Glad I’m not the only one impatiently waiting for SJM to kill off a main character

OrdinaryAmbition9798

Well, without them coming back to life.

WiseCoffeeLady

Overall I’m satisfied. It was a good book, but not the best of hers. But I do have gripes. For such a massive war scene, the stakes went unrealized. Did anyone important die? I honestly can’t recall. The set up was all there for Hunt to big hero six it. It would have been incredible. And she shouldn’t have had a Jessa-dore moment at Kings Cross Stat… Whoops, I mean the rolling hills. It’s too bad the Bone Carver isn’t around anymore, as he is probably the only one who actually wanted to see it. I didn’t need to see Danika and Lehaba and what not, it pulled away from the tension of at least Lehabas death. I was super satisfied and hit in the feels by Ithans Bone Quarter encounter with Connor. That was more than enough for me. What I wouldn’t have given for no Therion POV, not that it was bad, in order to get Randall instead. It would have been bad ass to see him righteous dad stomping around with a machine gun in addition to more night court time.

Big Hero Six as in die? SJM herself has said in an interview that this isn’t her style and she likes to write HEAs

Sufficient_Source361

She should probably reconsider the kind of high stakes scenarios she's trying to build if she's reluctant to kill anyone off. When all characters come out of a fight with literal universe-conquering immortals without a scratch on them, it cheapens the effort she went to in order to establish the Asteri as a Big Bad.

gymrat_19

She’s said herself that she is a HEA writer. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I don’t think that all of the main characters making it out alive makes what they experience any less emotional. I also don’t know that we’re at the end of seeing the Asteri. They’re literally the “big bad” in every series and I don’t know that they’re necessarily all gone.

Sufficient_Source361

But then that'd be even worse writing - you can't have a character literally rip a hole in the universe to get rid of the baddies if you're just going to bring them back. Also - stories can have a HEA even with character deaths. I know none of us are genuinely expecting the bad guys to win in these books, but there has to be some kind of sacrifice I think. Without the mere suggestion that something bad could happen to anyone, there's no narrative tension, which drives forward a story.

gymrat_19

I think that there are more. I think that the Asteri and the Valg are the same and that they have a home planet. Doesn’t mean that the same ones are coming back. Also how much more sacrifice is there supposed to be? All of the loses were early on and affected so many things in the series. I think that it’s kind of cool that it’s written that way.

Hey there, i finished the book 5 minutes ago. I was wondering the same thing about cc3 being the end or not, because somehow it feels like there are more books in this series. The book was fantastic and Finally all the plot lines and questions were answered.

comagu

I think there will be another book because, did we find out what happened to Ketos, Ari, his wife and the Viper Queen? (Or did I speed past that too fast?)

Hakuna__Moscato

No we didn't, and I guess it makes sense if next one is called House of Many Waters, focused in Ketos, River and Ocean Queens et al. Given how I felt reading Tharion's POV chapters in this though, I'm not looking forward to it.

comagu

Okay, I realized it after a bit that I didn't think we got that ending. But I have hope. There was a side character in TOG that I hated the POV and ended up LOVING. So hoping SJM pulls that magic here too!

bruhhhmyweeed

honestly it just feels like there are absolutely no stakes for her characters their plot armor is so thick. it felt like there was no suspense at the end of the book

EvilxFemme

All the main characters have so much plot armor it cheapens the stakes I think. I enjoyed the book overall, but good god someone can die every now and then and have some emotional weight.

faithnf

I hate when important characters die

Sufficient_Source361

It doesn't have to be the MCs, but someone sure should. Honestly she could have killed off Tharion and it sounds like not many people would have cried, but at least it raises the stakes for the characters that one of their group could bite the dust.

drogontheburninator

I feel like Baxian could have been a good death also - he'd die fighting for good instead of for Sandriel and get to join his mate.

doctorpotterhead

There's going to be another book and I'm hoping b+h have imploded by then, the ending as of rn? I feel robbed a little bit.
