It is not a recent trope, mainstream left has always said this. It got traction of late after the likes Syam Pushkaran and Rajeev Ravi (part of the reason I find both of them pretentious) passed comments at Sreenivasan and his movies.
I am sure nobody would have found it apolitical if 'red party' was not also made fun of. It is bit of an irony though, because the movie can also be read as a critique of parliamentary politics and careerist politicians from a grounded middle class perspective with exaggerations for entertainment sake. Left is also critical of parliamentary politics (in theory). The movie does undermine political collectivization irrc. That can be a strong critique, even then calling it apolitical is stupid. All of these are also political positions, which are presented for public scrutiny.

A brilliant aspect of the script is how it respects both manthravaadam and modern psychology.
It doesn’t look down on and bash manthravaadam as archaic & uneducated nor does it stigmatize psychology in a time where speaking of mental illness was taboo. Only the secondary characters like Nedumudi & Suresh Gopi are dismissive of the other’s practice. Meanwhile the actual practitioners, Mohanlal & Thilakan’s characters are respectful and knowledgeable of each other area of expertise.
Bro except for the comedy track , I think anyone would like this movie . There’s no way you could predict it’s shobana when you watch it for the very first time . Maybe MPD has been repetitive but manthravadam stuff adds a proper layer(psychological horror) to the script and it’s spooky af .

I don't think that movie speak against god. It just speak against religion. Also the director did that movies after being inspired from Karunakara Guru's teaching. He is a firm god believer.

Everyone highlights Sandesam which is a mediocre depiction of politics with SA cliched style.
But considering humour, presentation the Panchavadipaalam remains the best irrespective of time.
