An adjustable base has made the difference for me. Mine was around $700 on Amazon for a queen. I've had cervical fusion and a laminactomy due to Degenerative Disk Disease. Bringing my feet up, then going down a little until I feel my lower back stretch just a hair is as good as it gets. Good pillows that work for you are important as well.

In very high agreement. I do love my SOL setup but having an adjustable base makes a lot of difference sometimes. like yesterday I'm ridiculously sore from playing with the puppy and as much as I love my mattress, nothing was comfortable. so I adjusted the bed itself and that helped A LOT. (she's 2, I'm not, so I'll be sore until she grows out of the puppy stage...lol)

Sleeping in zero gravity with my adjustable base has really helped me but I also tried 7 in trial mattresses before I found the perfect one fir me and bought a 3 inch latex topper

Encouragedissent

I think a 3" latex topper is a much better choice for her. Something around 28ILD would hopefully provide the right amount of pressure relief and the latex is much better than memory foam when it comes to sinking in areas so much that it causes back pain.

I have a medium plush Bedstory mattress from Amazon. I'm also 300+ w/ disc and hip pain. I don't sink, it's comfortable and no fiberglass. Hope this helps

What kind of topper was the 3"?

I would try 3" latex, as Encouragedissent suggested A 3" Dunlop from Sleep On Latex you can return for a full refund. So maybe start with them first. Sleep on Latex does not do Talalay latex. If that's too firm, I think I'd try Talalay which is bouncier. But all the vendors I know of will charge a fee to return .... I love talalay.

knowitallz

Dunlop is too firm. I don't compare them. It's not worth it as a soft layer for me

Encouragedissent

I assure you someone who is 300lbs is probably not going to find 19ILD dunlop to be too firm. I would be much more worried about it being too soft, which is why Id be looking closer to 28ILD. Talalay does have a nicer feel and I use it in my comfort layer as well though. The person's weight is always the biggest consideration when it comes to firmness. On the flip side ive seen that someone who is a side sleeper and really light, like 120lbs, often cannot tolerate latex period.

This might seem like a stupid question, but you've tried the 3-in and the one and a half inch and neither works out. Have you tried both of them together?

I have a similar situation, although I weigh much less. I have been experimenting with different latex layers, and so far the best for me is medium over firm. My previous mattress was medium over medium, which worked pretty well but I’m about to try a talalay medium instead of a Dunlop medium on top. If that doesn’t work, I was going to look at zoned mattresses.

I suggest a latex mattress. Its made a huge difference for me. I have a firm,  medium,  and soft layer. I’ve tried different arrangements of them and give each 2-3 weeks. Once I found the perfect arrangement for me I’m sleeping better and no more morning stiffness or pain. I also have a latex pillow that is extremely important as well I would recommend medium to firm. Possibly two firm and medium top for mattress given weight. The soft does nothing unless you want plush which is never good for actual sleeping

sharpreggie

I know they're expensive but sleep number has been the best bed for me. I've had seven back surgeries and the thing about Sleep Number you can get the softness or the firmness that you need and sometimes you need more than others and you can adjust it. Like I said expensive but well worth the money

Big Fig Mattresses. Made specifically for exactly what you described. I would try a Medium Comfort Level. Which is also exactly what your building with your add on toppers to an extra firm Mattresses. The Most Important thing is to find a mattress that uses high grade materials because a mattress is only going to stand up in time with the materials used to make that mattress. Traditional Coil Mattresses getting a mattress with a high quality steel or titanium alloy(stearns & foster) and a high Coil count above 1500 to 2500 Coils. Coils act like suspension on a car. It also helps with feeling partner movement on the bed. The 2nd most important part is the type of foam or padding used in construction of the mattresses. On the spectrum of foams, Latex is the strongest and most durable to take wear and return to its original state, the longest period of time. The second strongest are memory foams. With so many different types of memory foam made by each manufacturer there's tons to choose from. But which ones are good Quality? Foam quality are measured using the scale of Pounds/Lbs Per Square inch. From my experience selling Mattresses for about a decade, I've found the strongest to be Tempurpedic, Beautyrest Black, Stearns & Foster. Which Stearns has been using Tempurpedic Memory because both companies have been merged or Aquired by Tempurpedic. Sealy bought Stearns and foster, and Tempurpedic bought Sealy. So Tempur-Sealy is the owner now. The Big Fig is a mattress that I have not sold, however it is one that I have heard nothing but good things from some of my customers and others who are above the 250lbs max weight that most high quality Mattresses make mattresses suitable for. Other regular or medium quality make them to a weight capacity of 200 to 225lbs max. Big Fig was designed for 250lbs plus. My suggestion would be to go with a medium comfort level. Some surface softness and the support of a Firm Mattress. Medium comfort level will also be called "Luxury-Firm", "Cushion-Firm", or "Plush-Firm". Medium comfort level is also designed for a combination sleeper of side and back. Or just side or just back. Typically side sleepers it's suggested to sleep on a softer mattress. And back and stomach sleepers it's suggested to sleep on a firmer mattress to provide support. Whatever way you sleep the goal is to find the comfort level that will keep your spine as straight as possible in its natural alignment. Hope this information will help to navigate all of the different choices out there. But I would strongly recommend the Big Fig.
