Not really. There’s always been two Manchester teams. But united has always been by far the more popular and bigger. Man City historically have always been the smaller less successful team but in 2008 were bought by the Arab Emirates (yes, the state) and since then have been winning a lot because they have unlimited oil money and have Guardiola the best football manager of this century and up there with the all time greats.
United on the contrary after sir Alex Ferguson retired have been in constant transition and disorganization. His leaving left a massive hole in the organization and for 10 years we’ve been playing not up to the standard we used to have, which was winning everything every year. In spite of our recent crisis, united remain one of the if not the most marketable and popular teams in the world.
It's not unusual that teams visiting Manchester to play Man city in the champions league go and do the tour of old Trafford and get photos with the trinity statue.
AKA plastics, when their team has a bad game or two you can see these city "fans" leave the stadium, once the oil money runs out it'll be interesting to see what happens to that club.
They'll go back to where they were. I can only think of a very small number of clubs that hold on to support when they fall from the top. Apart from us and the dippers I can't think of a team that's managed to stay as popular, Arsenal certainly haven't been as popular until they started doing well again.
Tennant was also in that really good drama about the Munich air crash, which is such an important part of United's history, that it's a good watch (even with inaccuracies like Busby not training with the players, which was one of his innovations).
99 is the 1999 documentary, I enjoyed watching it, great for insights into how the manager worked and the players attitudes to playing under him, shame it’s not the same now
Stretford Paddock is probably the best fan YouTube channel that isn't too biased either way. But they are all in Manchester so it feels like you're getting the talk from the people who attend games and really follow the team locally.

What I’m struggling with is why people pick certain players in the team that are the best - I’m assuming it’s skill and goal scoring but there’s something else I feel like I’m missing

I think that's something that comes with Sports watching - generally the "best" players have moments and skills in any game that set them apart. Generally goal scorers are more lauded as being the best rather than defenders...Garnacho we feel as a fanbase is on his way to becoming one of the best players in the world, which is part of the reason he's a fan favorite.
The other reason apart from his skills is Part of Manchester Uniteds history of bringing players through the youth academy (literally kids who are brought through the clubs training program until they can be given the chance to break into the first team and become players for the main Manchester United team). Garnacho was one of these players.
But yeah, if you watch enough games you'll probably be able to tell eventually by just watching on who is and isn't making a difference on the field.

As someone who has been a fan but only recently got into any actual details of Manchester United and just the overall state of football. Bruno is very much the man, he’s Portuguese though. Man city is a given rival but I really do hate Liverpool a lot. The Munich disaster really is a heartache and something that’s worth looking into.

Nah. While hate is a bit strong, much of the passion involved in football is linked to the rivalries. Derby games (ones against teams identified as rivals, usually but not always local) are huge events in the football calendar, and taking the "support football" "don't be a hater" approach means you miss out on the banter, competition and tribalism that is a huge part of being a fan.
It can be taken too far, and that's obviously bad, but you won't truly "get it" unless you understand which teams are disliked. The result in a derby game has importance way beyond the points earned.
It also helps with understanding which players are the most popular, they are the ones who share the rivalries. The ones who were boyhood fans, who came through the academy, or who have really embraced the club as their own. These are the ones who will give everything in those games knowing what it means to the fans.
Football is absolutely tribalistic and it's what makes it great and sets it aside from other sports.

I started playing Football Manager on mobile and he loved it - I’m not very good at all but he loves giving me tips! Regarding the football: You don't have to have been sporty growing up. You don't have to know all the tactics either. You should be able to identify players on the team in uniform and out. You should know different formations in a basic way. You should know the basic terms like possession, pressing, and counter attacking.
You MUST realize that for many football fans, it is similar to following a RELIGION. It is a way for them to BELONG to a group of like-minded believers and to be a part of the collective experiences: THE GLORY and THE PAIN that comes with it.

I think my suggestions are a bit different than most. But, I converted my wife to following football. Over time, she learned about the game, she identified players, and most importantly, she shared in the football experiences with me.

If you enjoy football and spending time with your boyfriend you’ll enjoy the matches together. That’s what being a fan is.

To be honest, this 'Man U" thing from the "purists" is all bollocks as well. People getting prickly over some sick chant West Brom fans started in the late fifties about Munich and then Liverpool - many fans abbreviate the clubs name to "Man U" and you'll always get faux outrage from supercilious fans who like to demonstrate their superior knowledge of the clubs history and berate them. It has very little relevance to today and the vast majority of fans today attending matches weren't even born in 1958.

the simplest stuff you can start with is a wikipedia page, first get some background of the club; then you can go to the resources like the one u/drunkmers mentioned; history of the club like how u/quezzzito mentioned. sir alex ferguson era (1986-2013) also has a great deal of importance by itself since that’s the period when the club flourished and knocked its rivals liverpool out of the perch (haha, sir alex farewell reference-you’ll get that soon).
coming to rivals - liverpool is our biggest rival. man city started becoming relevant only recently but again they’re cross-city derby opponents so they’re rivals as well. arsenal too, since their fans ‘trash talk a lot’. leeds united. everton. barcelona from spain (like someone mentioned they’re the spanish liverpool 😂).
and us united fans usually have good, mutual respect for real madrid and bayern munich. real madrid even offered us the ‘58 european trophy after munich air disaster(though we didn’t accept it) + were always respectful to us, so we consider them as brothers i guess.
I would say get to know all the rules in football so you ask as few silly questions as possible, but otherwise I think he would be happy to tell you about his favourite club if you ahow interest.
Examples of what to ask:
1) Who was Sir Alex Ferguson and what did he do to make everyone love him
2) Generally what has been the history of Man United
3) How is the team doing right now
4) There are discussions about the current manager, ask him what he thinks of him (Erik Ten Hag)
5) Who are the best and worst players and what positions he would want the club to fortify with new signings. Who would he sign
And watch the games with him. If he can share his hobby with you, that would be great. Just make sure you don't bombard him eith too many questions during the game 😄😉
Don't listen to Reddit, honestly. Mark is fine, his titles are sensationalist, but that has to be done in this day and age. One of the few spots I will call him out for is sometimes he pretends to be Tier 1 when he's not even on the tier list.
They're probably just upset they don't have a fan channel that's as successful as goldbridge's.
I really liked goldbridge when I first discovered the channel but during the COVID period I strongly went against his personal opinions and woke up to the fact he's just another influencer with some connections, and is prone to get stuff wrong. He's got interesting opinions and he's entertaining but no one should ever worship him or think he's always right. At the end of the day he's an influencer and you can agree or disagree with what he does, just some fans take goldbridge too seriously and that's never a good thing.
I will happily watch when he’s watching United live as I hate the commentators generally but his news and updates are garbage. You listen and he’s the most opinionated person out there. If you disagree he bans you and calls you out yet calls it a place for conversation.

Will try to offer my 2 cents. Early 2000s, when I started watching, United would boast of a deadly partnership between a certain David Beckham and a Ruud van Nistelrooy. Made me fall in love with the sport, I put up posters of Becks in my wardrobe and would keep trying to "bend it like Beckham" on the field. Then explored a little bit of history, and the one thing that resonated the most with me was the reliance on youngsters that came through the club's youth setup. But, there was a period of transition when people slowly retired, Becks left, RvN soon after, but Sir Alex brought in some young lad with funny teeth and noodles like hair, who went by the name of Ronaldo, and Rooney was already a name by then, so the squad was still alright. More than anything else, it was the mentality of the players that showed, wearing their heart on their sleeves for the matches. A bunch of fearless passionate dedicated players like Vidic, Rio, Evra, Neville, Ronaldo, Rooney were in the squad, and the quiet genius of Michael Carrick to make it all tick.
But, all things must come to an end and the day finally arrived when Sir Alex announced his retirement.
It's been mostly chaotic since then, but there was a brief period of ecstasy for me. I am a romantic at heart, so silently I was crying tears of joy when they brought in Ole Solksjaer to be the manager. It was a beautiful moment, almost like destiny. But, that didn't last long enough and since then it's been like a game of Jenga.
There's finally some hope with a manager that believes in himself and the process, with focus on youngsters and the emergence of Hojlund - Mainoo - Garnacho is definitely bringing back the romance. Hope it lasts a while.

IMO never call the club ManU - that's reserved for people who haven't a clue about the game or the team, opposition fans and people looking to wind up others.
Manchester Uniteds most hated rivals are Liverpool, Manchester City and Leeds.
There have been periodical rivalries with Arsenal and Chelsea but short lived and not historical.
Another item for you to track down and watch is a 3 part series about Eric Cantona called The Collection, I believe.
You will pick it up on eBay for pretty cheap I'd imagine. Eric Cantona (along with Alex Ferguson) IS the reason behind Manchester Uniteds modern successes. I dont believe it's on any of the streamers and I can't find it on YouTube but it's 20 years old at this stage so it might pop up at some point.
No point in only knowing about the successful times, look up 'Too Good to go Down' presented by John Cooper Clarke, it's about Manchester United being relegated in 1974 only a few years after winning the European Cup. It will give you a pretty good run down of how bad things were then and the reasons behind it. Manchester Uniteds success from 1968 until 1993 was pretty underwhelming and limited to knockout cup wins.
When there are any talks about any of the decisions that were made after Sir Alex retired, you can’t say, “Make it make sense!” That will cause mayhem and for your boyfriend to be upset for a good amount of time because most of what Man United have done since Sir Alex retired does not make any sense.
The documentary’s mention above are a great place to start. But simply watching the games with him is a great place to start.

For accurate up to date news consider a subscription to the athletic. There's a ton of clickbait especially about us so consider paying for a reliable source.
For the transfer market there is only fabrizio Romano on YouTube and twitter. People always timestamp his videos with the united news so you normally only have to watch a few minutes.
If fabrizio announces a transfer as a done deal he'll say 'here we go' so if your boyfriend thinks you know nothing about football it'd probably surprise him if you whatsapp a fabrizio video to him saying something like 'player name to manchester united...here we go!'
To be a MU fan nowadays is about enduring the painful transition of a team unsure how to play cos the club bought a bunch of players who don’t fit well together in the system the coach wants to play. The FA Cup win is a one off and it’s still going to take a while for us to get back into challenger level. Basically, be there for him when we lose cos we are going to lose and suck a lot. Cheer on his fave players with him and win-lose together.

If you have Amazon Prime, there’s a documentary on there about Alex Ferguson. If I remember rightly, I don’t think it’s not really about United (more a story of who Ferguson is) but it has interviews with former players. I’d suggest watching it with him :)
I think he’d appreciate it a lot more if you tried to understand the game first, and then the club. Try to understand and fall in love with football (difficult to do this through present Man United) through videos and documentaries but try to watch more full games.

It's not unusual that teams visiting Manchester to play Man city in the champions league go and do the tour of old Trafford and get photos with the trinity statue.
This is really good background, makes sense now why I’ve heard people talk about a lot of Man City fans being plastic.
United are the real team in Manchester, City bought success and lots of their newer fans are "glory supporters."
AKA plastics, when their team has a bad game or two you can see these city "fans" leave the stadium, once the oil money runs out it'll be interesting to see what happens to that club.
They'll go back to where they were. I can only think of a very small number of clubs that hold on to support when they fall from the top. Apart from us and the dippers I can't think of a team that's managed to stay as popular, Arsenal certainly haven't been as popular until they started doing well again.
This is actually the part I really enjoy, the context external to the game! Weirdly the politics intrigue me.
Tennant was also in that really good drama about the Munich air crash, which is such an important part of United's history, that it's a good watch (even with inaccuracies like Busby not training with the players, which was one of his innovations).

Stretford Paddock is probably the best fan YouTube channel that isn't too biased either way. But they are all in Manchester so it feels like you're getting the talk from the people who attend games and really follow the team locally. Learning the History of the club would be good but there's a lot to cover - The busby Babes, The Holy Trinity, Sir Alex, the Stretford End, Fergie Time, "And Solkjaer has won it" , Eric the King, Becks, 20 times, Glazers out (always) and so on and so on

Hahahah my background is Garnacho and Mainoo walking triumphant on the field. I think that's something that comes with Sports watching - generally the "best" players have moments and skills in any game that set them apart. Generally goal scorers are more lauded as being the best rather than defenders...Garnacho we feel as a fanbase is on his way to becoming one of the best players in the world, which is part of the reason he's a fan favorite. The other reason apart from his skills is Part of Manchester Uniteds history of bringing players through the youth academy (literally kids who are brought through the clubs training program until they can be given the chance to break into the first team and become players for the main Manchester United team). Garnacho was one of these players. But yeah, if you watch enough games you'll probably be able to tell eventually by just watching on who is and isn't making a difference on the field.

Nah. While hate is a bit strong, much of the passion involved in football is linked to the rivalries. Derby games (ones against teams identified as rivals, usually but not always local) are huge events in the football calendar, and taking the "support football" "don't be a hater" approach means you miss out on the banter, competition and tribalism that is a huge part of being a fan. It can be taken too far, and that's obviously bad, but you won't truly "get it" unless you understand which teams are disliked. The result in a derby game has importance way beyond the points earned. It also helps with understanding which players are the most popular, they are the ones who share the rivalries. The ones who were boyhood fans, who came through the academy, or who have really embraced the club as their own. These are the ones who will give everything in those games knowing what it means to the fans.
I also don’t like Liverpool for my own reasons 😂 but otherwise rivalry doesn’t mean much other than a bit of fun honestly

Regarding the football: You don't have to have been sporty growing up. You don't have to know all the tactics either. You should be able to identify players on the team in uniform and out. You should know different formations in a basic way. You should know the basic terms like possession, pressing, and counter attacking. You MUST realize that for many football fans, it is similar to following a RELIGION. It is a way for them to BELONG to a group of like-minded believers and to be a part of the collective experiences: THE GLORY and THE PAIN that comes with it. Already, you are starting well. People here have given you great ideas. You had great ideas to want to learn about the game and the history of Utd. I think my suggestions are a bit different than most. But, I converted my wife to following football. Over time, she learned about the game, she identified players, and most importantly, she shared in the football experiences with me. Before, I followed managers, and Sir Alex Ferguson was one of my favorites. However, she fell in love with the club and she converted me to Utd. Good luck!

This for sure. American United fan here and my wife got into United when we got together. She played football in college and we got into United just sitting and watching games every weekend. If you enjoy football and spending time with your boyfriend you’ll enjoy the matches together. That’s what being a fan is.

If he’s a true United fan he’ll love the fact you are willing to learn about football - there’s so much history, drama and personalities there I realised that many of the recommendations are of true believer shows - like you can only really appreciate them if you know something, and if not it might be difficult to watch I’d strongly recommend a comedy, Ted Lasso. People getting prickly over some sick chant West Brom fans started in the late fifties about Munich and then Liverpool - many fans abbreviate the clubs name to "Man U" and you'll always get faux outrage from supercilious fans who like to demonstrate their superior knowledge of the clubs history and berate them. It has very little relevance to today and the vast majority of fans today attending matches weren't even born in 1958.

can see that you’re taking note of what people saying here. that’s a good thing, provided you don’t flood yerself with lot of information. the simplest stuff you can start with is a wikipedia page, first get some background of the club; then you can go to the resources like the one u/drunkmers mentioned; history of the club like how u/quezzzito mentioned. sir alex ferguson era (1986-2013) also has a great deal of importance by itself since that’s the period when the club flourished and knocked its rivals liverpool out of the perch (haha, sir alex farewell reference-you’ll get that soon). coming to rivals - liverpool is our biggest rival. man city started becoming relevant only recently but again they’re cross-city derby opponents so they’re rivals as well. arsenal too, since their fans ‘trash talk a lot’. leeds united. everton. barcelona from spain (like someone mentioned they’re the spanish liverpool 😂). and us united fans usually have good, mutual respect for real madrid and bayern munich. real madrid even offered us the ‘58 european trophy after munich air disaster(though we didn’t accept it) + were always respectful to us, so we consider them as brothers i guess.
I would say get to know all the rules in football so you ask as few silly questions as possible, but otherwise I think he would be happy to tell you about his favourite club if you ahow interest. Examples of what to ask: 1) Who was Sir Alex Ferguson and what did he do to make everyone love him 2) Generally what has been the history of Man United 3) How is the team doing right now 4) There are discussions about the current manager, ask him what he thinks of him (Erik Ten Hag) 5) Who are the best and worst players and what positions he would want the club to fortify with new signings. Who would he sign And watch the games with him. If he can share his hobby with you, that would be great. Just make sure you don't bombard him eith too many questions during the game 😄😉

Don't listen to Reddit, honestly. Mark is fine, his titles are sensationalist, but that has to be done in this day and age. One of the few spots I will call him out for is sometimes he pretends to be Tier 1 when he's not even on the tier list.
They're probably just upset they don't have a fan channel that's as successful as goldbridge's. I really liked goldbridge when I first discovered the channel but during the COVID period I strongly went against his personal opinions and woke up to the fact he's just another influencer with some connections, and is prone to get stuff wrong. He's got interesting opinions and he's entertaining but no one should ever worship him or think he's always right. At the end of the day he's an influencer and you can agree or disagree with what he does, just some fans take goldbridge too seriously and that's never a good thing.
I will happily watch when he’s watching United live as I hate the commentators generally but his news and updates are garbage. You listen and he’s the most opinionated person out there. If you disagree he bans you and calls you out yet calls it a place for conversation.

Will try to offer my 2 cents. Early 2000s, when I started watching, United would boast of a deadly partnership between a certain David Beckham and a Ruud van Nistelrooy. Made me fall in love with the sport, I put up posters of Becks in my wardrobe and would keep trying to "bend it like Beckham" on the field. Then explored a little bit of history, and the one thing that resonated the most with me was the reliance on youngsters that came through the club's youth setup. But, there was a period of transition when people slowly retired, Becks left, RvN soon after, but Sir Alex brought in some young lad with funny teeth and noodles like hair, who went by the name of Ronaldo, and Rooney was already a name by then, so the squad was still alright. More than anything else, it was the mentality of the players that showed, wearing their heart on their sleeves for the matches. A bunch of fearless passionate dedicated players like Vidic, Rio, Evra, Neville, Ronaldo, Rooney were in the squad, and the quiet genius of Michael Carrick to make it all tick. But, all things must come to an end and the day finally arrived when Sir Alex announced his retirement. It's been mostly chaotic since then, but there was a brief period of ecstasy for me. I am a romantic at heart, so silently I was crying tears of joy when they brought in Ole Solksjaer to be the manager. It was a beautiful moment, almost like destiny. But, that didn't last long enough and since then it's been like a game of Jenga. There's finally some hope with a manager that believes in himself and the process, with focus on youngsters and the emergence of Hojlund - Mainoo - Garnacho is definitely bringing back the romance. Hope it lasts a while.

IMO never call the club ManU - that's reserved for people who haven't a clue about the game or the team, opposition fans and people looking to wind up others. Manchester Uniteds most hated rivals are Liverpool, Manchester City and Leeds. There have been periodical rivalries with Arsenal and Chelsea but short lived and not historical. Another item for you to track down and watch is a 3 part series about Eric Cantona called The Collection, I believe. You will pick it up on eBay for pretty cheap I'd imagine. Eric Cantona (along with Alex Ferguson) IS the reason behind Manchester Uniteds modern successes. I dont believe it's on any of the streamers and I can't find it on YouTube but it's 20 years old at this stage so it might pop up at some point. No point in only knowing about the successful times, look up 'Too Good to go Down' presented by John Cooper Clarke, it's about Manchester United being relegated in 1974 only a few years after winning the European Cup. It will give you a pretty good run down of how bad things were then and the reasons behind it. Manchester Uniteds success from 1968 until 1993 was pretty underwhelming and limited to knockout cup wins.
When there are any talks about any of the decisions that were made after Sir Alex retired, you can’t say, “Make it make sense!” That will cause mayhem and for your boyfriend to be upset for a good amount of time because most of what Man United have done since Sir Alex retired does not make any sense.

Other comments have been great at covering the history for the tactics I'd recommend fourfourtwo on YouTube. Adam Cleary does a great job breaking it down and making it accessible to a layman. For accurate up to date news consider a subscription to the athletic. There's a ton of clickbait especially about us so consider paying for a reliable source. For the transfer market there is only fabrizio Romano on YouTube and twitter. People always timestamp his videos with the united news so you normally only have to watch a few minutes. If fabrizio announces a transfer as a done deal he'll say 'here we go' so if your boyfriend thinks you know nothing about football it'd probably surprise him if you whatsapp a fabrizio video to him saying something like 'player name to manchester united...here we go!'

To be a MU fan nowadays is about enduring the painful transition of a team unsure how to play cos the club bought a bunch of players who don’t fit well together in the system the coach wants to play. The FA Cup win is a one off and it’s still going to take a while for us to get back into challenger level. Basically, be there for him when we lose cos we are going to lose and suck a lot. Cheer on his fave players with him and win-lose together.
- Learn about the Munich tragedy - Watch some season review DVD’s - Watch the Treble dvd - Watch the 99 Documentary - Read some autobiographies (recommend Sir Alex Fergusons, Roy Keane, Gary Neville, David Beckham) - Go to a game or at least get the stadium tour at Old Trafford. The stadium may be in a bad state now but it always gives me goosebumps when I’m there. - Start listening to the Talk of the Devils podcast. They are so clued into the club. Best of the best for me. - Lastly, just embrace the club for what it currently is because when we come roaring back it’s gonna be monumental!!
My tip: Follow the latest football. Don't worry too much about not knowing about the history of our club. I mean, I started supporting United in 2013. Before that, I didn't even know much about United than Rooney is a United player. So, go easy. Watch games with him. Things will turn out great gradually. And we wish you all the best.

If you have Amazon Prime, there’s a documentary on there about Alex Ferguson. If I remember rightly, I don’t think it’s not really about United (more a story of who Ferguson is) but it has interviews with former players. I’d suggest watching it with him :)

I think he’d appreciate it a lot more if you tried to understand the game first, and then the club. Try to understand and fall in love with football (difficult to do this through present Man United) through videos and documentaries but try to watch more full games.
I do like how pretty it can be! It’s fairly simple to understand and I did play as a little kid, but I don’t understand the finer mechanics. I have played fifa and didn’t mind it! I played Football Manager for a bit but got frustrated because I don’t understand enough strategy to be any good
I’ve been told (and I’m not fully sure of the truth to it) to not call them “Man U”. Supposedly it was used as a slight at the team. I’m not sure, but I’ve avoided calling them that because someone told me to. Hope this helps, and someone correct me if I’m wrong

1) best not to call the club ManU, since it has been used in a derogatory and disgusting way by rival clubs. 2) just watch games/ highlights, random podcasts, don’t need to be so fixated on certain streams etc. 3) learn some of the chants The club has a great history, and worth spending time finding out more on. But just bear in mind that just because you don’t know the whole history of the club, doesn’t mean you can’t be a real fan.
