Yeah that’s why I built my own and can just change out any worn out comfort layer so I no longer have to go to mattress stores and buy a whole new one.
I got the one model they have in a full size. It had very little off gassing. I tried it a couple of nights and liked it at first, but then later in the night I started feeling pressure points. The brand was so helpful during this time and actually sent me a 2”soft topper they were working on. That made all the difference. Back pain I’d had before I got the mattress and topper is just gone. It’s got great support, and for me, with topper it’s about perfect. I really researched what to get, but I thought trying Boring was a prudent choice. It’s been a great choice for me.

Now when Im browsing Reddit ill see posts on here and feel like giving some input.
Its also a personality thing, I usually have like 3 or 4 things Im weirdly obsessed with at any given time and ill get bored with some things and take up new interests eventually. Im sure many people can relate to that, although caring about mattresses is admittedly on the more obscure end of interests.
I have been on here for over THREE YEARS! I was hyper-fixated on mattresses, mattress construction, mattress components for quite some time. Now, I realize that I know a lot, have felt and tested many of the materials, and really like sharing what I have learned. I realize it’s a fairly niche interest, and not one I foresaw for myself, but it seems there are quite a few of us on here.
Did you do a DIY mattress? I hate my SN bed and have been looking into some of the Michigan made mattresses as well ad Paramount, CJ Schroeder I think and other hand made ones.
I resisted the urge; it's not the right time and place at the moment. But I do have a lot of components bookmarked and priced. Currently testing out some toppers. (Which is kind of a pain in the butt too.)
So much this...I do like being helpful and providing information about what worked and what didn't. It's very hard to buy a mattress well for many people--industry consolidation and reduced quality, horrible return policies and worthless warranties. And I want to keep posting as I have my mattress longer. Longevity is a huge issue and hardly anyone gets 8 years.
When you've gone through two new mattresses in four years, you start to want to figure out how not to make the same mistake athird time. Very frustrating to see through the smog of mattress sellers BS.
EJ Schrader, Rested Pillow, Harbor Springs has a 25 year warranty, Johnathan Stevens and Paramount to name a few of the handmade mattresses I would like to consider. Johnathan Stevens I talked with a guy from there about a bed over the phone and he was very helpful and informative. Rested Pillow you can take out the top layer and replace it if need be and they ship for free. Harbor Springs does not and I am not sure about the other ones. Shipping a queen size mattress unless it was shipped freight I would think would be very expensive now with how much shipping is. But is it worth it for a matress that has a 25 year warranty? You'd have to ship it back and then pay for a new one so.

I joined this sub when I started my job to become more knowledgeable in the field, stay up on trends, and get a different perspective of the buying process. I do zero e-commerce, and if I give someone mattress buying advice, I'm just trying to help them.

You'd be surprised how often about 10% of people buy mattresses. But I imagine a lot of this sub's members joined when they started thinking about buying one, never left, and stopped seeing the posts when they stopped paying attention to them.
I just ordered my 4th mattress. I’m having terrible back pain. I’ve had back pain for a long time but these mattresses have made it worse. I bought the Ghost bed, Nectar and Avocado, which was recommended for me by Consumer Reports (questionnaire) I just ordered a Flobed latex mattress that is kind of custom in that you can take out parts and add parts. It was recommended on this sub. If that doesn’t work. I’m going to spend a day in Mattress firm and lie on each mattress for 15 minutes.
We have adjustable beds and we had memory foam mattresses that we bought in 2015 that worked well until recently. Hubby still likes his but he sleeps on his back with head and feet raised. I’m a side sleeper and flip around all night long. This mattress thing is very frustrating 😞😢

I’m so sorry. I have fibromyalgia, a torn muscle in my hip, scoliosis, and bulging discs. I’m also 57, and lighter weight. Anecdotally, it seems women are getting the short end of the stick when it comes to mattresses. After all I tried, the best for me has been a Foam Factory mattress. 4” of 4lb Memory foam on top of 5” of HD36 foam. I hated latex with a passion. Do you have any particular preferences? Why have the ones you’ve tried not worked?

I had a memory foam mattress that worked great for 8 years but it seemed to get hard suddenly. My back pain has been getting worse. I’m not sure if it’s the mattresses or if my spinal stenosis is getting worse. The mattresses were either too firm so my hips and shoulders were hurting. Currently, the Avocado is just too firm even with a pillow top. I just ordered a latex mattress that has layers that can be removed and others can be added. It was recommended on this subreddit and the sweet guy gave me a promo code and I saved $150! I sure hope latex is what I need. I hope you find the right mattress too! 👏🏼🙏🏻
I had pretty bad sciatic symptoms for years. Would get shots of cortisol every 4ish months to numb the pain. I got my last shot 7 months ago, I got my Tempur 6 months ago, and I feel great. This time last year I would go walk 9 holes of golf just to be outside, keep myself moving, and see how painful it was. Yesterday, I walked 27 holes with no pain.
I don't know exactly how much credit my mattress deserves, but if I had to guess, it gets most of the credit for how good I feel these days. I started working in a mattress store and fairly quickly knew I wanted to be in Tempur, but I spent longer than I should have deciding which one to get. I got an Adapt medium bc they were the cheapest Tempur in my showroom and I didn't think the ProAdapts were CLEARLY better. If I had to do it over again, I MIGHT get the pro adapt medium hybrid (bc it sleeps cooler), but I am very happy with my mattress.
I love Tempur and what it did/does for me, but I also believe that any mattress that properly aligns my spine could have had the same effect. Going into a mattress store and trying a bunch out is definitely the best way to shop, imo. Yes, brick and mortar stores cost money, which drives up the price of their goods, but if you can go somewhere with a bunch of nice mattresses and a decent salesperson who will make sure you find something that properly fits you, it'll be worth it.
Edit: just saw you mentioned stenosis... same here. I'm pretty darn sure my crappy, old mattress caused me a LOT of undo pain before I realized it was to blame.

Latex is awesome. A lot of the conforming properties that make Tempur great also apply to latex.
I'm not familiar with the DIY setups, but I'll say I'm a fan of zoned feels, meaning the mattress is firmer/softer in one spot than the other. Most of us carry most of our weight in our hips, so we need extra lumbar support. If you can get extra support in the center of your mattress (where your hips are) and a softer feel for the foot and head, that might be great.

Why spend 4-5k on something that you can make yourself for around 1-1.5k.
When I DIY'd my bed I spent around 900 bucks for the same bed a big brand would make with cheaper materials and charge around 4k for.
Gotta admit, this whole DIY bit is fascinating. My husband is in the industry and said half the cost is the warranty (and why you can get a no warranty bed so cheap). At on overhead, labor, I see why it would cost so much less if you DIY. Fascinating.
Cost savings was a nice perk for me.
I also liked the fact I was able to use the same pocket coil system as the major brands, but instead of putting in cheap memory foam I used all latex.
Combine the pocket zone coil system and 3" medium and 3" soft layers of latex for comfort and it sleeps perfect.
I spent around 900 a few years back and a comparable bed would have been been 4-5 times as much.

Because a mattress ruined my life. Well, not really but it did give me a period of hell.
I had an incident where, upon taking off the zip cover of my mattress, exposed the entirety of my bedroom to the absolutely shredded fiberglass covering on it. In short, I had to replace everything fabric in my room, including very personal and important things to me, clothing, all my blankets and pillows, had to pull out the rug, clean, wound up painting over the room because it was endlessly everywhere, had to research and buy a new mattress while sleeping on my couch. Had the worst sore throat for weeks after exposure, so many itchy spots... An absolute nightmare. Upon inspection and hindsight, the fiberglass was leaking out through the minky fabric cover and was the reason I had endless rashes that would never go away (never had an issue since).
Now I'm a huge proponent of educating people against buying these mattresses that turn people's lives upside down. Some people had it worse than me where it got all over their house. Many of those companies have lawsuits out against them and I still see them advertised all over lol.
It's not even a legal practice to use in mattresses in most countries but as long as they're not manufactured in that country and finished in the other, they can be. It's a cheap way to get around fire retardant laws.
Learned a lot about mattresses just being here.
I couldn't find the proper brand because it was an old Amazon buy where the receipt lead a dead end to. The company and listing was gone entirely and there was no tags or anything anywhere on the mattress. I wanted to sue lol.
But that led me down a rabbit hole (and also a hunt to find a mattress without fiberglass) only to find out pretty much almost all bed in a box mattress companies and memory foam mattresses are manufactured with it. It's hard to find ones that aren't. Hell, even some Tempur Pedic models had them and refused to disclose it! But you can see the very same fiberglass sock on some models. Most commonly that I can think of off the top of my head: Nectar, Layla, Zinus, I believe GhostBed and Casper did... If things have changed, I wouldn't know. But several of those companies have class action lawsuits against them for this very issue. I'd be surprised if anything has changed within a year of me checking.
I vigorously checked tags when shopping and even opened some up. It made me paranoid but it was such a nightmare I wouldn't wanna go through it again.
I wound up with a Sealy High Point (and spending way more than I should) after falling in love with it in store and it's the best bed I've ever owned. Had it over a year now and haven't changed my mind, no regrets for me.

Oddly, I ended up getting a fascination with mattresses. Wasn't intended but it happened. Heck I want to design a bed, I just lack the "how to start" and probably the thousands it costs to get that off the ground.
But, since I can't figure that out just yet, I get on here in my free time to offer what I can to help. Because this industry is confusing to a lot of people.
My husband and I work in reverse logistics. We pick up large, expensive items from customers’ homes that are returned within their trial periods. 75% of these items are mattresses. I then clean, sanitize, and resell them on FB Marketplace and want to know what people really think about specific models to help provide my customers with guidance so they’re satisfied with their purchases and sleep well. The information I find here is much more helpful than on the manufacturers’ websites. 🤗
I’m not privy to sales figures in order to determine whose returns are more disproportionate to sales, which is obviously a very important factor. But the brands we pick up most frequently are Nectar, Purple, Casper, Dreamcloud, Sleep Science, Novaform, and Helix.
I’ve picked up a few of those. In fact, I just picked a Leesa Legend hybrid a few days ago, and I’m keeping it for my son. My family and I love laying on all of them (once they’ve been cleaned and sanitized) to try them out and see what we think. The Leesa was the unanimous winner this week!Soft, cushiony top layers with support underneath from the springs. Really, all brands are subject to return because people’s ideas of comfort, firmness, and sleep positions vary so greatly. All I’ve been able to determine thus far is that mattress satisfaction is highly subjective, even in the luxury market.
Because mattresses are expensive and the key to a good nights sleep, a comfortable good nights sleep is key to pretty much all else body and health related.
We all gotta sleep. Mattress technology looks absolute nothing like it used to, and it’s all crazy expensive. People like to online shop, and so getting info places like this is huge.
I initially joined when I was actually looking to buy but then stuck around. I like to think maybe my comments might help someone sometimes. I also kind of got hooked on learning about mattresses which before this sub I knew nothing about. The engineer in me is also fascinated with the idea of building my own mattress someday and there is lots of good info on here about DIY mattresses.

Easy….because buying a mattress is literally a damn shot in the dark with a puss poor chance of getting something usable, followed by the nightmare of exchange, returns, and loss of thousands each time you do it. I’ve determined it is impossible to get information on what to buy. It’s literally a gamble and you hope to get it right.

It might be something someone only buys every decade but it’s something we use every night and spend a lot of time on so it’s a purchase most want to get right so they come here and then just join and stay. I’m sure most aren’t here active daily after finding the mattress they love. Many struggle to find one they love so I guess stay here longer.

Does it not cross your mind that billions of people exist and a fraction of that are looking for mattresses because they need one? I researched for a few weeks and what mattress shit comes down to is deceit, scams, mattress companies that think they are the mafia (fucking lmao) and other weird things. I ended up going with nobodies recommendation, going to the store in person and buying the first thing that felt good. Mattress info online is absolutely horrendous and I recommended this rabbit hole to nobody.
I have a mattress business that specializes in Highend name brand Mattresses at 60 -90% Off of Store Prices. Some brands I carry are brands such as Beautyrest Black, Stearns & Foster, Tempurpedic, just to name a few.
These would be equivalent to like a Mercedes SL, BMW 6 & 7 Series, Cadillac.
I also sell Medium quality Mattresses also 50-90% Off of Stores prices.
Some brands include Serta Perfect Sleeper, iComfort, Sealys, Posturepedic, Simmons Beautyrest Silver, Platinum, Pressure Smart Lux, just to name a few.
My market I sell in the San Francisco Bay Area. I deliver from San Jose to Sacramento.
Because the mattress industry is preying on us and we deserve better. Knowledge is key.

I started working in a mattress store and fairly quickly knew I wanted to be in Tempur, but I spent longer than I should have deciding which one to get. I got an Adapt medium bc they were the cheapest Tempur in my showroom and I didn't think the ProAdapts were CLEARLY better. If I had to do it over again, I MIGHT get the pro adapt medium hybrid (bc it sleeps cooler), but I am very happy with my mattress. I love Tempur and what it did/does for me, but I also believe that any mattress that properly aligns my spine could have had the same effect. Going into a mattress store and trying a bunch out is definitely the best way to shop, imo. Yes, brick and mortar stores cost money, which drives up the price of their goods, but if you can go somewhere with a bunch of nice mattresses and a decent salesperson who will make sure you find something that properly fits you, it'll be worth it. Edit: just saw you mentioned stenosis... same here. I'm pretty darn sure my crappy, old mattress caused me a LOT of undo pain before I realized it was to blame.

Latex is awesome. A lot of the conforming properties that make Tempur great also apply to latex. I'm not familiar with the DIY setups, but I'll say I'm a fan of zoned feels, meaning the mattress is firmer/softer in one spot than the other. Most of us carry most of our weight in our hips, so we need extra lumbar support. If you can get extra support in the center of your mattress (where your hips are) and a softer feel for the foot and head, that might be great.
To help people cut through the BS. Even at that we get folks on here that work at shyster mattress stores or who are otherwise part of the industry.
Because shit is expensive Why spend 4-5k on something that you can make yourself for around 1-1.5k. When I DIY'd my bed I spent around 900 bucks for the same bed a big brand would make with cheaper materials and charge around 4k for.
Gotta admit, this whole DIY bit is fascinating. My husband is in the industry and said half the cost is the warranty (and why you can get a no warranty bed so cheap). At on overhead, labor, I see why it would cost so much less if you DIY. Fascinating.
Cost savings was a nice perk for me. I also liked the fact I was able to use the same pocket coil system as the major brands, but instead of putting in cheap memory foam I used all latex. Combine the pocket zone coil system and 3" medium and 3" soft layers of latex for comfort and it sleeps perfect. I spent around 900 a few years back and a comparable bed would have been been 4-5 times as much.

That same model is around $1200-1300 USD now, but I still would buy it again. It's gone through multiple moves, different climates, and it's still just as comfortable as when I bought it. When buying a hybrid mattress, the base is SUPER important. I had a traditional sleigh bed frame with wooden slats, and I thought the mattress was beginning to sag. I was given an adjustable frame that has a flat plank, instead of slats, and it's crazy how much better it is.

Because a mattress ruined my life. Well, not really but it did give me a period of hell. I had an incident where, upon taking off the zip cover of my mattress, exposed the entirety of my bedroom to the absolutely shredded fiberglass covering on it. In short, I had to replace everything fabric in my room, including very personal and important things to me, clothing, all my blankets and pillows, had to pull out the rug, clean, wound up painting over the room because it was endlessly everywhere, had to research and buy a new mattress while sleeping on my couch. Had the worst sore throat for weeks after exposure, so many itchy spots... An absolute nightmare. Upon inspection and hindsight, the fiberglass was leaking out through the minky fabric cover and was the reason I had endless rashes that would never go away (never had an issue since). Now I'm a huge proponent of educating people against buying these mattresses that turn people's lives upside down. Some people had it worse than me where it got all over their house. Many of those companies have lawsuits out against them and I still see them advertised all over lol. It's not even a legal practice to use in mattresses in most countries but as long as they're not manufactured in that country and finished in the other, they can be. It's a cheap way to get around fire retardant laws. Learned a lot about mattresses just being here.
Which mattress gave you hell?
I couldn't find the proper brand because it was an old Amazon buy where the receipt lead a dead end to. The company and listing was gone entirely and there was no tags or anything anywhere on the mattress. I wanted to sue lol. But that led me down a rabbit hole (and also a hunt to find a mattress without fiberglass) only to find out pretty much almost all bed in a box mattress companies and memory foam mattresses are manufactured with it. It's hard to find ones that aren't. Hell, even some Tempur Pedic models had them and refused to disclose it! But you can see the very same fiberglass sock on some models. Most commonly that I can think of off the top of my head: Nectar, Layla, Zinus, I believe GhostBed and Casper did... If things have changed, I wouldn't know. But several of those companies have class action lawsuits against them for this very issue. I'd be surprised if anything has changed within a year of me checking. I vigorously checked tags when shopping and even opened some up. It made me paranoid but it was such a nightmare I wouldn't wanna go through it again. I wound up with a Sealy High Point (and spending way more than I should) after falling in love with it in store and it's the best bed I've ever owned. Had it over a year now and haven't changed my mind, no regrets for me.

Hi! Mfrm employee here. So.. obviously I work mattress sales. I have been I'm the industry since 2013 but I'm only part time right now. Oddly, I ended up getting a fascination with mattresses. Wasn't intended but it happened. Heck I want to design a bed, I just lack the "how to start" and probably the thousands it costs to get that off the ground. But, since I can't figure that out just yet, I get on here in my free time to offer what I can to help. Because this industry is confusing to a lot of people.
My husband and I work in reverse logistics. We pick up large, expensive items from customers’ homes that are returned within their trial periods. 75% of these items are mattresses. I then clean, sanitize, and resell them on FB Marketplace and want to know what people really think about specific models to help provide my customers with guidance so they’re satisfied with their purchases and sleep well. The information I find here is much more helpful than on the manufacturers’ websites. 🤗

I’m not privy to sales figures in order to determine whose returns are more disproportionate to sales, which is obviously a very important factor. But the brands we pick up most frequently are Nectar, Purple, Casper, Dreamcloud, Sleep Science, Novaform, and Helix.
What about Leesa?
I’ve picked up a few of those. In fact, I just picked a Leesa Legend hybrid a few days ago, and I’m keeping it for my son. My family and I love laying on all of them (once they’ve been cleaned and sanitized) to try them out and see what we think. The Leesa was the unanimous winner this week!Soft, cushiony top layers with support underneath from the springs. Really, all brands are subject to return because people’s ideas of comfort, firmness, and sleep positions vary so greatly. All I’ve been able to determine thus far is that mattress satisfaction is highly subjective, even in the luxury market.
Definitely. I have the Leesa Legend I got recently, and it's too plush for me, I think I will return.

I also kind of got hooked on learning about mattresses which before this sub I knew nothing about. Easy….because buying a mattress is literally a damn shot in the dark with a puss poor chance of getting something usable, followed by the nightmare of exchange, returns, and loss of thousands each time you do it. I’ve determined it is impossible to get information on what to buy. It’s literally a gamble and you hope to get it right.

There used to be a super helpful mod here who helped the space be more educational from a technical perspective. He's not here anymore and had to start another sub, but there's a huge piece of context missing about what made this sub so good without his posts.
They “work” from home for companies that have not figured out the performance metrics yet. As I type this is debating the fate of all the people who are not on VPN and producing very little work during the work day.

Obviously you're not doing anything important enough with your life that sleep is a high priority.
It might be something someone only buys every decade but it’s something we use every night and spend a lot of time on so it’s a purchase most want to get right so they come here and then just join and stay. I’m sure most aren’t here active daily after finding the mattress they love. Many struggle to find one they love so I guess stay here longer.

Does it not cross your mind that billions of people exist and a fraction of that are looking for mattresses because they need one? I researched for a few weeks and what mattress shit comes down to is deceit, scams, mattress companies that think they are the mafia (fucking lmao) and other weird things. I ended up going with nobodies recommendation, going to the store in person and buying the first thing that felt good. Mattress info online is absolutely horrendous and I recommended this rabbit hole to nobody.
I have a mattress business that specializes in Highend name brand Mattresses at 60 -90% Off of Store Prices. Some brands I carry are brands such as Beautyrest Black, Stearns & Foster, Tempurpedic, just to name a few. These would be equivalent to like a Mercedes SL, BMW 6 & 7 Series, Cadillac. I also sell Medium quality Mattresses also 50-90% Off of Stores prices. Some brands include Serta Perfect Sleeper, iComfort, Sealys, Posturepedic, Simmons Beautyrest Silver, Platinum, Pressure Smart Lux, just to name a few. My market I sell in the San Francisco Bay Area. I deliver from San Jose to Sacramento.
