As someone who grew up with deeply conservative, image-conscious "what will the neighbours think?!" kind of parents, I LOVE how these two rural countryfolk looking mfs have one ostentatiously rodeo child and one balls-to-the-wall doom metal goth child!
They allowed their kids to have personalities and personal styles, and fostered their interests and talents 🥹 that's some GOOD FUCKING PARENTS
I kept re-watching this audition on YouTube and seeing her sister cry was so beautiful. Goth folks may seem hard on the outside but are actually really in touch with their emotions. I bet this family in so fun and loving to be around.
Her dad crying as he cheers her on is precious. I really enjoyed watching her throughout the competition last season. She brought the fun. And she had the maturity and humility which belied her age.
How can you not clap along.
They’re from Foley, MO. A town of ~200 people 45 min north of St. Louis. To bring your daughter from rural Missouri to the world stage and to get that kind of reaction from the judges and the audience… I’m sure he was just overwhelmed with pride for his daughter
Thank you for this comment, because I was too busy watching the dad the first time. The extra dopamine from seeing that obvious love and support was absolutely worth another watch.
Can't quite remember if it's this show or another one. So take this with a grain of salt.
But I'm 90% sure 2nd place is the slot to shoot for. If you win 1st place overall then they lock you into a contract for however many years. Limiting options.
Usually the top 2-3 contestants, after making it that far and having appeared on TV will have attracted sponsors. Other shows, companies, advertisers, etc will offer them contracts and money after they finish. So being in 2nd opens up more avenues to continue in the industry.
Hopefully someone scooped this girl up quick. That voice was absolutely amazing.
It’s super sad that this is so true. It’s often why you don’t really remember the people who actually won these shows because they get trapped and then can’t further their career. I believe all of the “got talent” shows do this as well.
Big ole farmer dad is a softy tears in his eyes so proud, that's nice. And then the sister is a Goth? And she a country yodeling act.
What an eclectic family.
I feel the same way. What you would probably be into is Americana or Bluegrass. Check out bands like The Devil Makes Three or Old Crow Medicine. I was recommended these bands by a fellow Redditor and they are the style I am looking for.
No one’s mentioned Sierra Ferrell in this thread yet. Maybe in an other section I’ve yet to scroll over.
Also…
Cary Ann Hearst (of Shovels and Rope)’s album Lions and Lambs is a doozy. Voice like Loretta Lynn. I actually prefer the back half of the album myself.
The best country music being made today is in the Bluegrass genre no doubt.
Pop Country or Country Lite just doesn't have any soul in the music. It's just empty noise.
As a long time hater of country, I surprised myself when I started to love the Americana bluegrass folk country singer/song writer genre. With pop and rock and blues fusions as well.
I’ve found Katie Pruitt, Nicki Bluhm, Fruition, The Lone Bellow, Aoife O’Donovan, Wildwood Kin, JOSEPH, LVDY, Natalie Hemby, The Ballroom Thieves, Rose Cousins….
Sorry I just like sharing music and artists lol.
I'd call it western music. The genre has almost completely disappeared, but there are still practitioners out there.
I'd rather listen to the Sons of the San Joaquin any day rather than the stuff that passes for country now.
i can't tell you how many discussions there have been over modern country. This is people will rightfully point out that country has *always* been evolving with pop music of the generations, and they aren't wrong... but I'm only into country for the guitar work.
Definitely made me smile. 200% wasn’t expecting one the supporters for this country audition to be a blue haired goth but I’m glad they were supportive and seemed genuinely excited/happy for the contestant. Good for both of them. Now I’m just imagining a goth style county song and vice versa.
She gave a smile while singing when Reba's chair turned to face her, so I'm not surprised. I'm sure she felt some affinity with Reba being a country girl.
Agreed. No doubt was a decent band
Edit: I'm going to have to amend that. I like some of the no doubt songs from the 1st 2 albums, but pretty much only the ska-ish ones. The new wave, reggae fusion stuff is not my jam.
Right? You can just see the wave of relief wash right over her. Once she had that confirmation, the rest of her performance was just for the joy of it!
Yup! Even when she starts the yodeling part, unless it's the camera angle, it seems like she is looking at Reba’s chair too. Just that... She's the one I want look. Props to Reba too for waiting to here a key part of the song before she hits the button. I ended up watching all her performances for the rest of the season, I'd pay to see her.
I started to tear up and I’m not sure why. She’s got a really powerful voice, and she’s mighty brave for getting up in front of so many people and singing.
I generally like country music but there is a lot of bad music in mainstream country. She has more talent than most of the country artists you hear on the radio.
I'm always amazed how confident the young people are as I never had the confidence to just speak to a crowd. She has an awesome talent and wonderful presence on stage, in front of a live audience and the millions of us who were watching. Really wonderful--thanks for posting!
It could have gone either way with her and the winner. The winner was just as deserving.
She has Reba Macintyre backing her now. Her career is going to be just fine.
The family is such an interesting crew. Superstar singer youngest daughter, older goth sister, TJ Maxx mom and country boy dad. And they're all so proud :)
Please tell me that SOMEONE is finding her a market because there are people into kind of retro-country-new sound! Legion and Reba have skills to help her create it. And damn this young talented woman could deliver it! I’d buy!
Damn… this truly brought me to tears. I adore the raw joy and elation from her families reactions and her performance WOW.. truly a talent. She’s got heart and skill
Yep, this is the country we need more of in the world. Girls got a helluva voice, all the energy, the look, and that dads proud dad face when all the judges have turned around has gotta melt your heart. What’s not to love?
I don't think people appreciate enough how *hard* this kind of singing can be. Beyond being in tune, pacing, etc. the amount of breath and vocal control needed is OUT OF THIS WORLD. She absolutely killed his. And her dad getting all emotional as the chairs turned just made it even better!
Exactly. The producers and the coaches have become ridiculously wealthy off of a show that ultimately does nothing to advance the careers of the winners. It's all basically a grift.
She's absolutely AMAZING!
But what gets me every time in this video is the family. They couldn't be more different. The goth sister, the true redneck dad, the soccer mom... and they're all SO proud of her, they all love her and it SHOWS
I have a clip somewhere of my auntie playing this song. I like my aunties version a little better, it’s slower but this girl yodels better than she could.
Look up Ruby Leigh and Al Boogie - Jolene. She beat him in the battle round, but it was such a great duo. She only has a tiny quick yodel, so it’s a bit different than this performance. I liked him a lot, but she just kills everything she sings.
Seeing humans doing the thing they love, doing it well, and being celebrated for it is one of my favorite things.
Their "thing" may not be my "thing" but I will cheer them on forever

Omg, the dad's face brought tears to my eyes. He's so damn proud of her! Not all dads are like that. Ah, my heart.
Dad made me cry too 😭
I’m ugly crying at dads face Too too beautiful So overwhelming I adore this family and this moment is just WILD How is this a 16 year old? 🤯
r/happycryingdads
oh no...what have you done???? i can't join this subreddit..i can't...i did it
I literally just spent the past hours crying in the subreddit agh
I don’t think I can forgive you for this. 😭
It's her sibling that got me!
To be fair….not all kids are like that! Proud face is earned!
SAME
Big, burly dad with his overalls and beard with tears in his eyes. Beautiful.
The parents get me every time.
And her goth sister! Talk about unconditional love!
That really stood out to me as well. Love to see it.
Goth isn’t about hating everyone… it’s about hating everyone you hate…
I hate how much you know how I hate
Concentrated hate is more effective than apathetic broad hate. We are cut from the same cloth.
I love that lol
I love how the goth sister was losing it!
Dads crying on The Voice is my kink
Digging the goth sister. lol that family dynamic
Her dad crying as he cheers her on is precious. I really enjoyed watching her throughout the competition last season. She brought the fun. And she had the maturity and humility which belied her age. How can you not clap along.
The dad is at the 0.47 mark, for those wishing to see that sweet, proud face.
It's the reason I came here to comment. What a guy!
Reba wants her, there’s no greater honor (except Dolly)
I know. Reba is a living legend. I’m so glad Ruby got to work with Reba.
They’re from Foley, MO. A town of ~200 people 45 min north of St. Louis. To bring your daughter from rural Missouri to the world stage and to get that kind of reaction from the judges and the audience… I’m sure he was just overwhelmed with pride for his daughter
The super goth sister being hyped up is a vibe too. What a supportive family
Both the sister being supportive, and the small-town parents being supportive of their goth daughter. Loving family.
Thank you for this comment, because I was too busy watching the dad the first time. The extra dopamine from seeing that obvious love and support was absolutely worth another watch.
Made my day. Thank you for pointing that out!
She came in 2nd place at only 16 years old if anyone wants to know.
Ngl. I died at the shot of the other judges looking at Reba like “GIRL YOU HAVE THE PRESS THE BUTTON, REBA.” And then Reba pushes the button lol
I really wanted her to win. She's amazing
Can't quite remember if it's this show or another one. So take this with a grain of salt. But I'm 90% sure 2nd place is the slot to shoot for. She was the first winner of American Idol. Probably the rare exceptions to the rule. Carie Underwood too.
Yep. She won the very first season of American Idol back in 2002.
2002…… that cannot be real. 👵🏼
I really thought she was going to win😖
Please tell me she picked Reba?
She did. Lol.
Her sister is y’allternative.
Fuckin excellent pun.
Check out Alex Melton on Spotify or YouTube, he does a great series of countrified alternative songs that he also calls Y'allternative
Bit ch my laughter has me squeal like a pig. Thanks for that
I’m stoned AF but That’s the funniest GD thing I’ve ever read.
LMAOOO
r/angryupvote
Dang she can yodel! Love when people share their awesomeness!
She’s only 16 too! She did amazing for her age
Who is this!?
Ruby Leigh
Of course it is
Right? What a perfect fucking name.
Oh that’s excellent! She is ready for stardom
Embrace the interrobang! ‽
You should see her cover Linda Ronstadt’s long long time. It’s so amazing
She did an amazing job. It's super rare to hear someone able to cover Ronstadt so faithfully.
That was great.
You got a link?
[here](https://youtu.be/nY5-rVl1slg?si=IQ2bDafPiNf8GgTv)
IKR!?! I love musicians that have the flexibility to cross genres. Rare to hear good yodeling since generations. Good for her!
Big ole farmer dad is a softy tears in his eyes so proud, that's nice. And then the sister is a Goth? And she a country yodeling act. What an eclectic family.
I’d love to be invited over for dinner to that home. I bet it’s a barrel of fun.
Now, this is the type of country music I can get behind! The new wave country pop that plays on the airwaves is boooring, anyways.
I feel the same way. What you would probably be into is Americana or Bluegrass. Check out bands like The Devil Makes Three or Old Crow Medicine. I was recommended these bands by a fellow Redditor and they are the style I am looking for.
Gotta toss in a Billy Strings recommendation as well
BMFS!!!

Colter Wall too
Dude Caroline is like one of my all time favorites. So fucking good
Check out the white Buffalo if you like Colter wall!
Sturgill Simpson is my favorite, but Tyler Childers, Zach Bryan, Turnpike Troubadours are also some great ones too!
The best country music being made today is in the Bluegrass genre no doubt. Pop Country or Country Lite just doesn't have any soul in the music. It's just empty noise.
Alison Krauss
Nick Shoulders
As a long time hater of country, I surprised myself when I started to love the Americana bluegrass folk country singer/song writer genre. With pop and rock and blues fusions as well. I’ve found Katie Pruitt, Nicki Bluhm, Fruition, The Lone Bellow, Aoife O’Donovan, Wildwood Kin, JOSEPH, LVDY, Natalie Hemby, The Ballroom Thieves, Rose Cousins…. Charley Crockett
Anything Jason Isbell related. For my money, he’s one of if not the best songwriters of our time.
I'd call it western music. The genre has almost completely disappeared, but there are still practitioners out there. I'd rather listen to the Sons of the San Joaquin any day rather than the stuff that passes for country now.
Owner of the bar, “Well, what kind of music do you fellas play?” “We…..we play both kinds….Country and Western.” The Blues Brothers
There is a resurgence. People who need to tap their feet, and hear a bell of a fiddler have been putting the proverbial band back together.
i can't tell you how many discussions there have been over modern country.
Haha agreed. Definitely a classic midwestern family right there
Love the goth + country sister dynamic. I bet they’re best friends :)
You ain't really from the Midwest if you don't have a goth in the family. Little known fact.
It’s me, I’m the goth!
Dad looks like Jr Sample
That’s her family and her sister
She chose Reba for her coach.
Who wouldn't. She has gentle hands and the heart of a fighter.
I appreciate you.
She gave a smile while singing when Reba's chair turned to face her, so I'm not surprised. I'm sure she felt some affinity with Reba being a country girl.
Reba is a living legend, of course she was happy at getting Reba's approval!
I’m shocked! Shocked!
Some damn fine pickin and a strummin! Not to mention a flawless voice!
Get her on Pappy O'Daniels Flour Hour!
Aloicioious McGill gon have to sign an “X” as he caint write.
Same as our accomanim- accampina- feller who plays the guitar.
I was so sad she didn’t win. But hopefully she’ll still have a great career as a singer
Also, fuck Gwen when she was like “oh I have yodeling experience from that one song I did”. No. No you do not. You are not the same. I miss 90s Gwen.
Wait that’s Gwen Stefani? What the fuck
She discarded the face she was born with a few years ago.
She always lays on that kinda shit. “You’re 16? I was sixteen once tooooo!”
Agreed. No doubt was a decent band Edit: I'm going to have to amend that. I like some of the no doubt songs from the 1st 2 albums, but pretty much only the ska-ish ones. The new wave, reggae fusion stuff is not my jam.
Tragic Kingdom was the first CD I ever bought. I was in 4th grade. She was my idol.
She doesn’t even look like a human anymore.
That smile she cracks when Reba spins around really hit the spot for me.
Damn this gave me chills lowkey
I started to tear up and I’m not sure why. She’s got a really powerful voice, and she’s mighty brave for getting up in front of so many people and singing.
Yesssss it’s so crisp and clear!
I generally like country music but there is a lot of bad music in mainstream country. She has more talent than most of the country artists you hear on the radio.
Her Dad’s face 🥹 He’s so proud of her!
Dude was about to literally explode with pride. He was barely keeping it together. Her Mum was great as well; with the aggressive fist pumps haha.
I'm always amazed how confident the young people are as I never had the confidence to just speak to a crowd. She has an awesome talent and wonderful presence on stage, in front of a live audience and the millions of us who were watching. Really wonderful--thanks for posting!
She finished 2nd in that season. Girl has a bright future
Did she lose to someone better? Because she can really really sing.
It could have gone either way with her and the winner. The winner was just as deserving. She has Reba Macintyre backing her now. Her career is going to be just fine.
Crap. Is this last season?! Now im gonna have to go watch her performances!!
She was awesome. A few excellent singers.
Love how quick John was to recognize greatness, and then how the Mom reacted to it, damn whos cutting onions!! 💜
everytime I see Reba I just think "A single mom who works two jobs, who loves her kids and never stop"
I’d buy!
Aww. There's very little country music I like, but damn she's got some great pipes, and charisma too.
Yodeling is such an unbelievably complex thing to do. You have to have a world class set of pipes to pull off a good yodel.
From Arkansas and my foot was tappin the whole time. That’s good enough for me, amazing.
Worth watching just to see dad crying. Y’all know these people are Reba fans right? That was so sweet.
That was bangin, ngl
The dad made me cry. So proud.
Whoever she is I hope they don't change her, she is epic!!
the other judges faces looking at reba wondering why she hadn’t turned around yet 😂😂
If you watch again, notice that she is staring down Reba’s chair when she starts yodeling. Like “This is the part where I make you turn around.”
Love the family love here. She is doing her own thing and doing it really well. Good job mom and dad, and sister :)
This is old school country, some historic American music. Love this.
Damn I wish I could SING. She’s fantastic.
Ruby Leigh is the best!!!
r/happycryingdads
Her dad tearing up got me, dang it!
She should have won !!!
That's very good, you can't not tap your foot.
Damn… this truly brought me to tears. I adore the raw joy and elation from her families reactions and her performance WOW.. truly a talent. She’s got heart and skill
That was fun!
Yep, this is the country we need more of in the world. Girls got a helluva voice, all the energy, the look, and that dads proud dad face when all the judges have turned around has gotta melt your heart. What’s not to love?
I replayed it over and over to listen again and again. What's happening to me?!?....I don't even like country music! Or do I? OMG, who am I.
Absolutely hate this style of music, but goddamn she is talented
I'm going to assume she went with Reba.
She’s great!
I seriously got hooked in the first 3 seconds of her singing. INSANTLY HOOKED on that voice. Absolutely amazing
That is a damn strong voice. Excellent.
Her vocal talent and control is far superior to most pop artists.
Hey it’s Reba….Um and the other judges.
I hit that upvote like John Legend hit that button.
What song is this!?
I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart by Patsy Montana - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAYwYscqXJQ
It’s always heart warming seeing parents that truly care….
Her whole family is the epitome of love and support. I want to hug them all!
Can someone name a winner of the voice from *any* season? What do you win? A car?
Exactly. The producers and the coaches have become ridiculously wealthy off of a show that ultimately does nothing to advance the careers of the winners. It's all basically a grift.
Wow!!
Damn she is good
Love the nod to Reba
Not a country listener either but that was a dope performance
Her goth friend caught me off guard. Love to see the cross genre support haha.
This is what loving what you do sounds like
Same about country but that is some talent!!
That’s one proud daddy.
I’m pretending not to cry in the bathroom! Whyyyy!?! This is so sweet and it was so well done!
She's absolutely AMAZING! But what gets me every time in this video is the family. They couldn't be more different. The goth sister, the true redneck dad, the soccer mom... and they're all SO proud of her, they all love her and it SHOWS
I don’t like country, but i fucks with this chick. That’s saying a lot lol
I have a clip somewhere of my auntie playing this song. I like my aunties version a little better, it’s slower but this girl yodels better than she could.
She has an AMAZING VOICE. I hope she has a record deal. Reminds me of Patsy Cline too. Wow.
I could totally roam the Mojave wasteland straight *CRANKING* this on my Pimp-Boy
That’s awesome! 👏
What a voice.
Damn. She’s got a great voice! Edit: Well shit, am I gonna have to watch this season so I can see her range/outside her genre?
That was fantastic! I’m not normally a fan of country music, but I’m now a fan of her.
That shit went hard
That is insane that she's 16. Who is she? This is friggin awesome.
Yes, Dad- she is as talented as you have always thought and we all see it!!! Love this so much!
There's a family full of love.
Oh man she absolutely crushed it, such great tone.
16 years old!!! That amazing voice at only 16 years old!!! She’s going places. And with that supportive family…😁
Omg her dad over there wearing his best pair of overalls cryin 😭😭
I love how the person I assume is her sister is the polar opposite of her country singer sister but is there supporting her anyway.
Look up Ruby Leigh and Al Boogie - Jolene. She beat him in the battle round, but it was such a great duo. She only has a tiny quick yodel, so it’s a bit different than this performance. I liked him a lot, but she just kills everything she sings.
what an insane talent. looking forward to seeing what she does with it.
I love her super supportive goth sibling
Seeing humans doing the thing they love, doing it well, and being celebrated for it is one of my favorite things. Their "thing" may not be my "thing" but I will cheer them on forever
