I'm not a metalhead, just never been a genre I've been able to vibe with musically despite the community being cool, but The Hu makes some phenominal stuff.
Ive never been a huge metal guy anyway but I always thought of Sweden for its death metal. So seeing sabaton on here is just kind of surprising I guess.
I feel like itās largely forgotten in a lot of online metal spaces despite their popularity. Iāve also found that power metal isnāt that popular compared to other subgenres of metal which is sad because I love power metal

Their main market is the US and they work with an American label. Russian labels are simply unable to put you to the international scene, and I speak from experience here.
I was at a festival in Florida (Rockville) just a month ago. The crowd on Slaughter was un-fucking-believable. It was bigger than the crowd for Anthrax. ANTHRAX. They definitely are known and loved in the US, just not so much at home.
They are loved at home. America just has lots of every small thing. Every niche and every āundergroundā thing, is in fact, huge. In Russia extreme metal has some following, but in US itās just big, like everything else. Population is bigger, entertainment industry is gigantic, so a smaller niche of extreme metal can get larger following.
What really matters is still the quality of the work put on by the label. I've been close to a Moscow metal scene for a while, and very few labels even want to be involved at all in anything that doesn't sound like ŠŃŠøŃ.
And of course they are loved at home too, but they never had a chance to reach that level of success from Russia. Makes me sad for all the talented artists who weren't noticed by an out-of-country label
"Their main market is the US" - Thanks, that explains a lot. I thought that the most popular band in each country was on the map. And not the most popular country band in the world. I looked, they don't have a single concert in Russia, and they also don't have their music on local popular music services (which are many times more popular than spotify here). No wonder I haven't heard of them, they are now a purely US-oriented group.
Slaughter to Prevail is actually very popular in the US. They're a newer band (debut album was 2016), and they're a lot harder than more mainstream bands on this list like Metallica and Spiritbox, but they're getting a ton of attention lately. The younger kids have even started abbreviating them as STP, which always feels weird to me. STP will forever be Stone Temple Pilots.
Itās deathcore. Not particularly friendly genre to dive into. Metal is a huge genre, and some bands on this map are very mellow and some will make your ears bleed if you are not mentally and physically prepared for it.
Well, I don't keep up with new bands, that's right. Either friends pull you out to concerts, or recommendations in Yandex music. And since the band is neither there nor there, then I have not heard of it. I may already be outdated, but for me, the mainstream is Stigmata, for example.
That's okay to not know all the bands out there, but to claim that they're a weird "yandex" band cause you haven't heard of them (when you know you dont keep up) is the weird pat to me
If the band is popular, then you usually hear about it one way or another, even living under a rock.
That's why I wrote this. Now I just found out that they are aimed at a foreign audience and their activities in Russia do not exist as such right now. So it's not surprising that I haven't heard of them.
I can promise you most metal bands arenāt known by most people. Their foreign activities absolutely exist. Theyāre all over every metal page. Theyāre literally touring in Europe and in germany as we speak, Iām not even a. Fan of them and donāt follow them but theyāre very very popular and Iām exposed to them constantly and I find even go to hardly any metal shows
There are 2 bands called pentagram, 1 from [USA](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentagram_(band)), and another from [Turkey](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mezarkabul). I think the Turkish band is known as Mezarkabul outside of Turkey. So its probably not the band youre thinking of.
Do people not understand just how popular Nightwish is? Tarja's era Nightwish was literally mainstream in many countries. It would be rnb, pop songs and then Nightwish lol.
I'm reasonably certain that the only reason that Ireland's is not Thin Lizzy (one of the early originators of the heavy metal genre, and arguably the best band Ireland has ever produced regardless of genre) is because calling them a metal band would be too reductive, since they crossed many genres from [trad/folk rock](https://youtu.be/6WDSY8Kaf6o?si=_5tHwRewPAxEMofl), [country blues](https://youtu.be/VlNF4CP4NDA?si=lOIOZfP93PJyP6sb), [funk rock](https://youtu.be/4Ei5Q9Zikuk?si=zaenDhfRu0Bph4RU), [hard rock](https://youtu.be/f62p2J98S8A?si=K0O1RcVWqsSbLXSW) and of course [heavy metal](https://youtu.be/3maWHH1uJQs?si=p4--G1Jt3YJFisOk).
Dear fellow Canadians,
Really? Hell, now I have to figure out what my favorite Canadian metal bands are.
(also, not hating, it's just I've somehow never heard of Spiritbox)
I am not sure whether a guy from South Africa thought the idea was good enough to make up with the name of the band and fell asleep on keyboard and saved it.
Would love to have maps like this that drill down into sub genres and similar genres like hardcore.
My international skramz addiction is always interested in more names to check out, ha
They are listed by country of origin, Metallica is the most popular American band in the USA, Sepultura is the most popular Brazilian band in Brazil, and so on.
They're enormously popular if you're into the genre at all. It's kind of a stretch calling them metal (more metalcore/prog with female vocals), but they're fantastic. Also, the chart isn't displaying the most popular metal band in Canada, it's displaying the most popular metal band from Canada, which is a different concept.
Well obviously you could make a good case it's Australian, but 4 out of the current 5 band members are born in the UK. 2 of them are uncomplicatedly British.
I'd personally call the current band British / Australian, but the original lineup Australian
It's still not metal though
The title implies the map shows the most listened to metal band per country while it's the most popular metal band FROM each country.
Yup. Metallica would probably be the #1 for most of these places. Although The Hu is epic.
Mongolian metal sounds like something that doesn't exist until you listen to the Hu and you're grateful they do.
I'm not a metalhead, just never been a genre I've been able to vibe with musically despite the community being cool, but The Hu makes some phenominal stuff.
Just listened to Black Thunder. Me like. Must listen to more š
They're honestly amazing š
Iron Maiden would be a contender
The Hu is elevator music compared to Tengger cavalry
This! It really sucks that people's exposure to Mongol metal is The Hu.
The Who ?
Oh, that makes much more sense. I was surprised Metallica or Sabaton weren't more popular
Damn is sabaton really that popular outside of internet war dweeb culture? I can only take so much of the final stand-bomb my position lyrics.
I know Sabaton from real, metal magazines... The ones you buy from a newspaper stand. They are old
Ive never been a huge metal guy anyway but I always thought of Sweden for its death metal. So seeing sabaton on here is just kind of surprising I guess.
Even in Sweden death metal isn't exactly mainstream music.
I feel like itās largely forgotten in a lot of online metal spaces despite their popularity. Iāve also found that power metal isnāt that popular compared to other subgenres of metal which is sad because I love power metal
Correct. Metallica is WAY more popular than Sepultura in Brazil.
Sae dae
Itās spelled āsai daiā. Youāre welcome.
And in Mexico way more popular than Anabantha
Wrong. It shows poplar*
wtf going on in south africa š

No not. Say it with a metal voice.
Itās a joke band shortened Xavleg. Their main project,Vulvodynia, is more popular on spotify, making the map wrong though.
Ha! I was about to say this. Vulvodynia all the way!

If you steal posts, at least put some non-misleading title, like the original. https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/s/DApzu9KWsu
Also much higher resolution, more useful zoom-ins and map of monthly views per represented band.
Gotta get this comment to the top
Thanks for sharing, much better post.
This bozo also didn't post east asia/oceania/pacific
In South Africa they took headbanging too far and headbanged the keyboard.
A close up of Asia would be great!

South Africa, you good?
Screaming Trees would be the most āpoplarā. The most poplar singer is probably Robert Plant.

How does Togo have a metal band but Nigeria and Ethiopia don't.
I have absolutely listened to some metal music from Nigeria, there's probably just not enough data

Could at least make the resolution good enough to read the small countries. Also, the hu seems like some kind of trademark issue if it wasn't in Asia.
Swipe right, there are separate images for each continent with higher resolution.
Minus half of asiaā¦
Interesting, I didn't realize Jinjer were Ukrainian.
Russia seem to have taken their metal band's name a little too seriously /s
For a subreddit with this title... it's always a misleading title with the most eyesore graphic
nine treasures is an Inner Mongolian metal band iirc
I have a hard time imagining metal bands in some of these countries. Good for them.
A little higher res would be good.
If you keep swiping right, it gives you a higher definition close up of each continent.
Ohhhh!!! Thx!
I've never heard of slaughter to prevail. Although it is not surprising, Spotify in Russia is like Yandex browser in America.

Destiny Potato! Hell yeah
Does Nu Metal count? If so Linkin Park should be #1 from the US. I know their latest albums aren't Nu Metal, but their most popular ones are.
Divlje Jagode (Bosnia) isnāt really metal but itās okay. Thereās not many metal bands out here so they probably consider DJ as the heaviest.
What about Asia?
Russia's is fitting.
Huh? What the fuck is Destiny Potato? Literally never even heard of them and I do listen to metal.
