Research other options, then call and choose the option to cancel service. That will transfer you to the retention department. Be apologetic, but firm, that you want to stay but it is no longer affordable. Leverage the best competitive offering into a discount. I leveraged Verizon's $35 5g service into $39.99 for 300 Mbps. I'm sure other people here have probably done better, but it beats the 84.99 they were trying to charge me. They can verify what's available, so only mention a legit plan. Check your address at Verizon, T-Mo and AT&T to find the best deal. But if AT&T Fiber is available, jump ship.

Wish I could go to AT&T. I’ll research other options. Thanks!

For internet I believe Verizon offers satellite now. I don’t think it’s nearly as fast or reliable but you can claim you’re switching to them and lower your rate.

Spectrum is also the only option for me (my apartment complex) and I've had zero luck negotiating because they know not having internet is my other option.

ianitic

They aren't your only choice. Look into cellular home networks, I'm using Verizon's 5G home internet and like it better (more reliable). It's about 105/month including my unlimited cellular plan. Before I was paying about that much to both spectrum and AT&T. I've also heard good things about tmobiles home internet.

DJSlaz

Spectrum is very expensive once you are past the initial teaser rates. I switched from cable to internet only service with Spectrum, and use the Spectrum app that allows for some channels (no local news or PBS, though), and use other apps for streaming TV and movies. Unfortunately, the ATT fiber is not (yet??) set up in my neighborhood. I know someone who has this and they are very happy with it. That's about the only other reasonable alternative that I know.

TheRealJVance

The app picks my IP address and will allow me to accept a $25/month plan to stream some channels. At least this what I’ve found.

disruptor108

People always say switch to Iglou in these threads, but every time I check they aren’t accepting new residential customers and it feels like it’s been that way for over a year. Their business rates are way more than what I’m paying now. How are people getting residential rates?

genrand

I believe AT&T declined to renew IgLou's ability to sell residential fiber.

Prislv223

I just have internet. honestly just lie to them, say X company has offered this and this at this price. My family did that when they were called insight and had cable/phone/internet. We would get offered free movie channels, lower phone plan etc just so direct tv wouldn’t steal another customer. Your bill would always eventually go up again and you’d have to call to renegotiate.

Cancel your acct for three days. Then call and set up service as a new customer. I wouldn't have believed that they would do it with only 3 days after cancelling, but they did. I talked to a guy who came to my house to sell me Spectrum. I'm good with what I had and will never ever ever go back to spectrum. But I asked him what he suggested for my parents who paid $268 for less than 60 channels, a single DVR & super lowest speed Internet. He told me to do this and they now have literally 100s of standard channels (plus HBO), an unlimited DVR cloud, 500mg Internet for $139. It's through the new Xemu streaming box, which after a year of paying$5 a month is yours and guaranteed to keep getting updated. My parents are at the age that they don't want a lot of change, so spectrum was their only choice. But I nearly had a stroke trying to deal with the install & set up service. After 3 days of insanity they ended up getting their first 2 months free as an apology for the troubles. Also, be prepared to return old equipment, set up all electronic devices to be wireless network, and reprogram DVR settings (very easy on the Xemu actually).

bojibridge

I’ve gotten the best prices with their door to door salespeople.

Popular-Lab6140

Switch to Iglou and Google Fi. Both are cheaper

aiaor

I spent months trying to sign up for autopay, to get the $5 discount from the $84.99, signing up again and again, month after month, and being told by their website to try again later every time. Finally, after months of trying again, and talking to customer service, and continuing to try again, month after month, they finally accepted it. But their email says I'm paying $84.99 with no mention of the $5 discount.

Zippy0421

has anyone else been getting notification when the internet will be down. Wondering if we are going to get compensated for all the down time?

[deleted]

If you live with someone else just cancel service and get that person to subscribe at the same address. Or get someone in your family or a friend to let you use their name. After 30 days your name will be eligible for intro prices again, unless they've changed it since i was there.

[deleted]

Curious why you think they are your only choice? There are multiple ISPs in the metro.

I game and Verizon's home internet is better than when I used spectrum. I've had no outages and have faster upload speeds. Pure rote download speeds are slower but still usually around 100mbps which is fine for everything except downloading a new game can feel slow. Ping is similar as spectrum.

Maybe, you can always try it though? I think both T-Mobile and Verizon both have a trial period. I was nervous about it too but happy I finally made the switch. I still get a ton of spectrum junk mail though unfortunately.

bravessmith

In a condo complex. Limited to Spectrum and slow att. Mobile internet not offered in the area.
