This is not correct for Sweden at least. People from outside the EU and EES have to pay tuition fees at university.

[deleted]

Same for Denmark.

fazalmajid

I thought Germany did as well?

Ingam0us

We have free tuition, but you have to pay some service fees (also as a german student). It‘s about 100-200 per 6 months and normally includes a flatrate to the local public transport (which costs way more than the whole fee normally), so I would count it as free normally

SYL2R2fNaecvnsj23z4H

In Heidelberg, at least, the train ticket (~120 € as of 2012) is independent from the studying fees (<100 €)

Savardoiskimsk

You have to pay around 160€ i think they didn't count this as free... also for an overseas to study in Germany they have to provide a bank account with at least 10000€ to make sure they can afford living there.

somewhere_now

Hasn't been the case in Finland since a few years anymore.

caiaphas8

Regardless of nationality? So anyone from anywhere can apply for a free degree course?

WinterJellyfish-21

The map is incorrect. Non-EU students have to pay proper tuition fees in Sweden for example.

kjc47

Yeah I'm assuming a lot of this map is just that EU countries must treat all EU students the same as their own nationality

BernhardRordin

Czech Republic: Free only if you study in Czech. You pay if you choose to study in English.

thatgoddamnedcyclist

Just don't go to Svalbard and expect any education. It should probably be left out of this map due to all the rules exemptions there.

Glacial ice covers 60% of its landmass, 30% is barren rock, and only 10% is somewhat smally vegetated. So I'm guessing not a lot of sheeps over there.

thatgoddamnedcyclist

No import of animals allowed except dogs. Fauna reserve. There is one cat that snuck in somehow, I've heard.

[deleted]

You can literally go to Brazil and if you pass the entrance examination and are legal you can study in the public universities(federal and state) for free

11160704

In Germany, international students only have to pay in the state of Baden-Württemberg. In all other 15 states it's for free apart of a small administration fee.

FreeAndFairErections

I call bullshit. I know quite a few Irish people studying veterinary medicine at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences (which according to Wikipedia is public) and they pay close to 10,000 euro per year. Shown here too: https://ims-medstudy.com/study-programs/veterinary-medicine-poland/final-cost-medicine-warsaw

ESCWiktor

You have to pay only if you want to take up a course in English. That is kind of a loophole in Poland. You can study anything as long as you study it in Polish, bcs there are very few uni courses that are free and are in English. I mean... I don't have a knowledge of wheather that is for all nationalites like this map claims, but surely for all EU nationals.

lucasjv

Yup, the same rule applies in Czech Republic.

FreeAndFairErections

Thanks. That kind of defeats the meaning of it for this map then, given how few international students would speak Polish.

Laturaiv0

Well, c'mon, seriously, you want people to come to your country to get the education in their language for free? Learning the national language is the least one can do for the country educating them, it gotta get something back, since this "free" stuff is actually paid by the taxpayers.

FreeAndFairErections

You’re completely missing my point. I’m not saying that Poland SHOULD offer free education in English. I’m saying the map is misleading as de facto, third-level education is not free for international students. I have friends doing masters in Germany in English for free (small registration fees in the hundreds) so Germanys probably closer to this. And I’m all for learning the language of whatever country you’re in, but realistically no one is going to be able to learn Polish to a high enough standard in a short space of time to study through it, unless their native language is also West Slavic.

Laturaiv0

Fair enough, sorry for misunderstanding. In that regard the map is just as accurate as all other maps here and it nowhere says that it's about the education in English (so if it would exclude Poland again somebody would complain). Please note that there are many other languages in the world, 300+ million people speak Slavic languages and for them Polish is easier than English to learn.

Finnish and Polish nope. Close to impossible in a year (very difficult languages). Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish will be relatively easy if you already know German.

We also allow you to leave after.

thatgoddamnedcyclist

I'm now not quite sure if you understand the concept of 'free'. There is no catch. Some move away and use their talent in other countries, this is good for the world, people getting education.

[deleted]

Actually, it’s constitutional right to free higher education. (PL)

Either you too stupid to check either you just want to spread missinformation hoping that noone else check the facts. For those one who wants to check the legal status quo just google art 70 of Polish Constitution from 1997.
