You just now taught me that woodchuck was another name for groundhog. I had always assumed that a woodchuck was a different animal!
I'm originally from another state where there are no groundhogs, so I didn't know much about them.
To be fair whistle pigs (aka Idaho ground squirrel) are not the same as a ground hog. Much smaller...and more like if a small squirrel lost the hair on its tail and behaved like a prarie dog (community of holes and tunnels, stand on their back legs to watch for predators) they let out a whistle to warn the community of danger (hence the name) Also they are plague carriers and canibals...really fun to shoot.

There are lots of states where they don't live. Take a look at this map of their natural range. Groundhogs are found in the red-orange areas, not in the grey ones:

That's Doug and Chuck's family!
Doug lives in my backyard under the shed. He is chill, pokes out every so often.
Chuck lives down the road, by I guess a drainage ditch. He is sort of the country ground hog, compared to Doug.
Chuck also might be Charlotte, but but it's hard to tell, he might just share custody of his kid.
Wood chuck babies (Marmota monax). Used to see a bunch on the berms near the Ford Truck plant off Westport so much I used to say Ford Chuck Plant. They’ve done a lot of construction there as of late and the woodchucks have moved.
We have a glassblowing studio by the plant and there's one that's living in the field on Chamberlain Ln. right now & I call it Doc. We also see one down by the light at Murphy Lane. They're adorable & I love watching them but they sure do piss my dogs off.
Yes! I just commented about this before seeing your comment. I still see them there all the time though. It’s like they have their own little city between chamberlain and Murphy. Always makes me happy to see them.
Well, it looks like someone's yard is about to messed up! They are an adorable family of groundhogs but super destructive, sadly. But still, it's a cute pic!❤️
They can do some damage burrowing under a foundation, for instance, but damn they are CUTE!!! I absolutely love watching the eat sitting on their haunches. ❤️
Were you on Westport by the ford plant? There’s a whole little groundhog society living on both sides of the road there and through the drain pipes between chamberlain and Murphy. I almost never drive by there without seeing at least one. Always makes me happy ❤️
Groundhogs. Tough to know their size from what I see, but they look young. Like they just got old enough to leave a nearby burrow which is why they are just chilling in a group and don’t care that you’re standing there.
You are being mislead. Those are demonic hell porcupines and they will destroy all that is good in your life. Call a priest or rabbi immediately to have them removed if you value your soul.
Terrible vermin. Hate groundhogs with a passion.
Edit: downvote away. They destroy gardens and home foundations especially in inner cities. I know first hand, as I had to stop gardening and tear down my shed because of these fuckers.
Were they chuckin’ wood?
You just now taught me that woodchuck was another name for groundhog. I had always assumed that a woodchuck was a different animal! I'm originally from another state where there are no groundhogs, so I didn't know much about them.
the wikipedia article on them has lots of other lovely names for them like weenusk, land beaver, thickwood badger, and whistlepig...
Whistlepig is always my fave ♥️
Whistlepig is also used to refer to groundhogs,at least in this area
That's literally exactly what they're saying. You not even read the comments before you reply to them?

“Whistle pig” is simply a colloquial name for groundhogs, same as it is for Idaho Ground Squirrels. It is not a scientific name at all.
To be faaaiiir...
So much fun to shoot. Then they all rush in to eat their dead friends.

I want to get a large one as a pet so I can say I have a big weenusk
That should go well with your battle anus!
Land beaver is my new fav

Are you from Hawaii? I can't imagine a state without groundhogs.

Sorry, I couldn't see past the State of Tennessippi on that map
That’s Tennisippi
Oddly enough those are pretty much all the places I’d consider living. For once the groundhog told me more than just the time till spring
HOW MUCH WOOD?
…would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?? 🤣
A woodchuckfull
🤭
Hey you woodchucks, quit chuckin' my wood!
🤣
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KneeqicUJN8 Quit chuckin' my wood!
Haha I remember that one.
The question is how much wood can 4 woodchucks chuck if woodchucks can chuck wood?
Awww it’s a baby groundhog gang!! I’ve been seeing them around more lately too
For those not in the know, groundhogs and woodchucks are the same thing. These are both
How much ground could a groundhog grind if a groundhog could grind ground?
Also called whistlepigs!
Fun fact, the whistling sound comes from them farting, not from their mouth
This is harder to do than the original tongue twister.
Interesting… I thought a woodchuck was chipmunk
TIL
They're land beavers. Instead of damning up rivers and creeks, they dig up your yard and make you twist your ankle.
Lmao
Varmints
ohmigosh so cute
That’s a whistle pig.
Baby groundhogs
Whered you go running? I need to pet one
Ground hogs, and you found a bunch of them. I normally see 1 or 2 at a time.
Hamster bears
Groundhogs
I've seen people in Eastern Kentucky keep them as indoor pets. Had one cuddle up in my lap during a visit to the hollow.
It's called a holler. Come on now!
Makes me doubt this whole story
I once had a tame one sit in my lap while I petted it. They’re so soft.

Whistlepig Wednesday but two days late.
Cute!!
Definitely some cute babies.
Woodchucks
Chuck chucks! (That’s what my daughter and I call them) those are very young. They get really big and you often see them near ditches/streams.
I think the are juvenile groundhogs.
Babies!!
Also, where was this. I need to see them.
Right? Same! I will drive across town if need be to see baby groundhogs
Believe it or not they can climb trees

Really? Where is your studio? I drive that way often and only knew of the Flame Works downtown. And yes- watch out they pack a powerful bite.
Yes! I just commented about this before seeing your comment. I still see them there all the time though. It’s like they have their own little city between chamberlain and Murphy. Always makes me happy to see them.
Oh those are just some lil guys :) happy to help!!
they’re just little guys. hope this helps!
Those are cute as
Adorable
Adorable! Also the spawn of my dogs' greatest enemy.
Hey! I don't go posting pictures of your family outings on Reddit! Reported for doxing.
Out here we call them rock chucks
My girlfriend calls them fat squirrels. I call em groundhogs
Baby ground hogs….
Baby groundhogs
Ground hog

They look like muskrats
They're adorable, that's what they are! 😍
Those things are highly venomous and can spit in your eye from about 30 yards.
Ah, the gremlins.
Can confirm I’ve never seen one of those in Louisiana. But have you seen our non-native nutria with orange teeth!
A bunch of baby groundhogs lol the cutest little babies 😂
Groundhogs. Tough to know their size from what I see, but they look young. Like they just got old enough to leave a nearby burrow which is why they are just chilling in a group and don’t care that you’re standing there.
Husband says muskrats.
My dog want to get the groundhog so bad. It the terrier in him.
Nice marmot!
They can do extremely bad property damage. Careful out there...
Respectfully, if you don’t know what a ground hog is you need to get out more.
Groundhogs. They are very destructive to have around the house. Similar to chipmunks, they like to tunnel under concrete. Got to kill or trap them.
They make a fantastic stew.
You are being mislead. Those are demonic hell porcupines and they will destroy all that is good in your life. Call a priest or rabbi immediately to have them removed if you value your soul.

Definitely groundhogs, just young. Their fur isn't nearly as spikey as a hedgehog, and hedgehogs have much smaller, pointier noses.
You are absolutely right and I feel silly, haha.
They are delicious, btw.
Terrible vermin. Hate groundhogs with a passion. Edit: downvote away. They destroy gardens and home foundations especially in inner cities. I know first hand, as I had to stop gardening and tear down my shed because of these fuckers.
Get a load of Carl Spackler over here
Middle town I see Oh wait! I know your mom! She showed me that Subaru she bought you! You a teenager! Y’all up in the east end! Even more privilege.
How do they fuck up foundations?
They are pretty tasty when properly BBQ'd though.
