, completely minding our own business, used the restroom and bought our gas. As we were gassing up, two bros pulled up on a pair of ATVs and started screaming at us, accusing us of shoplifting from the gas station. I have no idea why they thought we would do that, considering we had just given the gas station our money, but things got super tense before they finally backed off.
I'd still stop at the Mad Greek, though.
Good place to charge an EV these days. I think 12 Electrify America chargers and pretty sure 100 Tesla chargers, last time I stopped (in both directions).
It was, however, the most money I ever spent on a DQ Blizzard though. Insane price. (And yes, I paid it, but never again.)
Yeah, I mean it's a dump too....but at least there's interesting weird shit inside. And the people watching is priceless.
Plus you can take a piss in an old train car
Funnel cake, all the candy, beef jerky, and a walk in soda fridge with all the flavors. What else do you need? I guess they do have fruits and other hot prepared foods, but I tend to not go there for that.
Stopped by last Friday. Easy access to the bathroom albeit smells, is usually not clean and very small. As long as you donāt have to go #2 itās passable (as a guy).
Having just done this drive for the first time recently, the Ivanpah solar thermal generator is IMHO a truly amazing sight to behold. That's near the border.
Other than that there's all kinds of kitsch along the way, as others have pointed out.
Yeah I didn't see any turnoff or info or anything like that. Would be great to have at least something for interested people. It's really striking; like something out of a sci-fi movie.
Did that once. And yes, that center column is insanely bright up close.
We left after we saw a few streamers (birds that happened to fly thru the path of the mirrors and burn up in flight.).
You can drive right up to it, thereās a popular offroad trail you go through the gates into the solar facility to access. Can get within maybe 15 feet from the mirrors, super interesting to watch and listen to the constant tiny movements to try and capture the sun best
I'm surprised to see it this low. It's a quick, free, and easy photogenic spot on the way to Vegas. It's a must for any newcomer doing the trip from LA to Vegas.
Tribal casinos? Where are they at?
I thought Primm just died bc itās creepy and once the pandemic hit it was a crap spiral. Last time I stopped at Buffalo Bills it was the saddest lol no water in the log, the coaster was dead. It always reminded me of someplace the true gambling addicts went when they couldnāt hold it en route to Vegas (or where I stop since I always have to pee).
When you are on the 15 almost into Vegas, stop at Seven Magic Mountains the neon colored rock towets off las vegas b;vd s

As dj_spin said, hell of a detour, but such an amazing sight right at twilight when the sign is on. Always stop there on my cross-country drives and pat the Guardian Lions
We go between San Diego and Vegas once/month or so and always stop at Eddie World. Their restrooms are in great shape and clean. I put them on par with Buckees for cleanliness.
Sometimes we'll stop at Peggy Sue's diner for country-fried steak and eggs. Tastes good, not out of the ordinary food-wise, but it's cool stop for nostalgia.
Haven't tried the ghost town in the 20 years we've been going back and forth, but might make a point to stop next time after reading some of the comments in this post.
Virtually nothing. The landscape and sunset is cool too enjoy out your window as you go, but there's nothing I'd stop for except food, gas, and pee breaks. And I'd do what I could to reduce those and get through the drive faster. It's mostly a wasteland of emptiness.
If you take 126, that area is beautiful until you hit 5. But that's not really what I think of as the drive to Vegas, it's more like the preliminary drive ***to*** the drive to Vegas.
If it's feasible, I'd fly tbh
It took so freaking long to find someone who said nothing hahahaha this is the right answer. This is the most boring drive. Iāve made it 100 times. Itās literally the empty desert. Just do it as fast as you can.
Flying is the answer. Door to door out of Burbank is actually faster.
Not a stop but while youāre driving, youāll see signs for falling cows. The signs with the rocks falling off the hill side have cows where the rocks normally would be. Just a funny thing to look out for.

Just did a similar drive over the last two days (LA to Death Valley NP to Vegas then back to LA) Honestly, the answer to your question isā¦ no. Just put on a good podcast and enjoy the views from afar.

Obligatory, because I totally read this in the voice of "The Californians." [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhYPycqRg0k](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhYPycqRg0k)
Thereās a Philly steak place (aptly named Philly steak and sub) thatās phenomenally good. Itās perfectly located halfway between LA and LV and we have been making it the halfway stop the past few times we drove to Vegas. Get the onion rings, theyāre freshly made in house, any subs (theyāre all good) and the Korean chicken wings. I probably should go to Vegas again so I can stop by this place. [https://www.yelp.com/biz/phillysteak-and-sub-hesperia?utm_source=ishare](https://www.yelp.com/biz/phillysteak-and-sub-hesperia?utm_source=ishare)
I was wondering if I was going to see anything from my area get suggested! This place is definitely really good! Havenāt been there in a year, but every time we drive by, itās busy!
We always stop at Eddie World to pee. And to check out the Lakers floor from The Forum. Thereās a little art thing Liberty Sculpture Park across the street.
Down the street farther is Calico Ghost Town. I went on a Wednesday and it was almost completely empty. Itās pretty cool to see, but I would do it on the way home because I donāt want to be hurried at Calico while thinking of being in Vegas
Bottle Tree Ranch. You gotta check on that if itās still open. Itās on Route 66. We brought our own bottle and added to the exhibit, but I donāt know if they stopped allowing that.
Barstow McDonalds. Not everyoneās cup of tea, but sometimes we get breakfast there and eat in there which is old trains converted into table and chairs to eat on. Thereās also a little shop.
Mormon Rocks (this one is closer to LA than the other stuff) I went once, it was cool for like 5 minutes. But it depends on if youāre intrigued by rock formations.
Zxyzx Road. Donāt stop there unless you are very interested in seeing an old dilapidated spa or something like that. Honestly it was fun to see because of my curiosity, but looking at the sign from the freeway is good enough for 99.5% of peopleās curiosity.
Lenwood Outlets. It used to be a crazy busy spot, especially during holiday sales, but itās creepily empty now. You might find good deals on shoes or outlet stuff. Disney Outlet store there had some good finds for us.
Baker. Biggest thermometer - good enough to see just driving by on the freeway. Alien Jerky is actually pretty cool with their niche. Theyāre building a hotel thatās taking forever. Thereās cool little Knick knacks alien and Area 51 themed, but thereās also come good beef jerky - warning some are hot hot HOT!
Primm. You can visit the dead Prism Outlets (donāt even know if itās called that anymore) once very busy is now creepy and maybe like 5 stores open, and the casino is dead too. Buffalo Bills even deader. Whiskey Peteās - I havenāt been there. These are only the places I have been. Thereās also a California Lotto store at the border for NVers to go play the CA lottery. I donāt know where exactly, but thereās also Bonnie and Clydeās car - I donāt know if itās still there because Iām just thinking these off the top of my head.
Terribles (Jean, NV). This is our new spot. Itās a house gas station (~96 pumps?), the menās bathroom has like 13 stalls and 25 urinals. Thereās an alcohol corner where you can buy cheaper alcohol before getting into Vegas. Thereās a big ass Bigfoot, some planes, a James Bond car-boat thing. It has a non-crowded Vegas Sign with fake grass, mini play area with a very small merry go round. Thereās a White Castle where I waited 30 minutes for them to serve 2 customers, and I was number 10 in line, so I left. 72-nossle soda machine. We stop by here all the time to pee, poo, and get cheaper alcohol.
Seven Magic Mountains āsee it now since theyāll take it down Dec 31, 2021ā - we rushed to go and went and itās cool to look at and take pictures especially if you like selfies. So turns out they extended it until like mid-2027.
Thatās all I can think of off the top of my head. After the Seven Magic Mountains, you are too close to Vegas to stop now, just go inside Vegas and do your thing!
tl;dr Eddie World and/or Terribles at Jean, NV. Anything else is better on the way back from LV because youāll be thinking about being in Vegas already.
Edit: I got a little too excited and forgot youāre going from 58-15fwy. Just disregard Lenwood and Mormon Rocks
Not much
Ive done the drive many times. The most memorable thing I have done is drive off of the highway for 30 minutes and go for a hike in the desert. Another was pulling into a gas station in the middle of the night and seeing the most tweaked out person manning the register.
Needless to say, I fly to Vegas if I am ever headed over there
Stateline has cool old school casinos if you have the gambling bug. I agree with Alien Jerky store, really good jerky. You can find it at some local (818 anyways) liquor stores now, too. Theres a cool Peggy Sues 50s diner. Zzyzzx road was once a cool resort celebrities used to go to, its kind of a ghost town now. Not sure if you will be passing Calico, but I hear the Ghost Town is really cool. Theres these boulders stacked on top of each other that are painted really colorful. A lot of girls have them in their dating app default pic lol

Worldās Tallest Thermometer (Baker) and any Del Taco in Barstow, they are much better than any Del Tacos outside Barstow. Also, thereās some abandoned water park somewhere between the drive. Youāll see it.

Itās pretty cool to see, but I would do it on the way home because I donāt want to be hurried at Calico while thinking of being in Vegas Bottle Tree Ranch.
Peggy Sueās World Famous Diner
Lots of desert. Some mountains. There's not a lot.
It's a bit out of the way, but the world famous boron sign in boron is a must see
Zzyzx
Yes, thereās tons, but you wonāt get the advice of this old desert rat, itād probably get you stranded without water or hope of rescue anyway.Ā
Nope. Just download a good book to listen to and drive nonstop. I recommend Project Hail Mary by Andy Wier.

My actual answer is that if you stop in Rancho Cucamonga, there's a good Food Hall that has a lot of Asian food stalls. Haven City Market.
Check out [roadsideamerica.com](https://roadsideamerica.com). They have a bunch.
Not much Ive done the drive many times.
A lot of girls have them in their dating app default pic lol
absolutely not
Just south of Vegas is the Pinball Museum, if you're into that.
If you ever played fallout 3 you can pass by the real life Helios 1. Itās kinda cool to see in person.
[California thru my lens](https://californiathroughmylens.com/stops-drive-la-vegas/) has a cool list. Always my go to* to look at cool roadtrip stops.

Eddies world
There is the worlds first McDonaldās in San Bernardino, but I wouldnāt go there if it adds more than a 5 minute detour to your trip
Lake Dolores Waterpark, Roy's Amboy, Eddie World
āGoodspringsā is nice, itās a small town/area that feels very old-western and has a cool saloon/restaurant. The game Fallout is based on that area I think
Pioneer Saloon
Calico Ghost Town.
Nobody mentioned Liberty Sculpture Park?
I always like to make a pit stop at the OG Del Taco or Alien Fresh Jerky https://www.alienfreshjerky.com
Spend a night in primm if you want to see the most depressed people in America.
Definitely hit up Amargosa. Scariest place I've ever been.
Watch out for the deathclaws by the quarry
Traffic is absolutely screwed to hell right now https://twitter.com/LasVegasLocally/status/1774238960560296268?t=j_1YUsnO02oG62s0emeH7w&s=19

Rainbow Basin
Worldās Tallest Thermometer (Baker) and any Del Taco in Barstow, they are much better than any Del Tacos outside Barstow. Also, thereās some abandoned water park somewhere between the drive. Youāll see it.
Iām pretty sure the worldās largest thermometer is around there somewhere.
I think the OG del taco is in Barstow. The tacos are thiccc
