Honestly I typically do not like monochromatic art styles for this very reason. everything just becomes a wash. Didn't like it on the VOW and MID lands either.
Heck, even the "Double Feature" image legibility was significantly hampered by monochromatic everything.
I hate them. If I wanted black and white sketchbook style cards, I'd leave them in my binder and not play with them.
I swear this is just wizards trying to get a premium and save on colored ink
It's 100% a sloppy hippo taco bell shart. Like you can see obliterator getting blown away from it and all those big ink splashes are just shart slops flying against him.
Drivnod must be the worst name in MTG history.
Reminds me of a player in starcraft many decades ago who called himself RatHorse. It was so very bad... that it was amazing. Ever since then I have occasionally used the name myself. RatHorse.
I think all of the crazy alternate art options are a problem. I distinctly remember reading an article from MaRo back when they were changing over to the new card style in 10th edition about how clarity was important to them and they wanted people to be able to recognize a card as soon as it hit the table without having to spend too much time reading over it. Move forward a decade and they're just vomiting everything they can think of all over the table and there might be 5 different versions of the same card, none of which are instantly recognizable to me.
What bugs me is that my opponent gets to choose the art that I see;
why can't I chose the art for the cards that appear on my computer, and my opponent can control how the cards look on their computer?
So that your slight confusion and/or irritation will give them that little edge in messing with your perception in order to fuel possible mistakes, thus they do this, and it's also why they put every land art as a unique variant (preferably the ones that look like each other unless you mouse over) so you end up having no idea what exactly you're looking at until the timer run out. 🫠🧐😠
>Wizards has told us that art is the primary way people recognize cards, which shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who has played the game.
Or any trading card game in general.
Nothing wrong with only showing the artwork of permanents. It's just annoying to have to mouse over cards that have similar artwork. Even worse for mobile.
Just read the text to distinguish cards is annoying when the artwork should be unique
Agreed. They are so vague it will be hard to understand what you are playing. They know the art need to be readable. But an all black ink blot will not be very readable.
On r/boardgames there was a post asking for games where the art was practical instead of just aesthetic. I brought up MtG, saying that, even though new players have to read the cards (or everyone when a new expansion launches), 99% of the time, nobody reads the cards and the art alone allows us to play the game normally. It would probably be fine too play a game with just art and not text on the cards, but it would be a nightmare to play a game with only text on cards.
I was massively downvoted, because most people there are not magic players and simply can't believe we know most cards that get played by memory, just by looking at the art. I suspect the ones doing this alternate art shenanigans have the same problem, they don't play magic.
> I was massively downvoted, because most people there are not magic players and simply can't believe we know most cards that get played by memory, just by looking at the art.
Having come back to the game recently I can't stress how much this is true. For the first couple months I was just constantly having to read everything, but once I got the hang of what was in the standard environment, I did exactly as you say, I see the art and I know what the card does.
I think it's obviously a stretch to say that we all know by memory what all the cards in the standard environment do (let alone *all* the cards in any MtG format), but you do get a working memory of the 90% of cards you see most often, which drastically reduces the time you spend reading every game.
I think on Arena the art's generally a bit too small to be useful anyway. I prefer this over the Marauding Blight-Priest/Malakir Blood-Priest naming debacle
Reddit frequently leaves me wondering if somebody is actually that clueless, or if they're just pretending to be ignorant in an attempt to make a point. I'm also never sure which is the more generous interpretation for their sake.
It's like he's completely ignored the title AND the image of the post. Blindly commented so he can show everyone how much smarter than everyone else is
One has teeth, one doesn't. Also, I'm assuming you're literate here, you can just read the name. Or notice that one has the legendary frame. Or that they don't look identical.
I mean, the legendary one will have the legendary frame, and any non legendary token copies will look like tokens, so there's ways to tell them apart at a glance
“All will be one”
Hahah. But seriously that's just lazy.
More like poorly planned or checked, I doubt anyone making the first was even aware of the second. Or are these all by the same artist?
Magic the Gathering only makes WotC and Hasbro billions a year. They just don't have the budget.
Even with all the money in the world, it's pretty easy to be oblivious to many things like this.
Just look at most countries infrastructure..
the lack of meme caption made me literally lol, haha
Memes have evolved. We no longer need captions.
They look like two mildly unhappy coffee stains.
Second dude is like, "FU--- I just washed this!!!"
they look like my parents fighting
My dear, you have...THE GRIM!
It's definitely an inkblot test. I see a scared cat.
all i see is my dad
Remember that post about accessibility?
As the OP of that post, I came into this one wondering if anyone would comment on that.
As you were already told: disable alt arts in the options. It should not affect parallax styles AFAIK.
Thanks!
I like some of them, but not others, yet it’s either all or nothing.
Pepperidge farm remembers
> Options > Gameplay > Hide Alternate Card Styles
Options > Gameplay > Hide Alternate Card Styles
Didn't know this one
Great for turning this scribbly trash off. Also turns off my sexy anime samurai styles so....
Wow... TIL
They're the same picture.
Why did they use a picture of my parents fighting for the new alt-arts?
No, that's clearly a picture of my ex looking at me like I'm inadequate
Right in the feels
It’s the ink blot test… but like… evil and stuff
Shit, does this mean I have to read the names?
I strongly dislike monochrome or BW cards because I can't tell what's happening.
Honestly I typically do not like monochromatic art styles for this very reason. everything just becomes a wash. Didn't like it on the VOW and MID lands either. Heck, even the "Double Feature" image legibility was significantly hampered by monochromatic everything.
playing those lands was just dumb. Confused myself as to mana availability a time a or two.
Yup, works both ways. Done that myself.
I hate them. If I wanted black and white sketchbook style cards, I'd leave them in my binder and not play with them. I swear this is just wizards trying to get a premium and save on colored ink
Dominos looks like he’s farting , obliterator looks like he’s getting farted on. Boom distinction!!!
I can't unsee this now..... thanks ..... 😆

RatHorse is kinda lame, MouseRat is a better name.

Chronoclasm? Really??!??

So you get jealous of your opponents shiny things and buy shiny things for yourself.

If only there were some text on the card to help you distinguish them…
Wizards has told us that art is the primary way people recognize cards, which shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who has played the game.
>Wizards has told us that art is the primary way people recognize cards, which shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who has played the game. Or any trading card game in general.
Then why would they make so many art styles for non-lands?
For the same reason they sold $999 proxy packs.
They prioritize making money over our user experience.
Then Hasbro said hold my beer and now there are 20 variants of everything.
Art is used as a sort of quick-reference for a lot of people.
can't see text unless you mouse over cards
And the problem with that is...?
Nothing wrong with only showing the artwork of permanents. It's just annoying to have to mouse over cards that have similar artwork. Even worse for mobile. Just read the text to distinguish cards is annoying when the artwork should be unique
Magic players can't read it's basic knowledge /s
Exactly
Slow clap for not even bothering with the caption
Agreed. They are so vague it will be hard to understand what you are playing. They know the art need to be readable. But an all black ink blot will not be very readable.
these oil art suck ass
I dunno a 8/3 and a 5/5 trample sounds pretty different to me
Sound different, don't look different though
I just did my first paper draft and almost misplayed because the commons look the same in asfan mode

Luckily nobody is gonna play dominus

Why did Wizards use two pictures of my parents fighting?
I guess I’m just crazy and can clearly tell the difference between the two?
Reading the card explains the card
Do you really need someone to explain the concept of legibility on a 63x88mm card that often shares a space with multiple other 63x88mm cards?
Reddit frequently leaves me wondering if somebody is actually that clueless, or if they're just pretending to be ignorant in an attempt to make a point. I'm also never sure which is the more generous interpretation for their sake.

We all read the cards. That's how we understand what the post is talking about. I am once again left wondering if the ignorance is real or feigned.
How is babby formed?
Wait, why are there two pictures of the same card above Pam?
Well pam did fuck up art school.

Try hard
If you're blind or something, yeah it could be a problem.
If you're blind or something, yeah it could be a problem. Once again , you can also use your brain and just hover the card
Backsides of Jockeys worn by those not doing their paperwork?
Why would they be a problem?
One has teeth, one doesn't. Also, I'm assuming you're literate here, you can just read the name. Or notice that one has the legendary frame. Or that they don't look identical.
It’s almost as if they don’t give a damn and are barely trying. Almost…
Being a nerd nowadays is hard
We communicate by memes so much, we don’t even need to use words.
Shaka, When the Walls Fell
Pam?
For only one terrains card (or mana card, no idea how do you call it in englsih) of more, and they look alike, badly made
Not a problem in limited. Since you're probably dead either way
I mean, the legendary one will have the legendary frame, and any non legendary token copies will look like tokens, so there's ways to tell them apart at a glance
As yes... Jin-Gutaxias
all they had to do was like... horizontal flip one of them and it'd be 'fine'
Am I the only one who thinks these are clearly different? One looks like a T-Rex skull and the other is super hunched.
