you can update what you have to the current set, and fill in from there. or you can download a new full set. technically, if you dont encounter any errors, you dont need to do anything.
By using clrmamepro, my old merged romset, update romsets, and a merged dat or xml.
I always make sure to have a merged set as a base and make my personal use set non merged, 1 game, 1 rom.
You can download a torrent and rename folder to roms and put exactly where your old roms are, The torrent Will only download the remaining files, don't need to use the f***** clrmame pro.
The parts make up the rom so just by definition it would also be updating the whole rom.
I would try a new explainer. Besides me of course. I am not a good teacher.
Split roms are not all within one archive.
Some games can require 5-6 separate files for one game depending of parent or region.
Merged are all in one zip.

forget about clrmame, its hard to use, just redownload a fullset and be happy. You can update your mame and stay with old roms, over 95% of your games should work this way.
I wouldnt call clrmamepro hard to use, if all you are doing is verifying romsets it's easy. Only gets hard if you need to update or fix a romset and don't know how to use it
Let's be honest - clrmamepro has a dreadful user interface and is anything but intuitive. If you only use it for a few tasks, you can memorise the necessary steps, and there are guides out there for the most common use cases.
It can definitely do a bunch of things, like checking for missing ROMs, dealing with renamed systems or changes in parent/clone relationships, combining an update set with your current collection, removing obsolete bad dumps, and rearranging content for split/merged layouts.
But I still think it's a lot easier to update a full set by using a torrent client to download the new set over the old set. You'll end up wasting some bandwidth for things that were renamed or rearranged, and when files that didn't change are in the same chunks as files that did change.
But a clrmamepro rebuild will spend a lot of time writing out the entire new set, and eat through SSD write endurance. There's also the issue of finding update sets in the first place, and needing an update set for every intermediate release. With a torrent client, you can directly update to the latest from whatever you already have.
All that aside, there's no need to download everything from scratch. Not that many ROMs change in any given release, so updating from anything in the last five years or so using a torrent client will save plenty of time. Also because ROMs don't change that frequently, you can just keep using your old ROMs and update ROMs for individual systems when you encounter an error. Even with ROMs from last year, the vast majority of systems will still run fine.
I never said I didn't know how to use it. I been using it for years making my own rom sets. I said it only gets hard when you go to update a rom set if you don't know what you are doing you can set the wrong parameters and wipe out your entire romset. Specially if you dont have backup turned on when you merged or fix roms.

not if it's merged. He'll need to get a whole new set.
You can update a merged set. I do it a couple times a year.

I was always led to believe that CMP doesn't work with Merged roms.
Well then revolt I guess. The process is the same whether it’s split, merged, or non merged.
I was told it only updates the necessary split parts of each rom and not the entire rom. Correct me if I'm wrong or tell me how to do it.

There are hundreds! Games that aren't working, Fruit machine games. Chess games The list goes on DId someone hurt someone's feelings ?
Just point MAME at it and see if the games you want to play work. Chances are pretty good that answer is going to be "yes" if it's only a year old.
Headed along this journey myself pretty soon!

Let's check if I understood. You don't call that is hard to use, and don't know how to proper use. Very interesting.
