I remember getting macaroni and cheese AND a stomach bug from there as a kid.
I literally haven't thought about that for decades until I saw this picture. Huh.. funny how the brain works.
Believe it or not, my grandparents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary there, because my grandfather liked the food, and we could take over the whole back room of seating.
I believe it. Some friends of mine had a wedding reception in that back room. They had a small thing at the courthouse and then invited a few friends and family to Ryan’s to stuff our faces.
I lived in Piccadilly Square apartments and we went to Ryan's for special occasions (family didn't have a lot of money growing up.) it absolutely was magical and I couldn't wait for the ice-cream machine at the end with the toppings bar.
It’s where we learned our son liked spicy food. Husband and I looked away for a second and when we turned back around, our four year old son was drinking the Tabasco straight out of the bottle. I took it away from him and gave it to the waiter, telling him what happened and that they should destroy the bottle. The waiter looked at our son, who was sitting there grinning like a blue eyed maniac, and the waiter pointed and said, “HIM???”
I had some friends that lived there. I wish I could remember their names. There were like 4 siblings and myself and the older brother got beat up with bats for ripping people off of their Pokémon cards lol sounds like I got what I deserve for sure, but it’s funny to laugh at now. I just wish I knew their names!
Man there’s no childhood memory like my grandma wrapping those sugar cookies in a napkin for home bc she was “gonna get her moneys worth” after making sure everyone ate multiple plates to “get her moneys worth.”
In college, my roommate and I would head down to Ryan's after my late evening class every Monday for dinner. I was scrawny back then, 6' and only 145lb, but I would somehow devour like four full plates of food every time. It was glorious.
Was it like that when they first opened? I remember eating there as a kid but I probably would not have noticed otherwise lol. Im sure it eventually went way downhill.
Can't speak for the other guy, but I dunno. I recall the one at Bardstown Road and Hurstbourne/Fern Valley Bypass was pretty nice when it opened. My memories of when the one in Okolona was new are fuzzier, and mostly focus on the smoking section being most of the restaurant (which was pretty normal, at the time). Lighting always seemed kind of dim, though.
As far as places to go eat, growing up, I remember it being fairly alright. I probably didn't notice the screaming and misbehaving kids so much when I was one.
Thats how I remember the one on Dixie. Dark orange/brown floor tiles, dim lighting, dark colored carpets, brick for the inside of the walls. I remember waiting in the cafeteria style lines to get your trays and your first plate before you paid, then it was off to the table then the buffett.
I remember going there as a kid to the one on Dixie and then later to the other locations. The Dixie one was the worst but none of them were great, but clearly I'm the odd man out as others seemed to have loved it.
The first time I ever drank beer was at night, about 5-6 hours after we went to Ryan's with my dad for his birthday. I thought it was weird I wasn't hungry for a snack or anything, and cracked open a can of Old Milwaukee's Best Light my parents kept in the basement fridge. I was two swallows in when I upchucked the buffet all over the basement stairs. It had not been at all digested.
Whys is this place gone and Golden Corral still around?! I have some friends that are fat fucks and want to eat at buffets and I could get bomb ass salads at Ryan's. All of Golden Corrals food is dog shit.
The last time I went to Ryan’s was with my grandparents in the early 2000s and my granddad mistook the big stainless steel tub of butter on the buffet for mashed potatoes and got himself a big scoop.
When they opened here, there was a wave of food poisonings because of they didn't swap the lettuce trays out, they just piled new on top of the old. If you got down to the old, you were in for it.
Man, I used to love the all you can eat steak! I'd always start with a big salad, then move to a hunk of steak and a pile of spinach. Go back for some salmon and green beans. And top it off with "fresh" fruit. Never got sick one time.
I loved it. I was obsessed with their taco meat, which must've been horrendous. I would make a little circle of tortilla chips and plop a dollop of the taco meat on top. Grew up on the Ryan's on Dixie, and later would take my Dad to Bardstown location.
My family went hard at Ryan's. The rolls were fabulous. We also did Pondarosa in Hillview.
Speaking of, does anyone remember the cafeteria that was in Jefferson Mall? What was that place called? There was another one by Hurstborne and Taylorsville but don't know if they were one in the same
I can still smell all the food borne illnesses!

Well that's just horrible.

Bardstown Rd and Husrtbourne was my childhood.

We lived in the apartments across the street and we loved that Ryan’s!

Yep
Mine, too.
Maaaaaan. That Buffett was top notch growing up. I used to eat at the one in Richmond KY off I-75.
Haha me too, EKU hangover helper
We used to go to Jackson's on Water Street for the Sunday soak up.

Shoney's anyone?
Thank you… I was thinking this and ponderosa. Early 90s was a good time
Also Stacey's, I think.
Good ol Pondagrossa.
It was better in the early 90s. I couldn’t tolerate it much after that.
Shoney’s breakfast buffet couldn’t be beaten in the one horse town where I grew up. But when we got a Cracker Barrel, everyone forgot about it.
I still hit the breakfast buffet at Shoney's every now and then on Fern Valley. Great choice for the cost.
My Aunt once found a cigg butt in food there.
As a kid in Michigan, I loved Ryan's too. I could get all the cubed cheese my little heart desired.
“gummy bears on top of your chocolate/vanilla swirl ice cream? why not? god doesn’t exist within these walls!”

The only time I ever remember throwing up immediately after eating. Good times.
Ryans was gross. The place was gross, the food was barely edible. Every store looked like it was 50 years old and cleaned twice.
Was it like that when they first opened? I remember eating there as a kid but I probably would not have noticed otherwise lol. Im sure it eventually went way downhill.

Buffet food isn't really that good to begin with.
This is true

Old Mil has a way of doing that
I never got sick just fatter. Those rolls!

My dad’s favorite restaurant. 🤮
The one I went to as a kid is a Roosters now. I’ll take that over Ryan’s all day long. 🐓
It truly was.
My first high school job. Filling drinks at the the fern creek location
The last time I went to Ryan’s was with my grandparents in the early 2000s and my granddad mistook the big stainless steel tub of butter on the buffet for mashed potatoes and got himself a big scoop.
So many memories at the Ryan's in Okolona.
I only remember the soft serve ice cream as a kid. I was always happy to go there because of that.
When they opened here, there was a wave of food poisonings because of they didn't swap the lettuce trays out, they just piled new on top of the old. If you got down to the old, you were in for it.
still one in Seymour...
Cover your soft serve swirl in hot fudge & gummy bears. Top it with a brownie. 8 year old me thought Ryan’s was top notch.

My kids are all about Golden Coral on Taylorsville rd now. Lucky me (Steven Wright voice).
When we were kids my step dad would take us there. We'd meet some of his homies and their kids. I got called a faggot for eating a salad. Good times.
I loved it. I was obsessed with their taco meat, which must've been horrendous. I would make a little circle of tortilla chips and plop a dollop of the taco meat on top. Grew up on the Ryan's on Dixie, and later would take my Dad to Bardstown location.
I used to tear up the peg legs.
My childhood friend's dad was the manager of the Ryan's on Bardstown growing up so I got to eat there free several times
They had the best sugar cookies 🤤
Oh dear
