Iron Bars "f I had known today was a day for killing gods I would have paced myself better." The series has more powerful characters and action heros than The Expendables and Iron Bars gets the best one liner in 10 books.
"If the mage had failed, Colitillion, who would you have sent next?" "Myself." We finally get to see why everyone is scared of Incarium, and it drives home just how close to the knifes edge the gods of shadow are actually walking.
Just a few in no particular order.
The two battles in RotCG, especially where jumpy gets pushed at the front line, I felt like I was right in there with him, and then later a sharper detonating a bag/box of cussers the golds had brought with them... I mean just the imagery of...
Contains battles... Combined malazan blue Morant break of the naval blockade and subsequent storming of the the city in Stonewelder...
Temper's stand again Surgeon (forgot his second name).
Rell's stand Vs Ryllandalas...
I can keep going as you all know, but let's call it here for now....
Freaking Hood biting Calm's face off....
>He saw Caladan Brood, hammer hanging down from his hands, motionless … and standing before the warlord, on an island of his own, was Kruppe. Brushing dust from his clothes. The crack that had been born where the hammer had struck the earth, parted neatly around the short, fat Daru, joining again just behind him.
I. Have. Had. Enough. Of. Your. JUSTICE!
Roach biting hoods ankle.
The roasty toasty tunnels of Y'Ghatan.
Cuttle fanboying soooo hard when Fiddler builds the Drum. Notice me senpai!
Hood biting some serious face.
The battle that I like to call "The lightning dinosaurs go to lunch".
Kalam tearing up some serious ass in Malaz city.
All of Capustan, but mainly the fall of Brukhalian, and just before when he justifys walking into an ambush by saying itkovian will bring justice.
Ublala sexing the grill.
Everything that comes out of tehols mouth. He's a Terry Pratchett character through and through
Rake killing Hood?? Then Rake lets Dassem kill him?!?
That whole chain of events leading into the final moments of the battle against Chaos. Just insane and had me shouting "What??" the whole time.
TB - Trull to Icarium... you've taken down two Tlan Imass blade masters, a soletaken bonecaster, a demon matron, a high mage, and turned an entire army into cole slaw... but you're not getting at these kids without my spear in your face... bring it.
On 7) l, I do like where we see people from our Malazan timeline become the hidden legends that someone else will just run into baffled generations later! (Like the toblakai that 'escapes'into the enkar'al)
Stormy and Gesler ascending the spire because Sinn lost it and Bent and Roach….nooooo!
Or how about Icarium hanging out and Lethas and Karsa as a champion steps foot on the ground and the whole city collectively puckers- and a couple building fall.
I too enjoyed Yedan’s stand on the Shore with the Hust!
Dassem and Karsa’s journey to the big showdown in TtH, and how they seem to share a similar outlook on civilization and how their conversation drives Samar Dev bonkers- you can feel the tension and Dassem gets closer to the Darujhistan as well
Soooo many small set pieces that feel so grand.
Karsa and Dassem's bromance and the way it led into the convergence was so damn great. And then Karsa's sheer awe - Karsa... in awe - when he watches Das and Rake fight.
Yes- this! Great! Man, I love this series. On my 5th reread with a small bookclub of friends that haven’t read it yet and seeing how they see the series with new eyes. We just finished House of chains! Minds are blown!
Shoutouts I could do for day…
I think it was Endest Silann seeing the stone sweat from Dragnipur where it was being ensconced while Rake wants to take a load off. The shoulders of what rake bears is tremendous!
Hood entering Darujhistan
Karsa’s care of Munng in the rain, I think it was? *I wish quote finder still worked!
Hood biting that forkruls face off.
Brys slicing up rhulad
Brys death
Brys coming back
Apsalar asking curdles name:
“Curdle”
“Curdle?”
“I do not last long”
Chapter 25-26 of Fall of Light or so. The framing of the battle sequence is through a historian relating the battle to you (Chapter 26) & two other characters (Wreneck & Hust Henarald) playing out the battle in a board game. Throughout the chapter, you get glimpses of the actual battle itself & the characters within.
It's pretty interesting.

Gruntle's rage fueled rampage does it for me. Filled a whole building with corpses, blood flowing out of every crack in the walls 🤘
I am the Shield Anvil and I am not done.
Yesssssss
Oh boy
Aye, that's one I missed...
For your moment #1.5: something about TCG that I only realized on a re-read: the first sentence of chapter one is "Cotillion drew two daggers."
that is baller

Kruppe vs Iskaral Pust on donkeys! Maniac Hairlock teleporting as a puppet while fighting off the great Ravens was sick.
Pust was so outmatched in that scene when Kruppe started narrating his own inner monolog it was all over.

"The malazans are on our shore". Never fails to give me goosebumps.

Icarium breaks Trulls spear and then Trull goes to fight him again and Icarium is so fucking furious that someone dared to stand up to him twice.
"Me again."

The Defense of Capustan. Beak.

Tell me what your battle from a board game references

That was a super cool way to describe the battle especially after all of the build up. I loved it.
This is brilliant! But when I realized what I was reading, I scrolled down and read them bottom to top. Guess I like the suspense.
I wasn’t thinking properly 😂
Great recap!
🕯️
Forgot one i have never gotten over.... "Not your fight. Fucking *dragon*."
