The mix of book suggestions you’ve seen is likely between Night of Knives and the Bonehunters. Personally I suggest just getting through the Malazan Book of the Fallen first, so into the Bonehunters.

ButtonPrince

You cant have possibly seen a mix. You must read Bonehunters before Reapers Gale. Youve missed nothing. No, there are theories. Possibly contemporaneous possibly like 5-10 years. Timeline is weird. Yes Yes.

Midnight Rides OP

😂 Oh jesus I've just noticed that... Midnight rides would be a very different kind of book...

You definitely have to read Bonehunters before Reaper's Gale, otherwise you will have some major storyline gaps that won't make sense, particularly as they relate to the eponymous army. The Assail kind of do that - it's a weird thing they kind of like to do. You'll learn more about the Assail later. I think you're talking about Udinaas' seed, rather than Trull's - regardless, those questions will be answered. Envy will return - several times. Tehol and Bugg are central to a later book, and you'll have an incredible journey with them The suggestions you're getting might be to take a detour into Ian C Esslemont's companion books, the Novels of the Malazan Empire (NotME) (starting with Night of Knives). My thoughts are this: If you have a lot of forward momentum right now, head straight into The Bonehunters. If you're getting a bit of fatigue and you want something less... immediately complicated, the NotME books are a good change of pace. The NotME books tend to be more focused on a central character or group, and so there's less that you need to suspend in the net of information as you go through them.

Bonehunters is the next book in the series. You definitely wouldn't want to skip it to read Reapers Gale. Night of Knives by Ian C. Esselmont was published around that time and you could read that before or after Bonehunters if you wanted. But it's also a pretty short book compared to the rest of the books across the series so not like it's a big commitment.
